Homemade Dijon Mustard for the Daniel Fast
As you probably have discovered, most prepared Dijon mustard includes sugar or another sweetener in its ingredients, deeming it unusable on the Daniel Fast. However, since most of us eat a lot more salads than usual, we want good flavors . . . and adding Dijon mustard to our salad dressing recipes provides a wonderful, full flavor. So here is a recipe for Homemade Dijon Mustard! You can make a batch of it and store it for use during the Daniel Fast. If you want, you can add a little honey to the recipe AFTER the fast, but meanwhile, be blessed with this modified recipe.
Ingredients:
2 cups dry white wine vinegar
1 cup finely chopped onions
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
4 ounces dry mustard
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 teaspoons salt
Few drops Tabasco
Directions: Combine vinegar, onion and garlic. Heat to boiling and simmer for five minutes. Pour into medium bowl to cool. Add dry mustard and the oil into a small sauce pan. Now pour the vinegar mixture through a strainer into the saucepan, whisking until very smooth. Sir in the salt and Tabasco. Heat slowly, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Allow to cool and then pour into non-metallic covered container. For best results, chill at last two days before using. This mixture will stay fresh in the refrigerator for several weeks.

I did not see when to add the oil salt and tabasco? Do I add it before or after the boil and simmer?
Hi Sharon,
It’s all about the ingredients and what’s in it, so read the label on the Ken brand to see if it is Daniel Fast friendly. A prepared dressing that I know fits the Daniel Fast is Newman’s Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing. You can also make your own salad dressings and there are many recipes in the Daniel Fast Cookbooks http://www.daniel-fast.com I hope this helps!
What store brand salad dressing is okay for the daniel fast? I thought I previously read a “Ken” Brand is okay?
are tortillas allowed?
Hi Zach,
Yes, you can make this salad dressing without the onions, taste it when finished and see how you like it. If it’s missing that extra little something, add in a little onion seasoning, but first check the ingredients label and make sure there is no additives. Enjoy!
hi,
im going to surprise my dad with this salad dressing but he hates onions…not the taste but the texture. should i add in an amount of onion flavor or just leave it out? would love to hear what you think! thanks
You can use distilled vinegar instead and it will still be good.
Be blessed as you continue to seek God and His love.
Hi
i Love this Mustard but since i knew there was alcohol i stopped having it because im a Muslim. if i dont put the wine is there a substitute? or does it make no difference?
cheers,
Mohammed
Where did you learn that salt was not allowed on the Daniel Fast? I am curious as to the source of that restriction.
There are no restrictions to salt or other spices and herbs in the Scripture.
I do hope to hear from you as I’m curious. Thanks in advance.
I did not think that salt was allowed on the Daniel’s Fast, but I see many of your recipes call for salt. Can you please explain?
Hey Cowboy!
No, typical mayonnaise is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. However, you can either purchase or make mayo from soy. You will find recipes of soy mayonnaise in The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version II
HOW ABOUT MAYONNAISE? ALLOWED?? SUBSTITUTE IF NOT?
Hi Elle,
Vinegar is fermented, but it’s not fomentation that is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. Alcohol is forbidden, which is different. That’s why even wine vinegars are allowed, because there is no alcohol.
I hope this answers your question.
Since vinegar’s process requires fermatation and it is often made from wines, I always left it out. Why do you leave it in?
Hey William!
Thank you so much for catching the mistake and bringing it to my attention! Yes, the recipe calls for white wine vinegar.
Be blessed and thanks again.
Thanks for the Homemade Dijon Mustard recipe! Question: Should not the 2 cups dry white wine listed in the “ingredients” be 2 cups white vinegar? Will
