Whole Wheat Tortillas for the Daniel Fast
You can buy 100% whole wheat tortillas, but these are so easy and fun to make. Use these tortillas for a veggie wrap or for chips with salsa.
Ingredients:
2 cups whole wheat flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ cup warm water
Preparation:
-
Mix flour and salt in bowl.
-
Add olive oil and stir until well combined.
-
Add warm water 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
-
Knead dough on floured board for about 3 minutes (20 folds).
-
Allow dough to rest for 15 minutes (this is called resting)
-
Roll dough into sausage-shape and then cut into 12 equal parts (cut in half, then in half again, then each part into thirds) and shape into little ball
-
With a rolling pin, roll each little ball into a tortilla (for best results, roll out from the center and outward).
-
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Fry the tortillas in a dry stick-free pan for about 30 seconds on each side for soft tortillas or longer for crisp tortillas.
-
Keep tortillas warm by placing in a tortilla holder or wrap in a kitchen towel
Yield: Makes 12 tortillas
No deep fried foods on the Daniel Fast. This method of cooking is allowed.
These tortillas are fried. I thought there were no fried foods on the Daniel fast???
The egg puts the crackers on the “not allowed” list . . .
Be blessed
Hi Susan,
Chia crackers are made with almond flour, olive oil, chia seeds, and 1 egg baked in. Just curious if these are allowed due to the egg?
Yes, but the full answer depends on the brand you choose. Read the ingredients on the food label to make sure they all comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines.
Be blessed!
Hello, Are we allowed to eat corn tortillas?
Hi Sheila,
Dried fruit is always a challenge to find without any sugar OR additives added, and it varies not only from brand to brand but also from product to product (for instance, one brand may have nothing added into their raisins but then have sweetener or additives added to their dried apricots). Reading the ‘INGREDIENTS’ labels of every dried fruit package is the only way to be sure. Begin with the health food isle in your local grocery store, then you may need to continue your search at a Health Food store, but even there you’ll need to check the Ingredients label for the added natural sugars. I wish I could give more specific information to you. One thing that might help: Citric Acid/Ascorbic acid is a type of vitamin C that is used for a natural preservative. It’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed. Be Blessed!
OOps sorry its me again, while at Trader Joes I was looking at the dried fruit. In the ingredients almost all of them have sugar listed. The only one I found that didnt have sugar in the ingredients was prunes, yeck!!!! I know fruit has its own sugars so In reading the bood it states that dried fruits are exceptable. Is this stating I need to make them myself? Im do not want to make this about food but I do want to adhere a little better this time around, the first time I didnt have the wonderful book.
Hi, I make these in sunny downtown Coffs Harbour in Australia, but I always called them Chapatis. A lot of Indian flat breads (not to mention a lot of their meals) would fit the criteria for the Daniel Fast. And they’re yummy to boot.
one variation I made to the ww tortillas is i used soy milk (Unsweetened, organic) instead of water and it tastes great.
No, you need to look for “Whole Grain” flours for the fast. Be Blessed!
enriched wheat flour is that ok?
Hi Denise,
Ezekiel brand whole grain tortillas are Daniel Fast friendly. Trader Joes carries them fresh, and Most health food stores carries them in their “frozen foods section”. Be Blessed on your Fast!
Has anyone ever found whole wheat tortillas in a store that meet the guidelines? I’ve looked at every wrap and tortilla in my grocery store and at the local Whole Foods store and they all either have yeast, baking powder or baking soda in them.
I REALLY don’t have the time to make my own but would love to have “mexican” type foods!!
Any help?
Jessica,
Yes, you can cook your vegetables, home made soups are a great choice. You can find lots of information about the Daniel Fast on this blog and at my website: http://www.Daniel-Fast.com. You will find all the resources you need for a successsful Daniel Fast. You can also order a copy of the daniel fast guidelines, enter your email address and they will be emailed back to you.
Is is okay to cook your veggie’s like cabbage soup with potatoes and carrots? Are soups allowed?
As i was calling the company to make sure it was whole grain because i wasn’t sure it just said soft white wheat in the ingredients, i realized it was a rising agent and i knew that is not allowed. I just wanted to share in case someone was wondering the same.
Hi Adriana,
Soft white wheat may be okay if the flour is from the whole grain. Processed foods (re-engineered so the whole food value is no long there) are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. So read your label on the flour to make sure the whole grain is included. Otherwise, you will want to use whole wheat.
Hi, I’m excited to make these tortillas…I have 100% whole wheat flour but its soft white wheat is that still ok?
Tortillias are great with peanut butter, banana, raisins and nuts for a breakfast tortillia!!!!!
I just have a couple of practical tips I found helpful in making these tortillas:
1. At least with the whole wheat flour I use (Bob’s Red Mill, 100% whole wheat flour), the tortillas require alot more water than the recipe called for. I just heat some water on the stove for a few seconds, and add until I get the desired consistency. Maybe that’s why some are having trouble rolling them out?
2. I too found the tortillas to be a little small, so I use the measurements in this recipe, but I make 10 tortillas instead of 12. I find this to be a more desirable size (like taco size).
3. Another thing I find helpful is to roll the dough into a “sausage shape” BEFORE I let it rest. It seems to leave less cracks in the dough.
Hi Nicole,
Baking soda is not allowed on the Daniel Fast along with all other leavening products. The Whole Wheat Tortilla recipe uses no leavening, so you can make them. You also might try to find Ezekiel Wraps. I know some of the varieties are consistent with the Daniel Fast Guidelines.
Hi,
not sure if I got the baking soda in the tortilla answercorrectly…are they ok?
Hi Sher,
They should be more pancake size. You have to roll them “with gusto” or use a press to make them larger.
Be blessed!
How big are the tortillas supposed to be I don’t know if I did something wrong but mine were a little bigger than a silver dollar.
Hi Nicole,
I have yet to find prepared tortillas that are not filled with chemicals so I make my own . . . sorry! You might check out a health food store. I think that would be your best chance.
Bless you and your fast.
This recipe is great, but I was also looking at the store today for already made whole-wheat tortillas and I couldn’t find any that were 100% whole-wheat. Do you know of any brands that make 100% whole-wheat tortillas?
Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for your kind words. This web site is a blessing to me and I love communicating with other believers.
I think pancakes sound interesting, but can they be made without leavening? That’s the only issue . . . you might want to experiment. Let me know I am very curious.
Sorry I don’t have a better answer . . . maybe the answer is in our creative approach to this desire! 🙂
What about wheat pancakes? Our youngest (age 7) is not fasting the way we are but it is a great time for the whole family to eat healthier and we have loved the supper conversation about why we are doing this, etc. I would make the pancakes with whole wheat flour and use all natural applesauce and soymilk to mix. This website is by far the best, thank you and Godspeed.
If fasting is about having more time to spend with God, then I won’t be making my own whole wheat tortillas. I’ll buy them already made!
Hi Brenna,
Some people are able to have a pretty easy fasting experience while others still find the restrictions very hard. Remember that the food part of the fast is really the smallest element. The biggest is using this time to consecrate ourselves unto God and spend time honoring Him and seeking His face.
God bless you on your fast!
these are amazing! really good with homemade hummus and roasted veggies. it doesn’t even feel like you are on a fast!
Hi Amy,
White flour is not allowed on the Daniel Fast nor or any processed foods. Whole wheat flour is okay!
Blessings to you on your fast.
I thought that with the daniel fast we were not to have flour was I told wrongly?
That’s good to know. : ) I bet they would be wonderful with grilled asparagus and mushrooms! Yumm…
Hi Bobbi,
The tortillas a fried in a dry skillet. The oil is in the mixture. Also, regarding fried foods, it means deep fried, but light oil with veggies is okay.
Blessings!
I thought we were also supposed to leave fried foods out of our diet… these tortilla’s are fried. Even though they sound very tastey. : )
Is baking powder a part of the Daniel fast? I am not trying to be legalistic with this, but I had left out an entire catagory of recipes that my family normally relies on simply because they used baking powder and I considered it leavening. It may not help much, anyway, because so many of those recipes used honey, too. I just think we could make some of them without the honey. That brings up another clarification–other than fruits, fruit juices and their concentrates, there is really no sweetner available, is there? We have no way to buy stevia before this fast is over.
