I have found that I am most successful fasting when I plan ahead. I don’t want to focus so much on the food, although that’s important in this fast. I want to spend most of my time and energy focusing on my relationship with our Lord.
So, I try to plan about three days of menus at a time and make sure I have everything I need to prepare the simple meals. I plan to post more than 100 recipes up on this weblog over the next few weeks, so come back often. You can receive a very helpful Daniel Fast Meal Planning Worksheet by subscribing to our list at http://daniel-fast.com
Here are just a few simple menus. They are all ideas for menus that you can use during your Fast:
Breakfast
Sliced fruit
Hot whole-grain cereal with raisins and nuts
Juice on the cereal
Lunch
Hearty Layered Salad and Greek Vegetable Stew
Dinner
Vegetarian Chili and a Green Salad with dressing
Lentil Soup and a Green Salad with dressing
Snacks
Sliced vegetables with hummus
Sliced vegetables with white bean dip
Raw almonds or other nuts
Sliced fruit and nuts
Please add your ideas to the comment space below. I would love to add yours to this section!

Is almond milk OK to use with oats? It does not contain any dairy products. Would it be considered a beverage?
Thanks

You can use unsweetened additive free almond milk (or other plant-based milks) during your fast with recipes and on cereal…..Remember the only drinking beverage on the fast is water . . . Be Blessed on your Fast!

can we have foods that have calcium chloride and citric acid listed in the ingredients?
Daniel Fast Team said,
March 20, 2012 at 12:25 pm
Calcium Chloride is on the edge as far as I’m concerned. It’s an allowed compound for certified organic foods, so I tell people it’s “allowed but not preferred” and they should try to find options that don’t include it whenever possible. Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C (when natural it’s fine) used for a natural preservative. It’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. Be Blessed!

can I have dried fruits-all natural is stated on box. i.e. Raisins- Ingredients only lists seedless raisins but the Nutrition Facts lists 25g of surgar. I am not sure if this is natural surgars created from the grapes turning into raisins???
Daniel Fast Team said,
March 15, 2012 at 7:42 am
Hi Zan,
Yes, dried fruits are fine on the fast. IF you are reading the sugar grams in the “Nutritional” list only, then that is naturally derived sugars and is fine. If you are reading sugar in the INGREDIENTS list, then sugar Has been added in and this is a product to avoid. I hope this helps!

can you eat a falafel on the Daniel Fast ?
Daniel Fast Team said,
March 1, 2012 at 4:07 pm
Hi Leslie,
This is a classic case of the ingredients in Falafel are fine for the fast, but the cooking method (deep fry) disqualifies it. You may want to experiment and come up with a new way of preparing it. I hope this helps!

Hi Rose,
I am not sure the type of fast that you are on, or if you are wanting to incorporate some Daniel fast foods into your fast. But, here is a general list of foods allowed for the Daniel Fast to help you: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: the only drinking beverage allowed is water, spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices. For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you.
You can get plenty of protein in nuts and peanut butter, Whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables, many people add some unsweetened soy protein powder into a ‘smoothie’ as a liquid meal (make sure the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast and watch out for milk products (whey) and sweeteners along with chemical). I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

I wanted to know can you use Stevia Leaves on the Daniel Fast? The are naturally sweet leaves from Aftrica and have no calories. Diabetics can also use it. And I wanted to know can you use glass rice noodles. They are wonderful with vegetables. Please let me know. Thanks so much in advance for getting back to us. Have a blessed day and stay prayerful.
Susan Gregory said,
January 12, 2011 at 7:28 pm
Hi Benita,
No sweeteners are allowed on the Daniel Fast, including natural and calorie free varieties.
Glass rice noodles are pure starch and are made of processed rice where they germ and the bran has been removed from the grain with only the endosperm remaining – the starchy part of the kernal.
So the glass noodles are not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

Hi. At my church we are starting a 21 day Daniel fast and I have a few questions. I’m a little confused with what I’ve read about the beverages. Are we allowed to have fruit juice as long as it’s 100% juice or only water? Also can we have foods that have calcium chloride and citric acid listed in the ingredients? And I have been taking a diet pill called phentermine for the past month. Can I still take that pill? I also was getting the b-12 shot once a month along with those pills. Is that okay too? Also can you take medication for headaches, heartburn, etc.? Felt like maybe that would be cheating because we would be trying to make it too comfortable for ourselves and that the discomfort is part of the sacrifice. Not sure if that’s the way it is suppose to be done.

Hi Kelly,
Just like other foods, even Amy’s products require that you read the ingredients. This brand is very good and natural, but it is not vegan and many of the meals include milk products such as milk and cheese. Also, sweeteners are often used. So just read the ingredients. http://www.amys.com/

I will be starting the Fast on 3/1. I am a huge fan of chips and salsa. I already found a salsa that I can eat. I know that corn chips are a no, however, I found an all natural, organic brand with the following ingredients: corn flour, non hydrogenated safflower and/or sunflower oil and salt. Do those ingredients still make it a no?

Hello,
Praise God we have made it to 2010. I am starting a 21-day fast with my church. We first read Matthew 4-6 to begin our fast. How awesome God is and I am thankful that he has entered my life. I did a fast last year for 30 days with the church and found that I became a person who could leave meat out of my diet. I have been meat free for over a year. I say to those that do not believe they can go it with faith/prayer and with God on your side how could you fail…have a blessed year.

Hi I need your help. I can’t have nuts and most of the foods in the daniel fast. So I can only have chicken as a meat in my diet everyday for the last five years. I can’t even have beans or salad. So what do I substitute the other things with to help me keep my bodies protein so that I don’t get sick.
Susan Gregory said,
January 3, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Hi Linda,
First, I encourage you to start declaring complete healing over your body and start commanding that your body work in divine health as it was intended to do!
Regarding the fast. There is no power in the foods, but rather entering into a period of fasting with a pure heart. So if you need to modify the fast to meet your current health needs, then that would be acceptable.
I hope this helps!

Hi Peggy,
I am so glad you added this post! Yes, edamame (pronounced [eh-dah-MAH-meh] and are fresh green soybeans) are a flavorful and healthy snack. One of the ways I especially like is seasoned edamame. Here’s the simple way to prepare them:
Spiced Edamames
3 1/2 cups of edamames in the shell. You can use either fresh or frozen pods.
3-4 tablespoons virgin olive oil (use the kind for sauteing)
Thai, Spike or other seasoning (Make sure you read the ingredient list to assure it is sugar-free and chemical-free.)
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1-2 tablespoons soy sauce(Make sure you read the ingredient list to assure it is sugar-free and chemical-free.)
Heat olive oil in frying pan over medium heat.
Add edamame pods and saute until heated and then add seasoning and garlic (add a bit at time so the flavor is to your liking)
Stir beans and seasoning until the pods are well-coated.
Add the soy sauce and stir until thickened (1-3 minutes).
Serve as “finger food.” The pods are flavorful . . . eat the bean inside and discard the pod. Yumm!
Thanks again for bringing this great food to our attention!

Hi Cindy,
There is really very little offered by fast food restaurants that would be consistent with the Daniel Fast. If they serve garden salads with oil and vinegar dressing . . . that might work, but so much of the food in fast food restaurants included chemicals and additives that it would be hard.
You might consider packing food in a small cooler in your car, including salads, rice cakes, peanut butter, nuts, fruit and the like. There are so many healthy foods that are easy to take along when you travel.
I hope this helps!

I use lots of different herbs and spices. One of my standards is Italian seasoning. I also like curry, thyme, and then cinnamon for sweeter foods.
Do you have the Daniel Fast Cookbook? The recipes are so full of flavor and so much of that is due to the seasonings used.
Bless you on your fast.
