No Animal Products on the Daniel Fast
by Susan Gregory on March 4, 2008
I just read another question asking if chicken broth is allowed on the Daniel Fast.
The answer is easily, “No.” The bottom line is that no animal products are allowed on the Daniel Fast. This is drawn from both accounts of Daniel’s fasting as described in Chapter 1 and in Chapter 10. On these two “partial fasts,” Daniel ate no meat and only fruits and vegetables.
So as long as any product has an origin from an animal of any type, it is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. This goes for all dairy products, cheese, eggs, etc.

hello, i just stared a 7 day fast today but i had some chicken broth. Do i need to start all over tomorrow on just water and all natural juices? Thank u and God bless you!
Hi Phoeno,
No, you don’t need to start over. However, there is a powerful lesson in this experience. When we unknowingly make mistakes, we seek the truth from the Lord and then conform to His ways. So you want to do the same here.
When we knowingly make a mistake, we repent (change) and then conform to the ways of the Lord.
This is a our life as citizens of the kingdom of God. We are renewing our minds, changing our behaviours and becoming more like our Model – Jesus Christ the Lord!
Be blessed on your fast!
Are we allowed seafood? Such as fish, crabs or shrimp? I know its no meat but what about other products like seafood? Is it allowed?
Hi Olethia,
The Daniel Fast is completely plant-based. In Daniel 1:12 we see this:
Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
Pulse means food grown from seed. So only foods that fit within this category are included on the Daniel Fast. The only beverage is water.
We also use Daniel 10:3 which reads: I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks.
Because of this, we eat no sweeteners of any kind, no deep fried foods and no fancy desserts. We also don’t use any stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol.
Finally, we look to the typical Jewish fasting principles. This primarily impacts leavening – so no yeast breads or foods with leavening are allowed.
I hope this helps. Spend more time on this blog and at our Daniel Fast site http://www.Daniel-Fast.com and you will find all the resources you need for a successful Daniel Fast.
Be blessed.
