Food List

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” Daniel 10:2, 3

One of the great things about the Daniel Fast is that you are not limited to any specific amount of food, but rather to the kinds of food you can eat. The Daniel Fast is limited to vegetables (includes fruits) and water.

If you want a print out of this list in brochure form to use yourself or share with others, please visit www.Daniel-Fast.com

The Daniel Fast – available at all local and online bookstores.

Special Note: if you have health issues, please be sure to contact your health professional for advice before committing to any fast including the Daniel Fast. If you would like a list of the foods included and excluded in the Daniel Fast to show your doctor, just copy the contents of this page. Also, if you are interested in a collection of recipes that will take you through an entire 21-day Daniel fast, click here.

After answering hundreds of questions about the Daniel Fast, I am updating the food guidelines. My hope is that it will serve as a more complete list. The original list used by many people was issued in a book about fasting. I know the author tried to do the best he could, but that isn’t the same as getting hundreds of questions seeking clarification. So here is the new list that I hope helps.

Please make sure to READ THE LABEL when purchasing packaged, canned or bottled foods. They should be sugar-free and chemical-free. Keep this in mind as you review this list of acceptable foods.

Can we have butter and honey?

    January 21, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

The Daniel fast is totally plant based, so butter is not allowed on the fast. Also, there are no sweeteners of any kind allowed on the fast (natural or artificial). Now, while all foods on the Daniel Fast are natural . . . not all natural foods are acceptable. Natural sweeteners such as honey, although natural…. it’s still a sweetener and to be avoided. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

YES, you can use hot sauce…. if the ingredients comply with the allowed foods (check for sweeteners and/or chemicals). Be blessed!

I know you can’t eat chicken, but how about cook with chicken broth??

    January 21, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Patrick, you’ll want to use vegetable broth in place of chicken broth due to the animal protein that is in it (free of additives and sweeteners). Be Blessed!

I was wondering if its okay to eat tater bites.
The ingredients are: potatoes, vegetable oil, (contains one or more of the following oils; canola, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, corn) contains 2% or less corn starch- modified, dehydrated onion, dextrose, salt, sodium acid pyophosphate added to maintain color

    January 21, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

My guess is these have been deep fried so they would not be allowed. Instead make your own DF version and baked them in the oven, Be Blessed!

      Hi Kathy,
The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, so you will likely benefit from the Fast. And yes, you can fast even if you have a chronic illness . . . BUT, don’t abandon the advice of your health professional. Carefully go over and compare the Daniel Fast Guidelines with the instructions from your physician, make the appropriate modifications, and the key here for you will be to plan out your meals. You can get a copy of the Meal Planning Guide and a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com enter your email address and they will be emailed back to you. We encourage you to take a copy to your healthcare provider and together make any needed modifications to the eating plan. hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

  7. I have a question on a certain food.

The list says no deep fried foods including corn chips. My family buys some that are made fresh and have no preservatives. They aren’t even packaged and sealed. They contain only water, ground corn, and lime (although I had no idea until I read the label because they have no flavoring.)
They are fried in natural oil and contain no salt. Is this ok?
I have low blood sugar and iron deficiency so finding the right balance for the Daniel fast is a challenge. My doctor has instructed me to eat “at least 6 meals a day.” because if my blood sugar drops my body gets weak and I get nauseated.

    January 20, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Because these chips are deep fried they are not allowed (even though the ingredients sound healthy). Instead, look for some that have the same good sounding ingredients listed and are Baked. Always, keep to your healthcare providers instructions when going on any fast. Be Blessed!

  8. Meagan #

Hello, I’m curious about canned foods, why juice is allowed in recipes, and ingredients such as citric acid and absorbic acid. Are those allowed?

    January 20, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Meagan,
Citric acid and ascorbic acid both occur naturally in citrus fruits and are used as natural preservatives in a lot of canned foods (chemically, the only difference between the two is there is no vitamin C in citric acid). Because they are very cheap to manufacture artificially, I make sure to look for canned foods that list it as “natural ascorbic acid.” Otherwise, I only buy foods that are free of all artificial chemicals. Liquids such as unsweetened additive free juices and unsweetened additive plant based milks are allowed for use in recipes, because they are being used as a food ingredients and not a drinking beverage. I hope this helps.

Hello. Is it safe to eat canned veggies with disodium EDTA?

    January 20, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Disodium edta is a chemical and not allowed on the Daniel Fast. In fact, many health conscious people keep it from their diets all the time. You may have to look a little, but you can find canned beans with ordinary salt or no salt at all in it. I hope this helps and be blessed on your fast!

Are we allowed to eat food that has been made in a bee or chicken broth?? My mom made posole (spell check) and she said that I can eat just the corn and broth with the cabbage an radish and lime garnish. But I was nervous to because I haven’t been able to find anything on broths.

    Thanks

    January 19, 2014
    • The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based, so no chicken or beef broth is allowed. You can substitute vegetable broth in recipes, however.

I currently weigh 125lbs, and I’m 5’6″ with a high metabolism. Consuming fat is as important to my body as protein. Is there any way to make sure that I don’t lose too much weight in the 21 days of the fast? Or perhaps I should alter it a little so that my health isn’t compromised? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    January 19, 2014
    • Hi Niki,

Two options – eat plant-based foods high in oil content (nuts, seeds, avocados, etc.) OR, keep the core of the Daniel Fast as due to your special needs, add what you need to stay healthy. Fasting should never bring harm to your body.

      Be blessed.

Am I to understand that juicing carrots, apples, and beets are not allowed on the fast?

    January 18, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Donald,
Because water is the only drinking beverage allowed, simply juicing fruits/vegetables get’s into a grey area and could be a bit too close to drinking juice rather than a smoothie as a meal replacement. Blended fruits and vegetables (made more hearty like Smoothies) are considered a “meal replacement” and these are allowed on the Daniel Fast again as a meal replacement. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

    • Christina, I encourage you to get a copy of the Daniel Fast book if you want to be prepared for your fast. It covers all the food issues, plus so many spiritual truths and benefits about fasting. Here is the link to check it out: Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory

Meanwhile, the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water (see Daniel 1).

      Be blessed on your fast!

        Hi Susan
Thank you for responding to my question. My husband and I have been on the Daniel fast for almost 21 days. I believe our fast will be over in 5 days. We have stuck to the Daniel fast to the best of our ability w/o having read your book. However before finding your site & reading the list of acceptable foods we were eating whole wheat bread. I think 3 days is how much yeast from bread we consumed before we knew better. I want to thank you for preparing such elaborate lists & also answering so many people’s questions as regularly as you do. I have decided I want to continue the diet because of how much better I feel & because with my last pregnancy I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I’ve read somewhere that this diet balances out glucose levels. So I’m sticking with the diet in hopes I’ll never have to be medicated.

Hello. I am looking to begin the fast in a couple of weeks. I have two questions.
    1. Are all plant based protein powders allowed to be used during the fast? It is lactose free anevis a blend of soy, wheat, and pea protein. I work out and sometime drink fruit smoothies as a meal replacement using protein powder. Will that still be acceptable uf I switch to the plant alternative?
    2. I have very busy schedule band I am often on the run. Do you have suggestions for appropriate snacks?

    Thank You ^_^

    January 17, 2014

Yes, a plant based protein powder in a meal replacement smoothie is fine, just make sure there is no sweeteners or additives.
