Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” -——Daniel 10:2, 3

Wow. I feel like an idiot. I am on day five of my twenty one day fast and I have done a couple of things wrong. Not on puprose but it is still my fault cause I didn’t research it enough before hand. I am seventeen years old, homeschooling and working.. I already see GOD working in my life.. Being the only person in my family that is fasting it has had it’s difficult moments. I know you get a bunch of “Thank you notes” every day but this has been particularly helpful to me. Just by reading Daniel chapters 1 and 10. I messed up a little at the beginning but won’t again. From now on, JUST plant based foods. Thank you for helping me to start out 2011 in the way I was called to live:) I found a bunch of answers just by reading other people’s questions.

    January 5, 2011
    • And thank you, Catie.

In the midst of trying to keep up with all the questions . . . your message has sprinkled joy into my heart. I am so happy for you and that at such a young age you are willing to consecrate yourself for a period of prayer and fasting! I know God has a great future for you and you can realize it as you continue to put your trust in Him.

Be blessed on your fast and thanks for your very sweet and welcome message!

    Susan,
I am so extremely grateful that I came across your website several months ago in preparation for the Daniel Fast. My church began the fast on Monday, January 3rd. My husband and I are doing the complete fast and have had much success up to this point. It is only day 3 for us but we have both already lost 4, 3 lbs, respectively. I have 2 questions. The first is, I have been having a slight runny nose and some cough. Is it okay to take meds while on the fast? If so, what would you recommend? Also, I know it is important to exercise during the fast, however, since neither one of us is consuming a lot of calories I would think that intense cardio would be out of the question. What exercises do you recommend? Thank you so much for your dedication to this great ministry. Be Blessed!

    January 5, 2011
    • You can exercise as usual . . . or add walking and light weights. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat and when balanced meals are eaten it gives the body all it needs for good health.

    Hi everyone!

Dear Susan, I want to thank you and bless you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the wonderful job you are doing. Your guidance and instruction about the Daniel fast has inspired and edified my physical and spiritual life greatly.

I went on a Daniel Fast for the first time, last year. I am on my second one on 2011. I have been fasting at the beginning of each new year, for quite a while to seek God’s direction and used to fast for 21 days. A sister from my church introduced me to your book. I strongly recommend everyone to read it thoroughly. It has all the information, guidance and ideas you need to have a successful fast. I found that if you really set aside some time to read, study and pray with this book in your hands, you will get all answers to your questions. There is so much detail in the book that all you really need is pen and paper and the Lord himself will lead you through your fast.

I cooked many of the recipes in the book. Also became creative and came up with my own variations. Also I’d like to remember this is not about eating, trying new meals and enjoying them. I notice a lot of us concentrate so much in what you can or not eat. But read the book! On the ingredients list it says it all. No honey allowed, so when you read the labels, anything that says “honey” you just put it back in the shelf!

Before I started, I created a meal plan for 3 weeks, a shopping list (divided in weekly shopping trips). It wasn’t hard at all. It is quite a new and nice experience. You learn so much about nutrients your body need, also about preservatives that only hurt and add toxic to your body.

I learned the outrageous amount of sugar we consume daily.
I want to continue eating healthy not only during the fast, but after I am done. I notice a lot of good changes in my body while I am on the fast. Just like the bible says: At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

    Blessings to all!

I am getting so much information from the quesions and answers. I like green olives in my salad. Are they permitted?

    January 5, 2011
    • Hi Sylvia . . . READ THE LABEL to see if the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast.

Most green olives are allowed, but there are so many different products on the market that reading the list of ingredients is the only way to know for sure.

      Be blessed!

      Hi Teddy,
Yes, two things – #1 Increase your water intake (your dailey water intake should be 1/2 your body weight in ounces, ie: 160 lbs.= 80 oz. of water dailey) #2 Bananas, to increase potassium levels.

    Good Morning Susan,
Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that this site has been an inspiration to me and my husband. To read and learn more about the Daniel’s Fast has really given us the extra desire we need to see it through. This is our first Daniel’s Fast and although we are not doing it for 21 days this time we feel so blessed to have a site where we can get valuable spiritual information. Continue to do the will of God as it certainly blesses His people!

***On another note…me and my husband were debating on whether cashews are exceptable…the ingredients list: cashews, sea salt, peanut and or cottonseed oil, but my husband told me to look at the nutrition facts and it has 2g sugar…so to eat or not to eat is the question? Either answer is okay with me, but out of curiousity where does the sugar come from if not listed in the ingredients????

    Litisha

    • I am blessed by God for using me to help and teach His people. Thank you for your encouraging message. I am thankful.

You want to look at the ingredients. This is the list that gives you the information to see whether a prepared food is allowed on the Daniel Fast. Foods where sweeteners have been added as an ingredient are not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

Be blessed and thanks again for your kind words.

    January 5, 2011

      January 5, 2011

ok on the fast, can you drink milk? what about honey? I know i should have prepared better for the fast, especially with this being my first one.

    January 5, 2011
    • Hi Andre,

This is a great opportunity to learn from your experience. I encourage you to study and learn about the fast at this blog and at http://www.daniel-fast.com. You may not be prepared for today . . . but you can prepare yourself for the remainder of the time.

The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based eating so no animal products. Also, no sweeteners on the Daniel Fast, so honey is not allowed.

      Be blessed.

Hi Susan! I wanted to know is it ok if we are able to Juice Fruits on the fast and drink along w/ Green powder! I usually drink it in the morning.

    January 4, 2011
    • This sounds kind of borderline. Is this a beverage or a liquid meal? That’s the fine line. The only beverage on the Daniel Fast. But many people now nourish themselves with smoothies and other liquid meals. So you’ll need to determine if what you’re suggesting is a beverage or a meal . . .

      I hope this helps.

    Hi Susan,

I just wanted to tell you how elated I was when I saw your book at the Christian Family Store and read how the Lord has blessed you and your ministry since I first became aware of you! I bought your ebook in 2008 when I did my first Daniel Fast in preparation for my wedding. My now husband and I had great enlightenment and grew together deeply during the fast. I have done another Daniel Fast that I felt was kind of cheating as it allowed natural sugar substitutes. I am excited to start this year off with your anointed book and grow close with the Lord by fasting again.

It is so encouraging to see how He has blessed your faithfulness. I’m excited to see how He is going to use you to push other closer to Him!

    Much Love!

    January 4, 2011
    • Dearest Kelly,

I am touched by your message. You’ve watched all this unfold. God gave me an assignment and He continues to walk with me as I fulfill the call. I am so blessed and my heart is full when I hear from folks like you! Our God is so good . . . and our world so small. Our body of Christ is precious and I am so glad you shared this message with me. You have put a smile on my face and I thank you!

I hope the very best for you on your Daniel Fast!

    Hi Susan,
I thank the LORD that so many of my brothers and sisters are doing the Daniel Fast. The timing is so very perfect especially after Christmas and the New Year. I am striving to hear the LORD’s voice much clearer, and to develop good eating habits for a lifetime. I know some lose weight during the fast, but that is really not my main objective. One question: I am eating lots of salad and adding no type of dressing at all. Are croutons allowed on the Daniel fast? I know they are bread, but I need something to give a little flavor to the salad. I also add just a drizzle of Olive oil, and takes away the dryness. Thanks so much for all the info you have shared. Blessings, and strength to you and your family this brand New Year the LORD has given us!

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Mary,

No croutons are not allowed because of their ingredients. You could add sunflower seeds or crunch vegetables like radishes or carrots. You can use salad dressing. My favorite bottled dressing for the Daniel Fast is Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing.

      I hope this helps.

I have a question… Our church is doing the Daniel Fast. We began Monday (Jan 3). Yesterday (day one), I had EXTREME “withdraws” I guess.. I usually drink one cup of coffee a day and I obviously didn’t do that yesterday. I was so sick that I had a migraine all day and was unable to get out of bed because of it. I am a stay-at-home mom and had to have my sister come over and help me. My husband and I are both doing the fast together and he advised maybe I should do the fast, but wean myself off of the coffee rather than quit cold turkey.. Finally, last night, I drank a cup of coffee and I seemed better. It was so strange… My question is– is it typical to have that kind of withdraw from skipping ONE cup of coffee?? Also, does it defeat the whole purpose if I allow myself coffee? I really want to do the fast but I dont want to jeopordize my days with my children bc I am sick. Lastly, is the Daniel Fast ok for nursing mothers to do? Thanks for your help. GOD BLESS!

    Brittany

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Brittany,

Different people experience caffeine detox differently and it doens’t always have to do with the amount of caffeine consumed. Here is the lesson: next time taper off the coffee so that you have prepared your body for the Daniel Fast. Use this as a learning experience and also see if this is an issue in other areas of your life . . . do you jump in without preparation only to have results that are disappointing to you?

This is all part of the fast and why it’s such a valuable experience.

Fasting should never bring harm to the body. Drink lots of water – at least 1/2 gallon each day – and eat banana and canteloupe. Use your husband’s advice this time . . . but learn the lesson . . . now that you know.

The Daniel Fast is very healthy for nursing or pregnant mothers. You may want to supplement the fast with small amounts of chicken, fish or cheese. You can prepare them using Daniel Fast guidelines. This would be considered a “special dietary need” and you are still fasting!

      Be blessed!

    January 4, 2011
    • Yes, if all the ingredients are compatible with the Daniel Fast. Check out the ingredients on the label.

Be blessed! Great to see that you are preparing yourself now. Taper off caffeine and sugar now so that you can minimize withdrawals.

This is my first time trying the Daniel Fast, Our church started the fast on this past Sunday, and I jump right into following the crowd and did not wing myself and did not consult God on it. The first day I totally failed because didn’t research on the do and don’t first. I didn’t realize this fast was so involved.

I feel like a failure because I have to start over. What’s is your thought? I don’t think God will penalize me.

    January 4, 2011
    • Dear Shay,
Always remember the primary purpose of a fast is to consecrate yourself unto God(more praying and hearing the voice of the Lord). God does not penalize, just shake it off and try again and keep trying the entire fast. I promise you as you stay dedicated to the heart of the fast God will bless you. Read Susan’s article on preparation for the fast and letting go of the past. Be blessed my sister and know that God loves you. I know that you will post a victory report at the end of your fast.

I notice that you say read the label over and over. My question when it comes to sugar on the label it dose not tell if it is natural or refine such as the label on Whole grain raisin bran cereal. It tells me it has 19 gr of sugar but is that natural sugar from the raisin, or has it been added. very confusing
can you help on defining the labels or how I can get help on reading the Labels

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Tommy,

If sugar or sweetener is listed as an ingredient, then that makes the product not allowed on the Daniel Fast. This is different than the nutritional analysis.

I know butter is not permitted on the Daniel fast. But, is there a substitute? Thanks for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with us!

The first preferred substitute is olive oil – second would be New Balance, which is an all natural soy-based spread.

I use coconut “oil” on whatever I might want butter on. At room temperature it is more the consistency of butter. Virgin coconut oil doesn’t taste very coconutty, but the extra virgin has the coconut taste.

    Dear Susan:

I ask one thing; Iask that you pray with and for me as I begin toprepare
myself (spirit, soul and body) for the Daniel Fast. A friend mentioned it only
this morning and at first it sounded to me like a fad. It would not leave my
mind however and so I found your website and began to read/research.
This has now spoken to my heart…literally, since I was told yesterday that
my cholesterol and blood pressure are both high. Thank you. I intend to buy
the first cookbook…do some more shopping and get to work by next week.

Susan, it’s me again. I was wondering why some of the recipes have things we are not allowed to eat alone, such as eggs, white rice, all purpose flour, cornmeal, white sugar, grated cheddar cheese and crackers. These are in the recipe’s for Daniel’s Four-Grain Waffles, Vegetarian Dirty Rice and Black Bean and Corn Loaf. I don’t want to be a pest, but I haven’t gotten out to get the book yet and these recipes were taken from the book by another woman in the church. Thank you so much.
    Jackie

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Jackie,

These are not my recipes. There is a lot of erroneous information out there about the Daniel Fast including cookbooks and websites with wrong teaching. I do believe the reason my books are all the #1 bestsellers is because all the information is well-researched, biblically based and consistent. I’ve answer thousands of questions and I’ve been teaching about the Daniel Fast since 2007 after God gave me this assignment. It truly was a miracle of God.

So, the recipes you mentioned are not from me . . . I do suggest you ask those who developed the recipes about them in light of Daniel 1, Daniel 10 and typical Jewish fasting principles.

      Be blessed!

I see that Tofu is on the list of items that are allowed; are there any restrictions on tofu that I should look for? Anything I should stay away from? I did a brief search and found that some brands of tofu are processed. This my first time adding tofu to my diet, so guidance on the best type of tofu is appreciated. Sorry if this question is silly! Never had any experience with this food.

God bless you for this wonderful outreach! I don’t really need the cookbook, but I’m going to buy it just to support your work. :-)

You can prepare tofu in many ways (you will fine recipes in the cookbook you purchase). I like to use it like eggs for vegetable scrambles. You can also season it and fry it or use it in soups.

I am so thrilled that the Holy Spirit led me to your site on Bible Gateway on Sunday morning January 2, 2011. I started on January 3, and already I am seeing results. Since I gave my life to the Lord 11 years ago I have dreams and cannot remember them. The first night of the fast I had a dream in which the Lord helped me to remember and caused me to wake up and tear down some stronghold.

God is just good. God bless you and your ministry as well as all my Christian brothers and sisters who are a part of this fast.

Quick question, can I use natural honey and what about coconut water?

    January 4, 2011
    • Praise God! He so wants to interact with us. We just need to align ourselve so He can!

No honey or other sweeteners on the Daniel Fast. I’m not real sure of the ingredients in cocounut water. The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. Read the ingredients on the coconut water and then use it in recipes if it’s okay.

      January 4, 2011
      • Arden Elizabeth #

Coconut water is from a “nut” that grows in tropical climate. It is not really a “manmade” product.

        January 7, 2011
      • Yes, that’s right. But manufacturers often add ingredients to canned, bottled or packaged products. One of the most commonly added ingredients is sweeteners.

        Thanks!

  31. Thank you so much for all of the information you post for us to use. Everything is so helpful. I did the Daniel Fast in October and had great results, losing weight (14lbs), having more energy (no afternoon crashes) and just generally feeling much better and being closer to God. The few first days were hard (I didn’t ween myself off of the caffeine or sugar), but after that it went pretty smoothly. I did have a few days here and there where I was tempted, but I perservered! The Daniel Fast is the first one I had ever tried and am thankful that I heard about it from a friend. After a chaotic Christmas season, I decided I need to go back on the fast to get focused again on what is important. I started up yesterday and look forward to what God has in store for me for the next 21 days, and beyond. Thank you again Susan for being such a blessing!!!

As a nursing mom, should I add some chicken or fish? Or can I just rely on beans and tofu for protein. I would like to omit all animal products but if I have to add it for nursing purposes then I would.

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Venus,

I suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however your body has extra demands on it, so you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways.

      Be blessed on your fast.

    Hello Susan,

I recently came across your website of great information concerning the Daniel Fast. My church will begin this journey this upcoming Monday. After reading your information and blog post, I have come to realize that this is a restrictive fast. I will be going to Barns and Nobles to purchase your book so I may be successful and survive the 21 days without a lot of my common foods. I do have a few questions about whether or not certain foods are still eligible for the fast. I wanted to know if you could eat any peanut butter, can you eat jelly, can you have wheat bread or does it have to be whole grain, can you have corn bread and if so what kind, can you have waffles and if so what kind, can you have ritz crackers or do they have to be the plain white crackers and lastly can you eat wheat thins. Thanks for any insight you may provide.

      100% peanut butter is okay
unsweetened fruit spread is okay – be sure there are no sweeteners or chemicals
no leavened foods on the Daniel Fast, so raised breads are out – same goes for waffles – no leavened foods
I don’t think Ritz crackers or wheat thins work, but the for-sure-answer is in the ingredients. You can have original Triscuits as they are made with whole wheat flour and other ingredients that comply with the Danie Fast.

Be blessed on your fast. It’s great that you are preparing now! You are setting yourself up for success rather than having to chase things down at the last minute. Good on ya.

Thanks a lot for the information. I am thinking this process is going to be great, but also very expensive as I have to basically shop for all new foods and items. Hopefully this strictness last well after the fast is over because this definitely sounds like a healthier way of living. I have one more question, so if I want some type of bread or roll then what can i eat, make or purchase. I think through this process I will become a more experienced cook! Thanks again

      • Hi Leksha,

The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat and can be cost effective. That does require more cooking and planning, but it needn’t be expensive compared to typical eating. Raised bread is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. There are some crackers you can have or flat bread such as nan or chapatties. You can find recipes for both in the Daniel Fast Cookbooks or the Daniel Fast book.

        Be blessed on your fast.

I have a question about a sweetner. I know that no sweetner is aloud on the daniel fast but what if it is an extract derived from a leaf? Im referring to the stevia leaf extract? Its not a sugar, it has no glycemic index? but has a sweet tast like fruit, but no fructose. Or if not the extract how bout the leaf?

    January 4, 2011
    • No sweeteners . . . including natural or very healthy sweeteners such as stevia or agave nectar.

While all the foods on the Daniel Fast are natural . . . not all natural foods are allowed on the Daniel Fast. This is one of those times . . .

This is my first time being involved with the Daniel Fast. I notice in verse 2 (ch 10). He also didn’t bath or shave. I understand what happens when I dont bath for just one day, however why is this part not included in the fast since its just as important to the discipline of the point being made in the fast?

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Shari,

Daniel was mourning. So the Word says he didn’t annoint himself with oil. At that time men would use oil on their head and in their hair. But Daniel was mourning – in an attitude of deep consecration so he didn’t annoint himself with oil for this period of prayer and fasting.

You are okay to take a bath . . . we can follow Daniel’s model in other ways as we consecrate ourselves (separate ourselves unto the Lord) by changing our daily habits to make more time for the Lord and focus more diligently on Him.

      I hope this helps!

Are Nutri-Grain 100% fruit bar allowed in the Daniel Fast?

    January 4, 2011
    • Hi Gail,

You will need to READ THE LABEL and see if the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast. If they are free of sweeteners, chemicals and/or leavening they are probably okay. But the answer is in the list of ingredients.

      January 4, 2011

Are 100% fruit juices (with nothing added) allowed? Your food list mentions that fruits are ok if they are “juiced.”

    Thanks!

    January 4, 2011
    • They are okay to use in recipes. The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water (see Daniel 1).

I was reading through the breakfast receipes and had a question about oatmeal. Reading the lable, oatmeal appears to be just shaved oats. Your receipe calls for oatbran, which I will also look for in the healthfood store. But , is there a problem with oatmeal that I am overlooking?

    January 3, 2011
    • No, oatmeal is a whole grain so it’s acceptable.

so natural rasins should be ok for a snack

        January 5, 2011
      • Yes, but again read the ingredient list on the label to make sure the producer has not added sweetener.

Remember fasting friends: READ THE LABELS on prepared foods to see if the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast.

Hi, I was wondering if there is a store bought bread I can buy while on the fast.

    Thanks

    January 3, 2011
    • Raised bread is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. You can have unleavened bread that is made of ingredients that comply with the Daniel Fast.

      January 3, 2011
      • Ericka B. #

What is unleavened bread. Is Wheat bread okay?

        January 4, 2011
      • Unleavened bread is like matzo or nan. The ingredients are usually very simple – like whole wheat flour, water and oil.

They are absent of leavening agents like yeast, baking powder and the like. Wheat bread is not allowed because it has yeast or some other leavening agent.

Please tell me why we cannot drink decafe coffee? So we could use Soy milk in place of 2% milk? WE can also use brown sugar? These questions will help me a lot.
    Thank you so much.
    Jackie

    January 3, 2011
    • Hi Jackie,

In Daniel 1 the prophet asked to be fed only pulse (food grown from seed) and drink only water. So that’s why the Daniel Fast is a plant-based eating plan and the only beverage is water . . .

In Daniel 10 he ate no meat, nor precious or sweet foods and no wine crossed his lips – the precious and sweet food eliminates sweeteners from the Daniel Fast.

Unsweetened soy milk can be used in recipes, but the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water . . .

      Be blessed on your fast!

I’d planned to start my fast on the first day of the new year. I began the day in earnest, but my dear husband decided to make fried rice, baked chicken & seafood gumbo. How could I refuse? Thankfully, my hubby went back to work this a.m., so it’s been a good day of consecration! Glory to God! Only twenty more days to go!

Hi Susan, I was told that I could use corn tortillas..is this true?

    January 3, 2011
    • You will need to check out the ingredients . . . and how they are prepared. If they are deep fried they are not allowed.

You can make your own – I’ve included a recipe in the Daniel Fast Cookbook Version II

    Thanks,

    P.S. Email if possibe

    • You can find dried fruit without chemicals at health food stores or in the natural foods section of most supermarkets. Unsweetened soy milk is allowed on the Daniel Fast.

    Susan:
Thank you for taking so much time and energy to share with individuals who are truly looking for a breakthrough and can’t seem to find the path… I have found that incredible things happen while I am fasting. I have only done small fasts; 5 days etc. and a lot of 72 hour fasts. I have always been intriqued with Daniel’s fast but have felt isolated since I have not found any friends or family members that are willing to join me. The thought of having an opportunity to share the process with others seems more welcoming. Could you share your thoughts about the need to want to fast with others vs solo-fasts?

    Ricardo

    January 3, 2011
    • Hi Ricardo,

Entering into a time of prayer and fasting is consecrating ourselves unto the Lord . . . and there are times when doing this alone can be a very powerful spiritual experience. Just you and God. You will want to prepare for the Fast and think about how you will spend your time, what you will eat and determine the purpose for your fast.

I usually do the Daniel Fast by myself – except for the thousands of believers throughout the world who also fast :-)

So while I am alone . . . not really. The body of Christ is here and it’s wonderful to hear from so many on this blog and on Facebook.

Is yucca allowed on the fast? I would love to slice and brown it in a little olive oil.

    January 3, 2011
    • Yes, yucca is a root vegetable and allowed on the Daniel Fast. Your plans for preparation are perfect!

    what about rice milk?

    January 3, 2011
  48. Robin #

Hi Susan, I found a vegetable soup recipe which calls for evaporated milk. What can I substitute for that?

    January 3, 2011
    • You might try unsweetened soy milk . . . it will be different, but might work as a good substitute.

      January 3, 2011
  49. Eggs should be OK, my church is fasting and my Pastor did not call it the Daniel fast, however we are doing the 21 days, and no dairy products. An egg is not a dairy product, so it should be OK.

However, I think we can agree to disagree.

    January 3, 2011
    • Mamie,

In Daniel 1 the prophet asked that he be fed only pulse, which is food grown from seed. The Daniel Fast is completely plant-based so that’s why eggs are not included in the fast. This isn’t an issue as to whether an egg is dairy or not. It’s that eggs are not grown from seed.

I hope this helps with the confusion.

      Be blessed.

I have started a 7-day fast. I feel the Lord is calling me to meditate on His Word, but I don’t know exactly how to go about it. I found a website called “the christianmeditator.com” I feel unsure about their techniques on meditation. Would you be so kind as to check out the information and let me know if you agree with it. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

        January 4, 2011
      • Hi Lorna,

I don’t review other people’s sites, but I can suggest a book I wrote titled “How to Study the Bible to Change Your Life.” It includes instructions for meditation. I am also really enjoying Live a Praying Life by Jennifer Kennedy Dean.
