Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” -——Daniel 10:2, 3

  1. Can I used thai chili sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce & tomato ketchup? thank you.

    July 31, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Read the Ingredients list on the chili sauce, soy sauce and ketchup to be sure that they are free of sweeteners and additives, if Daniel fast friendly then they’re fine. However… since the Oyster sauce is not plant based, it would not be allowed. I hope this helps!

    Hi Susan,
I have fasted several times in the past and haven’t given any thought to preparations prior to a fast. I don’t want to delay my fasting by waiting 7-10 days to detoxify prior to. I have experienced the headaches you mention, but I persevered. I want to start my 21 day fast tomorrow, what’s your opinion on that?

    July 29, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Patricia,
The advise to have a weaning off period from caffeine, sugar, additives and such is simply to avoid the discomfort of detox symptoms. If your symptoms are tolerable, and/or you are able to push through, then by all means go for it. This is just one of those personal decisions that there is no right or wrong here it is solely up to your comfort level. Be Blessed!

      Hi Venita,
As I recall, Morning Star includes sweeteners in their veggie burgers making them NOT okay for the Daniel Fast (double check the Ingrefients list though). That’s why I included recipes for veggie burgers in the Daniel Fast book and the Daniel Fast Cookbook Version II. Be Blessed!

Is Jasmine rice ok or is that not allowed? I’m just wondering because I have a few recipes that call for jasmine rice.

    July 28, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Various rice varieties have unprocessed, brown rice versions, including sweet rice, sticky rice, basmati rice and jasmine rice. Whole grain rice differentiates from white rice, because it undergoes minimal processing and retains its husk. Due to this difference, whole grain rice typically requires longer cooking times and will have a firmer texture. They also tend to be more aromatic, colorful, nutritious and flavorful. So all that to say, you can look for basmati and jasmine rice in brown rice version, and just watch what you put on top of it. I hope this helps!

      Hi Jamie,
Yes, Fasting is a very personal time between you and the Lord. However, we do need to be wise so that we do not look too secretive, like we are partaking in some big “mysterious/spiritual” exercise. This is a time that you Need to be led by the Holy Spirit as to when and how to answer with a down to earth and practical ease those questions of why you are not eating or not eating certain foods. If asked, just simply tell them you are doing a natural cleanse with whole foods and leave it at that, if they ask for more details share the natural side and benefits of the Daniel Fast. And then if they’re interested in more details and/or when the Holy Spirit leads add to that information the spiritual side of your fast. Keep in mind that although fasting is a very intimate time seeking God, it can also be a time of great inspiration and encouragement to others, so don’t be so feel you need to be so secretive that you miss out on any opportunity that the Holy Spirit is wanting to work in and through you! Be Blessed on your Journey!

What is the best way to come off the fast once completed? Any guidelines?

    July 26, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Hi Nikki, Great question! I do want to caution everyone about ending the fast.
You will need to be careful during the first couple days of “ordinary eating.” To keep your body from rebelling loudly, reintroduce foods slowly. This is especially important when resuming coffee and caffeine, meat, dairy products and sweets. Small portions are better and easing back into consumption of these foods is advised. Also, when you end your fast, reflect on the lessons you learned during your fasting period. I know many have learned valuable lessons about healthy eating and want to carry those lessons into their future. Perhaps you have gained new and positive habits for prayer and daily Bible reading. Don’t leave these gems behind until you fast again. Instead, carry them with you and allow them to affect your everyday life. Be Blessed on your Journey!

I have heard drinking water with chlorine in it is not as good as bottled water, any comment?

    July 26, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Paulette,
Correct…but then bottled waters can have additives in it too. Water filters are the best way to insure that your drinking water is as pure as possible. Using activated carbon and other technologies, filters filter out impurities such as chlorine, lead, copper, mercury, giardia, and much more. However, fluoride is a negatively charged ion and is not removed with filtering systems. Since people are increasing their water consumption, it’s best to drink filtered water that “takes out All the bad stuff.” I hope this helps!

Filtered water (is the best), but then spring water, distilled water and other pure waters are preferred. However, tap water is fine when that is all you have available. I hope this helps!

Can u eat Campbell’s Vegatable soup out the can???

    July 25, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Nat,
Soups are great! You can find prepared soups in the natural foods section of your grocery store, just make sure they are free of sweeteners, chemicals, dairy and other food ingredients not allowed on the Daniel Fast. I think Campbell’s has chemicals in it, so again, READ THE LABEL…Homemade soups are the very best way to go, since you control what goes into it and the large amount made provides many meals, some can even be stored for later in the freezer. Be Blessed!

Are any of the Garden Burgers acceptable?

    July 25, 2012

      Hi Esther,
Yes, you can eat veggie meat/burgers, however it’s hard to find prepared veggie burgers without yeast, sweeteners and/or egg whites, etc. included in the ingredients. So check the Ingredients list to see what’s in them. Many of those on the Daniel Fast make their own veggie burgers. You can find recipes in the Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version II. I am really interest in learning about Daniel Fast and just as excited to start. I do have a couple questions to ask:
    1. Can I eat popcorn…the type you popcorn the stove maybe using a little extra virgin olive oil?
    2. Can I eat dried fruit such as pineapple, bananas and apples?
    3. Can I eat cooked food such as vegetable soups make from fresh ingredients or just eat all fresh fruits and veggies?
    4. Can I take multivitamin or prenatal vitamin?

    July 20, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Sonja,
Here you go: 1. Can I eat popcorn? – Yes, old fashioned popcorn is fine, a pan (with a lid of course) with a little oil in it and pop it the old fashioned way, or better yet an air popper. Just watch what you put on top (no butter) sprinkle a little salt, cayenne pepper etc. on top and enjoy!
      2. Can I eat dried fruit such as pineapple, bananas and apples? – Yes, you can have dried fruit on the Daniel Fast. You just need to check the label of the package to find out the ingredients (not the nutritional value). Many manufactureres add sugar or other types of sweeteners and/or chemicals. So you will need to pass on those (like cranberries). Raisins and dates are great.
      3. Can I eat cooked food such as vegetable soups make from fresh ingredients or just eat all fresh fruits and veggies? – Yes, eating plant based DF friendly soups on the fast is great! In fact we have many soup and stew recipes available, for a sample just go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/recipes.html click on “Recipes”, then under “Daniel Fast Recipes” click on “Soups and Stews”.
      4. Can I take multivitamin or prenatal vitamin? – Yes, you can take daily supplements and/or prenatal supplements, although we encourage you when possible to find supplements that are free of sweeteners or man-made chemical. Be Blessed on your Fast!

I have a question and hope you can help me. I am thinking about starting the Daniel Fast but I’m not sure what my focus should be. I know you recommend seeking the Lord, and yes I am doing that, but after watching your short video on preparing for your fast I’m more confused. I need God’s guidence for everything you talked about in that video. I need healing from an addiction to tobbaco, I want to grow closer to the Lord, I need His direction for what I should do with my life, and I need His help with my finances. Do I focus on just one thing at a time? Or do I incorporate everything I need into one fast? I hope you can give me some direction on what I should focus on. Thank you.

    July 20, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Tracy,
I encourage you to first of all focus on the core issue in your life….Your relationship with God! Go after Him, seek Him with All your heart..Love Him… Deuteronomy 6:5 “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might.” Once, your spiritual life is set in order, you will begin to have clarity in how to prioritize and bring order to All areas of your life. Remember, all He says to do…obey quickly. He is faitheful, and the Lord Loves when his people seek Him for His ways! Be Blessed dear one in your Journey!

I’m on Day 4! Susan, thanks for this great website, your great book and all the good resources here. It’s actually a fun challenge figuring out what to eat! 19. Do you have a suggestion for a “breath mint”? For example – I would just love to have a mint freshener after eating a hefty garden salad that included onions!!!

    July 19, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Lisa,
I have yet to find a gum or breath mints that don’t have sweeteners or chemicals in their ingredients, neither of which are allowed on the Daniel Fast. Water will help keep your system flushed, and of course if possilbe carry a toothbrush with you. Lemon in your drinking water also helps to freshen your breath. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as hot weather, cold weather, exercise or Detox. Also, you may want to consider passing on the onion on the Lunch time salad : )
      I hope this helps!

Another alternative is sucking on a mint leaf. We used to have a plant out front growing up and my dad and I would always end up sucking on them after dinner (if you get them from a store make sure to wash them off).

What cereals can I eat whilst I m on the daniel fast

    July 18, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Old fashioned oatmeal is great for the fast, and you can pile on top fruit (bananas, raisins, craisins, fresh/frozen berries, canned peaches (watch for added sweeteners and additives) and nuts to add plenty of flavor and additional fiber and protein, and if desired some unsweetened additive free plant based milk (soy, almond, rice, coconut, etc.) Muesli is another good option. For prepared cereals are the Ezekiel brands and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: http://www.arrowheadmills.com/product/shredded-wheat-cereal There are several others found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores, but you’ll need to read the labels first. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

I started the Daniel’s Fast with real excitement and anticipation about what God is going to do, and how he will reveal Himself to my husband and me. I admit it was a quick decision that we begin this fast. But we were in agreemment and wanted to get started. So, what I did not do, however, is prepare my body by weaning myself of coffee the week before. Big mistake. This afternoon I became so unstable at work I felt like I was going to fall apart. I was extremely nauseaus, and had a massive headache to the point I could not think. I didn’t realize I was so addicted to caffeine. It was debilitating. I have a lot going on at work and need to be able to lead my staff. I caved tonight and had a half cup of coffee with cream. I could not functio.

I feel like I failed God. Could I not wait with him one hour? But on the other hand, if I want to be successful at this, I think need to take a step back and prepare myself further. I don’t want to stop the fast – I’d like to maintain all aspects of the fast but add coffee and cream, and wean myself off at the same time over the next week. Hopefully, I’ll be able to be coffee-free someday soon.

I don’t want to be disobedient to His call. But I also have to function. I’m not sure what to do…

Thanks for any advice you can offer! Blessings to you.

      Hi Linda,
Don’t be so hard on yourself, rather look at this as a huge learning curve and prep time. Your heart for God and wanting to comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines is clear. But you are fine and I hope you can move on and just continue on with the fast as planned. Maybe lengthening your fasting time to compensate for your caffeine weaning period (just a thought). Thanks for your question, I know others find themselves struggling with this very thing, going off the fast and needing to repent (make adjustments) and get back on track . . . just like we do in life!

Im actually doing a 3 day daniel fast, doet it have the same benefits as the 21 day fast?

    July 13, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Sindy,
The Daniel Fast is traditionally done for 21 days, some have gone for a longer length of time (up to 50 days), and some for shorter (7 days). The longer the fast more opportunity you have for additional break through. However, starting with a 3 day fast absolutely has great benefits, this is up to your schedule… And the leading of the Holy Spirit, so ask Him for His direction for you during this fast – Proverbs 3:6 He is so very Faithful, and He Will Direct You! Be Blessed on your Fast!

      July 25, 2012
      • Sindy #

During my fast I find that I am always highly distracted by fellow employees family & wifely duties. I plan to gradually increase the length of my fast leading up to the 21 day Daniel fast and I don’t want the focus to be on “what can or can I not eat”. I want my focus to be totally on God not even my prayer request but for 21 days of seeking God.
How can I tune out the daily demands of life while on my 21 day fast?

        July 25, 2012
      • Daniel Fast Team #

        Hi Sindy,
Aside from sequestering yourself off to a remote location away from the world and all life obligations (that would be a dream come true), but then, that would just be too easy. The reality though, is that to tune out the daily demands just isn’t possible or even a practical expectation. In fact, they seem to increase and get louder when fasting. However, the key here is look to Jesus as our example. What did he do when the heat got turned up in his time of ministry? He Increased his time alone with the Father, he was found slipping away to alone time in the dark early morning hours (before the day started) and in the night hours (after his day was ended). So I encourage you to Increase your time in the word and time in prayer and His presence. Practical planning: If you’re starting the Daniel Fast, spend one or two days a week (maybe about an hour) planning and preparing your meals and then storing them in the fridge or freezer, that way you don’t have to think about them the rest of the week (If this doesn’t work for you, then you may want to do a water only fast). Whatever direction you feel the Holy Spirit leading you in the bottom line will still be your time alone with Him..INCREASE IT and watch how He meets you! Be Blessed on your Fast!

Thank you for your inspiring words and ministry. I am experiencing muscle tiredness, mostly in my quadriceps, similar to being at a high altitude. What do your recommend I do to minimize this feeling?

    Thank you for your help.

      Hi Mary,
Drink Lots of Water! Your body is going through the detox process from caffeine, sugar and chemicals. These symptoms (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) will pass in a few days (3-7) or more. The more extreme the build up of the toxins in your body, the more extreme your symptoms and length of time to complete your detox. Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process, if unbearable, do take some medication to help ease the discomfort…. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, exercise or Detox. Be Blessed in your Fast!

Thanks, Susan. I am on day 19 and the muscle soreness is better. I must have been full of toxins! I like your story in your book about times when it is okay to make a deviation- I had one situation like you mentioned and ate a small bit.

i don’t understand about the bread. Can you buy bread from the store.

    July 6, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Ellen,
Bread is not allowed on the fast mainly due to the leavening in it. However, whole grain flat breads and tortillas (additive free, yeast and sweetener free) are allowed as an alternative. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

Can we you use yellow corn meal to make hot water cornbread? it has no sugar or leaven in it

        August 16, 2012
      • Daniel Fast Team #

Yes, yellow cornmeal is fine. I think Hot Water Cornbread is a “southern thing.” So being from the Pacific Northwest, I’m not real familiar with it. However, if you leave out the leavening and sugar then it would be allowed on the Daniel Fast. Be blessed.

    Hi,

I want to ask can i eat potatoes soup with carrots?

Is there a specific time i should eat or i can eat and drink anytime or i am not allowed to eat the whole day until 6pm?

    Thank you

    July 5, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Takunda,
The Daniel Fast doesn’t have any specific times to eat or not eat, however some people add this element to their fast. For those that do this, the most common is to eat only after sunset and before dawn. I hope this helps!

It’s all about the ingredients and what’s in them. The ingredients should be very simple, such as: a Whole grain flour, oil, salt and water, and baked or dry pan fried (no deep fry). I hope this helps!

    Good Morning Susan,

I must say that I find your web site to be vey resourceful regarding the subjecct at hand.

When I fast whether it be one, three or seven days I usually do it between the hours of 6am to12pm, 6am to 3pm or 6am to 6pm. Now for the Daniel Fast is there a recommended time frame such as 6-12, 6-3 or 6-6? Is there a specified period of time there should be no intake of food items?

    Please advise

    Thank You In Advance

    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Rose,
There is no specific time of day to eat or not eat for the Daniel Fast. Some people add this element to their fast, eating only after sunset and before dawn but is is not a requirement for the Daniel Fast. The Daniel Fast is 24/7 for 21 days, unless modified. However, eating “normal foods” after hours would not be allowed. I hope this helps!

    Susan,

I have just completed my 21-day Daniel fast. God has blessed me both spiritually and physically from doing this. There were many attempts I’ve made and failed in the past but this one worked for me. Thank God for your ministry and also for the daily devotionals. I didn’t miss reading any of them, they were so inspirational to me and kept me going. May God bless you abundantly for your work with this program.

      Hi Erica,
I am excited for you and the great future God has for you! You are going in the right direction, you are longing to be free of the wounds, anger and the weight of all the abuse endured…Be encouraged Jesus has already paid the price to guarantee your complete and total healing and restoration over All the past, Isaiah 61:1-3 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
And the key to walking this out: Isaiah 43:18-19 ~ “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.
His great promise to you: Isaiah 61:7 ~ Instead of your shame you shall have double honor, And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; Everlasting joy shall be theirs. Be Blessed in your Journey dear one!

      Hi Jeannie,
Leavening, including yeast, is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. Also, there are not sweeteners on the Daniel Fast. So typical Ezekiel bread is not allowed, however the Ezekiel Whole Grain Tortillas are allowed. Be Blessed!

to prepare for a daniel fast..How many days should one go without caffine, sugar, white flour? And how many days of 1/2 gallon of water per day, before declaring the start of my fast. I had some sever headaches last time and I’m very nervous about getting started because I feel I will fail and I do not want to cut the fast short once I start.

    June 27, 2012
    • Hi Sharon,

First, blessings to you on your plan for the fast. Clearly, the Holy Spirit is calling you to come closer to Him. He is so good and loves each of us so much!

As far at the water goes, drinking 64 ounces of water each day is a good habit all the time, not just during the Daniel Fast. Water is the best cleanser for our body, it keeps our cells hydrated so they can operate in the best form and it also keeps us from “fuller” so food cravings are diminished. So I encourage you to make drinking water a lifetime habit.

Regarding caffeine, sugar and processed foods to prepare for the fast, usually 7-10 days of tapering off from these substances is enough. The goal is that you want to be free of them by the time you enter your period of prayer and fasting so that you don’t have severe headaches and other withdrawal symptoms that will distract you from the purpose of your fast.

I hope this helps! Be blessed!

  46. Good Morning Susan: I have purchased your book and I am truly enjoying it. My problem is with the prayer. Were do I start. Some have said start in the Old Testament, some say start in the New Testament with the book of John, and I have been told to start with Proverbs which is the book of wisdom in the Old Testament, or the book of James which is the book of wisdom in the New Testament. I have also been told to start anywhere as long as I get started. Please help me. I want to do it right and the right way. Thanks Helen

God loves you Helen, and He is so very Faithful to keep you in the palm of His hand. He Is with you! I too, encourage you to start with reading the book of John… over and over a few times, get to know Jesus in a new way, and allow the Word of God to feed the re-born spirit inside of you.
In addition look up scriptures about the spirit of man (the born again inner man that is made in God’s image and in His likeness and is made to live eternally with Him), the soul (mind, will and emotions, flesh) and body (physical body, also flesh). And also, all scripture that refers to “Who you are in Christ!”, “In Him”, “Through Him”, and here are some additional Scriptures to look up: 1 Corinthians 9:27, Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:17, Galatians 5:24, Romans 8:1, Romans 8:4, Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:25, 1 Corinthians 6:15, James 4:1 Also, if you to go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/ click on Spiritual Life, there is a wealth of spiritual aids to help strengthen, build up and encourage you in your journey. Be Blessed on your Fast!

Hi Susan I would like to know if the soy meats are on the Daniel fast. I amgoing to do this fast as a way to eat more healthier and to help me in my ministry as I pastor the flock that God has chosen me to be over. Been following your website and now will try the fast I did try for a while for Lent but stopped some of the fast and I did feel better, so now I will go all the way Rev. C

    • Good morning Pastor,

Yes, you can use soy products and even beans on the Daniel Fast as excellent sources of protein and for substance. There is a little “catch” for spiritual fasting (as opposed to using the Daniel Fast for health issues). When we deny ourselves a food (biblical fasting is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose) and then just replace it with a substitute, we are still catering to the flesh. So during a Daniel Fast engaging in a “replacement” is an issue we each need to take up with the Holy Spirit. It’s a fine line and one that we each need to address with our Lord.

However, eating according to the Daniel Fast for health purposes is different. There are many excellent plant-based products that can be as satisfying as animal proteins. You will still want to read the list of ingredients in the products as many of them contain sweeteners and chemicals.

I hope this helps! Be blessed and thanks for raising this issue with your flock. We are in a health crisis. God has always had the answer for us. He created our amazing bodies and He also created the foods to nourish them and keep them fit and ready to serve! Raising the awareness of Christians to submit their bodies unto the Lord is a growing message that more and more pastors are being called to do! You might want to check out another program I teach that addresses this whole issue: http://choose-life-now.com

Hello fellow Daniel-fasters =) I did a 21 day Daniel fast at the beginning of the year and WOW, the most amazing thing I have done. I am 20 years old and really needed a lot of direction in my life. I got it! Isn’t it funny how Jesus tells us to ask and it shall be given to us, and then we are surprised when we recieve what we ask for? Haha =) I also lost weight and just felt SO good physically after. Anyways, I am about to do a 40 day Daniel Fast. I prayed about the duration I was supposed to do and this is exactly what I heard. SO, be encouraged! Keep contending and staying faithful, JESUS IS SO GOOD and you won’t regret laying down this time for His glory and your benefit =)
P.S. I read, The Daniel Fast book by Susan Gregory and it helped a ton, definitely recommend reading it before your fast!

Hi, I’m based in the UK and the ‘brown bread’ flour here is called wholemeal, is this the same as whole wheat flour you talk about?

Also I’m going to use soya milk (soy), all the makes I have found have calcium and vitamins added. Is this permissable in the fast?

    June 19, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Ali,
You may want to contact a Health food store or a Nutritionist (They LOVE to have people interested in learning about healthy foods) to find out if your brown bread flour is a Whole grain flour (it sounds like it but you’ll want to check to be sure). Also, there are many other whole grain flours available for use too, you just need to find out what is easily available in your region. Unsweetened, additive free plant based milks (Soy, Rice, Almond, Coconut, etc.) are fine on the fast, but only for use in recipes and on cereal not as a drinking beverage. Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. I hope this helps!

Can you have soy yogurt or soy ice cream?

    June 17, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Joanna,
From what I’ve seen, the non-dairy (soy) yogurts in the stores include cane juice as an ingredient, which is sugar before it’s granulated. So that would mean it’s out (which is more than likely true also for soy ice cream). Now, I have seen recipes for soy yogurt in which people use tapioca and agar as the stabilizers. That would be okay and then you can determine all the ingredients. I’m sorry I don’t have a good recipe on hand at the moment to give you, but I’ll start searching for one because yogurt with fresh fruit and nuts is a great way to start the day! Be Blessed!

Hello, I’m curious about is there a certain amount of nuts& dried fruit that I’m suppose too eat on a daily basis or is it no measurement amount ? I should use my own judgement ?

        July 4, 2012
      • Daniel Fast Team #

        Hi Deloria,
There are no scriptures in the Daniel Fast that specify the amount of food (portion size) or even number of times per day to eat during the fasting period. However, we need to keep in mind that this is a fast and portion control and the eating sensibly is appropriate. So eating three moderate meals and two small snacks a day would be appropriate. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!
