Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” ——Daniel 10:2, 3

DFfbWelcome! The purpose of this site is to offer valuable and complete information about the Daniel Fast. As the Daniel Fast Blogger, my #1 goal is to help you have a successful fasting experience. More and more Christian men and women are choosing the Daniel Fast as their guideline to enter into the spiritual discipline. While the Daniel Fast is a partial fast, (rather than total abstention from all food) it still provides many of the attributes of denying the self and seeking God.

This blog is designed as a “gathering place” for information and resources about the Daniel Fast to serve those seeking God in this manner. Please “cruise” the blog. Remember, this is a blog format, so you will need to page down to see all the posts. Also, leave comments if you have ideas, questions, or comments.

Also, join our Facebook community! It’s a powerful way to stay connected to others who are seeking God through an extended period of prayer and fasting.

Receive your free newsletter: Just go to our website (where there is even more information about the fast) and submit your name and email address and you will receive recipes, helpful tips and powerful tools to support your fast and your journey with Christ. Click Here

Hi Renee. As for me, I don’t want decaffeinated coffee, because first,I would still feel that I’m having coffe and that’s a no-no with caffeine, and I would not want any brown or raw sugar in it.Forme, now, understand,I said for me,that’s living to close to the edge. My husband says that our fasting should be an attitude of the heart. Take care and God bless you.

Well…Only two more days for us. I have to say that I have never felt better or closer to God. I plan on only adding in a few foods…a little more protein and some dairy but I feel so fantastic and I’ve lost about 10 lbs…my husband lost 25…so we do not want to go back to old habits. We plan on revisiting the fast about every three months. Many thanks for this amazing experience.

If you look up the vegan diet that is pretty much the fast…except no sugar or wheat products. We replaced breads with corn tortillas…you can even cut them into triangles and bake them in the oven to make little chips for hummus and salsa…this is a great snack. We have become really creative with veggies and fruits and have not been hungry…except maybe the first week. You will love how you feel as the days go on. 🙂

Hello and thank you very much Susan,

Like so many others I am a “first-timer”. I listen to AM radio station 1100 in San Antonio, TX and heard one of the local church pastors invite listeners to participate in the Daniel Fast with his church. I have only recently come to know the importance of a personal relationship with my Lord and Savior, although I’ve been baptized nearly 20 years. That said, I have been reading my Bible daily and really having a ball in that time with God, but I’m experiencing some confusion. The biggest mystery is that I’ve only been on the fast for three days, and I’m not eating all that much, but the thing is that I haven’t felt hungry, so I’m not sure if I’ve got clear understanding. I am a full-time student, so each day I’ve taken a small cooler filled with prunes, sunflower seeds, almond, and raisins, apples, oranges, carrots, and grapes, plus my water, of course. Each day, I’ve brought my cooler back home nearly full, because I’m just not that hungry. When I feel like eating, I do, but I’m not sure if I’m supposed to allow myself to feel hungry. Ok, the second BIG problem is that I read the other blogs where people say how they feel closer to God or they pray for things, but I don’t feel like I know how to get the most out of this. Believe me, I have plenty to pray for, but I’ve already been praying, so I don’t know how to make this time matter more, or how to set it apart as special. I’ve read slogans like, “Feed the Spirit, starve the flesh”, but if I’m not feeling all that hungry,…OH! I’m way too analytical!! Ok, let me give you a “for instance”. Like Amy (Aug 09), my husband is not saved, (I believe he has a Catholic background). About three months ago, he left me a note that he was leaving me and the marriage. He’d just separated from Active Duty and had just returned from a year-long deployment; the plan was that he’d start college. He said that he realized while deployed that he was more comfortable alone because he didn’t have to worry about hurting me with some less-than-Godly, but super-worldly behaviors that he’s adopted. I’m pretty devastated and broke and left with all the bills, but I’m slowly making it through with a lot of help from my church and some neighbors. I am not at all ready to give up on our marriage, we’ve got 6 years married and three years of military-style courting. I struggle with wanting what I want (his return to our home) and totally submitting to God’s will (which seems to be that he NOT live with me). What I want from the fasting is to learn to just let go and let God, and really trust Him, to provide me with a job that will cover the bills, to help me learn that God is all I need, but I don’t know how to approach all of that during this time of fasting. Am I supposed to let myself feel hunger sometimes, and then when I feel those pangs, spend the time praying to God, or when I’m eating the allowed foods, should I be praying to Him then while I acknowledge that I am denying myself the normal foods I’d eat? I just don’t know. I have no problem with no TV, phone, and all of that because all of those services have been disconnected, but I just haven’t felt much one way or the other so I’m fearful that I’m messing up. I thank you in advance for your comments, because I can see that you always respond and that’s truly a beautiful thing.
Thank you and God bless you Susan.

I do not have a computer at home and I need a printed copy of this recipe book, how do I get one? I am allergic to yeast, tuna, and have a mild reaction to pinto beans. Strange how I can have everything on the Daniel Diet…

Just a question, I have been really unwell for a year now, at connect the other night, we were discussing the topic of fasting. My leader mentioned the daniel fast, after researching it – i am excited and quite eager. I just have one question – do you recommend someone fasting when they are unwell? As the doctors are coming up with dead ends and I just have this urge to fast for a break through.

    What about Rice Milk?

  10. Doldena #

My question is for a partial danial fast can one include chicken in their meals?

    November 3, 2009
  11. Hi Doldena,

The Daniel Fast is a completely plant-based eating plan (see Daniel 1). So chicken is out. However, I do encourage individuals with special needs to add appropriate amounts of poultry to their meals (for example, nursing or pregnant women).

    I hope this helps!

    November 5, 2009
  12. Yes, unsweetened rice milk is fine on the Daniel Fast. Be sure there are no chemicals, sweeteners or other ingredients that are not allowed on the fast included in the ingredients.

  13. Hi Mara,

The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat and many people receive healings during the fast. However, you will want to check with your physician before you change your diet in a substantial way. You can get a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines at to show to your physician. Or after studying the guidelines you will be able to tell if it’s a major departure.

Also, if you need to slightly alter the fast to meet your health requirements, then that would be okay. The main thing is that you don’t want do anything that will bring you harm. I have great confidence in the Daniel Fast. But you need to be the judge as to whether it’s appropriate for you at this time.

    Be blessed!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I am blessed beyond words to have this ministry. I am so thankful that the Lord gave me this ministry.

    Hi Susan,

First of all, thank you so much for the Daniel fast books, guidelines, and especially for the daily devotional and scriptures.

Is it ok to eat foods when the ingredients list fits under the Daniel Fast guidelines (carrots, black beans, onions, string beans, corn, zucchini, soybeans, oat bran, peas, red pepper, spinach, expeller pressed canola oil, broccoli, textured soy flour, chickpea flour, arrowroot, jalepeno peppers, chili powder, garlic, corn meal, corn starch, cilantro, salt, parsley, black pepper), but a “made in a facility that…” statement lists foods that are not on the fast guidelines list. I just heated up Dr. Praeger’s all natural tex mex veggie burgers and then noticed the statement under the ingredients.

    Help, please.

Also, I finally found and bought soy sauce that doesn’t have any chemicals or preservatives. However, it does list alcohol as an ingredient used to preserve freshness -it’s SAN-J naturally brewed TAMARI premium soy sauce. Is this ok?

    Help here, too please.

  19. I am going to download the ebook right now, but wanted to check in and say a couple of things.
I’m a nutritionist but have been unable to practice my life’s dream due to my own problems with food addictions. It’s terribly discouraging and carries with it many other downward spirals as it (food) is definitely a stronghold that I am ensnared in.
I’ve recently come back to the Lord after ten years of being backslid after a freak accident in church. I’m 52 and feel illness coming on my body quickly – eyesight dimming, digestion sluggish, major aches and pains, sleepless nights, loss of joy, etc., I must make changes now and can only do this with God’s power. I believe my problems with food are spiritual and I believe everything that the Word says – that these only go out with prayer and fasting, that I’m forgiven and redeemed, that by His stripes I WAS healed, that if I humble myself and pray He will hear, and that my body is the temple of God. I desire to glorify God in my body so that I can give others hope – it’s the reason I became a nutritionist in the first place – to give others hope that there is such a thing as health, and that it’s not simply good luck. But right now I feel far from God and the power I need for an abundant life. I anticipate posting my testimony around Christmas that will speak of how the Lord has blessed me as I bless Him during this fast.
Thank you so much for this wonderful service (blog, book, resources). Blessings, peace and love.

  24. Good morning Lillie,

Please go to to learn more about the fast. Also, you can check out my new book that Tyndale Publishing House will soon release by going to this site: The Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory

The great news about the Daniel Fast is that you can eat very inexpensively if you focus on whole grains, legumes and fruits and vegetables. I can easily feed a family of four for less than $10 on the Daniel Fast!

    December 9, 2009
  25. Good morning Michelle,

Yes, you can eat 100% peanut butter (and other nut butters). Just make sure your read the ingredient label to make sure there are not sweeteners added. The same goes for canned foods – READ THE LABEL to make sure there are not added ingredients that are not allowed on the Daniel Fast (sweeteners and chemicals are the common culprits).

I encourage you to get a copy of The Daniel Fast Guidelines here:

Hi Susan! I enjoy your web site very much. For a few months now, it has been coming to me over and over that I needed to give up coffee for a while. They prayed for me at church last night and I determined in my heart right then that I was going to follow through with it this time. It’s only been a few hours since I have had any coffee and I already have a headache but I know it will get better in a few days. I’ve been drinking alot of water like I have read on here to do. That’s really helping. I like reading the posts on here because it gives me encouragement. Are you going to do a Daniel Fast after the first of the year? I’ve never done a Daniel Fast before though I’ve wanted to for a while now. I’m thinking that the Lord may be preparing me for that and maybe the first part is giving up coffee. I don’t want any strongholds on me and coffee and sugary foods are. But I am determined to do this because I’m tired of not obeying God and feeling terrible afterward! There’s nothing like the peace of God when you’re in His will. May God bless you and I’m glad I found this web site.

    Thank you,

    December 9, 2009
  27. Hi Jennifer,

Bless you for tackling coffee! And it’s very possible that the Lord is calling you to a deeper relationship with Him through prayer and fasting.

Yes, I will start the New Year with prayer and fasting using the Daniel Fast as my method of the long-term fast. I will start at sundown on Sunday, January 3rd and continue for 21 days. I like the New Year as it’s like a fresh slate and a new beginning.

I encourage you to go to to get more information about the fast. Join the mailing list to keep in touch!

    Be blessed, dear one!

  28. Hi Alice,

I am so glad you like the complimentary devotionals I send to those on the mailing list! I get lots of good comments about them and I am touched that they bless God’s people.

My prayer for you is that the fast will serve as an excellent spiritual tool for you as you continue to grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

    Be blessed, dear one!

Can I adapt that Daniel fast and use it for my church groups?

    December 17, 2009
  33. Hi Margerita,

Many groups (even whole churches) join together on the Daniel Fast as well as tens of thousands of individuals. You and your church groups will be wonderfully blessed as you seek God through the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting.

    December 18, 2009
  34. The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water, however you can use fruit juices in recipes.

All soy products are allowed as long as the prepared soy products don’t include ingredients that are not allowed on the Daniel Fast – go to to get a list of foods that are and are not allowed.

    Be blessed!
