Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” -——Daniel 10:2, 3

DFfbWelcome! The purpose of this site is to offer valuable and complete information about the Daniel Fast. As the Daniel Fast Blogger, my #1 goal is to help you have a successful fasting experience. More and more Christian men and women are choosing the Daniel Fast as their guideline to enter into the spiritual discipline. While the Daniel Fast is a partial fast, (rather than total abstention from all food) it still provides many of the attributes of denying the self and seeking God.

This blog is designed as a “gathering place” for information and resources about the Daniel Fast to serve those seeking God in this manner. Please “cruise” the blog. Remember, this is a blog format, so you will need to page down to see all the posts. Also, leave comments if you have ideas, questions, or comments.

Also, join our Facebook community! It’s a powerful way to stay connected to others who are seeking God through an extended period of prayer and fasting.

    • Hi Kristiana,

You can learn more about the Daniel Fast on this blog. There is a lot more you can eat on the Daniel Fast – not just water, fruit and vegetables.

I also encourage you to discuss this with your mother in a mannerly and mature way. She wants you to learn the powerful lessons about prayer and fasting . . . so perhaps you can negotiate a compromise with her so that both of your goals can be met. That’s my suggestion . . .

    Hello,
I have a question about hummus. i noticed two ingredients in the canned and dried beans to retain color and firmness (DISODIUM EDTA AND SODIUM BISULFITE) and they do not sound natural to me. what kind of chickpeas should i use? any brand suggestions?

    • These are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. I’m able to buy my store brand for just about every other kind of bean with only water and salt added. But for some reason, they add those chemicals to the garbonzo beans. So that’s when I reach for the organic variety and they are just garbonzos, water and salt.

      Be blessed!

Is the Daniel Fast safe to do while excessively breastfeeding?

    January 10, 2011
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Jessica,
We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however your body has extra demands on it, so you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways.

Thanks for the tips about making sure we’re sticking to the discipline of the fast. It can be really a fad thing and made useless if we don’t die to our flesh. Thanks for the reminder.

      Corina,
The only drinking beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. Unsweetened plant-based milks such as Soy, Almond, Rice milk can be used in recipes and when making a ‘Smoothie’ as a meal replacement, just not as a drinking beverage.

      Hi Gaylyn,
Thank you for your encouraging words. Here is one of the two verses that serve as the anchors for the Daniel Fast: Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Daniel 1:12 Daniel asked that he drink only water . . . thus, water is the only beverage on the Daniel Fast.

Hi Susan and Daniel Fast Team,
My church is starting the Daniel Fast on the 16th. They are doing a different variety that allows some sweeteners and beverages like tea. My husband and I have chosen to use your fast because it’s more natural. (Actually I made the choice for us.) I’m a non-traditional student and will be starting the semester on the 18th. My husband is an outside salesman and is in his vehicle most of the day. I have looked through the recipes in your book and am excited about different foods. I’ve marked a bunch of breakfast, dinner, salad and side dishes, but am having difficulty finding lunch-type foods that we can take with us. I have access to a microwave some days, but my husband does not. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

    January 10, 2011
    • Hi Traci,

Thanks for your post . . . just to avoid me receivign a boatload of questions about your church doing a “different variety” of the Daniel Fast that allows sweeteners and tea . . . the Daniel Fast is based on scriptures that clearly don’t allow either.

I’m not saying the church leadership is wrong in creating a type of fast for the congregation, but it’s not the Daniel Fast.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Daniel 1:12

I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks. Daniel 10:3

You might consider packing wraps, hearty salads, brown rice and stir-fry and peanut butter on rice cakes. You can also pack hot soups and stews in those thermal soup cups. I think there are some great thermal products on the market for packing hot lunches. Then you can add the fruit and vegetables and water!

Be blessed and thanks for your message!

      Hi Traci,
We have run into this in our household as well. What we found to work great is to make a wrap with whole wheat tortillas (Ezekial brand is a good one). In our local grocery store there’s only 1 maybe out of….all their options available that is compatable with the fast. So you do have to read ingredients on every package. Once you got that part covered, then you can wrap up just about anything, from peanut butter to a spicy bean, rice and vegie mix. even salad is awesome in a wrap. I usually warm the tortilla first it makes wrapping it up easier. Grab and apple and a banana, water, water, water and you are set for the day.
      Be Blessed on your journey!

This is my 3rd day of the fast and i have a horrible headace and feel like i could throw up is there anything i could do to help this? Or do i just have to ride it out?

    January 10, 2011
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Diane,
Drink Lots of Water! These are symptoms of withdrawals (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) your body going through detox from caffeine, sugar or chemicals. If the urge to throw up is from the severity of your headache, then it sounds as if it has advanced to a migrane status, and at this point you are the sole judge as to your discomfort level, and may need to take further action. If tolerable, these symptoms will pass in a few days (3-7) Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process.
As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as hot weather, cold weather, exercise or Detox. I hope this helps!

Today is my fist day and first time on Daniel fast, I hope and pray all will go well with me in Jesus Name. I am fasting for spiritual growth and for my husband to know God as Lord and savior of his life. It is my dream and a prayer of my heart to see my husband serving the Lord. It is not easy and it is painful when the head of the house doesn’t know God as without God we don’t have direction. I believe as i am doing something i have never done before i am going to see the greatness of God. My husband Thys Mokoena is going to serve the Lord In Jesus Name. Please pray for him as well that’s all i NEED and I believe God it will happen through your prayers. Thanks

Standing in agreement with you my sister-in-Christ. It is the Lord’s desire that ALL will come to know him fully. Speak that which is not, as though it is. Believe, by faith, that your husband is already having that revelation and pray for the Lord to send his laborers into his path. I am so excited for you and the transformation this will make for him, you and your marriage. The closer the both of you draw closer to the Lord individually, the closer you will become to one another automatically. Blessings!

  18. Like the rest of the Christian community I started my Daniel Fast today. Consequently, I did not appropriately plan for it as I was still outlining my purpose and plan today. However, after a few small meals I quickly realized that this Fast is going to turn into one thing even though I have planned for something completely different. Being too busy with my career and ministry, I have always defaulted my response for other commitments as, “I do not have time for that”. But, through the Fast I have to essentially prepare all of my foods myself, which has helped me to realize that I do have time for those things I make time for. I am praying for myself and many of my fellow Believers that we make more time for God, in our thoughts and activities. May God be glorified for our personal sacrifices during this time of meditation and preparation for what is to come in 2011 and beyond.

      Hi Elizabeth,
Some people do lose a little weight on the fast and some do not. I think it just depends on what your normal eating habits are and how different this is from what your body is acustomed to, exercise and of course portion size.

    January 9, 2011
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi PE,
Are you drinking enough water? Your daily intake should be half your body weight in ounces (ie: 160lbs = 80 ounces daily) If this is your body going through detox, then you should be coming to the end (which is different for everyone, appx. 3-7 days) Increased water intake will speed the process up by flushing your system. Also, are you getting enough protein? Focus on leafy green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans with rice, and soy products. I hope this helps.

I am very confused. Some modern day Christians say that the Daniel Fast allows All fruits; All vegetables; All whole grains, i.e., whole wheat, brown rice, millet, grits, etc.; All nuts and seeds, i.e., sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts, sesame. Also nut butters including peanut butter. How is this determined? Daniel 10, 2,3 reads exactly as you have it printed at the beginning of this blog. How do these other things relate to vegetables, and water. Or when Daniel says “No pleasant foods, no meats”… does this statement mean all these other so-called acceptable foods? I suppose what I am really asking is: Is there a biblical explanation about the Daniel Fast as interpreted by the modern-day Christian. Thanks Babe Latoison

    January 9, 2011
    • The Hebrew text in Daniel 1:12 is translated like this:

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

Pulse is food grown from seed . . .

      • Hi,

We are only two women trying to keep up with a boatload of messages today on top of all the other emails . . . so we can’t always answer them as quickly as you may need. You will find all the anwers on the blog. So next time I encourage you to use the search option for the product and you will find where it’s been asked and answered before . . .

You need to check out the ingredients. But while I don’t have any Earth Balance on hand right now, I do know that at least one of them is all soy-based and a suitable alternative for butter or margerine.

        Be blessed on your fast!

I’m vegan and I use Earth Balance. I’m not sure it’s allowed in this fast (I’ve just begun research on it) but it is an excellent substitute for butter.

        Here are the ingredients: http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/eb_pdfs/products/original-nutrition-info.pdf

It would be allowed on the Daniel Fast.

I apologize if I sounded impatient! I am grateful for all that you do! I did a search and read backwards last night and this a.m. and for the life of me I could not find the answer to my question about alternatives to butter. Sometimes I don’t do too well with internet stuff and can’t seem to locate it.

I purchased the Earth Balance a bit ago and it does say, “dairy free” so sounds good.

Thanks again and again, pls accept my apologizes if I sounded impatient. God bless

      January 9, 2011
    • I think you are referring to Earth Balance which is a soy-based spread

      http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/

      January 9, 2011
      • Susanelizabeth Turner #

Yes that’s it. I am assuming it’s okay since it says it’s dairy free.

What I am wanting to focus on is not how much I can eat but on the real purpose of the fast …for me. It truly needs to be ” I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”

I don’t want this to be about my comfort but about God’s will. As I heard someone say once, “God is more concerned about my growth and relationship with Him than He is with my comfort.”

    Susan,
I wanted to share a product I found at a local health food store that I feel will be a great food on the Daniel Fast. I have looked and looked for some kind of unleavened bread. I was so excited when I found the Ezekiel bread at the health food store; Then after reviewing the ingredients several times, I finally found “fresh yeast” at the bottom of the list, so I decided that it was not acceptable to use. But I did find Manna Bread (Millet Rice). Its ingredients are: Sprouted Organic whole wheat kernels, filtered water, organic millet, and organic brown rice. I PRAY that I am right in assuming this is an acceptable item for the Daniel Fast!! I tried it today with my vegetable soup, heated with some Nature Balance spread on it and it was VERY DELICIOUS AND SATISFYING!!! I almost felt like I was eating cake ( and cheating)!! It has a slight sweet taste from the sprouted seeds, but no added sweetener, oils, preservatives, yeast, or dairy products…..WOW…..I am so glad I found this and wanted to share it with others who are looking for a bread that they can eat. It is very costly, though. That’s the only drawback. But I decided it would be worth it to me. Susan, please let me know if I am wrong about this product! Thanks!

    January 9, 2011
    • Hi Dawn,

No, you are correct that Manna Bread is allowed. You also might look for Ezekiel Tortillas in the frozen food section as a good choice for veggie wraps while on your fast.

      Be blessed.

Hello, I have been reading the blogs and been on the website everyday since Jan.1st. While reading I didn’t see anything about not being about to drink flavored water. I could have over looked it and if I did my apologies but before I drink this I want to make sure if it is acceptable. Thank you so much!!!

    January 9, 2011
    • Hi Allyson,

Thanks for taking the time to search for the answer. I am sure you discovered that most of the questions are asked and answered numerous times!

Flavored waters are allowed as long as all the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast . . . here is the fine line. If you can in all honesty call the beverage water, then it’s allowed. If you were in a restaurant, could you ask for the beverage and would it be considered water? Or is it really some other kind of beverage.

Adding lemon slices or cucumber spears to a glass of water . . . that is definately allowed. But today there is a whole new class of beverages that are called waters – but seem to push the envelop on the Daniel Fast. Read the ingredients and then put the question before the Holy Spirit. He will give you the answer about the product you are considering.

      I hope this helps.

  28. Mia #

    Hi Susan,

I’m sure you must’ve gotten this question alot. But, why no corn chips. I’ve seen your response as no deep fried foods. So, I guess my real question is, why no deep fried foods if the ingredient are natural and the oil is vegetable oil?

    January 9, 2011
    • In Daniel 10:3 we learn this:

I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks.

Sweet and deep-fried foods are in the category of “pleasant and desireable.” Ask yourself the question, why do you want the deep fried corn chips?

      I hope this helps!

its so amazing to me that “people”, “books”, “situations”, “verses”, etc seem to come out of nowhere right when you seem to need them! Thank you Holy Spirit! in the past, i would have chaulked this up to coincidence but now i am accutely aware that my Father is watching out for me :) so, thanks to Him for sending me you and the Daniel Fast!
i am currently on the Daniel Fast and doing fine with the eating (or not eating part:)) but i am having an issue with “purpose of my fast”. i feel like i am all over the map in my needs and prayer life! so many issues that need addressing…. i feel like my main purpose has been to draw closer to Him, but, like i said, i find myself blabbing on and on over every issue that comes to mind!
do you have any reccomendations on how to focus? sometimes i feel slightly crazy and like i’m losing the essence of the fast itself…
thanks for your time, your energy and your devotion!
    Shanna

    January 9, 2011
    • Hi Shanna,

      You might try this:

      1. Write down every matter on your mind – get all the thoughts on paper
      2. Then review the list and put an “I” next to each one you can do nothing about, but instead you can be an Intercessor for the matter and pray to God about it.
      3. For the remaining items what can you complete quickly – where God has already given you the direction? For example, pay a bill, make a call, send a note, etc. Make a plan to complete these items soon. Get them off your list and out of your mind.
      4. Now, with the remaining items which are those that cause you the most anxiety and concern. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern what your purpose for this fast should be. Select one or two items to use as your focus for your fast – in prayer – in study – in meditation. Then gather the study tools you need (books, teaching CDs, etc) and the verses you need. Then make these items your focus.

In the process of all of this you will draw nearer to God as you put your faith and your trust in Him.

I hope this helps . . . please let us know!

I have been fasting since the start of the year; I have had such a great time eating soups, stir fry’s and experimenting with different foods. I sometimes eat rice and shine(only ingredient is brown rice, ground) which is like cream of wheat but usually add 1/2 tbs of organic butter to it, which is not allowed. I noticed in another blog someone uses earth balance as a margarine but not sure this or others are allowed.
Thanks so much for your incredible ministry!

Thank you for the wonderful work you are doin . I saw your blog in 2009 , tried to fast but it never worked the way i wanted i kept fallin off , eatin the wrong foods n the like , then in Feb 2010 i decided to try again , yes it was difficult i would fall get up dust myself start all over again then it was all smooth that it became part my life the whole of 2010. I am ready to do it again. My main worry is i have limited types of foods , here in France its hard to find some of those foods you talk about, today i have just learned that semolina is not allowed thats one down . I will do with what i can get even if it means eating the same thing for a week or so my needs are more important than my wants . Thank you once again

    Stay blessed

    • Hi Ellie,

Try to use the best and most natural foods that you can. I expect you can find whole grain pasta in France and of course other whole grains. Although the French do like those light and fluffy baked goods and those are generally made of refined flour.

Thanks for your story and I hope the best of your on your Daniel Fast.

I am curious if Natural vanilla flavoring is okay in foods like instant cream of wheat original, it doesn’t taste sweet at all (which by the way is really nasty, but I love the grits with soy milk in place of water). I’m having such an issue with some ingredients for some reason, what about calcium choloride? Thank you so much! Love the book and all the recipes, bought both online!

    January 8, 2011
    • Hi T,

Calcium cloride is a type of salt used as a firming agent in foods. It’s considered a tolerable ingredient for organic foods. I try to avoid it, but consider it allowed on the fast when necessary. The reason I say this is because it’s very hard to find some canned varieties of food without the addition. On the other hand, I buy a lot of Kroger brand canned products and they often only have the vegetable with water and salt.

      January 8, 2011
      • T #

Great thank you so much. That was sorta what I was thinking after I researched what exactly it was. I found the canned foods all to be different when I was looking at the ingredients while shopping, one brand might look like it’s just water and salt on one item but lots of extras on the next item, my grocery shopping took a lot longer last time. But I am really enjoying the fast!

        January 8, 2011
      • One of the surprising benefits of the Daniel Fast is that we all pay more attention to what we are eating . . . including reading the labels to learn what’s inside the package, can or bottle! This can be life tranforming as we develop habits of health!

        Be blessed on your fast.

I am not religious, but I do believe there is a higher power that created the universe (myself included). My life is a mess right now and I want to turn things around. I drink too much, I eat too much, and as a consequence I am not healthy physically and mentally. I purchased The Daniel Fast book after seeing a preacher on tv talking about it. I have decided that this is a great opportunity for me to join others in seeking a better life. I will buy a bible and read The Book of John and follow the fast as instructed. I hope a light comes on in my life. My soul feels black and rotten right now. Please pray for me. I will be here with you for the next 21 days.

    January 8, 2011
    • Hi Charles,

I’m not religious either . . . but I do know the living God and He knows me. I hope you sense even now that the living God is lovingly calling you to Him. He wants to lead uou and guide you to leave the unhealthy and hard things behind and move into an amazing life submitted to Him. This may sound like “religious talk” to you right now. There as a time in my life when I received it that way, too. But that was before I experience “that moment I first believed” when I was reading a Bibble – cramming to get ready for a debate that Jesus was just a good teacher and that God wasn’t real.

That was the before and as I was reading I realize that I was reading the truth! I hope you will have a similar experience. For me, that was more than 35 years ago. I have messed around with doubt in my early years, but now I have experienced the miracle-working power of God in my life that I am fully convinced.

Please stay in touch and I am so happy for our new discovery!

    Susan,
Is Sugar-free Syrup okay, it is sugar free?

    January 8, 2011
    • No sweeteners are allowed on the Daniel Fast. My guess is that this product also has artificial sweeteners and no chemicals are allowed on the fast . . . and if you are planning on using the syrup on pancakes or waffles, they include leavening and are not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

I encourage you to take some time to study this site and visit my website at http://www.daniel-fast.com to learn more.

Hi, I am on day 6 of the Daniel fast, and have been blessed so much. I have grown closer to God everyday, and feel GREAT. Day one was tough, because I went cold turkey on the coffee and sugar, but God led me through it.
I have a question about Salads. Up until now, I have eaten salads dry with no dressing, etc. That is tough to do. Is there a dressing or flavor option that is allowed on salads?
thanks so much for your comments and encouraging words. We are blessed.

    January 8, 2011
    • Hi Robbie,

You can have my favorite prepared dressing: Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing

You can also make your own and I have several recipes in the the books: http://www.daniel-fast.com/store.html

I’m not sure what the difference between pita bread and flat bread is. I buy a Whole Wheat, organic pita bread with the ingredients of organic Whole wheat flour, organic Wheat Flour, water, salt and yeast. Is it the yeast? Please let me know if it is okay to have with these ingredients. Thank you.

    January 8, 2011
    • No yeast on the Daniel Fast . . . so this would not be allowed. You can make your own flat bread or buy whole graint tortillas in the health food stores.

      Hi Tony,
If you consider these days as a preparation time for the Daniel Fast then you’re fine. The only drinking beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. Juice and plant-based milks (Soy, Almond, Rice etc.) can be used in recipes just not as a beverage. Unless, and here is one of those ‘grey’ areas, you are making a ‘Smoothie’ as a meal replacement. Also, you can find additional of information about the Daniel Fast on this blog and at our website: http://www.Daniel-Fast.com. These resources are available to assist you in a successsful Daniel Fast.

Is it ok to juice several fruits, add solid fruits, and then freeze them for a fruit pop?

Also, are almonds and chick peas allowed?

    January 8, 2011
    • Hi Patsie,

Almonds and chick peas (garbonzo beans) are allowed on the Daniel Fast. The frozen fruit pops are technically allowed, but push the envelope. I encourage you to pray about this verse:

I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks. Daniel 10:3

Then ask the Holy Spirit to guide your spirit to see if this would be a good choice during the fast.

      Be blessed!

I had a few questions. I know on the fast you can eat vegetables but what about the canned vegetables because they do have a few grams of sugar. Does that disqualify them? I also wanted to know if Boca or Morning Glory products qualify? Thanks

    January 7, 2011
    • Hi Lekesha,

You don’t want to choose canned vegetables in which sugar has been added as an INGREDIENTS. However, just about all food grown from seed has sugar in its nutritional analysis. This is different . . . it’s allowed. I use Kroger brand canned vegetables because most of their varieties have only the vegetable along with water and salt for the ingredients.

      Be blessed!

What about corn chips there is only corn, water and oil its not a partially hydrogenated oil

    January 7, 2011
    • Hi Tammi,

Deep fried foods are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. So if the chips are baked, they would be allowed. However, if they are deep fried they would not be allowed for the Daniel Fast.

    Susan,
I just got back from the grocery store and was surprised that nearly all the canned beans (pintos, garbonzo beans, nazy beans, etc.) —EXCEPT for black beans—– had calcium chloride and/or calcium disodium EDTA (promotes color retention). Are these ok to use as long as we rinse and drain them?? I could not find any diced tomatoes or canned tomatoes that did not have the calcium chloride added. I would normally use the juice also in a recipe for soup, etc., but I wasn’t sure about the calcium chloride…….THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!

    January 7, 2011
    • Calcium chloride is not desireable, but it is considered acceptable in the organic food industry. It’s used as a firming agent in some foods and beans is one of those.

I try to start with dried beans so I know for sure what is in the recipe I am making, plus it’s so much less expensive. I also buy organic canned beans for about 95 cent per can, but like I said the dried beans are much less expensive.

Don’t try to wash it off . . . it’s considered an organic chemical, just not the best.
