Cane juice is still sugar . . .

By now you are probably very good at reading labels. I have a pair of reader glasses at the ready whenever I’m strolling the grocery aisles. That type can be SO small for these “mature” eyes.

A newer ingredient used in a lot of natural foods is “cane juice.” It might be called something a little different, but if you see the word “cane” it’s still sugar. I asked about the ingredient and it was explained to me that cane juice is what comes before sugar is granulated. The content is the same, however, so it’s still sugar!

Sorry! It’s in a lot of prepared foods that would otherwise be perfect for the Daniel Fast. But the reality is, it’s still sugar and we want to be sugar free.

I’m on day 3 of my fast and it’s going good so far. The cane juice situation has become extremely frustrating for me and the products are all very expensive. I had purchased a few things that I could not find without cane juice and so I prayed about it and I’m going to use them because I don’t want to waste the food or continue spending money I cannot afford to spend.

I understand that no sweeteners are allowed during the Daniel fast but I take into consideration that natural juices are allowed in recipes therefor I’m looking at that perspective when consuming the few products I have that contain cane juice.

This is a decision that I have made personally and I have taken it up with God, my hearts in it and I know I will reach my breakthrough during my Daniel Fast due to my faith and prayer and meditation.

  2. I was amazed at the cane sugar I saw, I knew to stay away from the High Fructose Sugars but not this one…I too am trying it your way…when I crave sugar, I eat fruit…a great natural substitute. I hope I can do the 21 day fast; so far I’ve made 3 but still going strong.

    Hi Kayla,
I’ve done some research on this product and I’m not coming up with a clear breakdown on what consist of the ‘fruit syrup”. My advice, If it’s that vague, to pass on it. I hope this helps!

Can you tell me if “spreadable fruit” called Simply fruit is acceptable? It is made by Smuckers and says it is sweetened with fruit syrup from apple, pineapple ir pear juice concentrate.

Regarding peanut butter. So many have sugar, etc. in them, but there are nautral butters. I really prefer the naturals because to me they taste like real peanuts. I have gotten so that the “sweetened” butters no longer even taste like peanuts should to me. God bless all who are fasting. It is so encouraging to know that all over the world people are striving to draw closer to God in this united effort, while it seems that all around us the world is on a crash course toward the gates of Hell. God’s people—UNITED—can change things. God bless you all!

  8. Hi Andi,

I don’t use this product, so I am not totally sure about it. However, if you are using it as a sweetener, then it would not be allowed on the Daniel Fast since all sweeteners are out. Even though this is a natural product, that doesn’t make it okay for the Daniel Fast.

We need to keep in mind that this is still a fast. So to substitute foods so that we don’t “miss” the typical ingredient defeats the primary purpose of fasting.

Be blessed and thanks for your question.

Thank you so much for your wonderful website! It has proven to be an invaluable resource as I have prepared for and begun my 21 day fast. (I’m on day 3 and tired but exhilarated.) Thank you for sharing your giftedness in this area with so many!

  12. Hi Melody!

What a cheerful spirit you are! Thanks for your message.

You are right about having a hard time finding tomato sauce and other prepared foods that are sugar-free. The only tip I can offer is to keep looking, because they can be found. Just keep reading those labels, look for organic or natural labels and you will find some sugar-free products.

Also, see “lite” prepared foods as they generally are sugar-free.

    Be blessed on your fast!

    Hello!
This is day one of my first Daniel fast. I have fasted before, but it was with water/juice/broth and usually for only 24 hours.
Blogging is also a new experience, yahoo!
I am having trouble finding tomato sauce without sugar or cane juice as a listed ingredient, can anyone give me the name of a brand that is truly sugar free?
I am so excited about this fast, I know the Lord led me to this, and I believe a spiritual breakthrough is on the horizon.
    Thanks.

  14. Dear Pastor Rivers,

A 40-Day fast is only different from the 21-Day fast by the number of days. The foods are still the same. I am currently on a 7-week Daniel Fast. So I am eating according to the Daniel Fast Food lists, but I am fasting until Pentecost Sunday because I need a major breakthrough in my life. As you know, the early church received the breathrough of the Holy Spirit on that day.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello,

Can you please be so kind as to let me know what kinds of foods can or should be eaten on the 40 fast and how is it different from the 21 day Daniel Fast?

This is day 1 for me. I live in London. Its all very difficult as almost everything seems loaded with pres. Love the idea that peanut butter is allowed – i like it! God bless and please include me in your prayers – there’s a mountain of issues in my small young family and we need a miracle. Ta. Sheila

Hi, I found an unsweetened soy milk at Winco in Bakersfield, CA . It is called Pearl Organic Soymilk and is made by Kikkkoman. Today is day 9 of my fast.
There are several people from the church I attend on the fast. As is the norm with a lot of church folks we go out to eat on Sundays. Since we are on the fast one of the ladies suggested a Pot Luck. So last Sunday we had our little potluck it was really good. We had lentil soup, red potatoes with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, and sea salt (baked), blackeyed peas, collard greens, cabbage salad, spaghetti,a veggie platter with humus for dip, green salad. Everything was really good. It’s kind of funny to me the other night I was actually craving garbanzo beans, (chick peas). God Bless You for your time and energy expended in keeping this site going.

Hello, I just wanted to quickly point out that almost all Soy Milk contains evaporated cane juice.
Thanks Susan for your guidance on this type of fast, it has been unbelievably helpful.

This is so confusing Im sure my church has really good intentions a but their vegetarian soup has lipton onion soup mix which contains sugar and vegetable broth containing sugar and someone who does these fasts all the time recommends honey. Also here recently I made a chili with veggie meat and it contained cane juice I was wondering about that and I kind of had a bad feeling about it but ate it anyway. Did I totally compromise my fast? From now on I will try the chili that you recommended. This is all so new. Ive never fasted like this before. I am now just trying to renew my relationship with Christ so sometimes it can be overwhelming to know exactly what’s rt and what’s wrong. Please help!

I am so glad I read this today. I just went to the grocery store today and picked up something I thought would be a great snack. I did see that it contained “organic evaporated cane juice”, I did not eat any of it, thank God. I will save it for after my fast is complete. Thank you so much for your work here.

I so appreciate your comments on these types of questions. Thank you for having a heart for this. Your loving and encouragement is not condeming or judgemental at all. You are showing the tenderness of our Father and that is who HE really is. I have been on this fast now for 3 days and know that God has called me to it. The detox symptoms have been minimal, a couple of headaches but overall a good experience.

Your veggie chili is good and even my unsaved husband (who I am believing God for) liked it with his hamburger and cheese! I added a little cummin and mexican oregano, plus one jalenpeno for a kick. Really good.

  22. Hi Ruth,

All sugar and sweeteners are not allowed on the Daniel Fast. That includes honey, syrup, raw sugar, etc.

Some people use Stevia . . . that has to be the decision of the faster. For me, I am a Daniel Fast purist and really stick to just fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and pure oils. I also drink only water.

The reason I am this way is because I feel “out of line” with what the Lord has has directed me to do about fasting. So I think it’s really important that people seek God on what they should and should not include when it comes to the “gray areas.”

I hope the very best for you on the Fast.

How about pure maple syrup, stevia, honey and guave necter? They are all natural occuring plant derived sweet substitutes for sugar.

  24. Hi Lynne,

Yes, I agree that “dried cane juice” can be part of a healthy diet, but it is still sugar. The Daniel Fast restricts sugar of all kinds.

With that said, there is a lot of room for interpretation in the Daniel Fast as there are only a few details of the way in which Daniel fasted (see Chapters 1 and 10 in the Book of Daniel). The description “I ate no delicate food” is where the “no sugar” comes from. So the Daniel Fast “purists” eliminate all sweeteners of any kind during the 21 day fast.

It’s really up to the individual and the direction they receive from the Lord.
