Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” ——Daniel 10:2, 3

DFfbWelcome! The purpose of this site is to offer valuable and complete information about the Daniel Fast. As the Daniel Fast Blogger, my #1 goal is to help you have a successful fasting experience. More and more Christian men and women are choosing the Daniel Fast as their guideline to enter into the spiritual discipline. While the Daniel Fast is a partial fast, (rather than total abstention from all food) it still provides many of the attributes of denying the self and seeking God.

This blog is designed as a “gathering place” for information and resources about the Daniel Fast to serve those seeking God in this manner. Please “cruise” the blog. Remember, this is a blog format, so you will need to page down to see all the posts. Also, leave comments if you have ideas, questions, or comments.

Hi I just kind of started a Daniel fast with some friends and it is supposed to be 21 days long. This will be my first fast. This fast seems very hard to stick to and I get very confused about what I can and cannot eat. I want to do this right and I feel I may have done it wrong so far. I a wondering if I can restart the fast after I am more educated about it and will not be so confused. I do not want God to be displeased with me if I stop now but this is day 3 for me and I feel I havent started yet because I feel I may have done it wrong with my being unsure. i know that fasting is the answer to my dilemma and I want to do it right. What should I do?

These are the foods I have eaten:
Day1- Dole grapefruit juice, french onion sunchips, and vegetable wheat thins
Day2-Orange,some salad with a little ranch, and honey nut cherrios with skim milk (yes i am aware that this is dairy, I should have gotten soy milk but I thought what s the difference) and cantaloupe and honeydew this is basically all i have eaten on day two
Day3-so far i have eaten honey nut cherrios with soy milk and i ate some cantaloupe and honeydew

If I have it right so far, I will continue. If not, I want to educate myself more and start over because I need some blessings only fasting can bring.

    Thank you for reading this,
    Tanisha

Thanks Susan for your wonderful devotionals, recipes and encourangement while I was on the Daniel Fast.It was my first Daniel Fast. I have got so many complements on my looks. I’m wondering why. But as I thought about it, I have been seeking the Lord more dilegently, the diet changed my hair making it healthier looking, my complection has improved and my outlook on life is better. I did loose weight but it was only the weight I gained in the later part of last year.
I am going to incorporate the things I learned on the Daniel fast in my every day habit which encludes, eating healthier, seeking God more and just enjoying everyday.
Many around me are having real difficulties but I can have peace enough to help and encourage them.
I have become a deaconess in my church and a Stephen’s Minister which I feel more confident about now that I’ve sought the Lord’s will. My attitude is “Yes, I can do it with God’s help” whatever it is.
    Missing your Devotionals emails.
Thanks again and my God Bless You and Keep You in His Care,
    Pat from Willington, CT

Thanks Susan for your great blog, your Email messages. I am finishing my fast tomorrow and I really enjoyed the recipes. May I suggest using spaghetti squash rather than real spaghetti, Spaghetti squash is very good with tomato sauces and other sauces. A friend has given me your book to read and I have made some of the recipes, very good. Makes fasting easy.
    Bless you in your Ministry.

I love hearing about how He is working in the Body of Christ as men, women and young people seek more of Him.

Thank you for your lovely message.

  10. Hi Brenda,

There are no restrictions as to when or how much one can eat on the Daniel Fast as there is nothing in the Scripture about that. However, it’s good to keep in mind that we are fasting. So I suggest no more than three moderate meals and two small snacks each day.

    I hope this helps.

  11. Hi Honey Lynn,

The early texts (translated from the Hebrew) use the word pulse, which is food grown from seed. Therefore, vegetables, fruits and whole grains are at the center of the Daniel Fast.

    Be blessed, dear one!

  12. Hi Sharon,

Welcome to fasting, my dear! The first few days can be difficult as you are experiencing.

I encourage you to plan meals and snacks so you have good foods easily and readily available. Also, consider focusing on developing the spiritual fruit of self-control. I find this a helpful way to deal with the temptations.

    Be blessed, dear one!

    February 7, 2010
  13. Hi Katrina,

The early texts use the word “pulse,” which is food grown from seed. Therefore fruit, vegetables and whole grains are the center of the Daniel Fast. Leavened bread is not allowed on the Daniel Fast, however flat bread is acceptable (i.e. matzo). Finally, this is not an “eat as Daniel ate” fast. It’s a fast based on the fasting experiences of the prophet as described in Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 along with typical Jewish fasting principles.

With all that said, if the Lord leads you to restrict your diet to only vegetables and water, then I am sure you will be blessed. He is so good and He is sure to lead us as we put our trust in Him.

    Be blessed on your fast.

  14. Hello Ida,

My guess is that the chips would be deep fried, making them unsuitable for the Daniel Fast. Many people make their own corn chips by purchasing corn tortillas at Mexican grocery stores and then baking them.

    Be blessed!

  15. Hi Elaine,

Some of the flavored rice cakes may be okay, but you’ll need to read the ingredients and compare them with the Daniel Fast Guidelines which you can get at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com. For sure the parmesan is not allowed since that would be dairy.

    Be blessed.

  16. Hi Phyllis,

This seems to be a common symptom from caffeine withdrawal. Drink at least 1/2 gallon of filtered water each day. The cramps should end after a few days.

    Be blessed.

  17. Hi Heather,

Thanks for your message and your kind comments.

The reason water is the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is because of Daniel 1 where we learn that the prophet and his companions ate only pulse (food grown from seed) and drank only water. So that’s why it is the only beverage on the Daniel Fast.

A great lesson we can learn when we struggle with these kinds of restrictions is to ask ourselves “why we want the juice or tea or whatever.” It can serve as a tool for growth.

    Be blessed on your fast.

    Hi Susan,

I have recently been introduced to te Daniel Fast and I find I am being drawn to it but I do have some questions. Regarding beverages, I don’t understand being allowed fruit but not fruit juice on the fast. If we are eating a fruit, we are ingesting the skin, pulp and juice. What is the difference between ingesting the juice out of glass vs out of a dish or out of hand? I also don’t understand not being able to have herbal teas… same confusion – if we can use herbs on our food, why not also mixed with hot water? I understand that there must be rules on the Daniel Fast, and I completely understand why the food choices are fruits and vegetable and whole grains. But I don’t understand the rule about how they are prepared and ingested; if they are on the list of approved foods and will all end up in the stomach no matter the form they were taken in, how is that an issue? I guess I am a little concerned about becoming too legalistic with this fast, altho again, I do understand the rules for the food choices, just not the rules about how they are prepared and ingested. Thanks so much for your commitment to speading the word about the Daniel Fast. I know God is and will continue to bless this powerful ministry!

I am into my 4th day of the fast and noticed some cramping/aching in my legs on yesterday and today it’s even more severe.

Has anyone ever experienced this while on the fast?
Thanks in advanced for your feedback.

Is it ok to eat the flavored “riceworks gourmet brown rice crisps” such as the salsa fresca and the parmesan&sundried tomato? I enjoy eating the regular one with just the sea salt but these have autolyzed yeast extract and some other stuff. Thank you for giving such spirit filled information.

I recently went on the Daniel fast for 3 days, we were going to court in a custody battle with 2 of my grandaughters. I called a fast asking family and friends to fast and pray with me that we would get to keep the girls. My daughter had 2 Crystal Meth charges pending from last year, she went back to jail in Oct. for a prescription drug. She was released 3 weeks later and those charges were dropped but in the process of her being in jail the dad of the 2 girls came and got them from me. It took a court order to get them back, he filed for sole custody of the 2 girls ( ages 11 and 12). He had not been involed in their life since 2001, in 9 years he may have seen them 5 or 6 times. He thought he had an open and closed case. Those girls did not want to go with him. One is on SSI for a disability and he had the check switched to his name and started getting the check in Dec., I knew this was about money around $1100.00/month. The girls did not like his new wife and felt like they were with strangers. We went to court on the 28th of January and my daughter was awared custody again. God answered our prayers. She is going to drug court and we are praying for a full recovery for her and other family members. The Daniel fast will be a part of my life from now on. God took a situation that seemed impossible and made a way for us to keep the girls. The judge said ” Sometimes it is not my job to give the children to the best parent sometimes it is my job to give the children to the least worst parent”. Just thought I’d share my testimony with all of you. My daughter is in now in drug court and I will continue to fast and pray for her. She has been clean for a little while now and I’am beleiving God will give us our daugther back the daughter that was raised in church and loved her girls more than life itself.

Am thinking of using the Daniel Fast , but can’t find any portions or serving sizes, ie. rice cakes, crackers, nuts, etc? Can I only get this from the cookbook Thanks

    February 3, 2010
  24. Why would you think that fruit or bread is allowable on a Daniel fast?
The scripture is clear- it is vegetables and water. It is clear it is no desireable food. Fruit, which is not a desert/delicacy today- would most certainly have been so in that time period and spices like salt and pepper would of been rare and rich in that era.

This is too funny that I had to share:

We went to an after church, lunch-meeting today and my husband and I brought our own veggie and brown rice stir fry and fruit salad for our meal. When someone made a comment about us bringing our own food my husband replied…”yeah, we’re dong the Daniel ‘Feast’ right now.” His slip up was so funny but we do feel we are really eating well feasting on fruits and veggies, nuts, and beans & rice. Upon my correction he explained what the Daniel Fast was all about.

This a very doable fast and I really appreciate your recipes in the book as well as the website. Half of our family memebers (2 of 4) were already vegetarians so I’ve gotten several more ideas for meals even after our fast of 21 days is over. Thank you.

Hi Susan ~ I want to thank you so much for encouraging us with the devotionals and the shared recipes. I have just finished my 14th day and I am really enjoying the fast. I love the focus on prayer and am sensing God in new and vibrant ways every day. I have taken every opportunity to worship him but also to pray for the needs I am hearing about. I have also taken this opportunity to pray for Haiti and the pain and suffering of our sisters and brothers there. I am truly amazed how God is helping me not to focus on the food and what the next meal will be but to keep my focus on Him. Thank you again for providing this site and the continued encouragement. May you be blesssed!

I wanted to thank you for your blog! I am finding it very very helpful and useful as I am starting Feb.1st with the fast. I am more encouraged now that I found your site with the support, recipes and spiritual guidance. I didn’t know how to start and I initially had somewhat of a purpose in doing the fast, but your advise and words of wisdom/knowledge has really been a great guide for me. Thank you again for your help! Sincerely, angie

Thank you, Susan for all you support. Your recent email, “Desires of Your Heart” was so wonderful and clarifying.
I am in the second week of Beth Moore’s Daniel study and since the very first day I have felt under such attack by Satan. It has been one trauma after another. All Satan has accomplished in his attacks has been to drive me deeper in my studies and on my knees in prayer and closer to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
    Thank you for being here.

All whole grains are allowed on the Daniel Fast. BTW, whole grains are great for bringing down cholesterol.

  32. The Daniel Fast doens’t really have any restrictions for how much or when to eat. However, it is a fast! So I encourage people to eat no more than three moderate meals and two small snacks each day.

The post from Kelly really touched my heart. I have truly
learned so much about listening to God and about myself
this past two weeks. I had heard Jentzen Franklin speak
about “king stomach” and now I am trying so hard to
have the self control that God shows me during this that I
need. If, I can’t control my stomach then, what can I
control? Certainly, nothing within myself, but I can with
help from the Holy Spirit. It is wonderful when the light
of God comes on inside and these things are revealed.
God Bless You Susan for your wonderful work.

    January 16, 2010
  40. Hard to eat out on the Daniel Fast, but you might try a baked potatoe with olive oil and salsa and a green salad with oil and vinegar.

Many restaurants serve vegetarian meals, but those often include cheese, eggs and/or sweeteners.
