What About the Daniel Diet?

Daniel Diet or Daniel Fast?

I’ve been teaching and writing about the Daniel Fast since 2007. And you can see by this blog and my website at http://daniel-fast.com that literally millions of men and women from all over the world are learning about this method of spiritual fasting. Many have asked about the Daniel Diet as they see health gurus turn to the prophets way of eating as a good alternative for healthy weight loss.

So here is my take on the Daniel Diet.

First, let me say that biblical fasting is always about restricting food for a spiritual purpose. That’s how the word is defined in both the Hebrew and the Greek. There is always a spiritual component – in fact, it’s the most important element of a fast. However, many people find that the eating plan on the Daniel Fast is very healthy and helpful to their bodies.

If you want to follow an eating plan (without the spiritual life) that is the same as the Daniel Fast program, then that would be a Daniel Diet. There is nothing wrong with that, but be clear that you would not be on a spiritual fast.

I often counsel people who are preparing for the Daniel Fast to be sure to not let their spiritual life be overshadowed by the food restrictions. Fasting is a spiritual discipline. We are entering into a time of prayer and fasting – both linked together in definition.

So if you want to use the Daniel Fast eating plan for health benefits, then technically you would be on The Daniel Diet. You would be following the practices of the prophet by eating in the way that he and his companions did and if you follow the plan as I’ve outlined in on this blog and in my books, you will experience the great benefits of a healthy way of eating.

  1. I wanted to know if Truvia is allowed on the Daniel fast. I read the ingredients and there is no sugar they are erythritol, regiana (stevia leaf extract), natural favors. Made from the leaf noted in parenthesis.

    Hi Lady dI,
I am sorry to tell you, at this point the cookbooks are only available in the eBook version. However, the paperback version of The Daniel Fast: Feed Your Soul, Strengthen Your Spirit, and Renew Your Body has about a 100 pages of recipes in it. I know, not the same but it’s a start in the right direction. And, I will make this suggestion for a paperback version of the cookbooks to the powers that be. Be blessed on your Journey!

    Hi Christine,
The definition of fasting is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose, and is an experience for the whole person – body, soul and spirit. Many people experience vastly improved health during their Daniel Fast since this is such a healthy way to eat. Using the Daniel Fast eating plan for strictly health purposes would be a Daniel Diet rather than a fast. I hope this helps!

I would just like to mention that the “Daniel Diet” is consistent with a whole foods, plant-based nutrition approach as advocated by a number of leading doctors such as Caldwell Esselstyn, John McDougall, Neal Barnard, etc. and which has been shown to be extremely beneficial to people with heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, etc.

    Hi Vicki,
The Daniel Fast is an anointed spiritual discipline for this time. One of the primary benefits of fasting is that you consecrate (separate) yourself unto the Lord for a period of time so that you can better focus on Him. It’s like a ribbon tied around your life for a certain period in which you turn up the heat on your spiritual life. You press into God in a more intense way than what is your normal and listen to what He has to say to you. When fasting, you are posturing yourself for a breakthrough, James 4:8 “Come close to God, and God will come close to you”, Isaiah 30:21 “Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go”, whether to the right or to the left.”
I encourage you to prayerfully press in and do a deeper study on fasting (restricting food for a spiritual purpose). The Holy Spirit loves to teach us not only new levels and depths of who He is, but also about such things as different types of fasting. A good place to start is https://danielfast.wordpress.com/?s=different+types+of+fast In addition, you can go to http://www.daniel-fast.com/ click on Spiritual Life, there is a wealth of spiritual aids to help strengthen, build up and encourage you in your journey. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

    Hi Robin,
Whey is dairy based, and there is no dairy allowed on the fast. However, you can get a plant based protein powder to use, like soy protein powder would be one option. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!
