Daniel Fast – it’s so much more than the food!

I am concerned about a trend that seems to be happening in the Daniel Fast genre. And it has to do with so much attention being put on recipes and cookbooks and what we can eat and what we can’t! The Daniel Fast is so much more than food! And when we keep our focus on the food, it seems it’s just another way to feed the flesh rather than denying it!

Don’t get me wrong, I know we need to have good recipes for the Daniel Fast. After all, this is a partial fast where some foods are restricted and other foods are allowed. But the Daniel Fast is not a plan to merely replace all the foods we enjoy eating all the time with a vegan variety!

With that said, I do believe God is using the Daniel Fast to bring more of His people into a healthy way of feeding the Temple of the Holy Spirit – a temple He has entrusted to our care. And with the health crisis in the United States and other countries in the world, it’s critical that we start eating good foods designed by the Creator for the bodies He created!

But I encourage all those who use the Daniel Fast as their method of fasting to examine your heart as you try to figure out ways to satisfy the flesh by going to great lengths to serve up some alternative.

Again, please don’t misunderstand me. I know we need good recipes. I know it’s okay for us to enjoy the food the Lord created for us. But I also know that we need to keep things in balance and not get our eyes so much on the food that we miss the purpose of fasting. It’s a spiritual experience where we put our whole beings under the submission of the Lord. And I do believe there is a danger in going too far in satisfying the flesh by focusing too much on food and missing out on the vital element of submission that a period of prayer and fasting employs.

  1. Thanks Susan for your encouraging remarks. My sisters and I are preparing mentally for a fast next week. I for one am planning to start with the Daniel fast. I recently had a physical and everything came out fine but I was also encouraged to drop a few pounds, which I know I need to do. I am hoping more so though to break down walls, spiritually through the fast and just grow closer in my own walk with God.

My husband and I are actually going to begin a 7 Daniel fast – In December of last year we did a 21 day Daniel fast and we prayed regularly and we were very specific with our 3 weeks, we had a prayer request for each week and focused on those specific prayers and I want to tell you that GOD GLORIFIED himself – in such an awesome way – on the 3rd day of week one he responded and answered our request we needed confirmation for a decision we were about to make and needed him to ok it before to see if this was in fact HIS will, Fasting and prayer is EFFECTIVE I have never seen God move so fast – Be encouraged and also keep us in your prayers as we also fast.

In our home, we are strictly gluten free because our daughter has Celiac disease, topped off by other dietary and nutritional issues and needs. I find having a variety of recipes and ideas makes it possible to include everyone in on the fast. Matter of fact, I did not think the fast would be good for a diabetic until I realized the combination in which the allowable foods are suggested to used in many of the recipes, (along with the fact that the grains must be whole), keeps blood sugar levels even.

If I were to do this fast on my own or just with my husband, we would probably keep it simple…. Nuts, fruits, veggies, and water. However for a busy mom who is in charge of keeping house, home schooling and all the rest, I am finding that having the recipes gives me a “go to” at times where I am spending too much time focusing on what to serve next instead of in prayer.

I guess you could say my boat rocks both ways on this topic. So you see sister, you don’t stand alone when it comes to this subject.

May God bless you in Jesus name.

Thanks for getting my attention! I came on this web site to try to find a recepie for a dressing for my salad! Like everyone else me to is focusing on the food and not the real purpose.I will regroup and continue my fast, I’m on day 13 and I would like to have more dressing than the Newman’s OWN “OLIVE OIL & VINEGAR” Which is real good but want something else! THANKS AGAIN FOR OPENING MY EYES!

I went to church this morning and they’re starting a Daniel Fast. The message was entirely centered on the physical aspect of losing weight and what kind of food to eat. I was disappointed, but understand that people are at different places. On another note, I’m on day 9 of the fast and feel so privileged to be doing this. God’s voice is clearer and I feel closer to Him. Amen!

  8. Thank you for this word from the L-rd. I needed to hear this.

We received excellent advice from your team about my husband being a Type 2 diabetic, recently discovered. Unfortunately the advice did not work and his sugar dropped drastically 2 times, we sought Holy Spirit and he is doing as He leads. My husband does not fit the profile for a diabetic as told to him by all nurses and the Dr., but we trust G-d and much good has already come from this situation. I said that to say this, if for some reason it does not work for a diabetic, please consult the ultimate Physician. The enemy wants to block your blessings. Do not allow it, we do have a choice. My husband is fasting as instructed and doing just fine now.

I would like to share a G-d given revelation re: fast. Also mentioned in your article was about weight loss and Americans are not exactly in healthy condition. I too, would like to loose weight. G-d made it so clear and simple to me. “When I forgive you of your sins, you intentionally do not go on sinning or you are right back where you started, therefore; forgiveness is required once again. When we do the Daniel Fast for the right reasons, but experiencing a physical cleansing (detoxification) as well as weight loss. If we choose to resume negative food consumption after the fast, we too have lost ground physically and spiritually. My prayer is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” No dieting, but a complete change in eating habits. To all who desire change in this area of your lives we can do this with His help.

    Be encouraged and blessed.

Thank you for you posting! I have been on the Daniel fast for 7 days now, and honestly I have been really focused on food more then the true purpose of the fast. Which is to get closer to GOD and just hear HIS voice. This article was a real eye opener. Thank you for being so honest and allowing GOD to use you in such a way,

  15. Thank you for all your keen (applied) wisdom and insight in regards to doing a 21 day fast.  I would appreciate your feedback in regards to a 21 day fast I’m finally embarking on in obedience to the Lord’s leading.

This is something I know is absolutely critical and necessary for my intimacy with Christ to be where it should be.  I have done 21 day fasts before, but they were partial fasts where I ate the second half of the day.  This time I am feeling lead to take on more drastic measures and become a lot more serious in my pursuit of the Lord.  I don’t necessarily feel led to do a Daniel fast, but am wondering if it would be advised and okay for my health if I did a full fast with the exception to one piece of fruit with my two morning drinks: apple cider vinegar & cayenne pepper drink and green tea, and then do a meal replacement drink (Amazing Meal) in the latter part of the day?  I am btwn 30 & 40 yrs old, am 4’11” and weigh a little over 100 lbs.

Thank you for your post Susan. I just started my Daniel Fast yesterday, after a weekend men’s retreat I felt inspired to seek a closer relationship to God. I feel He has been speaking to me about fasting for a few years now, but my flesh didn’t want to listen. I hope and pray that my focus can remain on the true purpose.

The Daniel Fast is completely plant-based, so no goat or lamb. Here is a powerful video about a women who used the Daniel Fast and was cured of cancer:

Thank you so much for this post. My spirit is so convicted reading this. We are in our final week of this fast and I feel that rather than focusing on God and praying and talking with Him I have been focused on how to prepare different meals that still satisfy my flesh. I may extend my fast beyond my churches 21 days so I can truly focus on the Purpose of the fast versus the Food Preparation of the fast.

I was reading some were that the Daniel Fast could help prevent cancer if you follow the fast like you suppose to. also coulod you eat goat, or lamb.

Thank you! I just started the Daniel fast today and I was concerned ALL DAY yesterday about what I was going to eat. I realize to fast is to sacrifice and hear from God, so, by the end of the day, I felt convicted. I am thankful to God for leading me to your website; to know that I am not alone and to guide me back to the original purpose.

    Hi Alti,
You may modify the length of the fast to what you feel led to do, and there are no stipulations on meal schedules. We actually do recommend three meals a day with two small snacks. Since you are new to the Daniel fast, I would suggest that you order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines. You can do so by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps!

back in the days I know you abstain from food for your entire fast, I am new to this Daniel Fast I have 2 questions? Does it have to be for 21 days? and the foods that are specefied to be eaten, do we have to eat at a specefied time say in the evening, or we can eat those food anytime during the fast?

    Hi Yolanda,
It looks to me like it is part of the ingredgients list, which would mean this sugar has been added and would then not be allowed on the fast.

I am so glad I visited this website today. I have fasted for a day or so with no food, but I have never fasted for 21 days with food choices. My church started this fast on January 9th and this week I have spent so much time concentrating on not eating the wrong thing, I have totally lost focus of the reason we are doing this. Again, thank you!!! God bless you!

That is what my conviction was as I was going to the internet looking for the 21 day fast. I felt in my heart I was looking for a way to satisfy my appetite. The very thing I am trying to loose touch with. I want to desire the Lord as much as I desire buttered toast in the morning with a cup of tea.

Thank you Susan for the reminder also. Just last night my spirit was quickened of too much focus on food. I bought your book for recipes so my husband would join me on this fast. The buying and prep has totally turned my focus away from the purpose. Just like God to be innovated to get my attention thru an email. WOW! That’s my daddy God! Switching focus! Your book Feed Your Soul Strengthen Your Spirit is so annointed. While reading it before I started the fast the peace and excitement was amazing! Then I got off track .

Susan…God truly spoke through on this one. I KNOW that this word was directly for me. I remember last year getting so caught up in the food sacrafice that I neglected the actual purpose of my fast. This year I am committed to spending that quality time God so deserves. I have found this to be true within the last couple of days that his WORD truly nourishes me, and I am not running to find something to eat. I am not where I should be with it all, but thank God I am not where I was! God Bless you for allowing God to speak through you!!!!!!!!!!

  32. I really needed to this as a reminder that I am sacrificing not substituting. I’m doing the Daniel Fast along with my church for the next 3 weeks and yesterday I went a a little over 12hs before I hate– but not with out watching the clock and rushing home to VEG OUT i ate way more then I normal would I wasn’t really even hungry. Because I’m feeding on the Word there’s little stomach pain — It’s easy to forget and focus on food but I need to focus on God and becoming a stronger Christian in the process

Last Sunday I heard a message at church about “Focus”. Through this message I was convicted and saw that I was losing my focus on God and thinking more about what food I was going to prepare and eat. I have chosen to stop trying to prepare meals and I am eating simple fruits and vegetables and an occasional stir fry. It’s not about the food, it’s about seeking the Lord and finding Him.

My sister and I had this conversation a few weeks ago. We were getting caught up in the HOW and WHAT vs. the WHY for our fast. Last year we ate very simply. The simpler the food and prep, the purer this discipline becomes to me. I also
decided to get acquainted with more of His vegetables and fruits, created for us, that I usually overlook in the produce section.

Without a purpose, it’s easy to lose heart and go through the motions. Last year, I dedicated my fast to the Lord for however He chose to bless my year. I was amazed how He showed up for me at just the right time in such beautiful, unexpected ways all year long! This year, I have a specific reaon for focused prayer with fasting, and I know I can trust Him again. With His help, I’m planning to fast the first few days of each month this year.

I started a liquid fast 2 days ago with Jentezen Franklin and his church. I am amazed (though I shouldn’t be!) at how God is satisfying my hunger for food so far! My stomach has only growled 1 time! I decided to fast for 72 hours with liquids only and then 18 days on the daniel diet. I look forward to ordering your book Susan for future fasts. I will be praying for all of you that are on the fast too. God’s Blessings to you all!

THIS IS MY FIRST TIME DOING THE DANIEL FAST. WHEN I REALIZED YOU CAN HAVE CERTAIN FOODS, IT WAS EASIER TO CONCENTRATE ON THE PURPOSE OF ME FASTING. I HAVE ALWAYS DONE THE FASTING WHERE YOU EAT NOTHING AND SOMETIMES THE DEVIL MADE IT A STRUGGLE TO COMPLETE. MY FOCUS IS ON A CERTAIN LOVE ONE AND NOT MYSELF. I KNOW WHEN YOU PUT OTHERS BEFORE YOURSELF, GOD IN RETURN GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED. I AM ENJOYING THE BLOGS. SO ENCOURAGING. LETS CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER.

I started my fast on January 9 with inspiration from Jentzeen Franklin ministries and you also Susan. I agree that trying to find different varieties of vegetables and fruit are somewhat of a challenge. When you get your focus off of food and focus on what you are expecting to receive from God, the fast takes you to another level. Remember the three fold cord (prayer, fasting and giving) during this time. Expect a return on your investment.

Stay focused on your journey. As a young person, it might be a little more tough for you than me. I tell my daughter that everyday!

    Susan,
Thank you sooo much for your post-it’s truly amazing how far off track people can get, when they lose focus. This is my first Daniel Fast, I initially posted @ the beginning of the year. I have no problem with the food aspect because I am presently displaced and don’t have income for food-this is just a fact. I started Fasting on the 9th and have not been “offended” by food. I wasn’t eating much prior. I am homeless and unemployed BUT I am @ peace and happy with the productiveness that has gone on these past few days EVEN weeks because the Spirit of the Lord and I have been together like never. I pray, I read Scriptures and am also enjoying a great novel written by Joyce Meyer-all coupled into my Fast. Making time for God! This is where I am and would never have been had I not made up my mind. Peace- is a lot to say you have. I have always given God my seconds! With nothing left for people and nowhere to turn, He is with me! This is why I thank Him because if God were like people, we would have no one! I am in constant prayer that when I re emerge from this Fast that God will continue to strengthen the work that I’ve been doing on myself since this journey began and that I will continue to use Him in EVERY aspect of my life and He will shine through me! God has shown me that ALL things are possible and that He is my cup. I drink daily and never thirst. With all that has taken place in my life, in only a matter of months, I asked Him. Who else could, or would be willing?
May God continue to bless all who have imparted words of wisdom on this blog, my prayers are with you…

    Stay focused 🙂
