Brown Rice and Apple Breakfast

Hi, Susan:

I have been thoroughly enjoying the posts on your Daniel Fast website and am pleased to share with you a discovery I made just this morning for breakfast (this is for an individual serving):

1 cup cooked brown rice
fresh apple (cut up into bite size pieces – to taste)
raisins (to taste)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspooon 100% pure edible coconut oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl (except the oil), heat for 2 minutes. Add oil, stir and Eat! It is delicious!

You could probably add soy milk to this, but I don’t like soy milk so I didn’t and it was just as tasty (and filling! :-)

Thank you for this opportunity to share and for your awesome ministry.

God Bless!

Hi,I am on Daniel Fast,I started last week I’ve been eating fruits and vegatables during the day,so I want to find out if there is a time to eat or I can eat anytime for as long as I am hungry and can I eat any amount? In south Africa we eat crushed maize and eat it {porridge}is it also allowed?

    Thank you and God bless

      Hi Rhaps,
There are no scriptures in the Daniel Fast that specify the number of times to eat or when to eat daily during the fasting period. However, we need to keep in mind that this is a fast and portion control and the eating sensibly is appropriate. So, eating three meals and two snacks would be the typical. Crushed maize is fine, just watch what’s in it and what goes on top. Be Blessed!

I am curious if several ingridients are allowed:
-Whole Wheat Pasta (w/ durum whole wheat flour)
    -Soy Sauce
    -Baked Beans
    -Veg. Oil
    -Canola Oil
And also…what do you recommend as a butter alternative?

    • Hi KC,

During your Daniel Fast you will start to read the list of ingredients in prepared foods so you can find out if they are acceptable. Vegetable and canola oil are fine – however for health reasons you will want to use olive oil most often. Unsweetened soy sauce that is free of chemicals is allowed. All whole grains are allowed, so your whole wheat pasta is likely okay, but again you will want to read the ingredients. I use a pasta and the only ingredient is 100% Duram whole wheat flour. It’s a Kroger brand product.

Read the ingredients in the baked beans you are considering, but my guess is that they have sweeteners.

I hope this helps! Be blessed on your fast!

Hi I have a question… The ground cinnamon that I have says may contain traces of milk, eggs, wheat and soy… So is this not allowed… I see a few recipes have cinnamon in them.

    January 24, 2011
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Tameka,
That just sounds like the ‘Allergy” warning that all companies must place on their packaging when those items are being packaged in their company as well as the cinnamon. This doesn’t mean they are in the ingredients list, so your cinnamon is fine for the fast.

How about matzah? I have some leftover from Passover. There isn’t any leaven or sugar in it.

Renee that brown rice and apple breakfast sounds good. What is the purpose of the coconut oil? I thought my mom had some but she doesn’t but I would like to try this for tomorrow morning?

    January 12, 2010
    • Hi Raquel,

I make this recipe a lot. The small amount of coconut oil used offers a pleasant flavor along with the oil needed for the light sautee. Our bodies also need some fat, but in balance and moderation.

      I hope this helps.

I know some don’t like to use the microwave, however, if you should decide to use it, make sure you don’t put the apples in before microwaving (it zaps the flavor) so save them to stir in after you’ve heated up everything else.

I have wondered about cornmeal as well. We are almost at the end of week 2 of a 3 week fast and a few of my friends have said that the cook with Polenta. I wondered if that is allowed. I love all the Lundberg brown rice products. And in reading labels carefully, I have found some pasta sauces without sugar. It makes doing the fast possible for my entire family (even kids). Also, I found a bread called “Manna Bread”. The ingredients are sprouted wheat, raisins, carrots and water. And it’s delicious.

    January 22, 2009
    • HI Marcy,

Yes, polenta is allowed, as long as the ingredients are consistent with the Daniel Fast Guidelines. You can get a copy of them at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com.

    • Hi Judy,

The Daniel Fast guidelines are based on Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 along with common Jewish fasting and dietary principles. Typical pasta is not allowed on the Daniel Fast because it’s made with processed flour (all the nutritious stuff is taken out). But all whole grains are allowed and now many pastas are available that are made only of whole wheat and water.

      I hope this helps!

I’m new and have just read the comments from others and they are most informative, but it seems that some want to venture from the main guidelines that you have laid out, especially about the drink. I’m sure water as it says in the Word that Daniel only drank, is what we should stick with on the Daniel fast. I’m excited about it and I want only to go by what Daniel ate and drank as you have stressed in the guide lines. I think obedience plays a big part in recieving from the Lord, which is why I am interested in the first place. Just to draw closer to the Lord and for once in my life, give Him my whole self and appetite. I praise the Lord for showing me this website and pray God’s blessings on you…..Thanks so much…….

  19. Hi Tem,

Yes, oatmeal and all whole grains are allowed on the Daniel Fast. I eat Muesli most every morning with a little rice milk. I used to use soy milk, but it’s hard to find without sugar added to it. Also, for some women, soy products can cause health problems. Since I only use it on cereal, rice milk works out great.

I hope the best for you on your fast.

Can you eat oatmeal during the Daniel Fast.

  21. Hi Debbie,

The area of beverages can be confusing for the Daniel Fast. It’s clear that Daniel drank only water when he described his fasting in Daniel Chapter 1. In Chapter 10 it says he drank no wine, which likely meant that he drank only water.

Because of these scriptures, I stick with only water when on the fast with the occasional juice, but even that is rare.

The Daniel Fast is not a “natural food diet.” But rather, it’s a fast that restricts foods for a spiritual purpose. So I encourage you to drink only water on the fast and experience you spirit taking control over your flesh as you seek God through this powerful discipline.

    I hope this helps.

I am interested in a new product I happened upon to replace coffee it is called,
    Teeccino
A list of ingred. follows:rosted carob, barley, chicory root, dates, almonds, figs, natural vanilla extract, and other natural flavors

Another is called Cafix: roasted barley, rye, chicory, beet roots

Would these be allowed. I could see a possibilty of the first being omitted because of other nateral flavors that are not specified, but the latter seems ok. Looking for your opinion.
    thanks

  23. Hi Charlotte,

All sweeteners including sugar, honey, syrups, etc. are off the Daniel Fast because of the descriptions of Daniel’s fasting experiences in Daniel 1 and 10. In Daniel 1 he ate only vegetables and drank only water. In Daniel 10 he ate no pleasant foods or meat and drank no wine for 21 days. It is from these passages that the Daniel Fast for the current day was developed.

One mistake people make is that if a food is “natural” then it should be okay. But that isn’t what the Daniel Fast is about, even though it is all chemical-free and without highly processed foods.

I hope this helps. Thanks for your kind words and I hope the very best for you and your husband on the Daniel Fast.

    February 5, 2008

Can you please take a minute and explain why my husband cannot eat honey…I would like to know if I can continue to drink Noni Juice? I just happened upon this website, and found it most informative. We are just completing the first week of the 21-day fast…this being our first we have really benefited from the recipes. In light of a report from the doctor today, we are going to try to incorporate this healthier eating into a permanent lifestyle. Yet we know that we are not moved by the reports, but by what God says…that my husband is healed. During this fast, we are expecting many breakthroughs…thanks for all you do…may God’s blessing continually be upon you

  25. Hi Mina,

There is a great deal of room for interpretation for the Daniel Fast. It is based on the little bit that Daniel reported about his fasting experiences in Daniel 1and 10. In Daniel 1 he ate only vegetables and drank only water. In Daniel 10 he ate no meat or pleasant breads and drank no wine.

From these few scriptures and the study of Jewish dietary laws, the Daniel Fast food lists have developed. The reason 100% whole wheat bread is NOT on the fast is because it is yeast bread. Yeast was a symbol for sin in the Jewish customs of fasting.

Many scriptures talk about leavening. Here is just one from Exodus 12:19, “For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land.”

Additionally, most whole wheat breads include dairy products and honey, both of which are not included in the Daniel Fast.

So, that is why most people who try to follow the fast eliminate all kinds of bread from the Daniel Fast.

I am not sure about your question concerning soy milk and how that relates to leavened bread? So I can’t really respond to that.

But, like I say, there is a great deal of room for interpretation. The fast should not be legalistic. If you feel okay about eating bread during the fast and don’t experience a “check” when you study the Scriptures and seek the Lord’s guidance, then there is nothing wrong with eating the bread.

I hope the very best for you on your fast.

    January 13, 2008
  26. mina #

At our church we allow bread…As long as it is 100% whole wheat bread. Wheat does come from the ground so I’m not sure why you guys think you can’t eat it…especially when you’re allowing soy milk…

    January 13, 2008
  27. Hi Faye,

There is a lot of room for interpretation on the Daniel Fast. It’s based on only a few verses in Daniel 1 and 10. In Daniel 1 he “ate only vegetables and drank only water.” In 10 he wrote, “I ate not meat or delicate food [KJV translate that as pleasant bread] and drank no wine.”

So, while Ezekiel Bread is a very healthy bread, it is still a yeast bread, plus it contains honey which would have been a delicate food in Daniel’s day. That’s why it is not included on this Daniel Fast List.

After answering 100′s of questions from men and women wanting to conduct a quality fast, I have tried to create guidelines that are easy to understand, clear and still hold the integrity of the Daniel Fast. But like I say, there is a lot of room for interpretation.

    Blessing on your fast.

    January 11, 2008
    • I understand that Daniel ate no pleasant food or delicate food…
See, this is why I questioned this site. How can anyone create a listing of food that is acceptable for Daniel fast? The food back then was pleasant for them. However, for us, the chemicals and the farms, we really do not know what we are eating. However, here we are now trying to creating food that is acceptable and “pleasant” for us to consume. I think it should be vegetables, fruits, and water only.

Me (very guilty) tried to eat and make (own interpretation) of food that is acceptable because I was hungry…. Yes, I ate the tofu and I love it. It is pleasant food for me. However, for my sister, it is not. She will faint (not Galatians 6:9)…

Again, I believe that we are creating food that is not only healthy (yes our body is a temple of God), but we are experimenting and trying to find a food that is acceptable for Daniel fast and making it “pleasant” to eat! I truly do not agree with that.

He only drank water. Is it possible that only water was around? I am quite sure orange juice, apple juice (pure), or cranberry juice (pure) did not exist. Therefore, I am not sure how can we say ONLY water. Now, I am at home eating fruits which I barely do (Thank God for this site & Daniel fast), but I am also blending (juicer) it so I could drink it. So, what is the problem with tea? If I do not put sugar in my tea, trust me, it is not pleasant. I need honey, milk, or sugar. Without that, it is not pleasant and should be acceptable (I did not drink tea while on this fast).

I am sorry for ranting. I truly love this site because there is hope to make it through Daniel’s 21 day fasting. God bless you all for sharing. I pray that God will give me the understanding and wisdom I need for fasting and praying. I also pray and how we are not leaning to our own interpretation.

God bless you all…. Be a Blessing Today and walk with the King, our Lord Jesus Christ!

      • Hi Jackie,

We are not trying to eat as Daniel ate . . . instead, the Daniel Fast is modeled after the fasting experiences of the prophet. If you want to eat only as Daniel did, then I encourage you to research the foods that would have been available to him and then eat only those foods. However, I think you will quickly find that this is impracticle – and that’s why the fast is modeled after the prophet’s experiences rather than copy them exactly.

Water is the only beverage on the Daniel Fast because of what the prophet recorded in Daniel 1 and not because of what was available or not. He ate only pulse (foods grown from seed) and drank only water. In Daniel 10 he reports that he ate no precious foods. That is hard to come up with hard rules. However, sweeteners, sugary desserts and deep fried foods would be included as “precious foods.”

Again, just as you described, what is precious for one person is not precious for another. So when standards need to be developed, then those considered to be precious is difficult. That’s why sweeteners and deep fried foods are in this category rather than specific foods.

        I hope this helps.

    Hi,
We are venturing on the Daniel Fast for the first time with our church, and from other sites that I have read, Ezekiel Bread is allowed if it is flourless, and there are several that are flourless in Kroger or Health food stores. Another Daniel Fast site has recipes for making your own Ezekiel bread.

  29. Hi Landra,

I am able to find mine in the grocery store. Remember to READ THE LABEL to make sure they are sugar-free and yeast-free. I think Quaker has some 100% rice that they offer. I like Lundberg. They are 100% whole grain brown rice and sea salt. The company is in California and I am not sure how wide a distribution they have. I am in Washington State and I know not everything is available nation-wide.

Blessing to you on your fast!

Wow, I’m so glad you told me that Ezekiel Bread is not allowed, I was about to go buy some today. Do you find the brown rice cakes in grocery stores or health food stores?

I agree that the microwave should not be used for cooking anything it cooks all the nutrient out of food. Also some poeple have to be careful with using soy.

  32. Hi Landra and Deb,

I agree that Ezekiel Bread is delicious and healthy, it’s just NOT ALLOWED on the Daniel Fast. It contains both yeast and honey (both no-no’s), plus it’s a bread, all of which are not allowed. Sorry :-(

What you might try are rice cakes. Make sure to READ THE LABEL as they often times have sugar or syrup, but try the brown rice cakes with peanut butter and raisins. Yummy!

Watch out for peanut butter. It has a very high calorie count. It is not uncommon for people to actually gain weight on the Daniel Fast because they fill up on foods like peanut butter and nuts.

Hoping the best for you on the Daniel Fast.

I found Ezekiel Bread at Kroger that contains only lentils, seeds, and salt. All of the ingredients were organic too. It is pretty tasty.

      January 10, 2010
      • Hi Sarah,

If the Ezekiel Bread you found is a “raised bread” it is not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

Ezekiel makes tortillas and two boxed cereals that are great on the Daniel Fast. But the last time I checked, their bread has leavening, which is not allowed.

Great option BEFORE & AFTER the fast :-)
