About

Susan Gregory, The Daniel Fast http://daniel-fast.com

Hi Friends,

My name is Susan Gregory – a.k.a. The Daniel Fast Blogger. I’m writing today because so many people think this weblog is the work of some big company or ministry . . . so I wanted to introduce myself to you because we are becoming a grassroots community of everyday Christian men and women who want to deepen our relationship with Christ. This last year was been one of great transition for me (I know many of you are saying, “Me, too!”). I believe this has been a pruning period (see Matthew 15:2) and also a time when God gave me my appointment to return to Christian writing. In that appointment, came an assignment . . . to help get the word out about the Daniel Fast.

On December 4, 2007 I started this blog. I have fasted many times and used the Daniel Fast for longer fasts. So I just started writing about what I knew and also tapped into the many resources I have available to me in my personal faith-building library.

The first day the blog had 7 hits. But within a week the daily count was more than 600 hits. And within 10 days the hit count was just short of 1000. I started hearing from readers asking questions and I could see the kind of information people were seeking. That’s why I wrote The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit and later The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version I.

Words are not adequate to express the deep and very heart-felt appreciation I have for all of you who have purchased the books. You truly are making it possible for me to abandon all other work so that I can give all my focus to obeying God and the assignment He has for me.

The year 2007 was one of the most difficult of my life . . . and I praise God for His goodness and for being right beside me as I have learned more and more about “fighting the good fight of faith.” I know many of you know exactly what I am talking about, because you also have had to battle the strongholds that have tried to crush us. The enemy’s only goal is to steal, kill and destroy God’s people. But as we stand firm on God’s Word and His promises . . . we will overcome.

I believe with all my heart that 2008 is a new beginning. That the strongholds are coming down even now . . . and that there are great battles going on in the heavenly realms (read Daniel 10).  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that thousands of Christian men and women are hearing that still small voice in their spirit telling them to pray and fast.

God is good. He loves us with an immeasurable love. And He is ALWAYS victorious. As we abide in Him . . . and we enter into His Secret Place and dwell in the Almighty . . . then we have access to a realm that the world doesn’t even know exists. I can only believe that God is raising up an army of warriors to make His Light shine in the darkness.

It is no coincidence that you are reading these words even now . . . God is ministering to you as He is to tens of thousands of others. He is calling us! As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us . . . and He wants us close so that He can love us, care for us, and use us!

I am looking forward to a glorious year! And I am so glad that God has given me this honor to be able to interact with so many others who also are heeding the call of our Lord.

Well I completed the first week and today I start my second week of the 21 days fast. What I have learned is:
    1. Food preparation is necessary for an easy transition
    2. Whole foods do satisfy the body longer
    3. Grocery shopping so much easier once you get the hang of it, sooooo basic
    4. Eating fruit does remove sweet cravings
    5. Prayer – Food is NOT Master
    6. Exercise regiment isn’t affected by this fast – ample foods to eat that supply energy
    7. Testimonies of other fasters helpful
    8. Susan’s daily email readings insightful – most notably this week: REPENT (old testament means to be sorry) and (new testament means to reconsider or think differently). Thank you Susan it puts a whole new meaning into that word.
    9. Thank the Lord for all I have experienced this week and pray I can continue to treat my body as his temple.

There were days that I knew I wasn’t hungry but felt the need/drive/force to eat more than what I thought my body needed. If anyone out there experienced the same thing what suggestions do you have or recommendations to put those feeling to rest. Open to all ideas or thoughts.

    • Thank you, Jackie, for your encouraging message. Our God is so good and He blesses us as we lay down “our way of doing things” to come under His amazing grace and wisdom.

You’ve placed a sweet joy in my heart with your message and a smile on my face as I witness a sister in Christ partaking of the amazing benefits of our Lord.

Be blessed as you continue your fast . . . and as you continue to grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus.

Is popcorn allowed on the Daniel fast?

    January 11, 2013
    • Yes, popcorn is one of the preferred snacks on the Daniel Fast. The best option is popcorn prepared on the stove top or in a popper (air or traditional). You can also use microwave popcorn, but you need to make sure the ingredients are only popcorn, oil, salt and natural preservatives such as tocopherols.

      Be blessed!

Or put 1/4 cup popcorn in a brown lunch bag. Make 2 small folds at the top (as if packing a lunch). Place in the microwave, folded side down, and hit the “popcorn” button. Perfect popcorn with no additives.

    • Immacula,

I encourage you to read John 14 – 17. Just keep reading the chapters over and over again and open your spiritual ears to the loving words of Jesus.

Also, pray that the Lord will surround you His protective angels . . . and pray Psalm 91 over your life.

I hope this helps. Be blessed!

I have a question regarding vitamins, I currently take a vita-pak that includes multi-vitamins, joint compound, and fish oil, are these ok to take on the fast?

    November 27, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi ML,
Yes you can take daily supplements, although we encourage you to find supplements that are free of sweeteners or man-made chemicals. As for the fish oil, it would be best if you could find a plant-based supplement that would meet the needs filled by the fish oil, flaxseed oil is a good alternative. I hope this helps!

Is Korean sticky rice allowed on the Daniel fast?

    November 1, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Hannah,
You are looking to eat only whole grains while on the fast and white rice (sticky rice) is no longer a whole grain (it’s been stripped)…….Here is a snipit on White rice from an article on WebMD:
“White rice is created by removing the bran and germ portions of brown rice, a consequence of the refining process includes loss of fiber, vitamins, magnesium and other minerals, lignans, phytoestrogens, and phytic acid, many of which may be protective factors for diabetes risk.” “We believe replacing white rice and other refined grains with whole grains, including brown rice, would lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.” If you are interested in reading the whole article, here is the link http://diabetes.webmd.com/news/20100614/brown-rice-vs-white-rice-which-is-better I hope this information is helpful, Be Blessed on your journey!

Wheat Thins are 100% whole grain…is this ok?

    September 5, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Lisa,
I don’t think wheat thins work, but the for-sure-answer is in the ingredients, so double check the Ingredients list for sweeteners and additives. You can have original Triscuits as they are made with whole wheat flour and other ingredients that comply with the Danie Fast. Be blessed on your fast.

I make vegetable broth from the vegetables I cook and then drink a cup ful at meals. Is this alright, since you said water is the only drink on the Daniel Fast?

    August 24, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

Drinking/slurping/eating soups, stews, chowders, or just the soup broths etc., all would be considered a meal and not a beverage (broth only=liquid meal). Even though one could get pretty legalistic about whether you are indeed drinking soup broth or eating it. However, since none of these can be considered a drinking beverage, you are fine! Just keep drinking your water too! Be Blessed!

    Hi Susan,
I can’t find a protein shake that is ok for the fast. Is there anyway that you could send me a link to one that is?

I am not familiar with any since I make my own. Which is easy to do if you have a blender, get a plant based protien powder (free of sweeteners and additives), add your favorite fruit/veggies, oats and a splash of soy milk (if needed) and that’s it, enjoy!

Hi I am reading about the Daniel Fast. I see the only beverage allowed is water. Is it only to make natural juice,i.e blended fruits and veggies?

    July 23, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Sasha,
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast. However, juices can be used in recipes and… in a Blended Smoothie. However, Blended smoothies can be a “grey area” ….. ‘smoothies are allowed when used as a liquid meal’….When you drink it as a meal (and not as a snack, dessert or refreshment). I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

Hi Susan, I just started the Daniel fast two days ago. Yesterday I was so lightheaded and nauseated I couldn’t get off the couch. Am I lacking something? I ate a piece of flatbread to help. What brands are okay to use? Karen

    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Karen,
Drink Lots of Water! Some possible symptoms of detox or withdrawals are fatigue, headaches, cramps, and joint pain to name a few. The good news is these symptoms will pass in a few days (3-7) Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, i.e.: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water Daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm/cold weather, physical exercise or Detox.
Pay close attention to get plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables.
Here is a general list of allowed foods: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All Nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: Water only – spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices. For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to http://www.daniel-fast.com and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

  18. Hi I have just a couple more questions: one, can we mix up lunch and dinner (eat lunch for dinner and vice versa)?

Also, if we can eat unlimited fruits, veggies, raw seeds, and nuts, then why are there measurements/portions provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

Is it possible to eat too much on the fast (even though it says unlimited fruits and veggies)? What about dried fruit..like apple crisps or carrot chips, if the only ingrdient is apples or carrots for instance.

Lastly, can we drink shakelogy while on the fast?

    Thanks!

    May 27, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Sarah,
Eating lunch for dinner… or dinner for lunch is your preference. There are no scriptures in the Daniel Fast that specify the amount of food (portion size) or even number of times per day to eat during the fasting period. However, we need to keep in mind that this is a fast and portion control and the eating sensibly is appropriate. So eating three moderate meals and two snacks a day would be appropriate. Portion size is a serving size and is provided for the purpose of the nutritional value that you are to be looking for. The only drinking beverage on the fast is water, however, blended fruit/vegetable smoothies are allowed when used a meal replacement. You will have to check the Ingredients list to see if the shakelogy fits into this category… And that it is Daniel Fast friendly. I hope this helps, Be Blessed on your Fast!

I have a strange question. I did the Daniel Fast for 21 days then went off of it for about 5 weeks. I have now been on it again for about 30 days. I was just diagnosed with dry eye today and was wondering if it could have anything to do with the fast or if you have ever heard of anyone else experiencing this.

    May 8, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Nancy,
No, I have not heard of anything like this being connected to fasting. The only thing that I can encourage you in is that when fasting it is vitally important to be certain that you are getting all the nutrients (and daily water intake) that your body needs to keep your immune system strong and able to fight off all invaders. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

Hello Susan: first of all I thank God that you educated not only me but others about the Daniel Fast. I chose to do the fast for lent ( excluding Sundays). This was my first time doing the fast except for the time that I only did it for abour 2 days. The Lord has showed me some interesting recipes to come up with. At times, I found it challenging because I lacked on some days, variety. Also, it was thought it was a little challenging to do the fast because my husband did not participate in it. He ate some of my foods but he cooked turkey bacon, eggs and sometimes got Popeys chicken & ate it,whereby I smelled it. I was strong & did not yield into that temptation.!!!! I will do the fast again & I’ll make sure that I have your book. Thank God, during the fast, I am gratefull that I became more intimate with the Lord!! Praise God!!!

Quick question. What about having a smoothie as a snack? I am currently on the fast and have been putting frozen fruit with juice. I found out from my wife that the smoothie would only work as a meal substitute. Want to be faithful to this fast and the Lord! Thanks

    March 31, 2012

      Hi Jeremy,
It’s a fine line, but smoothies are considered a liquid meal and are allowed on the Daniel Fast as a meal substitute. I hope this helps!

    March 28, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Delores,
Don’t hesitate to take recipes you like, make modifications to them to give them the Hispanic-Daniel Fast touch. Concerning weight loss: The Daniel Fast is a very healthy way to eat so you will likely benefit greatly from the eating plan. Remember, the definition of fasting is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose. Achieving and maintaining healthy body weight is a combination of Caloric intake (eating three moderate meals with two snacks per day) and Exercise. And, Drink Lots of Water! As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, i.e.: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions, such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, physical exercise or Detox. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Journey!

Can a person just drink 100% bottled vegetable juice from the market? I don’t really want a juicer because I have heard that it is expensive to buy the necessary fruits and vegetables to use it. I have a small apartment and don’t really have alot of counter space either, so I thought I’d drink the 100% vegetable juice in the store.

    March 26, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Obedi,
Water is the only drinking beverage on the fast, unsweetened additive free juices are allowed for use in recipes but not for drinking. With the exception of Smoothies. Blended Fruit/Vegetable Smoothies are allowed on the fast as a meal replacement (since they are considered a “liquid meal” rather than a beverage). A Daniel Fast “smoothie” is simply, blended fruits, vegetables, and if needed a splash of unsweetened plant-based milk (Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, etc.) or some Natural, unsweetened juices. Juices can also be used in recipes. I hope this helps!

    Are egg substitues allowed

    March 19, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Frances,
The Daniel Fast is completely plant-based, so I don’t know that the egg substitutes would work — also no chemicals or sweeteners are allowed on the fast. Review the ingredients in the product you are considering and if they comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines, then it would be okay. Be Blessed!

My question is why would you approve of Tofu and Soy products when there is so many questions about an overload of these products in our diets already? Wouldn’t it be better to not use them because of the questions concerning them?

    March 18, 2012
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Merrilee,
No, you don’t need to eat Tofu or Soy products if it is questionable for you. You can get plenty of protein and the iron that you need on the Daniel Fast without having soy or tofu products. Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables. Also, many people do add to their diet unsweetened (plant based) protein powder into a blended fruit/vegetable ‘smoothie’ as a meal replacement (make sure the ingredients comply with the Daniel Fast and watch out for milk products (whey) and sweeteners along with chemical additives).
If you still question that you’re getting enough protein and iron in your foods consider adding a sweetener free/additive free plant based supplement to your regime. I hope this helps!

While I encourage you to not smoke – there is really nothing in the Daniel Fast that says that it is not allowed. However, you might use this time of prayer, fasting and renewal to end this habit that is so harmful to your body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Be Blessed on your fast!

  42. Hi Ms. Gregory,
Recently a friend of mine sent me your free download of your e-book The Daniel Fast. This was the first time I have actually seen and read the book but not the first time that I have heard of your writing. Before I received the e-mail the Lord had placed it on my heart to fast but I have struggled with fasting due to health and family issues. Your book was an answer to my prayers. When I was young in the Lord I fasted often and had received many miracles from the Lord but now being older it has been a struggle. Beginning this week I have preparing myself for a 10-day fast by weaning myself off caffeine and sugar. Also, I have been eating fruits, vegetables and drinking lots of water. I have told my family what I am doing and why. So far, my family is supporting me. I am looking forward to reading your other books and trying out your recipes. Thank you for being obedient to the Lord for writing these books.

I started my fasting on Dec.1, 2011…Being that I work the night shift, my fasting food has been limited to raw fruit and fresh vegitables. I recently saw on Mellow Mushroom’s menu (I LOVE their salads!!) That they have DAIYA CHEESES, before I get excited about it, I wanted to know if this was allowed on the fast. Being that it is soy, dairy, and additive free. I am very anxious to find out, because it would be a good change of taste!! Thanks & Blessings:)

Yes, vegan cheese would be allowed, But… you need to make sure there are no chemicals and sweeteners in the ingredients. I hope this helps, Be Blessed!

  45. Last Monday I started the Daniel Fast. This will be the second time I have done this fast. Usually I fast without eating so to eat is great! However, I believe I messed up on my fast today. I know we can have potatoes, olive oil and vinegar, but I fried my potatoes in olive oil instead of a baked potato. Also, I didn’t know I could not use honey I thought we could because it is a natural sweetner and I put it in my oatmeal with fresh fruit. Is the potatoes fried in olive oil a no no? Also if you mess up on the fast, do you add days to compensate for the days you messed up?

    • Good morning!

The way you prepared the potatoes is fine. Deep fried foods are not allowed on the fast. However, sautéing or frying in a small amount of oil is allowed. So you’re okay there.

You’ve already discovered that honey is not allowed. So now that you know better you can do better.

You don’t need to start your fast again. Instead, examine your heart as to why you made the mistake and learn. Did you not prepare enough by learning about the fast? Did you take the advice from people who haven’t researched it?

The reason this can be a very important exercise is that the mistakes we make during our fasting experience may mirror other habits or practices we have in other areas of our lives. So this can be a great learning experience that will help you in your walk with the Lord.

      I hope this helps!

      Be blessed on your fast!

Hi! I believe God has impressed upon me to fast for a relationship of mine. He is a new Christian, but is still in some old ways. We are interested in each other but both of us have growing to do before we commit. The problem is that the sexual tension is very strong. I know I don’t need to be around him alone, but I though about not even speaking to him for the duration of it. In addition, I want to get my focus back on God. Is this a valid reason or am I ‘doing it wrong”? Please help! Also, my finances are not the best and that will be part of my fast. Could you recommend some inexpensive recipes?

    November 14, 2011
    • Hi Luan,

Be blessed as you enter into this time of prayer and fasting – allowing the Spirit of God to reign in your life and lead you in the ways that are the very best for you! He is so good and will give us all we need.

The Daniel Fast can be a very economical way of eating by planning and preparing recipes. I like making curries and soups made with lentils. I also use dried beans (so much cheaper than canned beans). Also consider baked potatoes with veggie toppings and olive oil. The Daniel Fast cookbooks at http://daniel-fast.com/store.html have lots of recipes you can use during your fast.

      Be blessed.
