Food List

“In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” Daniel 10:2, 3

One of the great things about the Daniel Fast is that you are not limited to any specific amount of food, but rather to the kinds of food you can eat. The Daniel Fast is limited to vegetables (includes fruits) and water.

If you want a print out of this list in brochure form to use yourself or share with others, please visit www.Daniel-Fast.com

The Daniel Fast – available at all local and online bookstores.

Special Note: if you have health issues, please be sure to contact your health professional for advice before committing to any fast including the Daniel Fast. If you would like a list of the foods included and excluded in the Daniel Fast to show your doctor, just copy the contents of this page. Also, if you are interested in a collection of recipes that will take you through an entire 21-day Daniel fast, click here.

After answering hundreds of questions about the Daniel Fast, I am updating the food guidelines. My hope is that it will serve as a more complete list. The original list used by many people was issued in a book about fasting. I know the author tried to do the best he could, but that isn’t the same as getting hundreds of questions seeking clarification. So here is the new list that I hope helps.

Please make sure to READ THE LABEL when purchasing packaged, canned or bottled foods. They should be sugar-free and chemical-free. Keep this in mind as you review this list of acceptable foods.

  4. Yes, that’s right. Don’t be legalistic, but also don’t miss out on the huge benefits of denying the flesh. Don’t focus on the food. Keep the meals simple.

I encourage everyone who’s reading this post to watch this teaching. It will clear up a lot of the questions you have: https://youtu.be/tKpNrzHA2yI

    Be blessed on your fast.

  5. Ezekiel Bread has yeast. No leavening on the Daniel Fast.

I don’t want to get into a debate about the fast. I didn’t invent it. I only teach about it.

Are you willing to submit yourself to the guidelines? That’s the question. And that’s one of the most powerful lessons one can learn on the fast. To deny the flesh and learn how to submit. That’s when we move into maturity and away from being carnal. Paul said, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal.”

    Be blessed.

  10. That sounds like withdrawal symptoms from caffeine. Next time, be sure to wean yourself off caffeine before you begin the fast. For me, I call those “notes to self” for next time around!

    Be blessed on your fast.

There is nothing wrong with frying potatoes in a healthy oil, ezekiel bread ( and no, there is no honey in it and even if there was, big deal https://www.foodforlife.com/product/breads/ezekiel-49-sprouted-whole-grain-bread), or herbal tea (it is grown and natural) as far as I’m concerned. It’s not about following to the letter that others have decided/interpreted for you, it’s about your focus and your heart. For example, many make allowances for some 100% juice, is this a big deal? No. It’s a big deal if you’re using juice as replacement for your daily soda and thus treating yourself and or your addiction to sweets, which really has little difference as far as sugar intake is concerned anyway.

I don’t understand why you’re telling people yes or no to x or y, if you like you said, it’s about your heart. You compromise with smoothies, this can be really be no different than 100% juice…you can make a pretty dang sweet smoothie with no added sugar needed (who does that?), every fruit you add, adds significant sugar, not too mention, they didn’t have blenders back then. (I have no issue with smoothies, just pointing this out if you really wanted to adhere to the ‘letter’).

Biblically speaking the hebrew word is vegetables of all kinds – roots, beans, leaves etc, fruits, nuts (although i’d avoid sweetened nuts), and herbs/seeds for the diet and of course combinations in baked items that contain those that are free of additives and processed junk (ezekial bread either homemade or bought is probably one of the few i can think of off the top of my head).

Stick to the guidelines as is reasonable and dedicate to the Lord and He will bless regardless or how exacting you are.

Thank you so much for all of the great advice and help! Just wanted to leave a comment to people that are doing this fast to draw close to Jesus, don’t be legalistic about it! Use the fast to grow close to Jesus and don’t hate the situation because of it!

  26. Hi Debbie,

Yes it can be kind of confusing. I didn’t invent the fast, I just each about it. The guidelines have always had no deep fried foods, I believe because they were considered more decadent.

Here is what’s most important: Don’t let the food become the focus of the fast. Keep your meals simple and your time with the Lord rich.

  29. I am always confused. If I take a potato slice it up and sprinkle olive oil on it and bake it, what would be the difference in baked vs deep fried. They are both being cooked in oil. I am not talking how many calories or such. I am talking about the way food is prepared.
