Susan Gregory, The Daniel Fast

Hi Friends,

My name is Susan Gregory – a.k.a. The Daniel Fast Blogger. I’m writing today because so many people think this weblog is the work of some big company or ministry . . . so I wanted to introduce myself to you because we are becoming a grassroots community of everyday Christian men and women who want to deepen our relationship with Christ. This last year was been one of great transition for me (I know many of you are saying, “Me, too!”). I believe this has been a pruning period (see Matthew 15:2) and also a time when God gave me my appointment to return to Christian writing. In that appointment, came an assignment . . . to help get the word out about the Daniel Fast.

On December 4, 2007 I started this blog. I have fasted many times and used the Daniel Fast for longer fasts. So I just started writing about what I knew and also tapped into the many resources I have available to me in my personal faith-building library.

The first day the blog had 7 hits. But within a week the daily count was more than 600 hits. And within 10 days the hit count was just short of 1000. I started hearing from readers asking questions and I could see the kind of information people were seeking. That’s why I wrote The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit and later The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version I.

Words are not adequate to express the deep and very heart-felt appreciation I have for all of you who have purchased the books. You truly are making it possible for me to abandon all other work so that I can give all my focus to obeying God and the assignment He has for me.

The year 2007 was one of the most difficult of my life . . . and I praise God for His goodness and for being right beside me as I have learned more and more about “fighting the good fight of faith.” I know many of you know exactly what I am talking about, because you also have had to battle the strongholds that have tried to crush us. The enemy’s only goal is to steal, kill and destroy God’s people. But as we stand firm on God’s Word and His promises . . . we will overcome.

I believed with all my heart that 2008 was a new beginning. That the strongholds were coming down  . . . and that there were great battles going on in the heavenly realms (read Daniel 10).  God was so faithful. Here I am now in the midst of the victory with even more blessings to come! And even now, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that thousands of Christian men and women are hearing that still small voice in their spirit telling them to pray and fast.

God is good. He loves us with an immeasurable love. And He is ALWAYS victorious. As we abide in Him . . . and we enter into His Secret Place and dwell in the Almighty . . . then we have access to a realm that the world doesn’t even know exists. I can only believe that God is raising up an army of warriors to make His Light shine in the darkness.

It is no coincidence that you are reading these words even now . . . God is ministering to you as He is to tens of thousands of others. He is calling us! As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us . . . and He wants us close so that He can love us, care for us, and use us!

I am looking forward to a glorious year! And I am so glad that God has given me this honor to be able to interact with so many others who also are heeding the call of our Lord.

  3. Dana,

Biblical fasting is “to refrain from food for a spiritual purpose.” So fasting from skincare lotions really isn’t necessary. The main thing is that as Christians we want to draw nearer to God during the fast. Daniel was hungry to hear from God and he put aside all that was pleasurable to the flesh so he could instead focus on hearing from the Lord.

    I hope this helps.

Okay, since I use oil for skincare in place of lotion, and oil for my haircare, maybe I should consider fasting that?

  7. In those days, a common practice was to anoint the head and hair with oil. It was like perfuming the body. And so during this time, Daniel refrained from this practice. It wasn’t a hygiene issue, but more of a pleasantry to the body.

In Daniel 10:3 It speaks of not anointing oneself also for the three weeks. Can you speak to, or clarify that at all for me?

  9. Hi!

No. The Daniel Fast is totally plant-based. Look for plant-based protein powders. They are easily available these days. Just make sure they are free of sweeteners and chemicals.

  10. Hello Susan,
Are you able to have Whey Protein on the Daniel Fast?

  11. You might try using a different vegetable or beans. You’ll need to experiment. The tomatoes add their classic element, but lots of other foods can be substituted.

I’m wanting to make the Daniel Fast Shepherd’s Pie today. Though I know the health benefits of tomatoes, when I eat them, I break out. Is there another vegetable I could substitute the tomatoes for? Unfortunately, lots of the recipes in The Daniel Fast use them a lot. Thanks for yours help re: this matter. Blessings to all, Anna

Yes Linda, we encourage people to take communion with every opportunity! Even better while Fasting (don’t be concerned about the ingredients). Coming together in remembrance of our Lord and the price He paid to redeem us is the very reason we fast, to be surrendered to Him and to know Him more fully! Be Blessed!

    Hi Ricardo,
Yes, rice milk is fine to use in recipes and on cereal (all plant based milks such as almond, rice, oat, coconut, soy and such), just not as a drinking beverage as water is the only beverage on the fast (free of additives and sweeteners).

    Hi Ed,
Great question! Yes, I have and have found every fast I do to be different no matter what type of food restrictions I implement. God say’s when we draw near to him, He draws near to us!

Yes, this sounds fine with the exception of cocoa powder. That one is a fine line due to the caffeine in it, so pray about what the Lord would have you to do.

Are smoothies allowed as long as you stick to using ingredients from the list of approved foods? I usually have a fruit & veggie smoothie for breakfast. Also, sometimes I make a banana, almond milk, fresh peanut butter and cocoa powder smoothie. Is cocoa powder allowed?

    Hello Susan,

I want to start the Daniel fast for the New Year. It would be my first experience.
I had some questions about the Daniel Fast.

Can I eat cold whole grain cereal in a box with almond milk or oat milk?

Can I eat soy cheddar cheese slices?

Can I eat popcorners air popped corn snacks?

Can I have fruit smoothies using the nutri bullet?

Thank you for answering my questions.

Is apple cider (pasteurized), allowed in a recipe, such as oatmeal?

    January 5, 2015
  31. I don’t understand why SOY products are allowed on this fast. It doesn’t seem to be a good idea given the dangers. So are things like almond milk ok?

Thanks for your reply Susan. Have you found doing the Daniel fast is enough? Have you done the complete fasts or water only fasts for any length of time and found a difference in your spiritual experience? Thanks for your information and encouragement!

  33. The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water, so no drinking tomato juice.

Begin the fast. Be wise about your food portions. My guess is that you will experience the battles with the flesh that fasting brings. But remember, the primary focus of your fast is drawing nearer to God. The food is just on part of it.

In the Daniel fast, how much should I eat? It almost seems like not a fast eating anything but it is hard to just drink water only. Is tomato juice allowed as a drink?

    January 2, 2015
  35. Thanks, that’s good to know.

    December 31, 2014
  36. Whole grain couscous is allowed. It’s often called “Israeli Couscous.”

    Be blessed

Hello everyone, does anyone know if couscous is allowed on the Daniels fast?

    December 31, 2014
  38. Yes, it would be acceptable as a meal replacement as long as the protein powders are free of chemicals and sweeteners.

    Be blessed!

  39. Sheila,

Check out the list of ingredients on the label to make sure the cereal is free of chemicals and sweeteners. Also, use unsweetened plant-based milk with it, again make sure the ingredients are okay.

    Be blessed.
