Help me understand where eating fruit is mentioned or okay to do. Daniel only ate vegetables and water so I”m confused.

Susan Gregory said,

Hi Pastor Elaine,
The Daniel Fast is based on Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 along with typical Jewish fasting principles. In Daniel 1, the prophet denied the meat and wine from the King’s diet because it had been offered to Babylonian gods. So he denied these foods to consecrate his body unto the Lord. He therefore ate only vegetables (which would have included fruits as they were not offered to the gods) and drank only water.
I hope this clarifies the distinction.

Hi Emily,
Yes, if you need medication, take it on the Daniel Fast. However, make sure you drink ample water which can help with detox symptoms on the Daniel Fast.

Susan Gregory said,

Hi Charlene,
Yes, you can join in the Daniel Fast, but you will want to alter it by adding extra protein. I suggest that you check with your health provider. But the Daniel Fast eating plan is a very healthy way to eat. Since you are supporting the fast growth of a baby, you will want to alter it to provide the extra protein. But going without sugar, caffeine, chemicals and empty carbohydrates will be good for both of you

Hi Sharriea,
My guess is that Wantons are made from processed flour and therefore they would not be allowed on the Daniel Fast. Vegetables at a Chinese restaurant may be okay if they are prepared without MSG.

I was told that when you go on a fast that you do not have to fast on Sundays how true is this? It was said because Sunday is a day for rejoicing , there for its party day . Also is it ok for your kids to go on the Danial fast with you ages 12,8,7,6,4 My husband was wanting the two older boys to join us age 12, 8 .. Also on the danil fast are you still not sapose to have sex with your spouce?
Susan Gregory said,
February 10, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Hi Michele,
During Lent, Sundays are not included in the fast for the very reason you stated in your post. But that is not always followed for every fast. During the typical Daniel Fast, most people do it for 21 consecutive days following the example of the prophet, which you can read about in Daniel 10.
Regarding children: Usually children 12 and under are excused from the full fast. However, if you and you husband want to teach your children about the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting (fasting is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose) then having them participate one a certain level is totally appropriate. Perhaps they can fast from all sugar, which would include candy, desserts and sodas. This would be a good way for them to feel the impact of fasting.
I hope this helps!

Susan Gregory said,

Hi Bridget,
Yes, the Daniel Fast is like a vegan diet, except with more restrictions. Water is the only beverage and no sweeteners or leavening products are allowed during the fast. So you should be able to eat most of the items offered at a vegan restaurant.
I hope this helps.

I haven’t been eating any meat according to the fast, but a friend asked if I was able to supplement soy or veggie burgers etc. Also, I reviewed we can have Organic milk? But, then again the site says only water. How would I eat the whole wheat cereal?
Can you please provide me with the answer to these lovely questions of mine!

Hi Keri,
Yes, you can eat veggie burgers, however it’s hard to find prepared veggie burgers without sweeteners included as an ingredient. Many of those on the Daniel Fast make their own veggie burgers. You can find recipes in the Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version II. Visit http://www.Daniel-Fast.com
Be blessed on your fast!

Could I have organic vegetable soup? In the ingredients it lists ALL organic veggies, filtered water. My concern is about “organic corn starch” – would that not be considered the Daniel fast?
THANKS!
Susan Gregory said,
March 18, 2009 at 10:37 am
Hi DeAnna,
Most organic prepared foods are acceptable on the Daniel Fast if there are no sweeteners added. Keep your eye out for “cane juice,” which is sugar before it’s turned into granulated sugar. Corn starch would be acceptable and is likely used as a thickening agent.
Be blessed on your Daniel Fast.

Susan Gregory said,

Good morning Christine,
No, taking care of our body is a good thing and especially in these days when sickness and disease are so prolific! What you would be doing is the Daniel Diet, since the definition of a “fast” is to “restrict foods for a spiritual purpose.”
Many people change their eating habits after the Daniel Fast as they see the wisdom in this way of eating. Most add some foods, but continue to keep sugar and chemicals from their diets and reduce the amount of meat they consume.
Be blessed!

I am diabetic so I need to watch carbs. I know that fruit and vegetables have carbs (but at least they are the good kind!). I definitely need protein which I could find in lentils and other beans. May I participate in this fast?
Susan Gregory said,
March 18, 2009 at 10:59 am
Hi Nancy,
Most health providers strongly enourage their patients with diabetes when asked about the Daniel Fast to adopt this way of eating. You might need to make slight adjustments and add chicken and fish to have enough protein. Countless men and women with Type II Diabetes find they can reduce or eliminate medications as they lose weight and balance their diets.
I encourage you to check with your doctor before making major changes in your diet. However, you will likely find s/he will find the eating plan very healthy with only minor modifications.
Be blessed!

Thanks for answering all our questions!

Thanks for your kind words! The site is a blessing to me as I can be in touch with you and others! God is so good.
Leavening is not allowed on the Daniel Fast, so my guess is that you will not be able to make cornbread. Also, no sweeteners are allowed. So while those you noted are natural and great choices for good health, they still won’t work during the fast.
I hope great success for you on your fast.

I was wondering about whole wheat or rye crackers. I didn’t know if crackers had leavening since they don’t rise. I saw them last night when I was shopping but refrained until I knew if they were appropriate for this diet. I bought Smuckers all natural peanutbutter and rice cakes to change things up a bit, but I’ve mainly only had fruits, veggies and water. I have already seen results both in the natural and the Spiritual sense.

The spirtual side of going thru this fast has had some challenges for me because it seems like the enemy wants to make to you stop and give up. I have had 2 emotional incidents during this week which would make someone give up, but I am holding on. We are now coming to a close of week 2 and cant believe we did it ofcourse with JESUS’s help. Hi Susan,
I just found this site and it is so amazing and a blessing to me. I;m just starting my second fast. my question is when you are fasting what is the best scriptures to read or what to read in the bible?
I’m fasting for spiritual direction to where God need or wants me to do, along with the cleansing of my body. Are you suppose to have sex with your husband during this fast?
Susan Gregory said,
May 2, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Hi Victoria,
When you fast, you should always have a purpose in mind. It may be to draw closer to the Lord, experience a financial or health breakthrough, improvement in your marriage or even seeking employment. You will then want to see what the Word of God has to say about the matter. Also, I think a great focus is to look up all the New Testament scriptures about “faith.” And then study them, meditate on the, journal and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you what you need to learn.
Regarding marital relations during the Daniel Fast: that is a matter that must be agreed upon by both the husband and the wife. It is not required to refrain from sex, however many couples find it a powerful exercise as they explore other ways to show and share love during the fast.

Hi there,
Just a quick question, i know this diet is usually associated with weight loss but are there any examples of it increasing weight, because in daniel 1 it says that at the end of the ten days they appeared fatter in flesh.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Susan Gregory said,
May 2, 2009 at 11:09 am
Hi David,
Many people do lose weight while on the Daniel Fast. That’s usually because the Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat and when people stop eating high-sugar and high-fat foods, they lose weight. However, losing weight on the Daniel Fast is not a given. In fact, I have known of some who gain weight. Like all weight gain/loss issues, it has to do with caloric intake. So if you consume more calories than you burn, the result is weight gain.
Individuals who eat nuts, lots of whole grains and legumes and high-sugar fruits can gain weight while fasting.
Also, please keep in mind that a “fast” is “restricting food for a spiritual purpose.” So the Daniel Fast is not all about the food. However, if one wants to use this way of eating for health or weight-loss or weight-gain purposes, then it would be a diet.
I hope this helps.

Yes, tap water is fine. However, most people prefer to filter it with devices such as Brita. I use only tap water, but I also live on a small farm and have my own well. The main point is that drinking bottled water is not necessary. However, many reports about municipal water quality indicate that filters should be used.

Cilantro is fine on the Daniel Fast because if it a plant. Fish however is off the list since the Daniel Fast is a plant based partial fast (see Daniel 1). You can however eat tofu, legumes, whole grains and leafy green vegetables that are rich in protein.

Actually, the Daniel Fast is a plant-based partial fast so neither fish or crustacean are allowed (see Daniel 1 and Daniel 10). Hi Susan,
My church will engage in corporate fasting for 40 days. I want to know is it appropriate for me to participate in a Daniel Fast for 40 days or should I do a series of shorter fasts in the 40 day interval? I really like the Daniel Fast for the secondary health benefits as this will be my second Daniel Fast. I know Daniel 10 embarks on a 21 day and I believe that is the longest fast noted for Daniel.
Susan Gregory said,
May 24, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Hi Tanya,
While Daniel engaged in a 21-day period of fasting, the Daniel Fast is not permanently linked to any specific number of days. I think the Daniel Fast is an excellent choice for an extended fast, and a 40-day fast is a long time. The longest period I’ve fasted using the Daniel Fast was last year for Pentecost – 50 days – for financial breakthrough.
Be hope the very best for you and your body of believers as you seek God through prayer and fasting.

I would like to start this fast tomorrow for spiritual purposes for a missions event at my church of which I have charge. The event is in two weeks but I would continue the fast past the event. I frequently have migraines and the adjustment to immediately going off of caffeine has me a bit anxious as the migraines may come with that particualr withdrawal. Any helpful suggestions?
Thank you.
Susan Gregory said,
June 1, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Hi Dallis,
I am sorry for the delayed reply. I have been focused on a GIANT writing project and just checked the blog.
Preparing for the Daniel Fast will help you and others avoid a lot of the symptoms of detox. But the central element in the remedy is plenty of water! I strongly encourage you to drink at least 1/2 gallon of filtered water (the simple home filter with a pitcher) each day. Also, taper off the caffeine slowly as you prepare for the fast.
Pray about whether to start the fast with no caffeine at all. Fasting should never bring harm to the body, so if you need to taper off caffeine as you start, I suggest you do that. However, it’s really best to do this before you fast so.
I hope this helps!

Hello there,
My prayer group & I r preparing 4 a 3 day fast this coming weekend, my greatest challenge is that I’m still sruggling with my smoking habbit, i smoke quite a bit + – 30 a day, if I smoke during a fast does that mean I’ve broken it or can I continue & just keep trying?
Susan Gregory said,
July 8, 2009 at 8:41 am
Good morning dear one,
Yes, you can do the fast even though your physical body is addicted to nicotine. However, I do encourage you to tackle the addiction with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. I am thankful that I have never been addicted to nicotine, so I am not so presumptuous to say, “Just quit!” However, both you and I know that smoking is not good for your health and addictions mean that something outside of us has control . . . and that’s not a good thing.
You always want your fast to have a purpose. Your prayer group may have already defined a purpose for which you are all contending. However, you might also want to use this period of prayer and fasting to seek God’s help with your addiction. I’m not saying quit cold-turkey. But I am saying that you use this time to seek God’s direction. Ask Him to help you, to guide you to ways that you can beat the addiction, and to bring you to complete health.
I can easily advise you to fast even though you smoke . . . because anything that will draw us closer to God and His ways is a good thing.
I hope this helps!

Also, what about pasta sauce?
Susan Gregory said,

Hi Michelle,
The Daniel Fast is completely plant-based foods, so egg whites are not allowed. However, you can find whole wheat pasta in most supermarkets. Be sure to read the ingredients to make sure other that only Daniel Fast friendly ingredients are included. My grocery store (in the Kroger family) has a generic brand of pasta that is made only of whole wheat.
It’s hard to find pasta sauce that does not have sweeteners or other ingredients not allowed on the Daniel Fast. I usually make my own, which is very simple with green bell pepper, onions, garlic, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and Italian herbs.
I hope this helps!

Hi Gabriela,
Many people do choose to fast during daylight hours and if that’s the fast you choose, then that would be okay. However, that is not the Daniel Fast, which is an extended partial fast where some foods are restricted.
One thing I would encourage you to do is make sure you ask the Holy Spirit to show you why you would choose to fast in the manner your described. If you bump into “because I can’t go without my favorite foods for that long,” or some other “fleshly” reason then you will want to deal with that. However, there are always good reason to choose the type of fast you are considering. Just make sure you are spirit-led in the process.
I hope this helps.

Susan Gregory said,
July 29, 2009 at 8:34 am
Hi Melanie,
Yes, you can run on the Daniel Fast. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat. The only change you may need to make is to be sure you are consuming enough protein if you burn a lot of it each day. Check with you health provider to see how much protein you should be consuming each day. You can get that protein from much of the food on the Daniel Fast. However, if you expend a lot of energy and need more than normal protein, add appropriate amounts of fish or chicken to your diet.
I hope this helps!

Susan Gregory said,
July 29, 2009 at 8:29 am
Good morning Halie,
Your question is important as you never want to do anything, including fasting, that would bring harm to your body. You will most likely benefit from the Daniel Fast as you prepare for your marathon. However, you might want to add appropriate amounts of chicken or fish to be sure that you are eating adequate protein. Most Americans eat about twice as much protein as they need. However, athletes do need more protein, so that would be my advice.
As always, be sure to check with your health provider anytime you make a significant change in your diet or exercise program.

Susan Gregory said,

Good morning Fara,
The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water (see Daniel 1), so you can use the apple juice in recipes or on cereal, but not as a beverage. I assume you were asking about the SOBE drink for beverage purposes and it would not be allowed. Just water. I don’t have a Lifewater available right now, but it’s likely that it contains some king of sweetener, which also removes it from the OK List.
I am not sure why you are surprised that potatoes are included as an allowable food. While they are not the best choice for a starch, they are a vegetable.
You can get a complete list of the Daniel Fast foods by going to http://www.Daniel-Fast.com.
I hope this helps!

Thanks for your comments about the site. It’s my blessing to serve God’s people in this way.
Citric acid is common in fruits (especially citrus fruits). It’s often used as a preservative, but to be strict you would only want to have naturally derived citric acid.
Also, dried fruit is fine as long as no sugar or chemicals are added.
