Susan Gregory, The Daniel Fast

Hi Friends,

My name is Susan Gregory – a.k.a. The Daniel Fast Blogger. I’m writing today because so many people think this weblog is the work of some big company or ministry . . . so I wanted to introduce myself to you because we are becoming a grassroots community of everyday Christian men and women who want to deepen our relationship with Christ. This last year was been one of great transition for me (I know many of you are saying, “Me, too!”). I believe this has been a pruning period (see Matthew 15:2) and also a time when God gave me my appointment to return to Christian writing. In that appointment, came an assignment . . . to help get the word out about the Daniel Fast.

On December 4, 2007 I started this blog. I have fasted many times and used the Daniel Fast for longer fasts. So I just started writing about what I knew and also tapped into the many resources I have available to me in my personal faith-building library.

The first day the blog had 7 hits. But within a week the daily count was more than 600 hits. And within 10 days the hit count was just short of 1000. I started hearing from readers asking questions and I could see the kind of information people were seeking. That’s why I wrote The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit and later The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version I.

Words are not adequate to express the deep and very heart-felt appreciation I have for all of you who have purchased the books. You truly are making it possible for me to abandon all other work so that I can give all my focus to obeying God and the assignment He has for me.

The year 2007 was one of the most difficult of my life . . . and I praise God for His goodness and for being right beside me as I have learned more and more about “fighting the good fight of faith.” I know many of you know exactly what I am talking about, because you also have had to battle the strongholds that have tried to crush us. The enemy’s only goal is to steal, kill and destroy God’s people. But as we stand firm on God’s Word and His promises . . . we will overcome.

I believed with all my heart that 2008 was a new beginning. That the strongholds were coming down  . . . and that there were great battles going on in the heavenly realms (read Daniel 10).  God was so faithful. Here I am now in the midst of the victory with even more blessings to come! And even now, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that thousands of Christian men and women are hearing that still small voice in their spirit telling them to pray and fast.

God is good. He loves us with an immeasurable love. And He is ALWAYS victorious. As we abide in Him . . . and we enter into His Secret Place and dwell in the Almighty . . . then we have access to a realm that the world doesn’t even know exists. I can only believe that God is raising up an army of warriors to make His Light shine in the darkness.

It is no coincidence that you are reading these words even now . . . God is ministering to you as He is to tens of thousands of others. He is calling us! As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us . . . and He wants us close so that He can love us, care for us, and use us!

I am looking forward to a glorious year! And I am so glad that God has given me this honor to be able to interact with so many others who also are heeding the call of our Lord.

I’m wanting to make the Daniel Fast Shepherd’s Pie today. Though I know the health benefits of tomatoes, when I eat them, I break out. Is there another vegetable I could substitute the tomatoes for? Unfortunately, lots of the recipes in The Daniel Fast use them a lot. Thanks for yours help re: this matter. Blessings to all, Anna

    April 1, 2015
    • You might try using a different vegetable or beans. You’ll need to experiment. The tomatoes add their classic element, but lots of other foods can be substituted.

Are you supposed to take communion while on the Daniel fast?

    January 18, 2015
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Yes Linda, we encourage people to take communion with every opportunity! Even better while Fasting (don’t be concerned about the ingredients). Coming together in remembrance of our Lord and the price He paid to redeem us is the very reason we fast, to be surrendered to Him and to know Him more fully! Be Blessed!

Is rice milk allowed? just wondering

    January 9, 2015
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Ricardo,
Yes, rice milk is fine to use in recipes and on cereal (all plant based milks such as almond, rice, oat, coconut, soy and such), just not as a drinking beverage as water is the only beverage on the fast (free of additives and sweeteners).

Is coconut sugar okay on the Daniel fast?

    January 8, 2015
    • Daniel Fast Team #

There are no sweeteners of any kind allowed on the fast (natural or artificial), so pass on the coconut sugar.

Are smoothies allowed as long as you stick to using ingredients from the list of approved foods? I usually have a fruit & veggie smoothie for breakfast. Also, sometimes I make a banana, almond milk, fresh peanut butter and cocoa powder smoothie. Is cocoa powder allowed?

    January 7, 2015
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Yes, this sounds fine with the exception of cocoa powder. That one is a fine line due to the caffeine in it, so pray about what the Lord would have you to do.

    January 5, 2015

No sweeteners of any kind on the fast (natural or artificial), including agave nectar. I hope this helps!

    Hello Susan,

I want to start the Daniel fast for the New Year. It would be my first experience.
I had some questions about the Daniel Fast.

Can I eat cold whole grain cereal in a box with almond milk or oat milk?

Can I eat soy cheddar cheese slices?

Can I eat popcorners air popped corn snacks?

Can I have fruit smoothies using the nutri bullet?

Thank you for answering my questions.

    January 5, 2015
    • Daniel Fast Team #

All these foods sound fine If the ingredients comply with the guidelines (free of sweeteners and additives etc.)

Thanks for your reply Susan. Have you found doing the Daniel fast is enough? Have you done the complete fasts or water only fasts for any length of time and found a difference in your spiritual experience? Thanks for your information and encouragement!

      Hi Ed,
Great question! Yes, I have and have found every fast I do to be different no matter what type of food restrictions I implement. God say’s when we draw near to him, He draws near to us!

In the Daniel fast, how much should I eat? It almost seems like not a fast eating anything but it is hard to just drink water only. Is tomato juice allowed as a drink?

    January 2, 2015
    • The only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water, so no drinking tomato juice.

Begin the fast. Be wise about your food portions. My guess is that you will experience the battles with the flesh that fasting brings. But remember, the primary focus of your fast is drawing nearer to God. The food is just on part of it.

Can you eat shredded wheat cereal on the Daniel Fast?

    November 15, 2014
    • Sheila,

Check out the list of ingredients on the label to make sure the cereal is free of chemicals and sweeteners. Also, use unsweetened plant-based milk with it, again make sure the ingredients are okay.

      Be blessed.

      • I don’t understand why SOY products are allowed on this fast. It doesn’t seem to be a good idea given the dangers. So are things like almond milk ok?

        January 4, 2015
      • Daniel Fast Team #

Yes, Almond milk is fine to use in recipes and on cereal (as is all plant based milks such as almond, rice, oat, coconut, soy and such), just not as a drinking beverage as water is the only beverage on the fast (free of additives and sweeteners).

I suggest you adopt a “clean food” eating plan. You can check out which is a program I created because so many people wanted to know how to continue their healthy lifestyle. You’ll find more information there.

What if you slipped and had some prohibited foods or gave into other temptations? do you stop and restart or just add days?

    October 17, 2014
    • You don’t need to restart the fast. Just resume it. But be sure to learn from the experience. Examine your heart do discover why you chose to depart from the fast. This can be a great learning for you.

      Be blessed

    Hi Susan,

I have a few questions for you concerning the Daniel Fast. We can’t seem to find any DF friendly soy milk to have with certain foods like Ezekiel 4-9 cereal. Also, is it alright to have whole wheat pasta, we’ve read that it is okay to have it, but isn’t their eggs in ALL pasta? And is it okay to have white distilled white vinegar even if it’s fermented?

Lastly, canned tomatoes. We want to eat it and make it certain meals with it, like spaghetti sauce. I hope you can help! Thanks so much!

    • Hi Jacob.

Happy to answer your questions, but I highly recommend that you get a copy of my book that answers this and so much more about how to have a successful fasting experience. You can get a used copy for a few dollars at Amazon, so the expense is nominal. I can promise you that you will have a better fasting experience with it. Here is the link:

      1) look for unsweetened soy milk. I live in a small town and my supermarket has several to choose from. They are found in the natural foods section. If you can’t find unsweetened soy milk there, check out your local health food store.

      2) Yes, you can have whole grain pasta, and not all pasta has eggs. Read the list of ingredients on the label and make sure they comply with the fast.

      3) White vinegar is allowed. The distillation and fermentation are not issues since it’s not for the same purpose that wine and alcohol are distilled and fermented.

      4) Yes, canned tomatoes are fine. Again, read the list of ingredients on the label to make sure they comply with the Daniel Fast guidelines.

      Be blessed on your fast!

I did a Daniel Fast two years ago, praying for healing from mysterious and constant stomach ailments. During the 21 days, I felt so much better and had no stomach ailments at all. In fact, I enjoyed it. I know God drew me closer to Him, which prepared me for some big things He did later that year. And I loved all the foods. Since then, my stomach problems have returned with a fierce vengeance. I’ve prayed for a solution, help, a healing. I believe God keeps calling the Daniel Fast to mind. My question is this: could this way of eating be sustained for the rest of my life? Or is it too restrictive?

    August 28, 2014
    • HI Amy,

Many people totally transform their eating habits after the positive experiences they’ve had on the Daniel Fast. That desire led me to develop Choose Life Now, which is a membership program for like-minded Christians who want to submit their bodies to the Lord as a living sacrifice and develop a lifestyle of health. We will have a new membership drive soon, but if you are ready to jump in now, you can see the ways to join at this link

We teach about healthy eating at Choose Life Now with the Daniel Fast being the core, but adding in other foods to maintain health for the rest of your life.

Hi Susan…God bless you for this site. Please tell me if whole wheat bread is Ok to eat during the fast.

    February 16, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Bev,
Traditional breads including whole wheat bread is not allowed on the fast mainly because of the leavening in it. However, whole grain flat breads and tortillas (additive free, sweetener free) are allowed as an alternative. Try Ezekiel brand whole wheat or whole grain tortillas, they can be found in the freezer section of most Health food stores or at Trader Joe’s. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

  28. I am so excited and grateful, that I want to share the good news with the Daniel Fast community. After my first 21 day fast I naturally decided to “test” the physical results. I expected good news because I already had experienced a sweet spiritual gain during the beautiful blessings of the devotionals. The “Borderline – high” cholesterol level I have fought since 2011, (in the range of 213 to 255), is now “Normal” 125 mg/dL! I have heard that this is not possible even when people keep a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
I believe this is the result of not only a change of diet, but also of the spiritual power of the fast. Rejoice!

I’m a bariatric patient and take several vitamins. My calcium citrate has fructose as the first ingredient. I checked others and they all have some kind of sweetner listed as not allowed. I do need to get 1500 mg calcium citrate daily. Is this okay?

    February 3, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Susan,
First of all, the Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat. However, I do want to caution you that there are too many possible issues with people who have had bariatric surgery to safely use any method of fasting without a doctors supervision and/or modification (since you need to absorb food differently). But, it can be safely done. I suggest that you take a copy of the food guidelines to your healthcare professional and work with them for the very best way for you . . . and then follow that modified plan strictly as your fast – don’t step to the right or the left and just follow them faithfully.
You can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be BLESSED on your Journey!

I know we’re not supposed to have coffee as a beverage, but what if we have it as a meal, just as if we had a smoothie or a soup? I always drink instant decaf, and see that the ingredient is simply “100% pure coffee”. Obviously instant decaf has been processed, so if that’s the problem, what, if any, type of coffee could be had as a meal?

    January 27, 2014
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Missy,
Water is the only drinking beverage. A liquid meal is a hearty blend of vegetables and fruit (chock full of nutritional value), Soup is food with a liquid broth blend. Coffee is not allowed mainly because it is not water only, And it has caffeine in it (not allowed), and decaf has a chemical process that strips the caffeine (chemicals are also not allowed). I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to direct you in this. Be Blessed!

Our church is using information from you to start a (partial) Daniel Fast for 21 days. I need and desire a closer walk with The Lord. My laziness, inconsistent Bible reading, and prayer life is in trouble! I am hoping for spiritual renewal and growth. While attending a masters degree in Bible (online), I was reading the Word, fasting longer hours and was growing. I’m back in a spiritual rut and am 65 years old! I’m hoping this fast will help me back on the road to spiritual recovery. Thank you and God bless you spiritually, financially, physically, and emotionally.

      Hi Jill,
It’s all about the ingredients. So if it is free of sweeteners and additives, then it would be fine for use in recipes and on cereal (just not as a drinking beverage, water is the only beverage on the fast). I hope this helps!

Thank you for your steadfastness in your calling from the Lord. I’m fasting and in prayer for a closer relationship with the Lord, financial breakthrough, and salvation for family members that do not have a relationship with the Father.
