Balance for Your Daniel Fast

balanceThe Daniel Fast is a powerful method of fasting! I believe it’s bringing hundreds of thousands of men and women into the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting since it’s a partial fast and some foods can be eaten. Many people would not be able to fulfill the demands of their daily obligations if they were to go without food for 21 days. But the Daniel Fast allowed us to have some foods while others are restricted.

The key is to keep all things in balance. We are fasting. The definition of a spiritual fast is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose. So we want to keep that in mind. Just because we can eat food doesn’t mean we want to abandon the restrictive part of the discipline.

On the Daniel Fast we can have hearty and nourishing foods. We don’t necessarily have to “go hungry.” However, we also don’t want to go to the extreme and figure out how we can create foods that continue to feed our cravings.

The Daniel Fast is amazing as it affect the whole person – spirit, soul and body. And part of fasting is putting our flesh in submission as we come under the Spirit of God and allow Him to reign in our lives.

Again, I call all of us to balance. Yes, it’s okay to prepare meals that are pleasant, filling and nutritious. That’s what God wants for us all the time. But we need to institute balance by not catering to the flesh.

We gain life-changing lessons while we’re fasting. Developing the fruit of the spirit of self-control is one of the most precious lessons we can receive. Fasting gives us the opportunity to examine our hearts and to make sure our motives are aligned with the men and women of God we want to be – submitted to Him and walking in His ways.

Easy High-protein Breakfast Stir-fry for the Daniel Fast

Sometimes it can be hard coming up with good breakfasts on the Daniel Fast, especially if you are used to eggs. I made what I thought was a delicious breakfast and it was quick.

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, sliced

1/2 green pepper, chopped

1 cup firm tofu, diced in bite-sized pieces

  garlic salt to taste

  Italian herbs to taste

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add oil and heat for a couple minutes. Add the onions and green peppers and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Add tofu, garlic salt and Italian herbs. Continue to cook until vegetables are soft.

Makes two servings.

This was so tasty. The tofu is about the same consistency as egg whites and it soaks up the flavors of whatever it’s being cooked with. Very easy, tastes great, and lot of protein.

A couple great tools for the Daniel Fast

There are two kitchen helps I find so very useful during the Daniel Fast.

  • Rice Cooker – mine is small and makes a maximum of 6 cups of cooked rice, but that’s an okay amount for what I need to prepare. For every cup of dry rice, I add 2 cups of water. Toss in some sea salt, pop on the lid, and flip the switch. It turns off automatically when the rice is cooked and it takes about 40 minutes. It’s so easy!
  • Salad Spinner – okay, here is my true confession: I hate making salads. I know I am not supposed to confess negative things over me (maybe I will try and declare that I love making salads during the fast🙂 ) but for some reasons, making salads is not a thrilling experience for me. That’s why I like using the salad spinner. Easy to just wash, tear, spin and the lettuce is ready.

Just another word on salad making strategies. When I return home from grocery shopping, I cut up all the fresh ingredients for salads and store them in air-tight containers in the fridge. Then when it’s time to make a salad, I just add the amount of each ingredient I want to the bowl and it takes about 3 minutes to put together the medley. The good news is that for someone who has an aversion to making salads, this almost makes it a non-issue! Pray for me!

Brown Rice and Apple Breakfast

Hi, Susan:

I have been thoroughly enjoying the posts on your Daniel Fast website and am pleased to share with you a discovery I made just this morning for breakfast (this is for an individual serving):

1 cup cooked brown rice
fresh apple (cut up into bite size pieces – to taste)
raisins (to taste)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspooon 100% pure edible coconut oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl (except the oil), heat for 2 minutes. Add oil, stir and Eat! It is delicious!

You could probably add soy milk to this, but I don’t like soy milk so I didn’t and it was just as tasty (and filling!🙂

Thank you for this opportunity to share and for your awesome ministry.

God Bless!

“Plus” Your Water

When you “plus” something, you take a “good thing and make it better.” Daniel Fast Blog Friend Renee Hastings shared this great thought about “plussing” drinking water:

Some folks don’t like the “taste” of water, which is critical during the fast.  How about suggesting they add cucumber and lemon slices? The flavor combination is very refreshing!!🙂

Thanks Renee for taking the time to share your great idea!

Yeah! Thank God for 2008

God bless us in the New Year! 2008 is indeed a year of New Beginnings!

Many have already started the Daniel Fast for 2008. Brothers and Sister in Christ, we lift you up in prayer. My hope is that each one of us enters the fast with all the expectancy that our Lord wants us to have. He is a faithful God and He is calling an army of believers together! I truly believe this fast is a time of “tuning us up” for the next move of God.

Moving into the New Year with prayer and fasting is like crossing a threshold into greater hope, increased faith, and deeper intimacy with Christ. He is so awesome! His love is so amazing. And His Word so true.

Be blessed, fasting friends. And let’s all keep this Daniel Fast Blog community lifted in prayer. Please send me your praise and miracle reports so that I can send the news to others on the blog. We can encourage each one another with faith reports and witnesses of glory.

Happy New Year and praise the Lord!

READ THE LABELS when selecting prepared foods

God bless you all. I am so blessed and honored to be in this position when I can hear from so many of you as you get ready for the Daniel Fast. Please know that God is doing a mighty work. We can all expect great things from our faithful Father. Prayer and fasting is so powerful and while I can’t explain the “why or how” I do know for sure that it moves heaven’s power!

I receive many questions about prepared foods and so I wanted to write this post. READ THE LABELS of all prepared foods. Remember that the Daniel Fast is sugar-free and chemical-free. So if you use anything like canned fruits and vegetables, packaged foods, or prepared sauces you MUST, before you use them, READ THE LABELS.

Major food companies are “getting it” and now provide many chemical-free products. They’re not as good about sugar additives.  So READ THE LABELS and see if the product you are considering meets with the Daniel Fast Guidelines of no sugar and no chemicals.

Plan a Meal Preparation Day While on the Daniel Fast

Meal preparation will take more time on the Daniel Fast since most of the foods will be homemade. A practice I do throughout the year and works well during the Daniel Fast is to establish a day when I prepare several meals for the coming week.

Saturday works best for me. I plan my menus and grocery shopping list at the same time. Then after my shopping is complete, I come home and wash and trim all my fresh vegetables. I slice and dice and store vegetables to be used later in the week for lunches and salads. I make double batches of soups, stews and casseroles. And I try to prepare the time consuming recipes that I would otherwise not have time to make on busier weekdays.

While preparing the meals I listen to uplifting music or by audio Bible. It’s a very fun, creative and energizing time. The time I invest on this meal preparation day pays major dividends later in the week when I can prepare a salad in less than five minutes and when I have lunches already portioned out in individual servings that can just be popped in a bag to be eaten later at the office or at school.

This is also a nice time to involve the family as they can help to make meals, visit the cook, or pack lunches! If you have never done this, you will be surprised at how much time and money you will save!

Youth, Special Diets, and the Daniel Fast

I want to answer some questions I’ve received about the Daniel Fast and how to handle various circumstances.

First things First: Remember the definition of fasting – to restrict food for a spiritual reasons. The Daniel Fast is a biblical model, but there is nothing powerful about the specific foods eaten or not eaten. The “power” in the fast is that a believer is consecrating (setting aside or separating) himself or herself for a period of time for prayer and fasting. This period of consecration will affect the body, soul, and spirit. By restricting some foods on the Daniel Fast, one is taking authority over the flesh and requiring that it submit to the spiritual discipline.

Youth and Teens on the Daniel Fast: First of all, the Daniel Fast is a very healthy diet. So if young people are signing up for the fast, there really isn’t a problem of getting enough nutrition. I think the bigger question is youthfulness, schedules, and perhaps physical demands of young people in sports.

If your child, a Sunday School class, or a youth group is entering the fast, then you might want to ask the young people what would work for them. Perhaps they will fast all sugar and “junk food” and otherwise eat their normal diet. Or maybe they will stick with the Daniel Fast at home, but resume their normal food intake when at school.

Talking with the teens and having them pray about the fast and how they can be authentic and true, but at the same time not set themselves up for failure, is important. Also, if a teen has high protein needs, then keeping eggs and other dairy in the fast might work or not eliminating meat, but just breads, desserts, fried foods, etc.

Diabetic requirements: First of all, anytime you are changing your diet or exercise plan, you should consult your health provider. So please do so if you have special diet needs and plan to enter the Daniel Fast.

With that said, the Daniel Fast is actually a very healthy diet! If you are willing to eat different foods than what you may normally consume, you will have all the protein, vitamins, minerals, and other requirements that your body needs. Since diabetics need to keep their food intake in proper balance, you may need to make some adjustments . . . but that’s all okay. Remember, this is a spiritual fast. Any fast should never cause harm! You might even find yourself in better health while on the Daniel Fast with lower sugar consumption and healthier carbohydrates.

Here’s an idea: Ask your doctor to supply you with a vegan or vegetarian eating plan specifically designed for diabetics. Use this as your fast and then, just like all fasting – stick with the plan! You will likely find it very similar to the Daniel Fast.

Special Health Needs: If you are currently under a doctor’s care or have health issues that concern you, please be sure to consult your health provider before entering the fast. Direct them to this site where they have immediate access to the Daniel Fast food list and guidelines.

Other questions: Please contact me if you have other thoughts and questions. My goal with the site is to provide quality information for people as they seek a deeper relationship with the Lord through prayer and fasting.

God bless you as you prepare for the Daniel Fast

I am so excited. And I can’t express enough thanks to all of you who are supporting this effort by purchasing the Daniel Fast books. You are so kind and truly being God’s blessing in my life!

From everything I hear in my personal prayer time and from others in the Christian community, I truly believe the power of God is about to break forth in our world as we have never before seen it. Obviously, we don’t know the exact day or hour. But what I do know is that He is preparing an army of men, women and young people to help take the church to a new level.

My prayer is that the power of God will so manifest in our churches and through our Christian brothers and sisters that the world will have to stop and take notice. Not only notice, but they will want what God has for them — His love, His healing, His grace, His blessing, and His mercy!

God is a good God and He is calling us to come to Him. Oh, friends, I am almost bursting with anticipation! Come Lord Jesus!

Thank you again for being so supportive. God told me He would bless me so that I can in turn bless others! I want to be a blessing to you! I want you to sense the love of the Christ in every word I write.  That is what He wants me to do and I want to obey Him with every fiber of my being.

We are all part of the blessing cycle. Let’s continue to open our hearts to Him and His love. Let’s get so full of God that every little thing that keeps us from being our best for Him is pushed away, never to be picked up again.

God bless you, friends! We are almost there!

Whole Grain Pasta on the Daniel Fast

I don’t know if you’ve noticed the pasta companies are heeding the desires of more and more people who are getting away from white processed flour and into whole grains. Consequently, they’ve created lines of whole grain pasta in just about every shape and size.

With all that said, you still need to read the labels. Golden Grain’s Multi-Grain Spaghetti has what they call “crystallized cane juice.” Sounds an awful like sugar to me! But I also buy a store brand that is 100% Durum Wheat (Fred Meyer stores are a Pacific Northwest chain, but part of the Kroger line). That’s totally within the Daniel Fast Guidelines.

If you haven’t eaten whole wheat pasta before, you’ll find that the flavor is indeed different. Not bad . . . just different! I actually prefer the flavor because it . . . well . . . it has more flavor! One of my favorite ways to prepare pasta is to saute vegetables in a little olive oil  or just braise them in water until tender. Mix them with cooked pasta and some olive oil. When not fasting I add Parmesan cheese, but I just leave that ingredient out during the fast.

You can also use prepared sauces (again, check the label for ingredients) along with sauteed or braised onions and garlic. Heat everything up and then just pour it over cooked pasta.

I think this is a really nice addition to the foods that are within the Daniel Fast Guidelines. These are not substitutes, but rather a different kind of food. Whole grain pasta is much better for you and offers 7 grams of protein per serving (3/4 cup of dried pasta).

So, enjoy this nice new product line! It’s not really an advancement, but rather choosing to go back to what is good, true and healthy!

Quick Tomato Sauce

This is an easy recipe for homemade tomato sauce that you can use as a base for vegetable casseroles, over 100% whole wheat pasta, or over brown rice.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium yellow onion (chopped)

2 cans diced tomatoes (14.5 oz) – consider the tomatoes with herbs or roasted

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped

Saute onions in heated oil over medium heat, cooking until soft. Add tomatoes (including juice), cinnamon, and salt and pepper. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Add cilantro and simmer for 5 or 10 more minutes. Serve over pasta, rice or cooked vegetables.

The Inside Scoop . . .

Hi Friends,

My name is Susan Gregory – a.k.a. The Daniel Fast Blogger. I’m writing today because so many people think this weblog is the work of some big company or ministry . . . so I wanted to introduce myself to you because we are starting to become a grassroots community of everyday Christian men and women who want to deepen our relationship with Christ.

This last year has been one of great transition for me (I know many of you are saying, “Me, too!”). I believe this has been a pruning period (see John 15:2) and also a time when God gave me my appointment to return to Christian writing. In that appointment, came an assignment . . . to help get the word out about the Daniel Fast.

On December 4, 2007 I started this blog. I have fasted many times and used the Daniel Fast for longer fasts. So I just started writing about what I knew and also tapped into the many resources I have available to me in my personal faith-building library.

The first day the blog had 7 hits. But within a week the daily count was more than 600 hits. And within 10 days the hit count was just short of 1000. I started hearing from readers asking questions and I could see the kind of information people were seeking. That’s why I wrote The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit and later The Daniel Fast Cookbook – 2008 Edition.

Words are not adequate to express the deep and very heart-felt appreciation I have for all of you who have purchased the books. You truly are making it possible for me to abandon all other work so that I can give all my focus to obeying God and the assignment He has for me.

This year has been one of the most difficult of my life . . . and I praise God for His goodness and for being right beside me as I have learned more and more about “fighting the good fight of faith.” I know many of you know exactly what I am talking about, because you also have had to battle the strongholds that have tried to crush us. The enemy’s only goal is to steal, kill and destroy God’s people. But as we stand firm on God’s Word and His promises . . . we will overcome.

I believe with all my heart that 2008 is a new beginning. That the strongholds are coming down even now . . . and that there are great battles going on in the heavenly realms (read Daniel 10).  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that thousands of Christian men and women are hearing that still small voice in their spirit telling them to begin the New Year with prayer and fasting.

God is good. He loves us with an immeasurable love. And He is ALWAYS victorious. As we abide in Him . . . and we enter into His Secret Place and dwell in the Almighty . . . then we have access to a realm that the world doesn’t even know exists. I can only believe that God is raising up an army of warriors to make His Light shine in the darkness.

It is no coincidence that you are reading these words even now . . . God is ministering to you as He is to tens of thousands of others. He is calling us! As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us . . . and He wants us close so that He can love us, care for us, and use us!

I am looking forward to a glorious year! And I am so glad that God has given me this honor to be able to interact with so many others who also are heeding the call of our Lord.

God bless you and thank you again for your words of encouragement and blessing, for your support by buying the books, and for your willingness to join with other members in the Body of Christ as we raise up the Name of Jesus and truly behold our King!

Daniel Fast Menu Planning

I have found that I am most successful fasting when I plan ahead. I don’t want to focus so much on the food, although that’s important in this fast. I want to spend most of my time and energy focusing on my relationship with our Lord.

So, I try to plan about three days of menus at a time and make sure I have everything I need to prepare the simple meals. I plan to post more than 100 recipes up on this weblog over the next few weeks, so come back often. You can receive a very helpful Daniel Fast Meal Planning Worksheet by subscribing to our list at http://daniel-fast.com

Here are just a few simple menus. They are all ideas for menus that you can use during your Fast:
