Why No Herbal Tea or 100% Juice!

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive about the Daniel Fast concerns herbal tea. People have a hard time understanding why they can’t have it on the fast, especially if it’s caffeine-free and organic. The same question is asked about fruit and vegetable juice.

The answer is really quite simple and it’s found in Daniel 1:12 where the Prophet’s words are recorded:

“Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.”

This is the anchor text that says we drink only water on the Daniel Fast. Tea and juice aren’t off the list because they are bad for you. They are off the list because there is no room for juice or tea in “drink only water.”

I hope this helps solve some of the confusion as to why  no other beverages are allowed on the Daniel Fast. When you think “beverage” during the Daniel Fast, you think “water.”

Now, let’s move to a little bit of a complicated matter, and that has to do with “juiced fruit and vegetables” that are allowed on the Daniel Fast. The reason they are listed is because many people have meals of juiced produce. It’s not a beverage . . . it’s a meal. One woman wrote to me today and told me she uses juiced meals when she’s traveling and at work.  But she also accompanies the juiced meal with a beverage . . . which is filtered water. So if you are making meal replacements by juicing fruits and vegetables, then they would be acceptable. It’s a fine line. Juice as a beverage is not allowed . . . liquid meals like smoothies and other plant-based protein drinks are okay.

Water has many benefits . . . including thwarting hunger, helping with detox headaches and cleansing the body. The average adult should drink at least 1/2 gallon of filtered water every day. If this is a new practice for you, you will be very surprised by the benefits you experience.

If parsley is accepted does that make parlsey teas bags acceptable? Thanks.

  3. Yes, you are right, Sharon. However there are more and more sweetener-free and chemical-free varieties available. Read the ingredient list on the food label to be sure. My favorite brand of peanut butter is Adam’s. Just peanuts and a little salt.

    Be blessed

I will be relying on nuts for most of my protein during my fast. Legumes have unpleasants side effects for me. 🙂 The blog states that nut butters are ok but most have sweeteners. I assume we should ensure any nut butters we consume are free of sweeteners, correct?

    Hi Chris,
If a couple decides together to abstain from marital relations then you may choose to make this an element of your fasting experience, but it is not a requirement of the Daniel Fast. The Bible teaches that it must be a joint decision. See our FAQ. Be blessed!

Any plant based milk that is unsweetened and additive free is allowed on cereal and to use in recipes.

You mention that you can use soy milk, but that would gag me. Can I put almond milk on my cereal (oat bran) instead, if it’s unsweetened and chemical free?

  10. I know this can be a challenge for your mother’s heart. I encourage you to keep praying and ask God to keep His hand of protection on her as she is being so rebellious. As hard as it is, try to give her up to God and then trust in Him. I am not saying that is easy. I have been through similar struggles. Continue to love her . . . support her in positive ways . . . and be the love of Christ to her. She is blind now . . .

    Be blessed!

  12. You can find whole grain couscous. Otherwise, no as most typical couscous is made from white flour (not allowed on the Daniel Fast).

  13. It’s very likely that you won’t need this type of tea because the Daniel Fast has so much fiber. I encourage you to try the fast (following the plan in the Daniel Fast Book) and see how it works for a few days. This may be your healing for that health issue.

If for some wild reason it doesn’t work . . . then use the tea for a special medical need.

    Be blessed!

    Hi Shoghig,
You need to be intentional with Iron rich foods while on the Fast
    Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
    Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)
Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
And here’s a tip: If you eat iron-rich foods along with foods that provide plenty of vitamin C, your body can better absorb the iron. Add to these foods your healthcare providers instructions and you’ll do fine. Be Blessed!

    Hi Noel,
Yes, the Daniel Fast is like a “Vegetarian…. Plus More Restrictions” way of eating. There’s several things that a vegetarian and even a vegan can eat that are avoided while on the fast…Such as: no sweeteners of any kind, no leavening (yeast, baking powder/soda) and yes this even covers whole grain leavened breads, no caffeine – coffee/teas, no chemical food additives and preservatives. Then there’s the obvious: no animal products, no seafood, no dairy products. As well as, no breads with leavening (yeast, baking soda, or baking powder)… However, only Whole Grain flours etc, Whole grain tortillas/flat breads are allowed (with Daniel Fast friendly ingredients). No caffeine (coffee, tea etc.), Water is the Only drinking beverage. I hope this helps!

    Hi Keith,
Keep in mind we are not trying to recreate the prophets fasting/mourning experiences, but using them as guidelines for a partial fast appropriate for this day and culture.
For a general overview: There are two anchoring scriptures for the Daniel Fast: Daniel 1 and Daniel 10. In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits and foods grown from seed) and drank only water. So from these scriptures we get two of the guidelines for the fast:
    1. Eating only Fruits, Vegetables, Pulse: Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, wheat, rice, fruit, all whole grains (even whole grain flours and pastas) and the like are all considered grown from seed.
    2. Water only for a drinking beverage
Then in Daniel 10 we read that the Prophet ate no meat nor any precious breads or foods and he drank no wine for 21 days. So from this scripture, we get a third guideline:
    3. No sweeteners and no breads
Another important guideline is drawn from Jewish fasting principles, where no leavening is used during the fast. So that’s why yeast, baking powder and the like are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. Finally, with all the above puzzle pieces, we conclude that no artificial or processed foods nor any chemicals are allowed on the Daniel Fast. When asked about the eating plan on the Daniel Fast, I often say it is a “vegan diet with even more restrictions.” Be sure to read the ingredients on labels of prepared foods to make sure they only include Daniel Fast friendly ingredients.
I do encourage you to go into deeper study about the Daniel Fast. If you are interested in learning more about the fast, you might want to get a copy of The Daniel Fast where Susan Gregory goes into great depth about fasting and the Daniel Fast in particular (some recipes are included as well). You also will find a wealth of information about the Daniel Fast on this blog and on my website at All the resources you need for a successful and biblical Daniel Fast are here. If you go to and enter your email address you can order your copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines as well as the Meal Planning Guide, and they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps!

I have one challenge with the “water only” position as it relates to the fast. In Daniel 10, the actual fast, the prophet states that he drank no wine. However, in explaining why it’s water only, the reference used is in Daniel 1 when the prophet and the three Hebrews refused the kings’ meat. That isn’t related to the fast. Now I do believe that restricting beverages, particularly caffeine, sweeteners, etc., is good fasting practice, I don’t see a direct correlation between Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 especially as it relate to herbal teas (which have cleansing properties) and green teas. 100% fruit juices? If you believe that wine was from the fruit of the vine, then perhaps a restriction on grape or other berry juices could be justified more easily than a position against orange, apple, pear, etc.

The Daniel Fast is a type of fast based on the “combined” fasting experiences of the prophet (Daniel 1:12 & 10:3) along with typical Jewish fasting principles. Of which, Susan Gregory has spent years researching the Daniel Fast. The two foundational scriptures for the fast are: Daniel 1:12 “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, wheat, rice, fruit and the like are all considered grown from seed, (also Water only, no dairy/meat).
Dan. 10:3 – “I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks”. I hope this helps.

    Hi Margaret,
Many people with Type 2 diabetes are able to balance their blood sugar levels with the food they eat and can soon eliminate or drastically reduce the meds they take. However, we encourage you to take a copy of the guidelines to your doctor and together plan out the modifications to the eating plan that are needed for your optimal health during your fast.
Malt-O-Meal: I’m not familiar with the ingredients of Malt-O-Meal, it’s all about the Ingredients though, so check them out. Here’s some breakfast ideas for you: Muesli, some varieties of Ezekiel brand and some varieties of Shredded Wheat, ex: There are also several other Daniel fast friendly cereals found in the Natural Foods section of grocery stores or at Health Food stores (make sure to read the ingredients list first though). And…then there’s always good Old Fashioned Oatmeal. An alternative to a cream of wheat (not allowed due to it not being stripped and no longer a whole grain) type hot cereal would be Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Wheat (only whole wheat as the ingredient).
Some additional breakfast ideas are Rice cakes (made with brown rice) with peanut butter and raisins and/or sliced bananas, Fruit/vegetable smoothies with unsweetened plant based milk, Sautéed apples in coconut oil with brown rice, breakfast burritos (wraps) with rice, beans and stir-fried veggies.
You can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. Be BLESSED on your Journey!

Is the Daniel Fast basically a vegan diet? Sans the sweets and juices?

    January 10, 2014
  25. Daniel Fast Team #

    Hi Michelle,
Simply juicing fruits/vegetables get’s into a grey area and could be a bit too close to drinking juice rather than a smoothie as a meal replacement. Blended fruits and vegetables (made more hearty like Smoothies) are considered a “meal replacement” and these are allowed on the Daniel Fast again as a meal replacement. If this is something you are still questioning, I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit for His instruction for what is right for you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your fast!

I was also unsure about honey but my question has been answered. Please help me: In Daniel 1, it says he fasted 10 days, then in Daniel 10, it says he fasted three weeks. Which fast is the Daniel Fast; the one you are you referring to?

    Hi Leah,
Increase your water intake. Fatigue, is a very common symptom of detoxing (from caffeine, sugar and/or chemical additives)… it is a normal side effect of a natural body cleanse through whole foods and water. With that said…Increase your water intake. These symptoms (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) will pass in a few days (3-7)… OR more. The more extreme the buildup of the toxins in your body, the more extreme your symptoms and length of time to complete your detox. Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, physical exercise or Detox. So, drink lot’s of Water! Also, pay close attention to your protein intake and eat plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables, to learn more go to: And, for a quick pick me up snack on fresh fruit. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!
