Whole Grain Pasta on the Daniel Fast
I don’t know if you’ve noticed the pasta companies are heeding the desires of more and more people who are getting away from white processed flour and into whole grains. Consequently, they’ve created lines of whole grain pasta in just about every shape and size.
With all that said, you still need to read the labels. Golden Grain’s Multi-Grain Spaghetti has what they call “crystallized cane juice.” Sounds an awful like sugar to me! But I also buy a store brand that is 100% Durum Wheat (Fred Meyer stores are a Pacific Northwest chain, but part of the Kroger line). That’s totally within the Daniel Fast Guidelines.
If you haven’t eaten whole wheat pasta before, you’ll find that the flavor is indeed different. Not bad . . . just different! I actually prefer the flavor because it . . . well . . . it has more flavor! One of my favorite ways to prepare pasta is to saute vegetables in a little olive oil or just braise them in water until tender. Mix them with cooked pasta and some olive oil. When not fasting I add Parmesan cheese, but I just leave that ingredient out during the fast.
You can also use prepared sauces (again, check the label for ingredients) along with sauteed or braised onions and garlic. Heat everything up and then just pour it over cooked pasta.
I think this is a really nice addition to the foods that are within the Daniel Fast Guidelines. These are not substitutes, but rather a different kind of food. Whole grain pasta is much better for you and offers 7 grams of protein per serving (3/4 cup of dried pasta).
So, enjoy this nice new product line! It’s not really an advancement, but rather choosing to go back to what is good, true and healthy!

Yes, nutritional yeast is allowed since it is not a leavening agent.
Are nutritional yeast flakes allowed? If yes, grind up macadamia nuts, add the yeast flakes, and you have parmesan cheese!
No, processed means that the ingredients have been tampered with, such as white rice or white flour where the bran and germ have been removed leaving only the starch endosperm. Or foods that have lots of chemicals to extend the shelf life. Those are just two examples of “processed foods.”
For pasta on the Daniel Fast, you want only whole grain pasta.
Be blessed!
But wouldn’t pasta fall under the “Nothing Processed” guideline?
Yes, veggie pasta is allowed. Be sure to read the list of ingredients to make sure they comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines. You can also have whole grain pasta. I prefer the whole grain (mixed grains) rather than 100% whole wheat. But that’s a preference thing.
Be blessed
can we eat veggie pasta? (spinach pasta to be exact)
Yes, Natalie.
All whole grain pastas are allowed if there are not sweeteners or chemicals.
Be blessed!
is wholewheat 100% spaghetti allowed with durum and gluten only? No sugar.
Yes! Great choice for the Daniel Fast.
I found brown rice pasta (gluten free) is this allowed?
Hi Monique,
Ezekiel Bread is made with sprouted grains, but it is not allowed on the Daniel Fast because it contains leavening. However, you can use Ezekiel whole grain tortillas, which are available in most health food stores. Be Blessed!
Hi…which Daniel Fast allow Ezekiel bread? I believe the information provided is incorrect.
Yes, Leverne, whole wheat Matzo is allowed on the Daniel Fast.
Be blessed!
Hi wanted to know if those Jewish breads can be eaten during the fast. Its just made of water and salt? I think its calles Mazot/matoh? not sure, but i seen it in the shops.
Hi Sharmaine,
In most cases, yellow rice is ordinary white rice that is prepared with a spice such as saffron or turmeric. These spices give the rice its trademark appearance and flavor. However, the White rice is not a whole grain so it is not allowed on the fast. You can use a brown rice or any other whole grain rice and using the same spices get a Daniel Fast version. Be Blessed!
One other question: would it be acceptable to eat yellow rice?
Check out the list of ingredients on the label. My guess is that artificial ingredients are included and they are not allowed on the Daniel Fast.
Be blessed!
Can I have instant noodles or ramen during the Daniel fast?
Thanks 🙂
Ezekiel brand whole grain tortillas, Trader Joes carries them fresh and Most health food stores carries them in their frozen foods section. Be Blessed on your Fast!
Finding it challenging to find a whole wheat tortillas with out sugar or additives any ideas for brands?
Hi Stacy,
The allergy warning is just that, the trace amount that may or may not be in the product will not effect your fast, so this product is fine.
Be Blessed on your Journey!
The Great Value brand of whole wheat pastas carried at Walmart says 100% durum whole wheat flour as the only ingredient but it does say as an allergy warning that traces of egg might be present. Should I avoid this brand b/c of that? If so, what brand of pasta do you purchase?
Hi Ryan,
Sounds like a good one to me! Good Job!
What about “Amy’s Premium Organic Pasta Sauce – Family Marinara”? I used this last night. The ingredients seem to be acceptable and are as follows: Organic Tomato Puree, Filtered Water, Organic Onions, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Organic Garlic, Organic Black Pepper, and Organic Spices.
Hi Ronni
I make my own since I have yet to find one that is free of chemicals and/or sweeteners. Plus, they are so easy to make!
Hi,
What about marinara/pasta sauces. Are any of these prepared without added sugar or chemicals?
We tried the durum wheat spaghetti noodles and they were delicious!
Hi Tonia,
The only bread allowed are those without any kind of leavening, which leaves flat breads such as tortillas or chapattis. A friend told me that there is a new Ezekiel Flat Bread that is good.
You will need to READ THE LABELS when you shop for prepared flat breads since most include sugar and/or chemicals in their ingredients, neither of which are allowed on the Daniel Fast.
I hope this helps. Blessings to you on the fast.
I did not exactly see a topic for breads, is there any type of bread we can eat while fasting?
