Food List

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” Daniel 10:2, 3

One of the great things about the Daniel Fast is that you are not limited to any specific amount of food, but rather to the kinds of food you can eat. The Daniel Fast is limited to vegetables (includes fruits) and water.

If you want a print out of this list in brochure form to use yourself or share with others, please visit www.Daniel-Fast.com

The Daniel Fast – available at all local and online bookstores.

Special Note: if you have health issues, please be sure to contact your health professional for advice before committing to any fast including the Daniel Fast. If you would like a list of the foods included and excluded in the Daniel Fast to show your doctor, just copy the contents of this page. Also, if you are interested in a collection of recipes that will take you through an entire 21-day Daniel fast, click here.

After answering hundreds of questions about the Daniel Fast, I am updating the food guidelines. My hope is that it will serve as a more complete list. The original list used by many people was issued in a book about fasting. I know the author tried to do the best he could, but that isn’t the same as getting hundreds of questions seeking clarification. So here is the new list that I hope helps.

Please make sure to READ THE LABEL when purchasing packaged, canned or bottled foods. They should be sugar-free and chemical-free. Keep this in mind as you review this list of acceptable foods.

Can I used vinegar during the Daniel fast??

  8. Started the Daniel fast on Feb 1 after the Lord told me to do this fast. As it would be, my nutritionist that I’m seeing now 4 months tells me that it is a good time. My body needs the nurishment of this style of eating. I’m a little overwhelmed as I am a meat eater in a moderate way and love eggs and such. So, God willing, and I’m obedient we will see what God will do for my health and sprit throuth this time. Thanks for thist site, it has been beneficial to me.

    Blessings to all.

I have been trying to eat more healthy and wanted to throw out some basic thoughts that have helped me. These are some of the things that are regular stand-by’s for me:

Make big batches of brown rice cooked w/ olive oil and kosher or sea salt, serve w/ veggies, Bragg’s amino acids (a much healthier and tastier version of soy sauce)
Puffed Brown Rice cereal with unsweetened soy or rice milk
    Cooked Millet
Cooked quinoa with olive oil, your choice of veggies (frozen peas, carrots, onion, french green beans) and cilantro
Old-fashioned Oatmeal cooked with unsweetened rice milk, cinnamon and raisins or other fruits
Brown Rice Pasta with homemade marinara sauce: saute a couple cloves of sliced garlic just until browned on medium heat in olive oil. Add one or two big cans crushed tomatoes, a half a can of tomato paste, you can add basil and kosher salt to taste. You can also throw in a cut up tomato.

If you bake sliced potatoes for french fries, you can toss them w/ some cumin and/or dill, plus Bragg’s aminos (healthy soy sauce) before you cook them.

One thing I have recently learned is, you don’t necessarily need a recipe to eat healthily. Just make sure and throw a pot of rice, millet or quinoa or one of the approved grains, on the stove and try to keep the veggies, fruits, dried fruits and nuts stocked. (herbs help too) just experiment.

I just wanted to say that this website is confirmation for me that I am doing what God wants me to do. Without me knowing, God was preparing me to fast up to 2 weeks ago. I was wondering why i bought that soy milk. lol I just want to thank you for your time and effort to keep this website going. I cant tell you how many message boards I have looked at whose last entry was over a year ago!

My question is about smoking. I think I already know the answer but should quitting smoking be included in the fast? It seems pretty weird to fast from certain pleasurable food yet still getting pleasure from other things such as smoking and sex. I apologize to anybody who may be offended by my question but I am trying to change but everytime I get caught up in the details of everything about me I need to change it becomes too much and I end up failing. Please tell me your thoughts. Thanks.

    Hello,
So I am planning to start the Daniel Fast soon. Would Naked juice be allowed in this fast because according to the ingredients, there is no added sugar or preservatives? I know that water is the only beverage that is allowed but since Naked juice is 100% juice, would it be an exception? Thank you.

Well i just finished up the Daniel Fast on January 30, 2011. This is my third year for the fast and i find each time it is different. The challenges of doing without seem to differ from year to year. This year the third week seem to be the toughest. I was very proud to say my detox process wasn’t nearly as intense because i have modified my diet so much over the last few years. But it is very important you read every label, what the package says and what the ingredients say don’t match. The emphasis is not focusing on the food but devoting all your attention to God. Fasting is a way of getting rid of the garbage physically and spirtiually! You have to be creative in your cooking. I made a meatless chili that i actually ate the whole pot over a weak. 100% tomato sauce diluted down, lots of onions, kidney beans, pinto beans and black beans with some natural seasonings and i added 100% wheat spaghetti. For crackers i used these 100% white corn chips that were toasted not fried. I do this fast to eliminate any hidden sin so that i can draw closer to God. I have never been disappointed!

    Hi Brie,
Exercise – You can get plenty of protein in nuts and peanut butter, Whole grains, legumes and leafy green vegetables, many people add in unsweetened soy protein powder for a ‘smoothie’ meal (make sure the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast and watch out for milk products (whey) and sweeteners along with chemical additives). Depending on how rigorous your exercise is, you may need to consider modifying the fast to match your routine by adding some fish and chicken. I hope this helps!

    Hi Martin,
No, if sugar is listed in the peanut butter ingredients, then you need to keep looking for one that has only peanuts and maybe salt listed in the ingredients. Regular table salt has additives, so you will want to look for a Natural, Organic, Sea or Kosher salt with no additives in it. French fries can be tossed with a little oil, seasoned and baked in the oven, but there is no deep fried foods allowed on the fast.
    Be Blessed on your Fast!

    Hi Jag,
The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based. The Bible says, “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12 Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, rice and the like are all considered grown from seed. I encourage you to study the information on this blog and my site at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com as there is a wealth of information about the Daniel Fast. I hope this helps!

The only drinking beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. However, you can use 100% unsweetened juice and plant-based milks in recipes, (milk in cereals)…And, when added to blended fruit and vegetables in a ‘smoothie” when made as as a meal replacement. Yes, apple cider vinegar is allowed on the fast.
