How to End a Daniel Fast

Many men and women will complete their 21-day Daniel Fast over the weekend. And so I wanted to post some advice about ending your fast. Even if you are not concluding your fast, please keep this information in mind. It is important.

  • Ease back into your “typical diet.” This is especially true with caffeine, sugar, fatty foods, meat and dairy products. Small portions are wise and go slow, perhaps just one or two foods per day.
  • For caffeine beverages, drink one small cup or glass and then see how your body reacts. Don’t be surprised if you get the “jitters.” Consider starting with de-caf (I realize that’s almost criminal for those of us who love the java). :-)
  • Don’t be surprised if you feel tired after you start eating the “typical foods.” Your body has been detoxed over the 21-day Daniel Fast and it might scoff at what it has to digest!
  • Continue to drink lots of filtered water, at least 1/2 gallon a day.

Also, consider the lessons you’ve learned and the good habits you’ve adopted on the Daniel Fast. Don’t leave them behind, but let them become a regular part of your life. This includes your prayer and study time with the Lord as well as improved eating habits.

Finally, while you may always fast at the New Year, consider fasting at other times of the year. Many parents pray and then fast from dawn to dusk on their children’s birthdays. If you have pressing issues or circumstances facing you, consider a time of consecrated prayer and fasting. Last year I fasted during Pentecost seeking the Lord’s direction for some personal business matters.

The Daniel Fast is an excellent method for a partial fast. It beats John the Baptist’s fast — honey and locust!

    My daughter and I just finished the fast this past Saturday. WOW! It was hard at first. I was so mean the first 2-3 days! Ask my hubby ;-) She wanted to do it so I did it with her. I mainly wanted to do it to de-tox my body. I feel better and will still eat more veggies and fresh fruit. I lost 13 pounds (total of 23 in the past 6 months) during the fast. I can tell my body is feeling better. I’m trying to take better care of myself so I can serve God. During the fast I’ve realized that if I’m not healthy, I can’t spread the word, serve others, or be a blessing to others. Thanks for all of the info on this site as I went to it often the past month. Hope everyone has a blessed day and don’t give up on the fast…Believe me, If I can do it, anyone can do it!!

    Fresh Strawberries, Bananna, and Pineapple with Ice in a blender is not allowed?? Why is this.. I know water is the only thing that can be consumed as a liquid but drinking a smoothie is no different then having vegetable soup or unsweetened almond milk with fiber cereal or crushing tomatoes to make tomato paste or cutting and dicing peppers and other vegetable stir fry to eat..?? .. u crush the food up in your mouth before you swallow anyway.. Susan, why cant we have blended fruit and ice??? its the same as cutting up vegatables and stirfrying it.. If anything.. its even healthier and better for your body because you are consuming fruits raw..

      Hi Daniel,
      WHAT?………………….YES, Smoothies Are Allowed on the fast when made as a meal replacement (since they are considered a “liquid meal” rather than a beverage). A Daniel Fast “smoothie” is simply, blended fruits, vegetables, if needed a splash of unsweetened plant-based milk (Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, etc.) or some Natural, unsweetened juices (and yes, ice if so desired). Also, if additional protein is needed, you can add in a plant based, chemical and sweetener free protein. Are we ok now? Haha….I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

    Two more days of my Daniel Fast and it’s complete! It’s been an amazing time and I feel so much more closer to God and full of His wisdom. He is so faithful!

    The first time I did this fast, I didn’t slowly work back to eating my regular diet and experienced tremendous nail breakage. My nails looked terrible and even had cracks down the middle. I wish I could describe how bad and unhealthy it looked. This time, I hope a have enough self-control to work my way back to a regular eating diet.

    i am on day three of the daniel fast. i had a burning headache days 1 and 2 but yesterday my legs started aching and are worse today but not to the point of taking pain meds (can they be taken). is this common? i am, for the most part, a very healthy eater, no fried foods or sugar, white rice or potatoes; lots of vegies whole grains, high fiber, and lean meats. i started taking a potassium supplement yesterday, hoping this would help. tonic water (quinine) was recommended to my mother-in-law by her cancer doctor for leg cramps but tonic water is sweetened and not allowed on the daniel fast. any ideas?

    • Hi Janice,

      Your symptoms sound like caffeine withdrawal. The leg cramping will end soon. Also, fasting should never harm the body and you don’t need to be miserable. So if you need to take some pain killer for these symptoms, by all means, do so. Also, next time you fast, taper off caffeine, sugar and processed foods before the fast begins and you will likely not have this same experience.

    I DID THE DANIEL FAST IN MARCH, SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN “IRREGULAR”. BEFORE THE FAST I WOULD “GO” LIKE CLOCK WORK. BUT SINCE THEN IT CAN BE AS LONG AS 3-4 DAYS ,WHICH IS NOT HEALTHY. HAS ANY ONE ELSE HAD THIS ISSUE AFTER ENDING THE FAST. IF SO I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY TIPS.

      Actually, most people find a great improvement in the body elimination process during the fast. That’s because of the increased fiber in the meals. If you are having problems with elimination now, then you can increase fiber such as whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.

      If this persists or causes you concern, then it would be good to contact your health provider.

      Yes, you can have unsweetened plant-based protein drinks. I don’t use these myself, but I have seen an unsweetened soy protein drink in the stores.

    I want to do the Daniel fast I started drinking carrot juice all day is this ok?
    Also I drank coffee this morning just black. Should I start the Daniel Fast over?

    My pastor suggested the Daniel Fast for 21 days, some of us went for 28 days, and I have decided to continue. The only exception I have made was to incorporate fish into the diet. This is now just a healthy way of living. What some feel they miss while fasting, the rewards are far greater. My spiritual growth has increased and the physical body now leaves me with the ability to Praise without pain. My husband joined me and requested that we never return to our old way of eating.

    GOD is GOOD, all of the time! I just finished my 40 day fast (First one), and feel better spiritually & Physically than I ever have in life. Obedience is key, praying along with staying in the word IS essential. I’ve grown closer to God in so many ways (Journaling Daily helped me). My eating patterns have definitely changed, I will no longer consume certain things.

    God let me know, if I let go and let him, MY LIFE would go into the direction HE has ordained.

    I oredered your book and used your recipes the entire 40 days, THANK YOU, it was unbelievable helpful.

    THIS MY FIRST DANIEL FAST. I’VE READ THE FOOD LIST. BUT ONE THING I’M NOT CLEAR ON. SINCE PICKLES ARE REALLY CUCUMBERS, ARE THEY ALLOWED ON THIS FAST?
    I’VE HAD ABOUT THREE SMALL ONES OVER THE PAST WEEK AS A SNACK. WAS THAT WRONG?

      This is one of the “READ THE LABEL” responses. If the ingredients on the label comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines, then the pickles would be allowed. So that would mainly mean that dill pickles that don’t have any chemicals . . .

    Thank you for all your follow-up emails and recipes. Tomorrow will be Day 21 for me. At the begining of the fast I felt myself concentrating on what I should eat and menus so I decided to stick with a fruit in the morning and steamed veggies at night.
    I feel totally cleansed and the time I spent with God turned it from a diet to an anointed spiritual journey for me.
    Thank you for your input. I lost a total of 10 pounds….but considering my regular weight is 120 pounds, it wasn’t that obvious to me or those around me.

    Your emails were very encouraging.
    I just have a question. Do you start regular meals in the evening of Day 21 or start eating regular food the day after Day 21.
    I just wanted to clarify that.

      God is so good! Your experience is a witness to the promise He gives in His Word that when we draw near to Him, He can draw near to us! What a wonderful blessing!

      You will want to slowly re-introduce foods into your diet when you complete the fast. I also encourage people to consider keeping the many good eating habits they have experienced during the fast.

      So when you eat meat, be sure to chew it well, prefer low-fat cuts and small portions. Also, only a small amount of caffeine. Be careful of fatty foods . . . and keep in mind that your body is now likely functioning at it’s optimum level. So be good to it! :-)

    I followed the Daniel Fast for the month of January. I have done this fast in the past – but things were a lot more transformational for me this time. I became more aware of how I felt, and how much stronger I became naturally and spiritually.

    I plan to follow the food guidlines 3-4 days a weeek. I am thanking God for the clarity that I have received during this time.

    I am also thankful that you have put this information together in an easy to follow format. I have shared this site with several people.

    Today was the last day of my fast. I have so enjoyed these last 21 days. I was so blessed to have had a chance to read your blog before starting and I purchased your book and that made a huge difference for me. I was able to be prepared with a kitchen full of appropriate foods and spiritually ready to embark on this. I have felt so good physically and have had so much energy, too. I am looking forward to my coffee tomorrow but I plan to keep up with the much improved eating since beginning the fast. Thank you Susan for all your help in this!

    I’m on Day 5 and for 2 days now both my legs have been aching constantly. Glad to find out from above it’s only detoxing. Must have a lot of bad stuff running through my system (especially after Christmas).

    My prayer for this time is for breakthrough regarding 2 area’s of my life.

    Firstly I am looking at what goes into my mouth and our families overall health. At the end of these 21 days the whole family will be changing to a healthier God food plan rather than the Kings foods.

    Secondly I am looking at finding God’s purpose for my life in particular his plans for me in 2010.

      Be sure to drink lots of filtered water. Also, banana, cantaloupe and whole grains seem to lessen the cramps. I get them sometimes, too. They are generally linked to caffeine detox.

    • You can’t eat pure sugar if you want to be on the Daniel Fast.

      Remember, the natural sugar in foods (like in the corn itself) is fine. But adding sugar as a separate ingredient is not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

    • Hi Rachel,

      There isn’t anything wrong with meat. It’s just not part of the Daniel Fast as the prophet at only pulse (foods grown from seed) and drank only water. So if you want to follow this method of fasting then you won’t eat meat for 21 days. However, if you MUST have meat . . . then you can do that – but you are no longer on the Daniel Fast.

      If that is your choice, it’s a great opportunity to examine your heart to understand why you made the choice . . . and then learn from that experience. So much of what we experience in fasting we also experience in life. So it’s a great opportunityu to learn about ourselves and the condition of our hearts. Only then can we tranform ourselves into the image of God with the help of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

      This is just part of why fasting is such a powerful spiritual discipline.

    I feel God leading me to do the Daniel Fast. I have minor health issues that caused my interest, but the more I read, the more God is showing me that I physically and spiritually need the detox. I am obviously addicted to sugar and caffiene! I am also on a very small budget, so please pray that if this is what God wants me to do, then He will provide financially for me to buy the necessary foods. This will be my very first fast…I am both apprehensive and excited to be brought closer to my Lord. Thank you for this website!

      Yes, it is okay to add lemon to your water. Some people like to use slices of cucumber, also. The main thing is to keep your water water and not cross the “tipping point” into tea.

    When is the correct time to break your fast at the end of 21 days? I’ve heard some say after sunset on the night of the 21st day and others u only supposed to start with breakfast again the new morning. Pleaseadvise which is biblically correct.

    Thanks alot, this website helped me as a young man fast and get closer to God in ways I can’t even believe. I have gained so much, its unbelieveable. Today is my last day; I started on June 1st, 2009 (My Mothers Birthday) and concluded June 21st, 2009 (My 19th Birthday). I feel great, God is blessing me, and Im even going to continue seeking the Lord through fasting at every chance I get. God Bless you all, and I encourage anyone who is still fasting to be strong, because “the latter shall be greater than the former.” For those who is about to begin, I would like to tell you that I actually recieved my greatest blessing (so far) on May 31; the day before I started fasting; because I had a made-up mind, and a determined heart.     Hello Everybody, God has told me to do a Daniel Fast and that it should be for 21days. The way He has brought me to this is through my son’s illness (stage4 colon cancer mets to both lungs and now back in colon) and God telling me and our family to fast & pray on the 7th, 17th and 27th of each month for Richard’s healing and for our “believing family unit” to have unity in the Faith and belief that God can heal Richard. We are also reading Ephesians and Psalm 27 as our family devotions on our days of fasting. I have not seen any comments on this blog where anyone has fasted for healing of another person. I would like for someone to comment about fasting and healing, how these go together. I know that God can heal my son from this wicked cancer and would appreciate your prayers for him too. Thank you for your faith in God and for your prayers for my son to be healed. If you feel lead to fast with us on the 7th, 17th and 27th that would be a great blessing to Richard and our family~ Love to all/Linda

    I am on day 6 on my fast but have been using honey and I had two slips on the same day . I am determined to make it to day 21 .So I am putting away the honey and will be careful of the bread I eat and when eating out. Please keep me in prayer as I press towards the mark. Thinking about starting from scratch all over again……

      You have done well to make the necessary corrections so you are aligned with the Daniel Fast. It’s through knowledge that you can do so. The same is with our lives. As we learn more about living a life faithful to God, we can make corrections so that we can fulfill the call. The Word ways that “people perish because of lack of knowledge.” That’s a powerful invitation to study the Word of God, to spend time with our Father, and to make a quality decision to submit our lives to Him.

    Hello busy sister! I am on 5th day of fast and feel good!

    I wanted to tell you that the Holy Spirit has been waking me up early in the morning to study the bible, about 4:00 AM as it is so quite and I guess he knows I need this time. This has been going on since my second on my fast.

    my hubby watches racing and poker and fishing all day Loudly .
    So I really love the lord and he is teaching me to study the bible prayer is different with me, as I am not used to doing it so I AM working on it I am not a prayer warrior they are really cool persons but I have other gifts from the lord. Love you your sis in the Lord!!! Karen

    I was a bona fide COFFEE ADDICT!!! Since I have started on the Daniel Fast (this is day 9), I must say I haven’t had but one day of headache and mood swings. What does concern me is this aching I am having in my legs. Could this be because of the caffeine, sugar, and flour? I worked out only one day last week because of it. Otherwise, it is a great way to “hear” God when I am not distracted by processed food.

      Thanks for your post about caffeine withdrawals. Yes, leg cramps are a symptom of detoxing and it could be the caffeine. The best thing to do is drink plenty of water and increase your Vitamin C, cantaloupe and green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.).

  30. Hi, I recently felt lead to try this fast. I am only on day 4 and I’m so thankful to have found these posts by others. My 1st day was clouded with an enormous headache, which I knew would be coming. However, I was thrown off when on the evening of day 2– I was overcome with a debilatating backache. I was to the point of panic because the pain grew so intense through the night…keeping me from my much needed sleep. I prayed relentlessly and the Lord finally gave me some relief so I could rest a bit. I was shocked at how painful the back pain was all of day 3 and now into day 4. I was wondering if something more serious was wrong. I wish I would’ve found these posts just a bit sooner, as I felt the need to schedule an appt with my chiropractor. She did some x-rays and she was my enthusiastic cheerleader for me to continue with the Daniel fast. She said that it’s an emptying port from where toxins are finding their way out of the body. My lower lumbar was inflamed and that is what is causing so much pain. But it did feel good to have a professional tell me these things…and to cheer me on! God gives us the right people at the right time, that’s for sure! Anyway, I wanted to share this with all the others who may be experiencing the bad back pain. She told me to drink plenty of water and keep my hips aligned and do some yoga stretches. God bless and in His Name!

It sounds like you have an excellent chiropractor! Please give her my best when you see her next! I love hearing about health professionals that don’t just give pain pills or freak out at fasting when their patients come in with detox symptoms.

      I also want to compliment you on seeking medical advice when you were alarmed. While I have never heard of anyone having concurrent symptoms of another illness while on the fast, it is important to seek medical attention if one is concerned of symptoms that may be something other than detox issues.

    Today, I have reached my 21 days. Thanks be to God for His strength and awesome power during the fast. I too, have learned interesting things about my body and spirit during the fast. I recently had a mild heart attack and after prayer found only 10% blockage in one artery all others clean and clear. During the fast, I experience energy at times and then weird tiredness at others. At the end of the day I would get a strange dry mouth. But it was worth it, I feel God is working behind the scenes on my behalf to shower me and my family with his grace, love and blessings.

    I know Ezekiel Bread is a no-no while on the fast because of the yeast, but how about the sprouted grain pasta mixed with some Olive Oil?

      Yes, whole grain pastas are a great choice during the Daniel Fast. You’ll need to read the label to make sure the manufacturer hasn’t added sweeteners or chemicals. Health food is becoming a big business and many big food companies are getting on board but still adding unhealthy ingredients.

      One of my favorite ways to eat pasta is with sauteed onions, green peppers, tomatoes and olive oil! Yumm!

    I would like to fast for 21 days leading up to Easter. I have a problem with recurring vaginal bacterial infections and have been on a regimen of yogurt several times a day, a probiotic pill once a day and plain yogurt vaginal wash once per week. This is working for me and I don’t want to doubt what the Lord can do but I believe the Lord led me to this solution for my problem after researching and going to different blogs reading advice from women with the same issue. Having said all that, should I continue my yogurt regimen and just adhere to the Daniel fast in all other regards? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

      Yes, just as you mentioned it would be perfectly acceptable to continue on your treatment and then use the Daniel Fast in all other aspects. You will still be fasting in a complete way and should experience the same benefits. I do encourage you to choose yogurt that is free of sweeteners and chemicals.

    I ended my Daniel Fast this morning by eating two scrambled eggs and a piece of toast. My stomach is in total rebellion! The living grain cereal I’ve been eating looks pretty good all of the sudden. I have packed my lunch of veggies and brown rice with some poached salmon. the salmon is sounding too good. Oh, boy. I think I need to reevaluate my eating. I had planned on keeping sugar and caffeine out of my diet along with processed food. Now I’m wondering about other foods. I am wonderfully made, but not for a 21st century, American diet!
    By the way, after reading Ezekial, I’m very grateful God led me to the Daniel Fast and didn’t ask me to follow Ezekial! (although my pioneering ancestors did cook using buffalo chips since trees were almost non-existent on the great plains!)

    Thanks for this blog. I was beginning to worry about lower back pain, too. I am on day 15 as I didn’t get started on Ash Wednesday. While I have done other fasts, this is my first time doing the Daniel Fast. My body and spirit needed. Thanks for the tips.

      The back pains could be a result of detox, although since you are well into the fast, it may be something else. You might give your health provider a call to check it out if it persists and concerns you. Of course, take it before the Great Physician!

    • Good morning Shaan,

      You can make your own salad dressings such as those with olive oil, lemon juice and herbs. If you want purchase dressings, you will need to read the labels as most include sugar and chemicals in their ingredients. However, you can find acceptable dressings in the Natural Foods sections of your supermarket or at health food stores.

      My favorite prepared dressing is Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar.

    I’m new to the Daniel Fast and don’t want to stop there. Due to health reasons, I’d like to continue eating healthy (not incorporating sugar, diary or fried foods into my diet). How do I continue? I’m open to becoming a vegan.

    • Hi Linda,

      I hear from many people who feel so much better while on the Daniel Fast that they continue eating in this manner with a few modifications. Most add some chicken and fish 2-3 times each week, add whole grain breads and usually add juice, coffee and tea as a beverage.

      The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat if it remains balanced. There is plenty of protein and a bounty of other needed nutrients.

    Today is day 21 for me! I feel wonderful, have a closer walk with God, I shed my addictions to coffee and sugar as well as 13 pounds. I have decided to change the way my family and I eat in general (get away from the “king’s food” so to speak) and learn to enjoy the food that grows from the ground. I plan to do it again soon and grow deeper in my walk with the Lord.
    Praise God and good luck to all who are just getting started!

    My 21fast ended Monday the9th..I am so blessed. I feel great…energized. Thank you Susan for all the encouragement and information on the Daniel Fast. Coming off the fast is a little tricky…Tried some cottage cheese yesterday…and my mouth rebelled!!!!!!! lol…..The spiritual blessings and feel that God has brought me to a deeper place in HIM…To God be the Glory,,great things HE has done.

    Hi Patricia!! i just wanted to let you know that i will be praying for you and your husband ,have faith that our faithful father will get you through this very difficult time of this fast. I’m on day 21 of the fast and i too had a very difficult time with giving up the joe. Experienced headaches and bodyaches but praise God! with alot of prayer my good lord got me through it,I’ve never felt better! The lord made me realize what a strong hold food in general had on me and my sin of gluttony was exposed. also i recommend u download Susan Gregory’s 21 day cookbook and 21 day devotional it really helps! ‘may the god of peace make you holy in every way’ ‘God will make this happen for he who calls you is faithful’ 1 Thessa 5;23 God bless!!

    Hello ! My husband and I started the Daniel fast yesterday the 2cd. of Feb. This is my first fast ever ….. but I want a claoser walk with the Lord and to do more of his works …I have caffine all day every need and really need the prayer of God’s children that truley beleive… I would really appreciate your prayers , as I will also pray for you …..     I am glad I found this information; I knew I would experience the headaches, but the back pains came as a surprise. I am on day 11, and it has been pretty good….not too much of a struggle. I have never gone this long without meat! I thank God!

    During Daniel Fast..I have back problems and headaches..its wasn’t easy for me. I have to keep get some sleep & drink water…even after Daniel…still doing ok. It really helps for me and keep drinking lots of water….

    Have others experienced back pain and headaches? I wonder what the back pain is from. Both my wife and I had pain on the same days and in our lower back. I figure the headaches are from lack of caffeine. God Bless

    • Hi Albert,

      The headaches and back pain are likely due to detoxification from caffeine, chemicals, and/or sugar. Be sure to drink lots of filtered water (you can use a water filter rather than purchasing bottled water). Your kidneys may be processing all the chemicals leaving your body, so be sure to stay well hydrated.

      The low back pain is probably from the lymphatic system. There are lymph glands concentrated at the base of the neck and the lumbar spine as well as other places in the body. This system can get sluggish and toxic and require “drainage” or detox which occurs during the Daniel fast. It can feel achy and swollen when it is detoxing.

      As you detox a bit your kidneys and liver will be filtering more…it can feel like back pain. This happens with intestinal detoxes too. Always call your doctor though if concerned!

  49. Hello Everyone!

    Today was my closing of Daniel Fast (10 am) but wake up late. So looking at the other website how to close the Daniel Fast and keep healty. Its my 2nd year of this fast. I learn a lot and it was tougher then last year…indule back plains, headcres, and this week (last week of fast) was tempting. (Beucase feel like want to eat other food or days are slower..become unpatince but STILL holding on). Thank you with guidlines after close the fast and eat carefully. I start Jan 3rd-today (Jan 3-23rd is 21 but today is close day) and my b-day yesterday (turn 24)! Agian, thank you!
