Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” ——Daniel 10:2, 3

DFfbWelcome! The purpose of this site is to offer valuable and complete information about the Daniel Fast. As the Daniel Fast Blogger, my #1 goal is to help you have a successful fasting experience. More and more Christian men and women are choosing the Daniel Fast as their guideline to enter into the spiritual discipline. While the Daniel Fast is a partial fast, (rather than total abstention from all food) it still provides many of the attributes of denying the self and seeking God.

This blog is designed as a “gathering place” for information and resources about the Daniel Fast to serve those seeking God in this manner. Please “cruise” the blog. Remember, this is a blog format, so you will need to page down to see all the posts. Also, leave comments if you have ideas, questions, or comments.

Also, join our Facebook community! It’s a powerful way to stay connected to others who are seeking God through an extended period of prayer and fasting.

  1. Hi Sarai,

This sounds like a great option . . . but there is a fine line. As long as you can drink the beverage and still honestly call it water, then that would be acceptable. But if the beverage crosses over in the tea realm, then it would not. It might seem like a fine line, but I think these kinds of issues mirror those we experience in our life of faith. For example, is a “white lie” okay . . . or is a little harbored resentment allowed if we don’t talk about it?

    Something to think about . . .

  2. Hi Amy,

Yes, corn oil is okay, but there are other healthier oils such as olive oil or canola. Masa de herina is also allowed.

    Be blessed on your fast!

  3. Hi Carlee,

Seems the Lord is speaking to you even as you prepare for the Daniel Fast. Ask the Lord to speak to you through His Holy Spirit as to the purpose for your fast, but also remember that it’s okay to have questions and seek God’s direction. So if you have matters that you want to present to the Lord during your fast, that is totally okay!

    Be blessed!

Hello everyone, well going into this fast I find myself facing many questions and many temptations. Just yesterday, as I was originally going to begin my fast I still had questions about it such as if it were only a vegetarian or vegan fast? Because, I’m already a veggie eater (vegetarian) so if it was I wanted to push myself the extra mile and go for being vegan but now that I know it’s vegan that’s a good thing. I also find myself going into this fast wanting to fast for more than one thing besides not wanting my own agenda but His so, that His Will may be done. So, I think I’m going to re begin this fast with all of my meal plans prepared ahead and know what I’m fasting for.

Hello, I have enjoyed reading the blog and getting different ideas. I wanted to share this “water” drink, hope it’s ok. Water, cucumber slices, lemon slices, mint leaves and ginger root (graded). It’s so wonderful and fresh! God bless!

There are several Daniel fast recipes on some sites that include vegetable broth and soy/rice milk. However soy/rice milk and all veggie broths contain sugar in it, which is not allowed in the Daniel fast. I wanted to know if people are considering an exception in this case, and if these ingrediants should be excluded all together. Thanks!

First of all, I Praise and Thank God for you and for the ministry that he has given you! Question for you….I’m participating in the daniel fast for lent, so I was wondering what suggestions you might have for returning to normal eating when the time comes? My wife can’t participate right now and some of the foods she eats currently disgust me…, and they’re not even unhealthy! Thanks!

First, I want to say this Blog is excellent…lots of good information! Next, I ordered your book last week and have been reading the ebook until the hardcopy arrives (can hardly wait). The Daniel Fast is just what I have been needing to re-dedicate myself to Christ. I am using this period as a time of regenration, prayer, and meditation. God bless you and please keep up the good work and I will definitely recommend your book to all.

  19. Hi Courtney,

This is one of the READ THE LABEL responses. If the ingredients listed on the label comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines, then the seasoning would be fine. You can get a copy of the Guidelines at

  20. Hi Tanisha,

You can go to and get a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines. This will help you with understanding which foods you can eat and those to avoid.

You don’t need to start the fast again . . . but just as in our lives with God, we can repent (change) and now that we know what is right . . . do it.

You are fine, dear one. Just use this as a great learning experience!

  21. Dear Heather,

God knows your heart . . . I encourage you to examine it and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

  22. Hi Mindy,

The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water . . . so if you are drinking a beverage with the vegetable juice, then it would be out. On the other hand, if this is a liquid meal – then it would be okay. I know this might seem like a fine line, but to comply with the Scriptures, that’s the division.

    I hope this helps.

  23. Hi Joette,

There is a lot of bad press out about soybeans. Buy your products from reputable producers and go organic. Genetically engineered food is more common than most people realize. That’s why we need to pay attention to what we consume. They have been altered by humans to improve yields.

I wouldn’t discount soybeans, but rather look for good products.

  25. Hi Jerry,

The Daniel Fast is for the whole person – spirit, soul and body. Most people lose between 10 and 25 pounds on the Daniel Fast if they eat balanced meals (stay away from nuts, dried fruit and limit fruits with a lot of sugar like grapes and apples). The other great thing about the Daniel Fast is that people break food addictions and learn they can live without all the junk food and sugary foods that are so popular today.

    I hope this helps!

  26. Hi Rose,

The Daniel Fast is a very health way to eat and by day 7 people feel a great sense of well-being and increased energy. However the fast you are on is different. So it’s hard for me to give advice . . .

You might still be suffering from caffeine withdrawal or reacting to some of the foods you are eating . . .

Also, since you’re only eating after sundown, your body may be resisting this change.

    Sorry I can’t be of more help . . .

  27. Dearest Cat,

Thank you so much for your lovely messages. I am encouraged by them! And what a wonderful confirmation for the Lord through your daughter. He is so good.

It would be so good of everyone would approach the fast the way you do. That’s why I wrote a section in the paperback book The Daniel Fast about preparation.

Be blessed on your fast . . . and I encourage you to join the mailing list to receive even more information and encouragement for your fast! Just to go

  28. Dearest Ester,

Praise God for the work He has done in you! He is so good and you serve as a witness to the goodness of God.

I think one truth that many overlook is that the Holy Spirit joins us when we focus our attention to the things of our Father. Oh, there is so much the living God inside of us can perform as we give way to Him and His Spirit in us.

Thanks for you kind and ecouraging words, dear one! They blessed my heart!

Dear Susan, I want to thank you for your words each day that helped overcome this dark season in my life. I made several Daniel Fast in the past and I desired join in with you but I could not. Darkness, and weakness came upon me and I was forced to eat regularly but… I fasted with you in a different manner. I fasted in opening my heart to people, daring to trust and allowing them helping me! The result is absolutely fabulous and I rejoice, once again in my element, to follow your precious experiences with Daniel’s Fast! Thank you so much, Susan, I surely dearly love you. Shalom, Shalom, Ester.

I forgot to mention that my confirmation was given to me through my daughter. She came up to me the night before last, as I was debating with myself about fasting and she said, “Mami, I want to fast. If our pastor is doing it, then I can too.” And that was my defining moment.

By the way thank you for your insight on fasting with a purpose and the preparation. As I was reading thoroughly through your site, I took my Bible and as I meditated on those words, “What is your greatest need right now?” I prayed and the Holy Spirit drew me to a specific scripture. I just wanted to be able to encourage you, as you have encouraged me that God, my God wants to speak to me during this intimate period. What a way to plant seeds.

    Thanks again!

    Hello Susan,

Wow!! I just went through A WHOLE BUNCH of posts from the beginning and oh my goodness. You definitely have patience. I am beginning the Daniel Fast on Monday with my 14 year old daughter. I had been struggling with fasting, because I had been struggling with my weight and eating habits. I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t just because I wanted to lose weight. I realize that my eating alone has become a sin, well because I could eat all day if I didn’t feel that my husband or kids would see me. I am not extremely overweight, but enough that I am not happy with myself.

At any rate, I had done the Daniel Fast before, all though in actuality it was not with the specifics that I have read on your site. So thank you for all of your information, knowledge, and wisdom…which I know you give God all the glory for, because it’s done with precision.

I won’t ask you any questions about the food that is allowed or what liquid should be drank, because I got it…READ THE LABEL. Thank you and be blessed as the Lord, Father God allows you to continue in this ministry.

    In Him,

O I started a partial 21 day fast last week yesterday was day seven. Thank GOD! .I am staying to fruits and veggies ( salad, fruits cooked spinach etc) and water and juice.usually eating only after sunset. I just felt a great desire to fast. I need insight.. what is could the nausea be a sign of.. should i not have eaten.. do i need to be more active i don’t know. I managed through the headaches from the first three days. But this feeling of being tired like i do when i have a cold and Nauseous and gasy is not cool. Please pray for me and send advice.

This is a fast I would like to try to over come my cravings for certain food but also to lose weight.
I have not been able to find any comments where people are losing weight while growing closer to God.
I was told this is a weight loss fast as well.
Can you please let me know if I have been given wrong information concerning the weight loss on this fast?

I am beginning the daniel fast today february 17th, 2010. I am so used to doing things my way . However, I am really in a position to hear the Lord’s voice. Is it good to exercise while on the Daniel fast i want to continue for the next 21 days. I am doing this fast on my own, no friends to help me. so if there is anyone out there just starting the fast, we can pray and encourage one another by email. Any pointers or tips as I start the fast…..I am excited and encouraged in Christ

I am very excited, I have been led by the spirit to do the Daniel’s Fast for Lenten season 2010. Fear ( not of God) has stopped me in past years, but I am trusting God for renewal of my spiritual and physical body, I need cleansing, I feel disconnected. Please pray for me as I start this journey in the morning.

I have read that soy beans are genetically engineered. Just how bad is this and is there something I can use in place of tofu, soy milk, etc.

  38. I have a morning routine. First thing in the morning I have two tall glasses of water with fresh squeezed lime juice, then I have a 8-12 oz. glass of vegetable juice with my vitamin. The vegetable juice is fresh and processed in my juicer, with carrots, celery and parsley no other additives but a multi-vitamin. Is this acceptable under the Daniel-fast? The fasting plan I can follow. Thank you for your response.

Hi All – I’ve spent the last week reading the book, The Daniel Fast, and all morning studying recipes and menus. I plan to start my fast tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, as a sweet reminder to myself that I am loved by my Creator, and this type of eating is exactly what he has in mind for me to do.

I’m pretty sure you’ll recognize me if you see me in the grocery store – I’ll be the one skipping down the aisles!

    Hi Susan,

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I am not sure you really understood my questions tho. I have seen this answer to other similar questions, but I think the source of mine is a little different. I am not concerned that I cannot go without herbal teas or juices, or even coffee, or that I particularily want them; nor am I wanting to rebel against the restrictions. I am only concerned that the restrictions are truly Biblically based and not man-made (legalism). Since these beverages would still fall within the restrictions of “food grown from seed”, and eating as Daniel did, I am not yet convinced this rule comes from a Biblical source. I realize it is recorded that Daniel only drank water but he probably didn’t have a juicer or dried herbs for tea on hand either!

As the Fast is “based on” and “modeled after” how and what Daniel ate I am not yet convinced that the beverages of food grown from seed are outside these restrictions. If Daniel were fasting today perhaps he would have taken in these foods in other forms as they were all still from seed. We just don’t know. We would be allowed to eat fruits and vegetables he would not necessarily have had access to, because the Fast is only “based on”, but not identical to eating as Daniel ate, correct? I hope you understand where these questions are coming from!

I am not trying to be difficult or argumentative. But this fast is a very important spiritual step for me, and I feel strongly the need to be absolutely sure every aspect of it is Biblical and nothing man-made. At this point I would feel quite comfortable proceeding with the fast including these beverages, more so than if I were to exclude them based on your answer.

I have another question; do you believe that the food grown from seed we are to eat needs to be organic? I don’t remember seeing that question on your blog.

I apologize for the length of this post, and I realize it is not possible for you to go into depth with every question. I would certainly appreciate you taking a second look at these questions tho if you are able to do that.

Thank you again for allowing yourself to be so powerfully used by God to open people’s eyes to this subject of fasting. Mine are far wider now than they ever were before!
