“Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12
“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” -——Daniel 10:2, 3
Welcome! The purpose of this site is to offer valuable and complete information about the Daniel Fast. As the Daniel Fast Blogger, my #1 goal is to help you have a successful fasting experience. More and more Christian men and women are choosing the Daniel Fast as their guideline to enter into the spiritual discipline. This blog is designed as a “gathering place” for information and resources about the Daniel Fast to serve those seeking God in this manner. Please “cruise” the blog. Remember, this is a blog format, so you will need to page down to see all the posts. Also, leave comments if you have ideas, questions, or comments.
Also, join our Facebook community! It’s a powerful way to stay connected to others who are seeking God through an extended period of prayer and fasting.

Hi again Susan,
Can I have Campbell’s Tomato Juice, using it as a base for soup? It’s ingredients are: TOMATO JUICE FROM CONCENTRATE (WATER, TOMATO CONCENTRATE), SALT, VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID).
Everything looks OK except for the “absorbic acid”, but, according to Wikipedia, it’s a :naturally occurring organic compound with antioxidant properties”. So it sounds OK, but I don’t believe you’ve got it on an approved list.
Thanks in advance for your help, Susan. May God continue to bless you and your ministry.
Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C that is used for a natural preservative, it’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. I hope this helps!
Question…Can Type 2 diabetics participate in the Daniel Fast? Thank you!!!
Hi Ritchie,
Yes, Type 2 diabetics can participate in the Daniel Fast. I encourage you to take a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines to your Health Care Provider and together make the required modifications if any to your fast (and then, if this modification includes some meat, then that’s fine).
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, men and women with insulin or Type 2 diabetes experience wonderful results on the Daniel Fast “IF” they are wise about the foods they eat. Whole grain cereals and leafy green vegetables are packed with protein yet very low on the glycemic index. The same is true of legumes. Many people with Type 2 diabetes are able to balance their blood sugar levels with the food they eat and can soon eliminate or drastically reduce the meds they take. The same is true with insulin-dependent diabetics – often able to greatly reduce the amount of insulin necessary to balance their BS levels.
You will want to make sure to eat foods that are “low on the glycemic index” and not sugary fruits. Of course you want to take the advice of your health professional, And access your own knowledge. But you can get plenty of protein in other ways than nuts and peanut butter. Again, Whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables are excellent sources of protein. Also, you will want to eat complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbohydrates. They are processed very differently in the body. You need to stay away from simple carbohydrates.
- Some examples of healthy foods containing “Complex Carbohydrates”:
Spinach, Whole Barley, Grapefruit, Turnip Greens, Buckwheat flour, Apples, Lettuce, Prunes, Water Cress, Oat bran flour, Apricots, Dried, Zucchini, Oatmeal, Pears, Asparagus, Oat bran cereal, Plums, Artichokes, Muesli, Strawberries, Okra, Wild rice, Oranges, Cabbage, Brown rice, Yams, Celery, Multi-grains, Carrots, Cucumbers, Pinto beans, Potatoes, Dill Pickles, low fat Soybeans, Radishes, Lentils, Broccoli, Navy beans, Garbanzo beans, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, Kidney beans, Eggplant, Soy milk, Lentils, Onions, Whole meal spelt flour, Split peas.
- Some examples of foods to Avoid containing “simple carbohydrates”: All of which are NOT allowed on the fast. (Simple carbohydrates are more refined, are usually found in foods with fewer nutrients, and tend to be less satisfying and more fattening): Table sugar, Corn syrup, Fruit juice, Candy, Cake, Bread made with white flour, Pasta made with white flour, Soda pop, such as Coke®, Pepsi®, Mountain Dew®, etc., Candy, All baked goods made with white flour, Most packaged cereals.
You can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!
What are some of the things that have protein in it that we can eat while on fast
Hi Janae,
Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables, to read more go to: http://vegetarian.about.com/od/healthnutrition/tp/protein.htm Be blessed!
Thanks for sharing your info. I truly appreciate your efforts and I will be waiting for your next post thank you once
again.
I am a little concerned about the chemicals that are in the foods and wanted to know if there is a list of additives to look out for.
There are too many to list here, but here is a great link as a start point for you http://altmedangel.com/additive.htm I hope this helps, Be blessed on your Journey!
Hi Susan,
Can I drink ”Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar” or use in my salad?
If the Ingredients in Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is free of sweeteners then it would be fine for on the fast.
I’m having a hard time finding whole grain pasta that is free of sugar. Every kind I come across has a few grams pers serving. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
Make sure you are reading the Ingredients list and not the Nutrition List.
There is an awesome organic brown rice pasta by Lundberg that works very well on the fast. The only ingredient is organic brown rice flour. Be blessed.
Is bottled flavored water acceptable? (Propel, Powerade – both have no sugar)
Flavored waters . . . that all depends. Adding slices of lemons or cucumbers along with mint leaves to water is acceptable as long as your water doesn’t cross over to tea . . . the main thing is that the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. So, if the flavored water you are talking about is still water and free of all sweeteners, chemicals or artificial ingredients, then you would probably be okay.
Hi, can you please tell me if you can eat avocado? Thank you.
Yes avocados are fine.
Hello my name is Nicole,
I am somewhat confused when reading labels. If there is no sugar in the ingredients but 1 gram of sugar is listed in the nutritional value for instance whole natural walnuts. How is that possible? Are we to pay attention to the nutritional facts or the inggredients? Also can you tell me if we can eat olives and what kind are acceptable?
Thank you and God Bless,
Nicole
Hi Nicole,
You need to be reading the INGREDIENTS LIST, this is where you see what has been added in to the product (if sugar is listed here then avoid it). The nutritional list gives you the nutritional break down of what is naturally derived from the food (so if sugar grams are listed only here, it’s ok). Olives are fine on the fast as long as there is no sweeteners or additives added in. Be blessed!
Good afternoon. What other types of rice (if any) are allowed? I know brown rice – but what about Basmanti or Jasmine?
Hi Lisa,
Various rice varieties have unprocessed, brown rice versions, including sweet rice, sticky rice, basmati rice and jasmine rice. Whole grain rice differentiates from white rice, because it undergoes minimal processing and retains its husk. Due to this difference, whole grain rice typically requires longer cooking times and will have a firmer texture. They also tend to be more aromatic, colorful, nutritious and flavorful. So all that to say, you can look for basmati and jasmine rice in brown rice version, and just watch what you put on top of it. I hope this helps!
Today is one week, and I have had a headache 3 out of the 7 days. This has been hard on me and I feel like I am running out of recipes options. I woke up with another headache today, and I feel very tired. Need some encouragement, please thank you!
Hi Valerie,
Drink Lots of Water! Your body is going through the detox process from caffeine, sugar and chemicals. These symptoms (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) will pass in a few days (3-7) or more. The more extreme the build up of the toxins in your body, the more extreme your symptoms and length of time to complete your detox. Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process, if unbearable, do take some medication to help ease the discomfort. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, exercise or Detox. So, drink lot’s of Water, water, water! For additional recipe ideas go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/recipes.html click on “Recipes”. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Fast!
Hi Valerie- I am just now preparing for my first daniel fast, but I have for many many years completed other fasts or cleansing rituals that lasted anywhere from 3 days to 40 days. For me, the discomfort comes around sporadically throughout the term depending on the duration. However, please be encouraged! I also know that the discomfort is the body’s way of ridding toxins- the more toxins the greater the discomfort. I don’t eat meat so my discomfort will be decreased during the daniel fast, but I drink strong black tea with cream and agave every morning- therein lies my discomfort. Drink lots of water, and try warm water with lemon to help flush out toxins more expediently. I will keep you in my prayers and please please be encouraged. Achieving a deeper relationship with God is worth a few headaches…. am I right?
Can we use Soy Sauce? If so, which Brand can we use?
Hi Brad,
Yes, soy sauce is allowed. I buy a “generic” brand, it’s free of sweeteners and chemicals, also sometimes I’ll use Braggs Liquid Aminos as an alternative. I hope this helps!
Hi, after the fast would it be healthy or acceptable for me to eat this way for ever?
Yes, the Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat. If you do so you may want to consider adding some occasional chicken, fish and dairy. If you don’t want to do this, then you will need to be aggressive in monitoring your protein and iron intake. Be blessed!
I am planning on beginning the Daniel Fast, I am wondering my daughter can do it as well. She is 11yrs old but I wasn’t sure if she would be okay as children need certain foods in their diets for protein and calcium etc…
Please advise.
Hi Chantelle,
You might want to do an altered Daniel Fast for a child this age. School meals alone can be tough on the Daniel Fast, But… she could give up sugar, chemical additives and sweet drinks. And then use the Daniel Fast for meals at home. This is a great opportunity to teach children about spiritual disciplines and fasting, however 11 is a little young. So an altered fast would be very appropriate. Of course, it needs to be her choice . . .Be Blessed!
Greetings!
I will start my fast tomorrow for the next 10 days, my question to you is, are eggs allowed in the fast? And also is brown rice ok?
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
The Daniel Fast is totally plant based, so no Eggs on the fast. Brown rice is a whole grain and perfect for the fast, just watch what you put on top. I hope this helps!
hey i was wondering are you aloud eggs
The Daniel Fast is totally plant based, so no Eggs on the fast. I hope this helps!
Hi
How about coconut yogurt? Can we have it?
Hi Marie,
The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based and since yogurt has dairy (and sweetener) in it, its not allowed on the Daniel Fast. But, you can have the coconut. Be Blessed on your Fast!
Hello Susan,
I did the fast for about 1 1/2 months. For the most part I felt great. I’ve always stuggled with food & over eating. The best part of the fast was that my cravings were gone and I felt free from the bondage of my flesh & food addiction.
I was real tired though without my caffeine in the morning, I ended up taking naps during the day to help with that. I did have some issues. I started feeling very gassy from the beans, I believe? Also my husband is a meat eater & it has been difficult cooking for my family. I alsoI started feeling light headed, often when I stood up from bending over. I thought maybe because I’m not getting enough protein? I’ve fallen off the wagon since my fast, but I look forward to starting again. Those are the main issues I struggled with. Cooking for my family, being uncomfortably gassy, light headed & tired, needing a nap. Can you please give me some advice. How will I find your reply? Will it come in my e-mail or do I need keep checking the blog section for my answer?
Thank you for your obedience to God for your ministry and for sharing the gospel boldly in your book, The Daniel Fast.
Sincerely,
Laura Hadley
Hi Laura,
*Family Meal time while on the fast: Two ideas for you. The first is to plan out your meals Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and have as much pre made in advance as possible (focus on what you can have and not what you can’t). Then when you prepare meals for your family you have your own food right there. For instance, you can have regular tacos for your family and a bean/rice burrito for you, a side dish and a salad for all. OR…make meals like spaghetti with meat withheld from a portion of the sauce (w/whole grain noodles for all) with a salad, and again focus on what You Can have. I have found that when I focus on what I can have while being around the normal foods, the temptation is not as strong.
*Protein Rich Foods are in abundance on the Daniel Fast , however you do need to pay close attention to be certain you are getting your body’s required amount. Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables.
*For excessive gas: Again, Increase your water intake and eat whole grains, banana, and cantaloupe to help counter the symptoms of excessive gas.
*Feeling light headed and fatigued: These symptoms (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) will pass in a few days (3-7) or more. The more extreme the buildup of the toxins in your body, the more extreme your symptoms and length of time it will take to complete your detox. Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process, if unbearable, do take some medication to help ease the discomfort…. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, exercise or Detox. I hope this helps, Be blessed!
In preparing for the fast I’ve learned that weight loss is very common. I have an active lifestyle and am quite slim and really can’t afford to lose any weight. How can I maintain my weight while on the fast?
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, so you can continue your work out regime as normal, just make sure you are up on your protein and water intake. Yes, it is normal for people to lose a few pounds while on the fast, but not do to a lack of food, as we advise 3 moderate meals with 2 small snacks per day. Weight loss on the fast is directly connected to the removal of sugar, sweeteners, white flour and basically “simple carbohydrates”. As you know, maintaining healthy body weight is a combination of Caloric intake (eating three moderate meals with two snacks per day) and Exercise. You will want to pay specific attention to your protein intake, and you can get plenty of protein in Nuts and Peanut butter, Whole grains, Legumes (beans) and Leafy Green Vegetables. And, remember to Drink Lots of Water! As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, i.e.: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Fast!
Most of the young people in our church have vowed as Nazarites, since we have felt an urge for revival in our country but we are using the Daniel fast. Is it okay?
Hi Chris,
Absolutely! I think The Daniel Fast would be a wonderful complement to your time of consecration. Be Blessed on your Journey!
hello, i’m a althetc person who runs three times a week, is there any modifications that i can do?
Hi Maurice,
Yes, it is safe to stay physically active while on the fast. However, you will need to be intentional with your protein intake. You can get plenty of protein in nuts, peanut butter (any nut butter), whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables,. You can also add in unsweetened soy (or any plant based) protein powder into blended fruit/vegetable ‘smoothies’ (make sure all other ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast and watch out for milk products/whey and sweeteners along with chemical additives). Then there is also, sweetener and chemical free, plant based supplements that are an option to consider. And finally..…depending on how rigorous your exercise is and how well you are doing with your nutritional intake, you may need to take further action and consider modifying the fast to match your routine by adding in some occasional fish and chicken. Be Blessed on your Fast!
I am on day 4 of my fast and I think today is the hardest, because all I can think about is food. I am even thinking about compromising, but I have to think that God has never gave up on me and never compromised with me. The daily devotionals are really helpful, but is there any online support groups? Thanks!
HI Susan,
Can you let me know about two types of vinegar, please?
1. I’ve got “Gourmet Red Wine Vinegar” – Premium Quality made by Pompeian. Ingredients: “Red Wine Vinegar reduced with water to 5% acidity, AND it contains “naturally occurring sulfites”.
2. I’ve also bought “Napa Valley Naturals Black Cherry Balsamic Vinegar”. Ingredient: Aged Balsamic Vinegar, Natural Black Cherry Flavor. Contains Sulfites”.
3. White wine vinegar?
Thanks again for all of your help,Susan.
Yes, you can use Red/white Wine vingars and Balsamic vinegars on the Daniel Fast. Be sure to read the label for ingredients. Everything on the Daniel Fast should be free of chemicals and/or sweeteners. Sulfites: Naturally occurring sulfites are a byproduct of the fermentation process from fruit (when used to make wine for example). There are manmade sulfites that you will want to avoid, but the naturally occurings sulfites are fine. Be Blessed!
God bless you Susan. God has blessed me with you – an Incredible Woman of God. I have learned so much about praying, mediatating with God and the fasting concept. In the beginning my goal was to fast for 21 days. However, I went to God in prayer and asked for further directions and the spirit of God that lives within me approved “50 days” of fasting. “HALLELUJAH” I will continue with my “spiritual fast”. However, per the instructtions of my physician I’m adding fish to my fast on Monday, 6/4/12.
Susan, please continue to send me your Daily Devotions – please continue to share with me the lessons and words of God that God is using you for. Everyday your devotions are (I feel) only for me
.
I’ve always been a believer and a faith walking woman – but PRAISE GOD my faith, trust and belief is growing stronger every second of the day. I know how much God loves me and I have surrender my entire life to God without hesitation or fear. I’ve discovered that in the past I was trusting God – but not 100% plus as I trust Him now. I claim with authority “I am whole, I am blessed, I am filled with the spirit of The Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost. I am annointed and blessed, I am an INCREDIBLE WOMAN OF GOD!!!!”
I look forward to continuing with our spiritual relationship (yours and other believers) that God has blessed us with.

I have a real aversion (get sick, throw up, etc.) to onions, mayonnaise, garlic – I need to find something to eat which does not contain these. I’ve bought all the recipe books but most things have something I don’t eat. I am used to southern cooking – fried chicken, sweet potato pie, etc. I know I need to break this and I’m willing but the foods are not what I am accustomed to or like. Suggestions?
Hi Jeandonnell,
You will need to find the foods that you can at least tolerate, and then add in the seasonings/spices that you like to give it a familiar taste. Part of breaking old bad eating habits is: #1 finding a healthy replacement, and #2 not revisiting those old foods. Remember those bad foods will always Taste good, that’s not the problem. They are not good for you, and just as you Learned to like those unhealthy foods, you can learn to like new and healthy foods. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
Instead of 21 days, I want it for 30 days,,is it fine?
Yes, you can extend your fast as the Holy Spirit leads you. Be Blessed on your Journey!
Hello my name is emma. Im starting the daniel fast tomorow. I have to quick questions will the daniel fast help with low iron level and . Im a vegeterian so mainly fruits and vegetables. But for an average of lets say 22-to 30 days you only eat fruits and vegetables. Or is ther more to it. Please leave a reply.
Hi Emma,
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat and includes a great variety of foods. Here is a general list of allowed foods: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All Nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: Water only – spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices.
Concerning your Iron concerns, here is a overview of iron requirements which vary based on gender, age, the body’s ability to absorb iron and the amount of iron the body has stored in its reserve.
Infants from 7 to 12 months of age require 11 mg daily.
Children ages 1 to 3 require 7 mg daily, while children 4 to 8 years of age need 10 mg daily.
Boys and girls ages 9 to 13 need 8 mg daily. Between 14 and 18 years of age, girls require 15 mg daily, due to menstruation, compared to boys who only need 11 mg daily.
Women of childbearing age have higher iron needs then men and require 18 mg daily, while men of the same age require 8 mg daily.
Both men and women over 50 years of age require 8 mg daily.
Iron found in nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables are in a non-heme form and can be less easily recognized and absorbed by the body. Food that contains over 5 mg of iron per serving is considered a good source of iron.
Plant-based foods high in iron include beans such as soybeans, white beans and lentils, dried fruit, whole grains, dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale and collard greens, and iron fortified dried cereals and oatmeal.
For a complete Daniel Fast food list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Journey!
Hello Team,
I just want to find out if soup is allowed during this diet…I’m on day 8 of the fast…Although on 2 occassions (2 meals) i did a partial fast; i still feel great nonetheless…
May God Bless you.
thanks, Tshego.
Hi Tshego,
Eating plant based DF friendly soups on the fast is great! In fact we have many soup recipes available, for a sample just go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/recipes.html click on “Recipes”, then under “Daniel Fast Recipes” click on “Soups and Stews”. Be Blessed!
I am trying to figure out some new things to eat on the fast and I was wondering if I could have Tortilla chips the ingredients are select corn cooked in vegetable oils. Thank you for all the informatoin on your blog it is very helpful.
Hi Keetra,
The Ingredients so far sound finee (as long as there is no sweeteners and additives) just make sure that they are baked and not deep fried. Be Blessed!
Today is my last day on the Daniel Fast (along with my husband) and it has been the greatest eye-opener ever.. both spiritually and physically. I wanted guidance & spiritual insight from God about my current life trials and also my eating lifestyle. Prior to this fast (my first one ever in my walk with God) I was not able to digest foods well & although I made changes last year on my own, I knew I needed God’s intervention to take it all the way. During this fast, I rediscovered my love for cooking… cooking the foods God intended for us to eat to be well! There are infinite dishes & meals to be made with plant-based foods & it’s been an amazing journey during these past 3 weeks… so amazing that God has placed it in my heart to make it a permanent lifestyle. My hubby was a big meat eater, loved beef n chicken, and the changes in him have been jawdropping in terms of how he views food & life through God’s eyes now. During this fasting time, we encountered some challenges & curve balls in our world week to week, and I started to get really discouraged. But then we viewed it as a test and became even more determined to make it through with this fast because God’s will is greater than ANY problem, addiction or challenge. God is amazing & we are speechless! So to those who aren’t sure about whether to jump in, pray for strength, direction and jump in because God will be holding your hand all the way & your entire outlook on life will change.. all I can say is WOW & AMEN!
Praise God, and Thank you for sharing this wonderful praise report with us! God is Good!
Is there a site on the web where you can go to get encouragement to stay on your 21 day fast?
Hi Obedi,
Yes, you can receive daily encouragement delivered directly to your inbox. Sign up for the 21 day daily devotional by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com/fast/devotional.php it will take you directly to a sign up page. Be Blessed on your Fast!
Hi, I was wondering if we can drink unsweetened almond milk (also very little sugar) instead of soy? I try to avoid soy if possible
Thanks!
Hi Sarah,
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. But yes, you can use any plant based milk that is unsweetened and additive free (almond, rice, soy, coconut, etc.) during your fast with recipes and on cereal. Be Blessed on your Fast!
Ok great, thank you! Also, if we can eat unlimited fruits, veggies, raw seeds, and nuts, then why are there measurements/portions provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Hi Sarah,
Keep in mind that this is a fast and portion control and the eating sensibly is appropriate. So eating three moderate meals and two snacks a day would be appropriate. Portion size or serving size information is provided for the purpose of the nutritional value that you are to be looking for. I hope this helps!
I have looked and looked for the answer to this question but the only thing I have found is that you can’t have citric acid since it is a preservative. I still need some help with the potato starch and corn bran??? Could someone please shed some light on this issue for me?
Thank you!
Hi Elayna,
Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C that is used for a natural preservative, it’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. From what I can tell, the potato starch is fine . . . its use is more as a binding agent and is not a leavening agent. Corn bran is a whole grain and as long as there are no additives or sweeteners added it too is fine. Be Blessed!
Hi Susan, I am on day 39. Your words of wisdom and perspective helped me through the first half of my fast. Thank you!!
Thank you SO much for the reply on my other question. I just have one more (for now – lol). With Memorial Day coming up and it being a normal day for families/friends to gather and grill out, do you offer any suggestions that those on the fast might be able to follow? I don’t want the focus to be on food, but I am a little concerned. We have several issues with that this weekend because I have 3 kids having birthday parties this weekend (different days/times) and add in the holiday. Many prayers will be sent up for staying on track.
Hi Carla,
When you fast, you may occasionally find yourself facing delicate social or family/friends dilemmas. The key here is to check your heart and make sure the reason you push the “pause button” is coming from your spirit and you are not just giving in to a craving for a self-motivated reason. I have found that in most cases I can avoid these situations. And over all my years of fasting, it’s the rare occasion when I have paused my fast. With that said, don’t beat yourself up if you defer due to love, respect, or some other act of kindness or when unexpected situations arise. So do your best to plan your fast around what events that you can, and when the unexpected comes up be quick to ask the Holy Spirit for His direction. Since it sounds like these family gatherings will be spread out over several days, ask the Holy Spirit for a game plan in advance of what these days of fasting/partial fasting/or partial-partial fasting should look like for you. He is faithful and He Will lead you! Be Blessed on your Fast!
When I was on the fast we had several family functions that came up so what I did was took my own food. And of course everyone ate what I brought. for example, we went to a fish fry. Their menu was spaghetti, slaw, fish and other things of course. So I made my own vegetarian spaghetti made with whole wheat pasta and home made sauce, I made cole slaw with mustard, apple cider vinegar and some other spices, and I made sautee’d spinach made with fresh spinach, garlic, olive oil and spices. The good thing about it is, now I’m adapting that as a way of life, I just take what I can eat with me. I also took my own home made corn tortillas and salsa for snacking. Just make sure you make enough for everyone because I thought when I told them it was whole wheat pasta with no meat I would have plenty left, but I didn’t….
Thank you for sharing your story. My daughter told me about this program that she is using for a diet. That is what the appeal was for me at first. Then I listened to your story. I am struggling financially and will apply these principcles to my situation. Your willingness to share gives me hope.
I bought Soy milk assuming they were all the same. I used it in a smoothie for breakfast yesterday then realized it says 8 grams of sugar on the nutitional chart. I looked at the store last night and my store doesn’t offer unsweetened soy milk. All the other alternatives also had sugar on the chart – almond milk, etc. The ingredients list it as dehydrated cane root, I believe (I don’t have it right in front of me). Is this against the fast if I use this?
Hi Carla,
Make sure you are reading the Ingredients list (where no sweeteners should be listed) and not the Nutritional list (if sugar grams are listed here only, then it’s derived from the food and ok). Not all soy milks have cane juice in them. Keep looking as there are many options available now days, so search out any plant based milks that are free of sweeteners and additives (almond, rice, soy, coconut, etc). Some stores will have a supply in the refrigerated section and more varieties on the cereal isle (Safeway). Here’s a plant based milk (Soy) that I like…WestSoy “Organic Unsweetened Original” Ingredients: Filtered water, whole organic soybeans. And, WestSoy “Unsweetened Vanilla” Ingredients: Organic soymilk (filtered water, whole organic soybeans) natural vanilla flavor with other natural flavors. Here’s the link: http://www.westsoy.biz/products/product/unsweet/1118.php I hope this helps!
Can you have the Ezekiel cereal on the fast?
Hi Jana,
Yes, Ezekiel Cereal is great, and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: http://www.arrowheadmills.com/product/shredded-wheat-cereal There are also several others found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores (just need to read some Ingredients labels), and then there is always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal, another favorite is Muesli. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
Can you have tortilla chips on the fast? They have select corn cooked in pue vegetable oils. Thank you for all the information it is very helpful.
“Baked” (Not deep fried) corn tortilla chips and baked whole grain tortilla chips are allowed, but you will need to read the list of ingredients to make sure they don’t include chemical additives or sweeteners. I hope this helps

Is it ok to take communion during the fast. My church uses fresh baked bread and wine? Will I need to begin again if I’ve taken part in this?
Hi Sherry,
Yes, always take every opportunity to take communion! Even better while Fasting! Coming together in remembrance of our Lord and the price He paid to redeem us is the very reason we fast, to be surrendered to Him and to know Him more fully! Be Blessed on your Fast!
what type of fruit jelly do you recommend or is it one for the DANIEL fAST
Hi Patricia,
Regarding Fruit Jelly – There are some jams and jellies out there that have only fruit as the ingtredients, and at first it sounds good. But ….it’s one of those foods that’s in the gray area and I always suggest for people pray about it and see how they are directed by the Lord. The fast restricts “delicate foods” and “sweeteners” but allows all fruit whether fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned . . . so again, I just suggest praying about it and see if you get a “check” on it. Be Blessed on your fast!
Hi! My husband and I are planning to do the Daniel fast and we have a 6 and a half month old baby and I’m still nursing. He eats solid food but only couple times a day. Do you have suggestions as far as getting protein for my meal. We’re really excited not just physically but spiritually most of all. God is really good!
This site by the way is really a big help! Lord’s Blessings!
Hi Michelle,
We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and/or the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however since your body has extra demands on it right now you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways.
Pay close attention to get plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!
I would like to know if organic Nutritional yeast (deactivated yeast) is allowed. It has no leavening power and is used to add a nutty buttery flavor to foods.
Because Nutritional Yeast is deactivated and no longer a leavening product it is allowed on the fast. Be Blessed!
Good Afternoon,
Last year in Feb. 2011, I did the Daniel’s Fast. And God definitely changed a lot of things in my life. I quit smoking and that was definitely a blessing! I can’t even stand the smell of it anymore. I am about to do another fast for 21 days.
This is response to Marilyn,
It was very encouraging to see your comments on your journey. I too fasted for a prolongued period of time, and one of the things I was praying and fasting for was my marriage! so I can relate completely. God is working in his heart, while healing mine. God is so good and HIs will so just. He will walk through this storm with you!!
Elizabeth
I found a protein powder where the only ingredient is “enzymatically processed rice protein from certified organic whole grain sprouted brown rice”. This sounds like a good one for the Daniel Fast – do you agree? Thanks!
Hi Kristina,
Yes, I agree. Although a mouthful, “Enzymatically processed rice protein from certified organic whole grain sprouted brown rice” is a good one. Be blessed!
Kristina,
Can I ask the name and place where you found the rice protein?
Thank you and be blessed!
Susan, what about probiotics present in protein powder? These seems like helpful bacteria or algae products. Is this allowable on the Daniel Fast? Thanks, Kristina
Hi Kristina,
Yes, probiotics that’s present in plant based prtotein powders is fine on the fast. Be Blessed!
I have a recipce that may be daniel fast friendly. Who can I email the recipe to?
customerservice@daniel-fast.com
This is some good information. I am going to take full advantage of this fast.
Good morning. I wondered – I had read in an earlier post that Triscuit crackers were ok on the Daniel Fast. What about the Triscuit Roasted Garlic?
Hi Lisa,
You’ll want to read the Ingredients list to see how they compare to the guidelines (or even compare them to the Triscuit Originals which are the ones I know to be Daniel Fast friendly). I hope this helps!
Good afternoon,
I make smoothies from fresh strawberries, bananas, nectarines and 1/2 cup unsweeten almomd soy milk. Do I take this in as my 1 snack for the day?
Kathy
Hi Kathy,
This is a bit large for a snack (with the exception of: a plant based protein powder, strenuous workout regime protein drink booster). Smoothies are considered a liquid meal, so this would be considered a breakfast or lunch meal replacement (also, you may want to consider adding 1/2 c. oats, 1/4 c. nuts, some spinach and/or kale to beef up the protein and level out the sugars). I hope this helps!
