Food List

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” Daniel 10:2, 3

One of the great things about the Daniel Fast is that you are not limited to any specific amount of food, but rather to the kinds of food you can eat. The Daniel Fast is limited to vegetables (includes fruits) and water.

If you want a print out of this list in brochure form to use yourself or share with others, please visit www.Daniel-Fast.com

The Daniel Fast – available at all local and online bookstores.

Special Note: if you have health issues, please be sure to contact your health professional for advice before committing to any fast including the Daniel Fast. If you would like a list of the foods included and excluded in the Daniel Fast to show your doctor, just copy the contents of this page. Also, if you are interested in a collection of recipes that will take you through an entire 21-day Daniel fast, click here.

After answering hundreds of questions about the Daniel Fast, I am updating the food guidelines. My hope is that it will serve as a more complete list. The original list used by many people was issued in a book about fasting. I know the author tried to do the best he could, but that isn’t the same as getting hundreds of questions seeking clarification. So here is the new list that I hope helps.

I am the High Schools Assistant of a Youth ministry on the Gold Coast Australia and recently we have started 7 weeks on Evangelism. I have felt personally to do this fast to seek God for His heart beat for building His kingdom and for Him to grow my Youth ministry and give the young people a passion and boldness in proclaiming the gospel throughout their lives. Through this fast I hope to lessen myself and have more of God in my life so He can use me in obedience with reaching lost souls. All for His Glory.

hello im doing the daniel’s fast, and I was wondering if it was okay to eat soy cheese?

      Hi Shaun,
I haven’t used soy cheese, so I suggest that you READ THE LABEL to make sure it is sugar-free and chemical-free. Or… talk to someone at a health food store, if they have a product that fits the guidelines they will be able to quickly direct you to it. I hope this helps!

      Hi Felicia,
There is no sweeteners of any kind allowed on the fast (natural or artificial). So although Agave Nectar is natural and plant based, it’s still a sweetener and not allowed on the fast. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

I have decided to fast until God decides to pull me through something important in my life. I have been doing this for awhile, but I want to know if it is ever a time that it is ok to break the fast. For example, when celebrating birthdays or weddings. Is it ok to take part in such things or not? I am praying that God will give me a clear answer, meaning that in my heart I will feel no guilt for having stepped out on my fast. Even for an evening.

Thanks to whoever replies to me, I’d really appreciate it.

      Hi Genesis,
When you fast, you may occasionally find yourself facing delicate social or family/friends dilemmas. The key here is to check your heart and make sure the reason you push the “pause button” is coming from your spirit and you are not just giving in to a craving for a self-motivated reason. I have found that in most cases I can avoid these situations. And over all my years of fasting, it’s the rare occasion when I have paused my fast. With that said, don’t beat yourself up if you defer due to love, respect, or some other act of kindness or when unexpected situations arise. There are also many times when friends ask me to a meal at their home and I tell them I am on the Daniel Fast. I explain that there is no need for special arrangements or to change what will be eaten. I go on to clarify that I am totally satisfied with a vegetable salad and drinking water, and if that works, I will be happy to attend. So do your best to plan your fast around what events that you can, and when the unexpected comes up be quick to ask the Holy Spirit for His direction. He is faithful and He Will lead you! Be Blessed on your Fast!

I initially started this fast during consecration month for my church. As I began go see and experience the results of the Daniel Fast, i was moved to make it a way of life. I have been overweight, having a tough time with allergies and since doing the Daniel Fast my allergies are minimized and I have lost 24 lbs in 2 months. I did the Fast for the month of February and continued through Lent. I’ve added chicken and fish to the list and I continue to lose. I am gradually working my way back to the weight i was 22 years ago. What a great way of life.

    Hi!
This was my day 1 of the fast. I have to admit I was amazed preparing for it. I was stunned by the additives in foods even the “organic” food had “natural additives” that put the food in the NO list.
I have enjoyed the extra time spent with the Lord though.

The Daniel Fast is traditionally done for 21 days, some have gone for a longer length of time (up to 50 days), and some for shorter (7 days). This is up to your schedule and the leading of the Holy Spirit. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

what does but not limited to mean

    May 4, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

The statement “including but not limited to”, simply means, that this is a partial list… only intended to be an example, not a complete list!
An example would be: All whole grains are allowed which would include: whole wheat, brown rice, millet, quinoa, oats, barley, and popcorn. But not limited to only these, so any and all other whole grains that you find, are also allowed even though not listed. I hope this helps!

      Hi Christy,
You’ll need to read the Ingredients list, and If All comply with the guidelines then you’re good. Keep in mind that the Daniel Fast is completely plant-based and additive free. Most egg substitutes have egg whites or additives in them. I hope this helps!

is lemon and ginger tea allowed?..it is caffeine free..

    May 3, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Manga,
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. One of the two foundational scriptures for the fast is Daniel 1:12 says, “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and Water to drink.” This is why water is the only drinking beverage on the fast, so no caffeine free tea or even herbal teas. A slice (or splash) of lemon in water is fine. I hope this helps!

I want to know if there is any specific eating schedule while being on the fast? I am on day 3 and I find myself wanting to eat the things I can on the fast at all times.

    May 3, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Lakisha,
There is no specific time of day to eat or not eat for the Daniel Fast. We advise 3 moderate meals per day with 2 small snacks. Here is a general food list to help you: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All Nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices.
For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. Also, if you to go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/about.html there is a wealth of recipes, and spiritual aids to help prepare, strengthen, build up and encourage you in your journey. I just had some mushrooms as part of a lentil soup I made. I feel like it really added some good taste (it was almost like my version of meat! LOL). But when I was thinking about it, mushrooms aren’t really a vegetable, they are a fungus. So are they really allowed on the Daniel Fast? Not sure if they fit the category of “pulse” mentioned in the scripture. Thanks!

    May 2, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Melissa,
Mushrooms can be confusing, since they are not a true vegetable in the sense that it does not have any leaves, roots, or seeds, and really does not need any light to grow. However, that’s how they’re classified in the food groups and there’s no sense in giving “edible fungi” their own category, is there? While they’re not nearly as nutrient-dense as many other types of vegetables, mushrooms do tend to have a good supply of copper — a key nutrient not widely found in substantial amounts in other foods. They also aren’t bad sources of potassium, folate, niacin, fiber and selenium. And, prepared properly, they can be a tasty, satisfying, low-calorie meat substitute. With that said, Yes, mushrooms are allowed on the Daniel Fast. I hope this helps, Be blessed on your Fast!

What’s the best way to end the fast? Food wise since our body isn’t use to what we’ve abstained from?

    May 1, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

You will need to be careful during the first couple days of “ordinary eating.” To keep your body from rebelling loudly, reintroduce foods slowly. This is especially important when resuming coffee and caffeine, meat, dairy products and sweets. Small portions are better and easing back into consumption of these foods is advised.
Also, when you end your fast, reflect on the lessons you learned during your fasting period. I know many have learned valuable lessons about healthy eating and want to carry those lessons into their future. Perhaps you have gained new and positive habits for prayer and daily Bible reading. Don’t leave these gems behind until you fast again. Instead, carry them with you and allow them to affect your everyday life. Be Blessed on your Journey!

Can being on the Daniel Fast for more then 21 days cause any health problems?

    May 1, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Genesis,
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, the length of the fast varies from 7–50 days. Afterward, many have even chosen to keep this eating plan as a lifestyle. However, there are suggested slight modifications to the eating plan such as adding in occassional dairy, fish and chicken. The Daniel Fast is an experience for the whole person – body, soul and spirit. Many people experience vastly improved health during their Daniel Fast since this is such a healthy way to eat. Also, check out this site: http://www.DanielFastResearch.com which is amazing with the clinical research that has been done on the Daniel Fast. Richard Bloomer is wonderful man of God who is also a researcher from the University of Memphis. The results of his clinical studies are impressive. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Journey!

  21. Please forget the post I just wrote – a sweetener is a sweetener! Thanks for being so patient on the numerous questions here, just like mine. Re-reading the blogs just answered my own question. I looked at the other Lara Bars and they are perfect! I don’t know how she does some bars on 3 ingredients only, but they sounds great! Can’t wait to try them!

  22. I noticed the Lara Bar Powerbar’s 1st ingredient was high fructose corn syrup. Is this okay because it comes from corn? Is it different from the sugar cane plant? I love your blog – thanks for helping all of us on this diet. I’ve decided to stay on the diet and this was okay’d by my doctor due to use of protein (non-dairy) powder in my fruit smoothies every morning (with almond milk). It’s great!

i am a diabetic, can i go on the Daniel diet?

    May 1, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Earlene,
Yes, you can participate in the Daniel fast. I encourage you to take a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines to your Health Care Provider and together make the required modifications if any to your fast (and then, if this modification includes some meat, then that’s fine).
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, men and women with insulin or Type 2 diabetes experience wonderful results on the Daniel Fast “IF” they are wise about the foods they eat. Whole grain cereals and leafy green vegetables are packed with protein yet very low on the glycemic index. The same is true of legumes. Many people with Type 2 diabetes are able to balance their blood sugar levels with the food they eat and can soon eliminate or drastically reduce the meds they take. The same is true with insulin-dependent diabetics – often able to greatly reduce the amount of insulin necessary to balance their BS levels.
You will want to make sure to eat foods that are “low on the glycemic index” and not sugary fruits. Of course you want to take the advice of your health professional, And access your own knowledge. But you can get plenty of protein in other ways than nuts and peanut butter. Again, Whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables are excellent sources of protein. Also, you will want to eat complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbohydrates. They are processed very differently in the body. You need to stay away from simple carbohydrates.
      - Some examples of healthy foods containing “Complex Carbohydrates”:
Spinach, Whole Barley, Grapefruit, Turnip Greens, Buckwheat flour, Apples, Lettuce, Prunes, Water Cress, Oat bran flour, Apricots, Dried, Zucchini, Oatmeal, Pears, Asparagus, Oat bran cereal, Plums, Artichokes, Muesli, Strawberries, Okra, Wild rice, Oranges, Cabbage, Brown rice, Yams, Celery, Multi-grains, Carrots, Cucumbers, Pinto beans, Potatoes, Dill Pickles, low fat Soybeans, Radishes, Lentils, Broccoli, Navy beans, Garbanzo beans, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, Kidney beans, Eggplant, Soy milk, Lentils, Onions, Whole meal spelt flour, Split peas.
      - Some examples of foods to Avoid containing “simple carbohydrates”: All of which are NOT allowed on the fast. (Simple carbohydrates are more refined, are usually found in foods with fewer nutrients, and tend to be less satisfying and more fattening): Table sugar, Corn syrup, Fruit juice, Candy, Cake, Bread made with white flour, Pasta made with white flour, Soda pop, such as Coke®, Pepsi®, Mountain Dew®, etc., Candy, All baked goods made with white flour, Most packaged cereals.
You can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

Smoothies Are Allowed on the fast when made as a meal replacement (since they are considered a “liquid meal” rather than a beverage). A Daniel Fast “smoothie” is simply what you have described here, blended fruits, vegetables, if needed a splash of unsweetened plant-based milk (Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, etc.) or some Natural, unsweetened juices. Hi Danielle,
Only a few have molasses in them. You just need to keep reading ingredients labels until you find one with just peanuts (and maybe some salt too). Adams 100% Natural Peanut butter is one that I know has Daniel Fast friendly ingredients. I hope this helps!

    - Any particular seasonings I should/shouldn’t use
    - Tinned tomatoes are allowed

Vinegar is allowed as long as the Ingredients are Daniel Fast friendly. Unsweetened additive free Coconut milk is fine for use in recipes and on cereal just not as a drinking beverage, water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. All natural sweetener free and additive free seasonings, spices, herbs, salt and pepper are fine on the fast. Canned tomatoes are also fine, just read the Ingredients label to make sure it is free of sweeteners and additives. Be Blessed!

Im on day three of the daniel fast I am wondering if tomato sauce with canned mixed vegetables and canned corn is ok im wanting to do this right but it seems like there is some kind d of additive in everything like biggy fructose corn syrup that why I did not eat the campbell tomato soup

    April 28, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Joe,
You are right about having a hard time finding tomato sauce and other prepared foods that are sugar-free. The only tip I can offer is to keep looking, because they can be found. Just keep reading those labels, look for organic or natural labels and you will find some sugar-free products (I make my own Tomato soup: tomato paste, water, sometimes brown rice, seasonings and spices).
Also, see “lite” prepared foods as they generally are sugar-free. Some things that might be helpful for you to know: Calcium Chloride is in a lot of Natural and Organic foods and is on the edge as far as I’m concerned. It’s an allowed compound for certified organic foods, so I tell people it’s “allowed but not preferred” and they should try to find options that don’t include it “whenever possible”. Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C (when natural it’s fine) used for a natural preservative. It’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. I hope this helps, Be blessed on your Fast!

is whole grain bread allowed? also whole grain pasta and ragu sauce?

    April 25, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Jon,
Traditional whole grain bread is not allowed on the fast mainly due to the leavening (yeast, baking soda/powder). If you can find a whole grain bread that is Daniel Fast friendly it would then have no yeast, sugar, eggs or additives it will then be more of a whole grain Flat Bread or a whole grain Tortillas. Ezekiel brand whole grain Tortillas is a Daniel Fast friendly tortilla to look for. Whole Grain Pastas are also allowed on the fast, as long as the rest of the ingredients are Daniel fast friendly. You’ll have to check the Ragu Ingredients list for sweeteners and additives. It’s hard to find pasta sauce that does not have sweeteners or other ingredients not allowed on the Daniel Fast. I usually make my own, which is very simple with green bell pepper, onions, garlic, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and Italian herbs, or consider a Pesto sauce.
To further assist you in your fast, you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps!

Re your comment “Water is the only beverage on the Fast”: you previously wrote fruit (& veggie?) juices are ok. Please clarify for me. Thanks, Chip

Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, i.e.: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Frui/vegetable juices are fine in recipes and including smoothies. Smoothies Are Allowed on the fast when made as a “meal replacement” (since they are considered a “liquid meal” rather than a beverage). A Daniel Fast “smoothie” is simply blended fruits, vegetables, if needed a splash of unsweetened plant-based milk (Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, etc.) or some Natural, unsweetened juice. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

    Hi,
I’m still breastfeeding my 10 month old baby but am very keen to really keen to change the whole families diet. Our two older children have digestive problems, including food allergies. They’re both on laxatives daily. Our 10 month old had bad reflux between 2 and 8 months. I have osteoarthritis, post-natal depression, chronic sinus, fatigue. My husband has a lot of back pain, shoulder pain, chronic sinus and fatigue. Can you recommend dietary guidelines somewhere that we can follow. I know we shouldn’t eat processed foods but it’s hard to cut them out when money is tight and life is so busy.
    Many thanks,
    Tasha

      Hi Tasha,
First of all for you, We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and/or the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however since your body has extra demands on it right now you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways. Pay close attention to get plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables.
Concerning all the family health issues: The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, so all of you will likely benefit from the Fast, even with chronic health concerns . . . but don’t abandon the advice of your health professional. Carefully go over and compare the Daniel Fast Guidelines with the instructions from your physician for each family member, make the appropriate modifications, and the key here for you will be to plan out your meals. You can get a copy of the Meal Planning Guide and a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com enter your email address and they will be emailed back to you.
However, rather than fasting if you are looking for a simpler starting point for the whole family then I would suggest that you start with: Removing sugar, manmade sweeteners, white flour, white rice and all chemical additives, and use only whole grains, occasional chicken, fish and dairy of course. By simply removing these listed things Many do see and feel marked improvement in their health, I think your family will too! I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Journey!

My girl friend says that I can have brown sugar during the fast. Is that true?

    April 23, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

No, this is not true. There is no sweeteners of any kind allowed on the fast (natural or artificial), so brown sugar is not allowed on the fast. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

Thank you. I thought that brown sugar is a no no . I am preparing myself right now.

    Is spousal intimacy allowed?

    April 23, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

“Marital relations do not have to stop during the Daniel Fast”…. Unless, you and your spouse “agrees” to that practice. 1 Corinthians 7:5 “Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control”. Scripture says that both the husband and wife must agree if sexual relations are to be withheld for a period of time. So, even if your husband were to join you in the Daniel Fast, the aspect of Marital relations in fasting would have to be agreed upon, since it is not a “automatic given” part of the Daniel Fast, (the two of you decide to add this in). I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Journey!

I’m assuming then that the peanut butter that would be allowed has absolutely no sugar in it?

    April 23, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Brittany,
Yes, this is correct (no sweeteners and no additives). A good peanut butter should have as its Ingredients ONLY: Peanuts….and maybe some salt. Adams 100% Natural Peanut Butter is one that we can recommend. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

  43. Can the Daniel Fast be used as a lifestyle way of eating every day? My husband just turned 55 and both of us have gained weight. We are looking for a healthier lifestyle. Is the Daniel Fast for life?

    April 23, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Misty,
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, and many have chosen to keep this eating plan as a lifestyle. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Journey!

tomorow starts a week long daniel style fast at my church. this is my first corporate fast that actually had a biblical model, although in college, I did a fast of only juices, milk and water for a week for revival week.

I know this is semiredundant, but are avocados ok? I’m pretty sure they are because I have a couple receipe ideas, but I want to make sure.

thanks for your work. I am sure God is going to use this to “reveal” to me how much bad stuff I eat on a regular basis and how much better I can feel and live and worship without it.

How long is the Daniel fast? Is it 21 days, 40 d or is it at the discretion of the person fasting? Thank you

    April 20, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Rose,
The Daniel Fast is traditionally done for 21 days, some have gone for a longer length of time (up to 50 daus), and some for shorter (7 days). This is up to your schedule and the leading of the Holy Spirit. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

    April 20, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Cynthia,
We do recommend three moderate meals and two small snacks per day. Some people add in the restriction of not eating until after 6:00pm, however this is not a Daniel Fast requirement. Is Ketchup allowed while on the Daniel Fast?

    April 19, 2012
    • You’ll need to read the list of ingredients on the label. If it includes anything not allowed according to the Daniel Fast Guidelines, then no. The main thing to look for would be sweeteners or chemicals.

      Be blessed on your fast!

What type of dressing is used for a salad?

    April 16, 2012

      Hi Jenise,
A favorite prepared salad dressing is Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing, all the ingredients are acceptable for the Daniel Fast. And yes, you can also make your own dressings easily and quickly. There are many recipes in the Daniel Fast Cookbooks at http://daniel-fast.com/store.html Be blessed on your fast!
