I receive a lot of questions about the Daniel Fast and breakfast ideas! When we’re not fasting we’re so used to having dairy products (not allowed on the Daniel Fast), eggs and other animal proteins. So this is a good time to be creative!

Here are some of my favorites . . . you can find many recipes in the Daniel Fast books and cookbooks available at

      Unleavened whole grain breads and crackers like Matzo, Nan, and Indian Roti, and tortillas are allowed. The way to tell a good flat bread or cracker is that the ingredients are very simple, such as: a whole grain flour, salt, oil and water. Be blessed on your Fast!

    Hello Daniel Fast Team:
    I am preparing myself for Daniel fast. Two quick questions:
    1. Are we allowed to take multivitamins during the fast? Multivitamins I refer to are such as Amway Nutrilite Double-X or any other multivitamin brands which usually contain vitamin A, D, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, Folic Acid, etc.
    2. I am still breastfeeding my third son now (he is 15 months old now). Is there any exception for mothers who are breastfeeding during fasting period?

      Yes, read the Ingredients list, we encourage supplements that are free of sweeteners and man-made chemicals.
      We suggest that nursing or pregnant mothers review the Daniel Fast eating plan and then use their wisdom and/or the instructions from their health providers to modify the fast to meet their physical needs. The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat, however since your body has extra demands on it right now you might want to add a little chicken, fish and/or dairy products prepared in Daniel Fast friendly ways. Pay close attention to get plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables.       You can use unsweetened additive free almond milk (or other plant-based milks) during your fast with recipes and on cereal. But, the only drinking beverage on the fast is water . . . Be Blessed on your Fast!

      It’s a fine line, but smoothies are considered a liquid meal and so are allowed on the Daniel Fast. The only beverage is water.

    What can you add to your water to give it a different taste? For example some people add lemon to their water to change the taste. Any other suggestions?

      Yes, as you now a slice or splash of lemon, cucumber slices, a mint leaf. You just need to be careful that your water with flavor does not cross over to become tea or a juice equivalent. I hope this helps!

  8. My son has been on a juice fast – seeking God’s will during a very trying time in his life. I wanted to fast both to support him, and because Jesus said that somethings require both prayer and fasting. I have two life threatening heart conditions and have been concerned about fasting and medical issues. I was thrilled to see oatmeal and dried fruit for breakfast because that is what I eat every day of my life anyhow. I think the rest of the fast will be just fine, but I was really worried about the first meal because that’s when I have to take drugs that need to be taken with food.

    if you have a juicer you can make geat dairy free smoothies, i mix one cup of my home made apple and carrot juice in a blender with 1 banana and sometimes a few berries , get creative with the juice

      Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. All sweeteners are off limits during the Daniel Fast. One thing to keep in mind is that while all foods on the Daniel Fast are natural . . . not all natural foods are acceptable. Honey is one of those.

  11. Greetings. Are portion sizes important? I know prayer is the main focus, however, I do not want to over indulge in eating, as a fast is supposed to leave us a little weak in flesh so the Holy spirit can manifest. Is this truth?

      There are no scriptures in the Daniel Fast that specify the amount of food (portion size) or even number of times per day to eat during the fasting period. However, we need to keep in mind that this is a fast and portion control and the eating sensibly is appropriate. So eating three moderate meals and two snacks a day would be appropriate.
      As far as feeling “weak in the flesh”, this is a confusion of fasting terms (which is tied into a traditional no food fast). The Daniel Fast is a partial fast where food is consumed, However the discipling of the flesh by your spirit does render the flesh silent and under your dominion, so that the spirit being (you) can gain strength and clarity to hear the voice of the Lord more clearly than ever.     I have been on the fast for 1 week, and my blood pressure went from about 160/90 to 120/74. It is amazing. I have so much energy and also lost 8 lbs. The Lord is great and this is a great fast/diet!

      Yes, Whole Oats are fine just watch what you put on top. All nuts (natural) with a little salt is fine too, and dried plantains are fine as long as they are sweetener free and additive free. Be Blessed!

    For breakfast I am having Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Cerial with The Original 8th Continent Soy Milk. I just want to be sure this is staying within the Daniel Fast. I was trying to make sure that the Soy Milk Is ok to be drinking since I can’t find anything on the container saying “unsweetend”

      You just need to make sure to read the Ingredients list on everything for those hidden sweeteners (natural and artificial) and additives. Unsweetened additive free plant based milks (almond, soy, rice, coconut, etc.) are fine for use in recipes and on cereal. Just not as a drinking beverage, water is the only beverage on the fast.   16. Hello. This website was very helpful. I’m the Pastor’s wifw and we have been on the fast for 7 days now. I’m trying to search out inormation for the memebers, for we want to eat the right things and be pleasing in the Lord’s sight. One of the comments I read about sweeteners. If there are products that have natural sugar, ex. peanut butter are you saying that is not ok. I saw the response that natural or added sweeteners were not allowed.

      Naturally derived sugars that are in the food source that you are eating, is the okay kind. The way to tell is it will show on the Nutrition list But not the Ingredients list. Now some peanut butters Do have sugar added in, which is the ones to avoid. So focus on the Ingredients label, this will show you what has and has not been added in. You want a peanut butter with no sweeteners of any kind Added in (natural or artificial). For ex. Adams 100% Natural Peanut butter is fine on the fast, the only Ingredients is Peanuts. But then the Nutrition list shows 1g of sugar, this is Naturally derived from the food source and is fine. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

    Hello Daniel Fast Team,

    You stated that you use West Soy milk because it has only a few ingredients but when I look at the website it lists a lot of ingredients I have no idea what they actually are. It also lists “Vitamin A Palmitate” which you said was a preservative & not allowed. Here are the ingredients from the website for West Soy Vanilla Organic Soymilk: filtered water, organic soymilk (filtered water, whole organic soybeans), organic dehydrated cane juice, tricalcium phosphate, natural vanilla flavor with other natural flavors, sea salt, carrageenan, vitamin E (d-alpha tocopheryl acetate), vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, riboflavin (vitamin B2) All of their milks have these same ingredients as well. Is this ok to have? I would really like to know because I’m currently using Organic Silk Plain Soymilk and would like some Vanilla but it’s hard trying to distinguish what’s natural and what is chemical. Thanks.

    I have found it helpful to make large quantities of brown rice, mixed legumes, and vegie broth It makes it easier to add fresh vegies and then just pop in the microwave. Rice can be used for any meal add some cinnamim, unsweetend almond milk nuts and raisins and you’re good to go. curry powder adds lots of flavor you really dont miss the meat. You always need to add more of your onion garlic etc for meatless dishes

      A glass of water with a slice or splash of lemon in it is perfectly acceptable on the fast. As long as you can in all honesty still call it water and not a glass of juice then you’re fine. Be Blessed on your Fast!

        Thank you. Someone has told me that smoothies and decaf coffee were OK,to drink for breakfast but not as a beverage during the day. Is this correct as you see it. I want stay within what the Daniel Fast offers, but I do not want to dwell on the foods as much as I want to spend time in prayer with God. What do you think?

        Yes you can make smoothies “liquid meals” using fruit and/or vegetables, since smoothies are considered a meal rather than a beverage. Decaffinated coffee and/or tea are not allowed, as water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!!

    • Yes, you can drink protein shakes if all the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast. No sweeteners and only plant-based products. Look for unsweetened soy protein shakes. They should work for you during the fast.

    • Unsweetened soy milk is perfect for the Daniel Fast and I now use it all the time on my cereal. There aren’t many boxed cereals that work for the Daniel Fast, however oatmeal with nuts and dried fruit is easy to make and really good for you. Also, my favorite is muesli, which you can eat hot or cold. I prefer it cooked (only take five minute and is very simple to prepare).

      There is no sweetener of any kind (Natural or Artificial) allowed on the fast, so no honey. Yes, 100% Natural, Unsweetened and additive free peanut butter is allowed. When the sugar grams are listed in the Ingredients list then pass on it. When the sugar grams are listed on the Nutritional list Only then this is naturally derived sugars and is fine on the fast. Adams 100% Natural peanut butter is a good option. Be Blessed!

      Yes, Citric acid is a type of vitamin C that is used for a natural preservative. It’s organic and best when “naturally derived” and is allowed on the fast. Be Blessed!

  31. I want to start the Daniel Fast but for some reason cannot get started. I am not a good meal planner. Even though the menus are listed I fear I will fail. IS this spiritual or lack of skills??? I want to prepare for involvement in an intercessory prayer group by drawing closer to God and I believe this is the way. Where am I going wrong?

      My guess? It’s both, spiritual attack and a lack of skills, the enemy’s tactic is to keep pressure on our weaknesses! So, let’s turn your meal planning weakness into a successful strength! First of all let’s start small, and keep it simple. Plan two days worth of meals, that’s 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and for these two days let’s just have fruit for snacks, banana, apple or oranges. Day 1 – Make up some Old Fashioned Oatmeal (make a double serving) divide a can of peaches saving half for tomorrow, when the oatmeal is ready serve half with peaches on top and save the remainder for tomorrow. Make a pot of meatless Chili the night before, this is Day 1’s lunch and Day 2’s dinner, Day 1’s dinner make a batch of meatless spaghetti sauce with whole grain pasta and a salad and the left over’s can be Day 2’s lunch. As you can see you’ll end up with left over’s stored in the refrigerator for variety, most left over’s do last for more than two meals but I think you get the idea. It will get easier as you go… And Besides…there’s no reason to fear failure, you’ve already failed… by not starting, so you might as well start somewhere, start small, keep it simple and when it doesn’t work the way you hoped it would, it’s Not a failure it’s just time to make some adjustments and keep going! “When you don’t give up..You cannot fail”!       You’ll want to avoid this one and keep looking for different plant based milk, Vitamin A palmitate is a synthetic version of the “vitamin A” that occurs naturally in animal food sources.       Hi Sydney,
      The definition of fasting is to “restrict food” for a spiritual purpose. Since you are limited in your food availability for the fast I encourage you to get a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines, look them over and highlight what’s allowed while matching with what is available in your pantry, and plan your fast accordingly (though a modified version of the fast, this is perfectly acceptable since you are still “restricting food for a spiritual purpose”).
      When reading Ingredients labels the rule of thumb is that the list should be quite short. Ascorbic acid is common to see, it is a vitamin C and used as a preservative. I only buy canned foods that list it as “natural ascorbic acid.” Otherwise, I only buy foods that are free of all artificial chemicals. Most of them are canned in their natural juices or perhaps some salt is added. But no artificial chemicals and no sugar. I sometimes buy canned fruit, but find there are only a few canned in their natural juices. These are usually the “lite” varieties.

  35. My cousin has been on the fast and lost over 40 lbs. however, she sees the spiritual benefits as being much more important. My question is-how do you get enough calcium if you are not drinking dairy or eating meat? I recently learned I needed to take calcium for bone strength. Thanks for your answer. I am considering the fast as part of my spiritual journey to be closer to God.

      Yes, Calcium rich foods are available in abundance on the Daniel Fast, you just need to know where to look. Here are some ideas: Plant based milks (Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, etc.) Sesame Seeds, Flax Seeds, Tofu, Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Green Leafy Vegetables (Turnip, Mustard, and Dandelion Greens, Collards, Kale). And let’s not discount our dried Herbs sprinkled throughout our foods, they do add up. For example: Dried Savory tops the list with 2132mg of calcium per 100g serving (213%RDA), that is 85mg (9% RDA) per tablespoon. It is followed by celery seed with 124mg (12%RDA) of calcium per tablespoon, dried thyme with 57mg (6% RDA) per tblsp, dried dill with 53mg (5% RDA) per tblsp, dried marjoram with 40mg (4%RDA) per tblsp, dried rosemary with 38mg (4% RDA) per tblsp, sage, sisymbrium, oregano, spearmint, parsley, poppy seed, chervil and finally dried basil. If you still question that you’re getting enough calcium in your foods, by all means do consider adding a sweetener/additive free plant based supplement to your regime.       For boxed cereals are the Ezekiel brands and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: Also, there are several others found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores, Muesli, Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Wheat (only whole wheat as the ingredient), and Yes, there is always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal. My son is doing the Daniel Fast for a group requirement for church (for a week) and I’m concerned that he isn’t getting enough food/protein…he is an athlete, 16 years old, 6’8″ and works out and conditions every day for several hours.       Hi Shari,
      You are right to be concerned, and to monitor his foods. First of all, there is no reason why your son should not be getting enough to eat, the Daniel Fast restrictions are not on food quantity, but on the food quality! So, he should still be eating three meals a day with two snacks, and it is safe to stay highly physically active while on the fast. However, you do need to be intentional with your son’s protein intake. You can get plenty of protein in nuts, peanut butter (any nut butter), whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables, you can also add in unsweetened soy (or any plant based) protein powder into a blended fruit/vegetable ‘smoothie’ (make sure all other ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast and watch out for milk products (whey) and sweeteners along with chemical additives). And finally..…depending on how rigorous his physical activity level is, you may need to consider modifying the fast to match his routine by adding in some occasional fish and chicken.
      For Headaches – Have your son Drink Lots of Water! Symptoms of detox or withdrawals are “fatigue, headaches, cramps, and joint pain” to name a few. This is when the body is getting rid of stored up toxins from caffeine, sugar and/or chemical additives. So the more of these toxins you have consumed, the more you have store up in your body, the worse your symptoms may be. The good news is these symptoms will pass in a few days (3-7). Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease the discomfort and speed up the detox process (also, if your sons discomfort is extreme, you may consider giving him some medication to ease his discomfort). As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, i.e.: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water Daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm/cold weather, physical exercise.

      Hi Cutricia,
      It’s all about the ingredients, and How they are prepared! Regular potato chips are not allowed because they have additives in them and are deep fried. So if you can find some that the Ingredients are all Daniel Fast friendly, AND they are baked (no deep fried foods on the fast) then they would be fine, though a hard combination to find. A good Daniel Fast alternative (cracker) that I can recommend to you is Original Triscuits as they are made with whole wheat flour and other ingredients that comply with the Daniel Fast.       Unsweetened plant based milks such as almond milk is fine on the fast, for use in recipes and for on cereals, just not as a drinking beverage (water is the only beverage on the fast). I hope this helps!

      Hi Sherry,
      The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based. The two foundational scriptures for the fast are Daniel 1:12 says, “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, rice and the like are all considered grown from seed.
      Dan. 10:3 – I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks (Daniel was mourning. The custom in that time was that men would wear oils and perfumes in their hair. But since Daniel was mourning, this was not appropriate and therefore he was in a simple and plain dress and hygiene). Because of this, we eat no sweeteners of any kind, no deep fried foods and no fancy desserts. We also don’t use any stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol. That includes eggs too, I hope this helps!

        You can add lemon slices to your water, chew on mint fresh leaves, and/or such on cloves or cinnamon. Sorry . . . this is a bit of a challenge . . . but there are good alternatives!

        I found a pure bottled water that is infused with peppermint. No sugar or sweeteners of any kind.

        So how about adding a drop of peppermint or cinnamon oil to your filtered water?

        There are also mouth washes that keep your breath fresh for 12 hours; Tri-Oral and a few others.

        The fine line is if you can still in total honesty (with yourself) call the beverage water, then it’s acceptable. But as soon as it becomes a flavored drink or tea . . . then it would be outside of the guidelines.

    what about tacos? We love eating refried bean tacos for breakfast whether we’re fasting or not. Just replace flour tortillas with whole wheat tortillas and refry the beans with olive oil instead of vegetable oil.

    Also, I personally love Fruit bowls no matter what time of day it is.

      Hi Suzanne,
      Refried bean tacos are fine, as long as the tortillas are a whole grain, the beans are ‘lighlty fried’. Also, vegetable oil is fine on the fast (Olive oil is best for cold dishes and not heated). And all fruit is allowed on the fast, Yeah fruit bowls! (just make sure there is nothing added in but fruit). Be Blessed on your Fast!

    want to know if it’s ok to get on the computer or watch tv while on a fast not saying that I didn’t spend time in prayer and reading the bible just want to know if its ok to watch a movie on the computer while fasting please let me know email me back

      Yes, it is fine to spend time participating with normal every day activities while on the fast. Just make sure you are having the amount of time in prayer and the word that the Holy Spirit is leading you in. This is a time more than ever to ask for His guidance, listen and obey, in the process you are fine tuning your spiritual ears to hear His voice. Be Blessed in your Fast!
