Peanut Butter and the Daniel Fast

Peanut butter is a great source of protein while on the Daniel Fast. You’ll want to read the label when you purchase peanut butter for the fast to make sure it’s free of sugar and chemicals. Look for 100% Peanut Butter. There are several brands.

My favorite is Adams Natural Peanut Butter. Granted, you need to keep their products stirred, but that’s one of the prices of not having hydrogenated shortening in your peanut butter. I would far prefer to stir!

I’ve used this peanut butter for more than 35 years! I love the flavor and it contains peanuts. No more, no less. Just peanuts, which makes it a perfect Daniel Food ingredient for some sauces and for using with celery or other vegetables.

  1. Hi Nancy,

No, teas are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. Most Daniel Fast purists drink only water with an occasional fruit and/or vegetable juice.

Blessings to you as you seek God through prayer and fasting!

What an absolute blessing to find your website! This is my very first Daniel Fast and I have been apprehensive about the thought of “starving” because of only being able to eat a few select fruits and vegetables…and that isn’t the case at all! Your blog and helpful hints — in addition to your menu ideas — make me feel like I can really do this! My whole heart is to hear God’s voice better and to grow deeper in my relationship with Him. I’m expecting great things from this fast because I know God has called me to do it. Thanks to you — and to everyone who writes in — this has given me the “jump start” I needed to begin. Blessings and keep up the great work!

I made my own salad dressing from vinegar and olive oil. I added a few grapes, strawberries and a little water. I mixed it with a hand blender and put in on my spinach and sliced strawberry salad. You can add a little stevia if you wish.

  5. Hi Mary,

No, whey is an animal product. Actually, the Daniel Fast can be very rich in protein using beans and rice, tofu and whole grains. Do you have the cookbook? It has many recipes that can carry you through the entire fasting period.

Blessings to you on your fast!

  7. Hi Tammy,

I don’t use Egg Beaters so I am not familiar with the ingredients. To find if they are allowed on the Daniel Fast, READ THE LABEL and if they are sugar-free, chemical-free and animal product-free they should be okay.

I suggest that you try firm tofu as a substitute for breakfast scrambles where you would otherwise use eggs. The tofu is an excellent source of protein and it acts like a sponge for flavors. I use it sauteed onions and green peppers along with Italian herbs and love it!

Blessings to you on your fast!

My church and I started a corporate Daniel fast today and will continue for 21 days. I tried last year and gave up after a week or two. This year is so different. I had beans, bananas and fruit earlier (the entire day) and lots of water. It is about 9pm, and I do not feel hungry. I truly want to please the Lord, and hear His voice clearer than ever. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions you gave. The Daniel Fast really teaches us a way of life, and I hope to continue (good eating habits) when the fast is over. The Lord is breaking the addiction to salt, sweets and fried foods. Thank You, Lord for helping me through this! God’s Blessings to all who want to please our Heavenly Father.

Hi, I am about to start the Daniel fast. My wife MAY be pregnant, should she avoid the fast due to the possibility of pregnancy? Thank you for your encouragement.

  11. Hi Nedra,

Vinegar is okay if you want to make your own dressings (which is what I like to do). I have found dressings in the Natural Foods sections of my local grocery store, but they are few and far between as most prepared dressings include sweeteners or chemicals.

    I hope this helps.

    February 6, 2008
  12. Nedra #

Are there any salad dressings that are chemical and preservative free for the Daniel Fast that we can use? Is vinegar ok if we decide to make our own?

    February 6, 2008
  13. Hi Tina,

It’s best to start drinking extra water even now. Stay well-hydrated. Also, eat foods high in potassium (bananas, whole grains, cantaloupe) and increase your vitamin C by taking 600 mgs in the morning and another 600 mgs in the evening.

If headaches persist, it is a sign of detox. If they get unbearable, typical medications are acceptable. Fasts should never harm the body, but bring it only good.

Blessings to you on your fast.

  15. Yes Brandy,

Popcorn is fine. I suggest using canola oil . . . the olive oil can have a funny flavor on popcorn.

    Blessings!

Susan, what type of popcorn can we have? I didn’t know we could have that. I’ve been having a hard time trying to find snacks to eat on this fast. I was eating sunflower seeds as a snack and my fruits of course, but I stopped eating the sunflower seeds because i seen on the package that they had 1gram of sugar. is that natural sugar or is that processed sugar? this is my first time doing this fast and i’m on day 12 so far, but i’m having a hard time with finding snacks to eat. i’m gonna try the p-nut butter and celery, but i need one other snack and i like popcorn. didn’t know we could have that. please explain.

  18. Hi Brandy,

Ascorbic acid is vitamin C and used as a preservative. I only buy canned foods that list it as “natural ascorbic acid.” Otherwise, I only buy foods that are free of all artificial chemicals. Most of them are canned in their natural juices or perhaps some salt is added. But no artificial chemicals and no sugar. I sometimes buy canned fruit, but find there are only a few canned in their natural juices. These are usually the “lite” varieties.

    I hope this helps.

I noticed that you said you purchase food in the canned food section. I am finding absorbic acid on many vegetables. What is appropriate in the canned food section to buy for fruits and veggetables? Can I cook popcorn in olive oil? Thanks for your ministry that strenghthens our walk with the Lord.

I was recently looking for salad dressing in the health food store..but notice most of them have xantham gum. It’s being labeled as a natural thickener. I would appreciate your insight.

I also wanted to add that I coming close to the end of my fast and I’m not looking forward it. My body is cleansing naturally in ways that it never has before and I feel great. I get pretty constipated easliy and have purchased all kinds of cleansers in the past to stay regular. It’s amazing the way the food God created does everything for the body it needs to. I don’t eat a lot a lot of dairy…but I want to find a modified way to stay on this permanently. I see why Daniel never went back to eating the King’s food. The physical energy and the mental clarity can not be competed with.

  22. Hi Lauren,

I buy most of my food in the natural food section, canned food section, and produce section of the largest grocery store in my little town. I find everything I need there. Make sure to READ THE LABELS of the foods you consider to make sure they are sugar-free and chemical-free.

Also, I cook most of my own foods from scratch . . . I cook in batches and freeze a lot of food and also make sure to prepare lots of salad ingredients as soon as I buy them so they are easily available when it’s time to prepare meals.

Blessings to you on your fast.

I am going to start my Daniel Fast next week and I’m just not sure where I can get all of these whole grain foods. I’ve seen some people say that absolutley no chemicals are allowed in the Daniel Fast, but where can I really get food with NO CHEMICALS what-so-ever?

  24. Hi Maria,

Congratulations on your very successful fast! I hope you feel happy about every victory of your Daniel Fast experience. Remember, the fast is for the body, soul and spirit. Your body received what it needed, but obviously not too much! I hope others have a similar experience. We live in a nation that it terribly overweight. I think it’s great that many lose weight on the Daniel Fast, learn to eat in a healthier manner, and can start taking better care of themselves beyond the fasting period.

Bless you and thanks for sharing your testimony!

Today is the last day of my 21 day Daniel Fast. I have not gone hungry. I can already see answers to my prayers and although God and I still have to do some work together, I realized that when I sought Him, I found Him.
P.S. I have lost 11 pounds. Can I be happy about this?

  28. Hi Tiffany,

There are no butter substitutes of which I am aware. I would expect that powdered butter is full of chemicals and dairy products. This might be one of those area where you need to feel the sacrifice. Mine is in coffee. Being a Seattle native, the birthplace for Starbuck’s, I miss my morning coffee more than anything else. But every time I long for it, I turn my attention to the Lord and the great things He is doing in my life.

Blessings to you on your fast.

Do you have “The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit?” If not, I encourage you to get the download and read it. I think it has a lot of information that can help you, especially about walking in the Spirit.

Bless you, Leslie. Turn to the Lord and He will help you through!

  36. Hi Sandra,

It might be okay, however I just READ THE LABEL on the can I have and it contains artificial preservatives. If you can find one without preservatives, then it would be fine. My guess is that an organic or natural brand is available in health food stores or in the natural food section of your grocery store.

Blessings to you on your fast.

  38. Hi Ginger,

Your breath will probably improve greatly with the Daniel Fast, especially if you were drinking coffee. During the fast, you could chew mint leaves or parsely. It will not only get into your mouth, but also in your stomach which will have a great effect on your breath!

I hope the best for you on your fast!

I see that gum is not allowed on the fast. I am in sales for a living and rely on sugarless gum to freshen my breath during presentations.

Any suggestions on how to keep sweet breath during the fast. :-)
