Is black rice ok? We just discovered it and love it. Thanks
Hi Doug,
Yes, wild rice, brown and black rice are great options, just make sure the Ingredients list shows nothing added. Be Blessed!
I have been a fast with my Church and it is similar to the Daniel Fast, I want to continue this journey.
Hello,My Name is Stephanie Grayson, I’m starting The Daniel Fast on May 10,2013 I’m just praying that my husband would try this with me
Hi Stephanie,
If he is not willing to do the full fast with you ask him if he would be willing to do a partial fast (giving up desserts for instance, while you do the full fast). Any participation from him will be a step in the right direction. We are standing in agreement with you for Gods very best in your life! Be Blesed on your Journey!
Hello my name is Lanice and I start my Fast tomorrow. So excited to see what got have in store for me in this Daniel Fast!!! I’m from Jacksonville, Fl. and I’m 21 years old.
Be blessed on your fast! It’s an amazing experience and truly does benefit the spirit, soul and body!
Dear. Sherri,
Journaling has significantly stregnthed my prayer and with that my walk with christ. It helped me understand my feelings at different points in my journey so that I’ve realised there’s no random experience in my life, everything is God led. We sometimes expect immediate breakthroughs in prayer and often forgett the many moments of grace we have daily and how each moment builds on the other and evetually lead us to our God chosen and prepared destination. Ever since I started journaling I I have witnessed God grace in my life daily. Please make time to also read all that you have written in your journal, occassionally. That for me was a treasure.
To God Be The Glory
Awesome confirmation I am doing another type of fast just to prepare for my Daniel fast bcuz I would not want to start & not finish bcuz my poor terrrible eating habits for the last 1.5 yrs.has to transistion back into LESS & MUCH MORE HEALTHIER CHOICES & GODS WORD SAY IT IS BETTTER NOT TO MAKE A VOW TO GOD THEN TO MAKE ONE & BREAK IT ALTHOUGH WE ALL ARE GUILTY OF THAT IN SOME WAY AT SOME TIME THE FAST TO ME IS TOO SACRED & SERIOUS TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY SOOO I WILL DO ONE IN AUG.GODS HOLY SPIRIT IS HELPING WITH BABY STEPS BACK TO HEALTHY EATING!!!
I first decided to join the Daniel fast because I am trying to get by body back into good health and physical shape. But after reading more about the fast, I realized that my spiritual health was most important. I started on April 15 and here I am in day 2. As I thought of Daniel this morning, I remember learning that he prayed 3 times a day. Well, that is discipline, but I know that God deserves and expects us to talk to confer with Him throughout the day….therefore, I decided I would keep a journal. I am looking forward to real changes in my life, starting with me! I pray God will continue to bless and keep you, all whose mind is on Him! Love and Peace! Sherri

I’m from NC and today marks the end of day two of my 21 day Daniel Fast. I have never felt closer to God then I do now. I spend more time feasting on his word then in the kitchen, scavenging. I’m learning so much about Him and myself. I hope to use this experience to not only bring myself closer to the Lord, but others as well. Especially my family.
This is also the best I’ve ever felt, both spiritually and physically. Feeding myself the way God intended: through His word, prayer and the most natural diet out there. All of this is His perfect creation. And the only word I can think of to sum all of this up is: WOW!!
Awesome truth!!!!
Back in January and February I did my very first fasting experience. What a trip I experienced with my LORD and Savior. It was amazing how he answered prayer and how close I grew to him not to mention the healing process that came about by cleansing my body with healthy food. Getting ready to start my second fasting experience in two weeks.
Thanks to Susan for all of the encouragement during this time.
Hi again,
I’m on day 9 of the fast and in my search for suitable food products I have come across ingredients such as ‘dehydrated or evaporated cane juice or syrup’, ‘cocoa’ and I was wondering if these are okay to have on the fast.
Thank you for your advice. Really enjoying this site and all that it has to offer.
Hi Franciska,
Dehydrated or Evaporated cane juice and syrups are all sweeteners, which are not allowed on the fast. Unsweetened cocoa powder (additive free) is allowed for use in recipes. Be Blessed!
I’m on day 2 of the fast. Glory to God, as I seek to consecrate myself for Him!
Praise God!
My husband and I started the Daniel Fast on April 1. Not too foolhardy I expect. We are having good prayer time together. I might say that I have been made aware of how much I used food to soothe my emotions. And so there does seem to be an emotional struggle.
Yep, well said Sandy. We often don’t realize the emotional attachment to things/food until they are threatened or removed. Then..boy oh boy, the flesh flairs up trying to take control back. I encourage you that you are right on track, the fact that you are having an emotional struggle is absolute confirmation that the flesh Needs to be disciplined and put under the dominion of your spirit. You can do it…Be bold, be courageous and do it! And…Be Blessed on your Journey!
Reading your post Michael and Sandy Haverstick, I just got revelation about my journey in this (I am on day 9 of the fast) and I realized that I too am having an emotional struggle. Didn’t see before how much I was under the influence and control of food. Thanks for posting this. And Daniel Fast Team thank you also for your reply post “…our flesh needs to be disciplined and put under the dominion of your spirit.” Wow! Very well said. Thank you!! Bless you all.
Awesome! I am on day 13 and this has been an amazing journey thus far. God is revealing and healing lots of areas I’m my life and in my relationships. Many blessings to you!
Hi Mary,
We are excited for you as you enter into this time of seeking God through prayer and fasting, He has great things in store for you. Be Blessed on your Journey!
Hi Mary,

Day one, I’m ready! Glory be to God
Thank you for providing a safe, biblical way to fast! I’m on day 11 and feeling great. I’ve decided to break the fast for Easter Sunday dinner as my family will gather together for a meal and will pick it up again right after that meal. I’ve decided that water is the key! I do have one question: Jimmy John’s potato chips contain only potatoes, salt and peanut oil. Would that be fast friendly?
Hi Kathleen,
The ingredients are fine, so they would be okay “if” they are baked chips and not deep fried. Be Blessed!
I just began my fast yesterday. I haven’t completed the book but I am doing the devotionals and have read the first few chapters to understand the concepts. I am fasting for a few reasons – 1. for peace and wisdom to be with my brothers and I as we talk about our mother’s home and what to do with it – it has been 7 years since she passed away. A lot of water under this bridge and broken relationships in the midst of it. 2. For God to give me healing in regards to my relationship with food and with myself. Thus far I am doing well – yesterday was a hard day because I felt weak. I think it is the withdrawls from the carbs and sugar. I shopped for food last night and made hummus and granola. I felt encouraged but I realize that I will NOT succeed if I am not willing to make food. I am use to eating on the go or with little effort. I would appreciate your prayers. God needs to heal me from the inside out. Thanks,Mary from Mesa,AZ
Hi Mary,
We are standing in agreement with you that as you keep your mind set on the Lord He will keep you in His perfect peace! And…you will hear all that the Holy Spirit is saying to you in this time and season! Deut.28:1-14, Ephesians 1:17-24, Rev.12:11,Jer. 29:11 Be Blessed on your Journey!
I am praying for you, Mary, in agreement. God is our strength and grace our basis. My stumbling block is caffeine. I’m on day 2. Please pray for me to give this to God. Thank you!
Am looking forward for God’s grace upon me
Hi this is my 11th day fasting, & I wanted to know if unsweetened almond milk is allowed?
Hi Candi,
Yes, for use in recipes and on cereal but not for drinking. Be Blessed!
How do I start a 21 day fast? What do I need to eat and drink?
Sincerely,
Maria
Hi Maria,
Here is a general list of the Daniel Fast allowed foods: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All whole grain flours (and pastas), All Nuts and seeds, All legumes (beans), All quality oils. Beverages: Water only – spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices (remember, All foods must be free of Chemical additives and sweeteners). For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps!
My brothers & sisters,
God is great; I didn’t know if I could do this fast because I am a big meat eater: but when I think about how good God has been in my life & how Jesus took the beating for our sins I have the strength to grow through it for a closer walk in christ.
Hello Friends. Ill pray for you on you journey! May God use this time in your life and mine to glorify Him. Prayers would be appreciated too:) He loves us and will teach us through this fast.
I will start the fast along with my husband and a friend. Looking forward for God showing us great things.Blessings
Can you use italian dressing
Re: Italian salad dressing, the problem with prepared dressings is that it is hard to find one that is free of additives and sweeteners, so check the Ingredients list on the one you’re considering. A prepared dressing that fits the Daniel Fast is Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing. You can also make your own salad dressings and there are many recipes in the Daniel Fast Cookbooks http://www.daniel-fast.com I hope this helps!
can we have grits on the Daniel Fast?
Yes, both yellow and white grits are allowed. Just be sure to prepare them in a way using only ingredients that comply with the Daniel Fast. Be blessed!
Hi! Starting the fast tomorrow. Question: May I continue to take the daily vitamins, such as Vit E, Glucosamine, etc?
Yes you can take daily vitamins, although we encourage you to find supplements that are free of sweeteners or man-made chemicals. I hope this helps!

help me ive been on this fast and ive been very obedient eeating fruits veggies and following the meal plans but i am xtremly constipated . why please give me pointers
Due to the high fiber on the fast, rarely do I hear of people getting constipated on the Daniel Fast. So, how is your water intake? As a general rule you need to be drinking half your body weight in ounces ie., 180 lbs = 90 ounces of water per day. . . from there it would be good to evaluate the foods you are eating to see if the combinations of the foods or the types are promoting constipation. I hope this helps!
Hello Team, over the past 4 days i have been preparing to start on my journey which is to focus on self improvement specifically on my health and financial aspect by opening myself up to the Lord and truly listening.
I too currently experience constipation and take “Smooth Move Tea” which is 99% organic, 1 cup a day. I do this to not have to take over the counter medicines. Can i continue with it.
It is sugar free as well.
Hi Monica,
Due to the high fiber on the fast, rarely do we hear of people getting constipated on the Daniel Fast. I do understand that this is how you maintain colon health with your existing diet (and it does sound like it is a healthy option for you). However, the ultimate goal would be to have your daily diet and water intake be the natural source of this function. With that said, how is your water intake? As a general rule you need to be drinking half your body weight in ounces ie., 180 lbs = 90 ounces of water per day. . . in addition it would be good to evaluate the foods you are eating to see if the combinations of the foods or the types are promoting constipation. Then in the interim, if you still need to take this tea medicinally as you retrain yourself by all means do so. Be Blessed on your Journey!
Dear Moderator,
It seems as though my question was misread. I asked if Coconut WATER was allowed since it’s a natural water; your response pertained to milk which I understand is not permitted as a beverage.
The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water . . . Water extracted from a coconut would be considered a juice. You can use coconut water in recipes, just not as a drinking beverage.
Hello, trying to get on blog.
