    Hello Susan,
I have a question for you to see if you can help me to understand the different between the “Daniel Fasting and the Daniel Plan.”
In the Daniel Plan, we could eat meat but in the Daniel Fasting, we could not eat meat. Can you explain?

    April 10, 2015
    • The Daniel Plan is not at all about fasting. It’s a way of eating in a healthy manner. The Daniel Fast is a method of fasting, which is a spiritual discipline to draw nearer to God and seek His guidance and wisdom.

What are your thoughts on using a meal replacement shake during the fast? The one I am referring to is called Shakeology. It does contain natural ingredients and is sweetened with stevia and agave.

      Hi Abby,
Although plant based and natural, Stevia and agave are a sweetener and there are no sweeteners (natural or artificial) allowed on the fast. I hope this helps!

I got a 100% natural granola mix with dried berries in it to eat. Got to looking at the ingredients and it has brown rice syrup and dried cane sugar in it. I was wondering if they were the same a syrups and regular sugars?

They are both sweeteners, therefore need to be avoided while on the fast.

  18. My husband and I started our fast today. We started our morning by reading the devotional. Then we prayed together for God’s leading and guidance. After that I made a fruit smoothie with bananas, frozen cherries, and a little almond milk. Then I prepared a squash soup for lunch and I am now slow cooking a vegetable stew for supper to serve with a nice toss salad. All things are possible for those who believe and trust in Him. God bless.

I am starting the fast today for 7 days. Off to Hawaii on the 9th. If this is successful I will start again for a 21 day fast when returning. If this is based on Daniels diet, did he have smoothies and other foods that we have in his day? Who decides what is allowed on the diet that is not in the Word?

    January 2, 2015
    • Ed, the background is all covered in detail in the book or on this site. The fast is based on the fasting experiences of the prophet found in Daniel 1 and 10. We are not eating the same foods Daniel ate, but staying within the guidelines of the what we find in the scriptures.

      Be blessed on your fast

I have done varied versions of this fast. Some churches have allowed fish and turkey and chicken. Also, I am familiar with the story of Daniel 1 where they refused the Kings meat and wine because of the customs. So I am wondering when did it become a “fast?” And what happened after the 10 day period? Did they go back to eating a regular diet or was this diet kept? I cant find any scripture reference on that. Also, the foods of that day were different from what we have now, with preservatives and all. Just wondering

    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Regina,
We are happy to provide you with an overview of the Daniel Fast: The Daniel Fast is a type of fast based on the combined fasting/mourning experiences of the prophet along with typical Jewish fasting principles.

Susan Gregory has spent years researching the Daniel Fast. The two foundational scriptures for the fast are:
Daniel 1:12 “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Pulse is food grown from seed . . . corn, potatoes, wheat, rice, fruit and the like are all considered grown from seed. (Water only, no dairy/meat).
Dan. 10:3 – I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks. Because of this, we eat no sweeteners of any kind, no deep fried foods and no fancy desserts. We also don’t use any stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol.
Finally, we look to the typical Jewish fasting principles. This primarily impacts leavening – so no yeast breads or foods with leavening are allowed. So you see the only restriction on food preparation is no deep frying. Foods can be cooked as in steamed, baked, broiled, boiled, and even a light stir fry is fine.
I do encourage you to go into deeper study about the Daniel Fast. Remember, we are not trying to reenact the prophet’s fast, but rather use the experiences to serve as guidelines for a partial fast that can be experienced by people today.
You will find a wealth of information about the Daniel Fast on this blog and on my website at All the resources you need for a successful and biblical Daniel Fast are here. If you are interested in learning more about the fast, you might want to get a copy of The Daniel Fast where Susan Gregory goes into great depth about fasting and the Daniel Fast in particular. I hope this helps

Hi Susan, Enjoying the page and all the resourceful information. My question is can you have orange juice or cranberry juice on this fast ?

        January 4, 2015
      • Daniel Fast Team #

The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water (see Daniel 1). You can use juice in recipes or in breakfast smoothies.
