Daniel Fast Breakfast – Muesli
Originally developed in the late 1800′s by Swiss nutritionists, museli is a delightful cereal made of whole grains, dried fruits, nuts and seeds. It’s easy to make (1/2 cup museli with 1/2 cup water, bring to a boil and then simmer for 2-5 minutes).
I use Bob’s Red Mill Old Country Style Museli which is an Oregon company, so I am not sure if it available all over the country (I live in Washington State). But there are other companies that make museli if you can’t find Bob’s.
Museli is also great as a cold cereal with soy milk or applesaucse. I like mine cooked and plain, somtimes with a little soy milk.

i love to munch banana chips for snacks. they are very nutritious too.”
Perfect for the Daniel Fast.
Be blessed!
Can I have cold cereal like special K or bran cereal?
Hi Vivian,
You will need to read lot’s of Ingredients labels on prepared foods such as boxed cereals. Special K Cereals have sugars and additives such as BHT: this is a chemical used to keep oils from becoming rancid. Not good for the Daniel Fast and just not good in general but some reports indicate that it’s harmful to skin. Some breakfast cereal options would be Muesli, for boxed cereals are the Ezekiel brands and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: http://www.arrowheadmills.com/product/shredded-wheat-cereal There are several others found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores, and good Old Fashioned Oatmeal. Be Blessed on your Fast!
I was looking at the ingredients for the peanut butter and they all contain sugar. How is peanut butter okay for the Daniel’s fasting if it contains a sweetener that we are suppose to avoid?
Hi Destiny,
All peanut butter is not fine for the fast, you must find one that has no sugar added into the ingredients. Such as Adams 100% Natural Peanut Butter, the only Ingredients is: Peanuts. I hope this helps!
are banana chips ok for the daniel fast?
Hi Brent,
It’s all about the Ingredients, and how they are cooked. So are they sweetener and additive free? And are they baked, not deep fried? (Deep fried foods are not allowed on the fast). I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
The Soy milk I’ve seen has cane juice in it…of course I’ve only checked out one kind. Does this disqualify it cuz its a sweetener?
Hi Michael,
Yes, keep looking until you find one that is unsweetened and has no additives. Be Blessed!
I have purchased Quick Oats that are 100% whole grain rolled oats as the only ingredient. No additivies. Are these kind of Quick Oats acceptable..i’m confused because it says to pass on Quick Oats, but mu Quick Oats say 100% Whole Grain rolled oats….
Your 100% whole grain oats are fine. The quick oats that don’t comply are those that have sweeteners and other ingredients added.
I’m partial to Bob’s 7-grain hot cereal, which contains wheat, rye, triticale, oats, oat bran, barley, rice, and flaxseed, and even more pleased I didn’t have to give it up for this fast. For $3.35 the little bag yields 17 servings. What a deal! You can’t get that from a box! I switched to *un*sweet soy milk for the fast (that I use instead of water or my usual soymilk), and flavor it with cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, walnuts, and fruit. Needs no sugar that way.
Is jungle oats allowed on the Daniel fast ?
Since there are alot of varieties and Brands of oatmeal available, this is what I look for: Number one, the packaging should say “Old Fashioned-Oats” if it says ‘Instant’ or ‘Quick Cooking’ pass on them. Number two, read the ingredients label, Whole Grain Oats should be the Only ingredient. If there is anything else listed make sure it is allowed on the Daniel Fast or pass on it and just keep looking.
Be Blessed in your journey!
Regarding Bob’s Red Mill: I happened across a headline about his company a few months back. Apparently he was due to retire and gave the company to his employees. Very commendable.
The link below is just one of the reports. You’d find several more on a google search.

Yeah, Bob!
Hi Carl,
Yes, all whole grains are allowed on the Daniel Fast.
Be blessed!
Is whole grain cereal fine on the fast?
Hi Lydia,
Honey and other sweeteners are not allowed on the fast because they are considered “delicate” foods, which Daniel did not eat during his fast as recorded in Daniel 10.
I try to keep in mind that the fast is a time to “restrict food for a spiritual purpose.” So going without any sweeteners has us confronting that desire from our souls . . . and then we take control of it through this spiritual discipline.
I hope this helps and I hope the very best for you on your fast!
whenever I did the Daniel Fast, i always restricted myself. On reading your site i was quite surprised that spices are allowed. Raw Honey is natural why is it not accepted?
Lydia
Hi Donna,
Yes, muesli is commonly available in just about all supermarkets and health food stores. It’s been around for decades and a wonderful breakfast cereal that can be eaten hot or cold.
Rolled oats are also acceptable, including Quaker if they are 100% oats and sugar-free and chemical-free.
Bless you on your fast!
My pastor placed the entire congregation on a 21-day fast and consecration. This is really a challenge and sacrifice since due to medical reasons, I have to take medications in the mornings. The cereal that was mentioned, do you know if it is available in Florida? Also, is Quaker oats acceptable on the fast? Thank you and keep my church lifted in prayer.
Another natural to add to cereal (I like steel cut oats soaked in water overnight & warmed in the microwave the next morning) is dehydrated fruit and nuts. Just be sure to read the ingredients on the dried fruit – bananas and pineapple have added sugar.
Thanks for all your pertinant info. For a “natural sweetner” apple juice or cider is great, especially in oatmeal or Museli or any cooked cereal.
children seem especially fond of this. Blessings on your site keep up the
good work.
