Can you put a small amount of olive oil on your veggies
Yes, you can put a small amount of olive oil on your veggies, also some seasonings, spices, natural salt and pepper. I hope this helps!
We just started the Daniel Fast and I have a family of 6 to feed. Can we eat corn tortilla’s on this fastz/
Hi Yvonne,
Corn tortillas and other whole grain tortillas are fine on the fast, they are considered Unleavened bread. Just make sure there are no leavening, sugars or additives in the Ingredients. Be Blessed!
I have a box of mixed flake cereal with apple. it describes the contents as follows, a blend of toasted and malted wheat flakes, toasted and malted oats, toasted spelt flakes and rolled barley flakes with apple pieces can I have this for my breakfast with unsweetened soya milk
Hi Dawn,
Remember, it’s All about the Ingredients and what’s listed on the Ingredients list (natural sweeteners). Here some ideas for you: A favorite is Muesli, also for boxed cereals are the Ezekiel brands and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: http://www.arrowheadmills.com/product/shredded-wheat-cereal There are also several other Daniel fast friendly cereals found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores, and then there is always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal. I am not familiar with the ingredients in soya milk, so check out the ingredients to make sure they comply with the guidelines. All unsweetened, additive free plant based milks (rice, soy, almond, coconut, etc.) are allowed on the fast for use in recipes and on cereal, not as a drinking beverage. I hope this helps!
Can we use cinnamin, nutmeg, and a glutten free butter spread called Smart Balance? I have a recipe from a friend who is totally Vegan and she gave me a really good recipe for butternut squash and apples cassarole and it is considered a meal. It also calls for brown sugar, but I am sure I could eliminate the brown sugar, it won’t taste as good, but it should be tolerable if the other spices can be used.
Hi Renee,
Yes, all spices and seasonings (including cinnamon, nutmeg) are allowed, as long as they are natural & free of additives and sweeteners.
I am uncertain about the Ingredients in Smart Balance, you’ll need to look at the ingredients list. I can recommend Earth Balance, it’s used as an alternative to butter. Here are the ingredients: http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/eb_pdfs/products/original-nutrition-info.pdf It would be allowed on the Daniel Fast, I hope this helps!
I am starting the fast on Thursday and am panicking about what to eat. Your recipes are so American – are there any English foods you’d recommend? Weetabix?
Hi Lynne,
If you go to: http://britishfood.about.com/od/introtobritishfood/tp/vegetarian.htm you can puruse through some English Vegetarian Recipes. Just modify the ingredients to comply with the Daniel fast guidelines. Weetabix is made with whole grains, so as long as the rest of the ingredients are Daniel Fast friendly (no sweeteners, no additives etc.) then you’re good! Be Blessed!
I’ve been enjoying berries mixed with roasted pears (no sugar, rubbed with a tiny bit of olive oil and a pinch of salt, then roasted), and crushed almonds. It’s a great combination of fiber and protein and you can’t beat the flavor.
Roasted pears sound great! I may try this!
I am doing the Daniel fast again this year. Now that we are gluten free in our house can we use brown rice noodles? We are a family of 8 so I don’t want to have to make a lot of different meals rather modify the Daniel fast for those not on the fast. My 16 and 14 year olds want to join me this year. We are blessed that our kids eat a lot of the foods on the Daniel fast food list.
Thank you.
Hi Karla,
Yes, brown rice noodles are a good choice. But, check the ingredients list to be sure all is Daniel Fast friendly!
I’ve read several post regarding cocoa powder and baking powder/ soda?? Hmmm
Hi Renee,
Yes, Unsweetened cocoa powder (additive free) is allowed in recipes on the fast. But, leavening agents are not allowed (yeast, baking powder/soda etc.) Be Blessed!
since you cant have milk and i see mentino of soy milk would almond milk be against the fast the unsweetend kind and if your gluten sensitive what would be good for that
Hi Chad,
All “unsweetened” and “additive free” plant based milks (Almond, Rice, Soy, Coconut, Oat, etc.,) are fine on the fast… “but only for use in recipes and/or on cereal”, Not as a drinking beverage (water is the only beverage on the fast). I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
yeah that helps now i just have to find a gluten free cereal i can eat
Hi Chad,
You might find some ideas here: http://celiacdisease.about.com/u/ua/theglutenfreediet/FavoriteCerealUA.01.htm
(I don’t know if any will be Daniel Fast friendly, but it’s worth a try) Be Blessed!
I just out that I am 6 weeks pregnant. Am I allowed to complete this fast? Or can I modify it?
Hi Netta,
We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and/or the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however since your body has extra demands on it right now you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways. Pay close attention to get plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables. You can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!
what about quick fried all natural chips…it says baked and quick fried…it only has white corn and sea salt…
Hi Rachel,
The Ingredients are good, but the quick fry is just another way to say “quick deep fry”. So keep looking for these ingredients with Baked chips. I hope this helps!
Hi
I started the Daniel fast today and I really don’t know if some things are okay. My first concern is eating wheat crackers. Can I eat those with peanut butter as a snack. I also wanted to know about what restaurants I could go to and eat out at
Thanks
Hi Jessica,
Wheat crackers typically have sugar and leavening in them, read the ingredients label and if so then they don’t work for the Daniel Fast. You may have to read a few Ingedients labels to find one that will work for the fast, but there are some out there. One good choice is Triscuits – the original variety. Unsweetened additive free Peanut butter is also fine. Most any restaurant will have something you can find to eat, such as salads, baked potatoes or stir fried vegetables with brown rice etc. If not look for a Vegetarian Restaurant in your area. I hope this helps!
If any at all does anyone know what cereals can
we eat on the fast?
Hi Chadney,
There are several cereals found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores (you’ll just need to read some Ingredients labels to check that there are no natural sugars added in them). Also, Ezekiel brand cereals and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: http://www.arrowheadmills.com/product/shredded-wheat-cereal and then there is always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal…. Oh, and another favorite is Muesli. I hope this helps!
HI! I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF IT IS OK TO EAT EGG WHITES ON THE DANIEL FAST?
No, the Daniel Fast is totally plant based.
Be blessed
Can we drink coconut water
The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water, so you can only use coconut water in recipes. Be Blessed on your fast!
Dotty
Is cream of wheat allowed in the fasting made with almond, soy or coconut milk? My pastor says salt is not allowed in the Daniel fast or is it up to the person fasting? Thank you and God bless’
Hi Dotty,
Wheat Farina (also known as Cream of Wheat) is Not a whole grain (the bran and most of the germ are removed in processing) making it unsuitable for the Daniel Fast. An alternative would be Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Wheat (only whole wheat as the ingredient), and then there’s always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal. Unsweetened additive free plant based milks(soy, almond, rice, coconut, etc) are allowed for use in recipes and on cereals. All spices and seasonings (free of sweeteners and additives) are allowed, including Natural or Kossher salt. Be Blessed!
Can coconut milk be substituted for the soy milk?
Absolutely, all plant based milks are allowed for use in recipes, Just make sure that it is free of sweeteners and additives.
What is the purpose of having no natural sweeteners from plants?
Hi Janet,
People get confused by thinking that if a product is natural then it can be on the fast. I can’t go into a long explanation on this post (see the book for more information), but fasting is about denying the flesh. One of the things denied on the Daniel Fast is sweetener. So it doesn’t matter if the sweeteners is sugar, honey, stevia or syrup. All of them are sweeteners and that’s why they are not allowed. Except for honey, all sweeteners come from plants . . .
I hope this helps.

I have just started the Daniel fast and was wandering if sugar free gum was ok to chew.
No, gum includes either sweeteners or chemicals.
Be blessed.
Okay, so can you use chicken broth to cook with? Like the 100% pure no MSG kind?? Or can I only use vegetable broth? Thanks.
Crystal
Hi Crystal,
No chicken broth on the fast, but yes to Vegetable broth only (additive and sweetener free). Be Blessed!
Hi, my husband & I just started the Daniel Fast. I was wondering, I know water is the only drinking beverage allowed on the Daniel Fast. My question is this, can I add the juice & pulp of a lemon to my water, or do I have to drink just straight water? Thanks.
Crystal
Hi Crystal,
Yes, or you can use lemon slices. As long as you can still call the beverage “water,” then adding natural products to it are fine. I like lemon or cucumber slices.
Be blessed!
I am considering starting this fast along with a friend and am trying to get all the info I may need. I am nursing a toddler and want to make sure I am still within limits to keep us both healthy. if I add fish or chicken, are there any special ways they should or should not be prepared?
Hi Brandi,
We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and/or the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however since your body has extra demands on it right now you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways. hi Susan want to begin fast in January. can I have my protein powder for breakfast ? it is made from 100%natural pea protein isolate with natural chocolate flavour, naturalcocoa extract, natural sweetener(thaumatin) Thank you .Denise
Hi Denise,
Actually, the sweeteners in the protein powder make it NOT okay for the Daniel Fast, even though they are natural. You can find unsweetened soy bean protein powder and then use it as a base for making your own protein shake with fresh fruit.
Be blessed!
Hi Susan, when I read nr 2 on your list of breakfast ideas (Rice cakes (made with brown rice) with peanut butter and raisins), I immediately thought it sounded like something a lady with pregnancy cravings would want, but I gave it a try and it is really good!
I know this is the breakfast idea blog, but we’ve also found that you can make great tasting “potato salad” meals hot or cold. Last night we had potato’s with red, yellow and green peppers and tomato all cut into small pieces and seasoned with salt, pepper and italian herbs! The combinations are limitless and it’s really tasty!
(You might have this in your cookbook)
I also agree with your comments that it should not be about food, but about the spiritual journey. I thank God that we have not had cravings or any headaches or detox symptoms. Also by the grace of God, all the other food that we still have in the house, including treats and sweets, have not been a temptation at all. We have set ourselves apart for a purpose and keeping our focus on Jesus! All honor and glory to God!
Thank you for your obedience with this site and the teachings, you are a great blessing. “May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you always, The Lord lift up His countenance upon You, and give you peace.” (Num 6:24 -26)
Thank you for your kind words! God is good, and I am always excited to hear praise reports with God’s people bragging on Him! Glory!
Is Daniel’s fast safe during pregnancy?

Hi! I am Hazel and I just started my daniel fasting. I am quite confused about drinking 100% concentrated fruit juices. Are they not really allowed? What about pasteurized 100% fruit juices. Please enlighten me.
Hi Hazel,
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. However, additive and sweetener free juices can be used in recipes and… in a Blended Smoothie. However, Blended smoothies can be a “grey area” ….. ‘smoothies are allowed when used as a liquid meal….When you drink it as a meal (and not as a snack, dessert or refreshment). I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
it is my first time to do Daniel fast. thank you for this blog! God bless!
Is it OK to use Stevia on the Daniel Fast?
Hi Carena,
There is no sweeteners of any kind allowed on the fast (natural or artificial), so no Stevia. I hope this helps!
Thank you for this website and blog. It is a really big help. God bless!
Hello im on day 2 of my fast so we can use soy milk with coconut and other flavors? No bread right? Just whole grains and brown rice?
Hi Kirston,
All “plant based milks” (Almond, Rice, Soy, Coconut, etc.) are acceptable on the fast, for use in recipes And on cereal (water is the only drinking beverage allowed). Just make sure they are sweetener and chemical free. You are correct, no unleavened breads (you can have whole grain tortillas that are free of sweeteners, additives and of course leavening agents-yeast, baking soda/powder).
Here is a general list of the Daniel Fast allowed foods: All foods must me Chemical additive free and sweetener free – All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All whole grain flours (and pastas), All Nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: Water only – spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices. For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
Just found this Smoothie for Breakfast. Its was so tasty I decided to limit the number of times I make it so as not to have something too enjoyable. Before I give the recipe, may I ask for prayer for my nephew (JSR) who is fighting Opiate addictions. He is the focus of my fast this time around.
Breakfast Smoothie:
1/4 cup oatmeal ground to powder in blender
1T cocoa powder
2T natural peanut butter
1 med or large frozen bananna
1 cup rice milk (or other unsweetened, plant based milk)
2 tbsp ground flax seeds (optional)
This is a good one, thank you.
Praying for freedom, it will come.
Hi, I am starting the Daniel Fast and do not see where fruits and breads are allowed in the Bible; can you clarify what you have in this blog to the word of God? Thank you.
Thank you Cheryl for your post. I have been teaching about the Daniel Fast since 2007 – and I have experienced that great pleasure of interacting with thousands of men, women and teens who use this method of partial fasting. Many people who are not able to go on a water- or liquid-only fast are able to enter into the powerful experience of prayer and fasting using the Daniel Fast. I truly believe God has ordained this fast for this time.
Thetwo foundational scriptures for the fast are Daniel 1:12 says, “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, rice and the like are all considered grown from seed.
Dan. 10:3 – I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; …Because of this, we eat no sweeteners of any kind, no deep fried foods and no fancy desserts. We also don’t use any stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol and water is the only drinking beverage.
So then, the Daniel Fast is a type of fast based on the combined fasting experiences of the prophet Along with typical Jewish fasting principles. To be clear, we are not trying to “reenact” the prophet’s fast/time of mourning, but rather use the experiences to serve as guidelines for a partial fast that can be experienced by people today. Giving up foods, submitting our fleshly cravings, and experiencing all those emotions and challenges is part of the fast. If we are merely substituting “yummy foods” for other “yummy foods” then we can miss the powerful lessons and the growth. On the other hand, the purpose of the Daniel Fast is much more than “to not enjoy food.” Otherwise we would all be eating some tasteless mush! Unlike traditional fasting where disciplines must focus on denying all food intake, the Daniel Fast disciplines must be exercised on denying specific foods only, as well as eating the right foods (which for most of us is a whole “new” world of discipline). As a reminder, the definition of fasting is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose, and is an experience for the whole person – body, soul and spirit. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that while all foods on the Daniel Fast are natural . . . not all natural foods are acceptable. Honey for example is one of those, although natural it is still a sweetener and not allowed on the fast.
I encourage you to study the information on this blog and at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com as there is a wealth of information about the Daniel Fast. You may then even consider going into a deeper study about the Daniel Fast. If you are interested you might want to get a copy of The Daniel Fast where I go into great depth about fasting and the Daniel Fast in particular. I hope this helps!
we can have soy milk during the fast??? unsweetened? flavored?
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. But yes, you can use any plant based milk that is unsweetened and additive free (almond, rice, soy, coconut, etc.) during your fast with recipes and on cereal. Be Blessed on your Fast!
I’m on my third week and feel great! My husband and I have decided to eat this way indefinitely. God Bless!
Ok so I have 2 questions.. I see recipes that use vanilla extract but even the pure has alcohol.. I don’t know where to find approved vanilla? Also having problems finding dried fruit even at the whole food store that is on the approved list.. suggestions?
Hi Becca,
Pure vanilla extract free of sweeteners and additives is fine, any alcohol in the vanilla based cooks out and is not an issue. Dried fruit is always a challenge to find without any sugar or additives added in, and it varies not only from brand to brand but also from product to product (for instance, one brand may have nothing added into their dried raisins but then have sweetener or additives added to their dried apricots). Reading the INGREDIENTS labels of every dried fruit package is the only way to be sure. Begin with the health food isle in your local grocery store, then you may need to continue your search at a Health Food store, but even there you’ll need to check the Ingredients label for added natural sugars. I wish I could give more specific information to you. One thing that might help: Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C that is used for a natural preservative. It’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. Be Blessed!
I am on day 5 of my fast. I am so glad you have the food list. Thank you for sharing it. I didn’t realize I was allowed to have grains on the fast, so I have been just doing fruits, veggies and beans. It will be great to be able to have oatmeal for breakfast. Yay! Thank you again for posting all this useful info. Blessings!
Are organic, vegetarian refried beans OK?
They could be okay, what’s in the ingredients list?
Thank you… this information was very helpful.
A lot of information here, this is my first day on the Daniel Fast…I’m having a problem with breakfast thus far, the only thing I’m able to eat is fruit and oatmeal? This is going to be hard for me for 21days. What else is a good breakfast food… quick for work?
Of course there is good ‘Old Fashioned Oatmeal’, and for boxed cereals are the Ezekiel brands, also shredded wheat and other boxed cereals with ingredients that comply with the Daniel Fast. With all of these options you can put on them fruits, nuts and a unsweetened plant based milk such as soy, almond or rice. Another favorite breakfast of ours, is a bean/rice/onion/peppers with spices burrito wrap, these can be prepared in advanced and heated in the morning for a on-the-go breakfast. Enjoy!
Quinoa and shine. It is gluten free made from brown rice grits and quinoa flakes. It tastes a little like grits. It is extremely filling and is the only grain that is considered a complete protein b/c it contains all of the amino acids. Plus it contains, potassium, magnesium, and iron. It only takes 2-3 min to cook.
Hello i’m just starting my fast and would like to know if cooking the vegetables in juices from meats against the fast rules? Thank you.
Hi Monica,
The Daniel fast is totally plant based so you so don’t want to even consume the animal protein that would be saturated in your vegetables by this method of cooking. I hope this helps!
