  1. Hi Gwen,

Yes, corn is fine to use on the Daniel Fast. I like using it with black beans and red peppers in salads. Also, in soups and rice dishes.

Corn tortillas are fine if they are made only with pure corn meal, salt and water. They are not okay if they have chemicals added or sugar. So you need to read the ingredients on the label if you are buying them in the store.

Be blessed and thanks for your question!

Can you tell me what kind of dressing I could use to eat a salad. I am preparing to do my first 21 day fast with our church and I am putting together a grocery list of what I can have and not have. Also can I have home made oatmeal with raisins.

Just a couple of questions to get ready for this spiritual experience.

Thank you for being available and God Bless You!

  4. Hi Jss,

No there is yeast in this flatbread. There is a recipe for several kinds of flat breads in The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version II. The reason I included them is for this very example. A product seems great except for one or two ingredients. So many times we have to make our meals (and flatbreads) from scratch.

Thank for taking the time to list all the ingredients. It serves as a great example for all those on the Daniel Fast.

I found a flatbread that has the following: is it OK:

INGREDIENTS: UNBLEACHED ENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR [FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID], WHEAT GLUTEN, MINCED GARLIC, SALT, OAT FIBER, DEXTROSE, YEAST, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL*, ASCORBIC ACID, VINEGAR, NATURAL GARLIC FLAVOR, SOY LECITHIN.
*ADDS A TRIVIAL AMOUNT OF FAT.
    CONTAINS WHEAT AND SOY

I am delighted to find this community of believers. Our church started our 21 days of fasting today. Our whole church is not doing the Daniel Fast. I felt compelled to do this fast as I have some health issues that I am believing God to heal during this time. I have cleared this with my Man of God. I believe that this time will be great as God does a work in my body.

Originally, I had only looked at the list of foods that are included and excluded as listed on the Pastor Franklin’s weebsite. It does differ slightly from the list on this website.
I was listening to his broadcast this morning and as he was encouraging his membership concerning the fast, he made a point to state no pasta, meat and several other items, but you could have 100% fruit and vegetable juice.

This has been a source of confusion to me as this is my first time doing this fast.

  9. Hi Paula,

Eating in restaurants is kind of hard during the Daniel Fast. Most people stick with salads and sometimes even bring their own salad dressings. Restaurants are accustomed to this as so many people with health or diet issues bring their own dressing.

You might want to get in the habit of bringing meals to work with you. There are many great recipes available in the Daniel Fast Cookbooks that lend themselves to packing. Also, this would be a wonderful time to “set aside” for prayer and study of the Word . . . if that can happen at your work place.

I also encourage you to purchase high-sugar fruits, dried fruits, nuts and other foods that will help with your hypoglycemia. But don’t be surprised if you are healed of this ailment during the Daniel Fast. I hear from many men and women who receive their healing during their Daniel Fast.

Finally, your underweight friend can do very well on the Daniel Fast if he eats whole wheat pasta, high-sugar fruits and other whole grains. He can also eat peanut butter and nuts. Those are all high-calorie foods.

Cigarettes? Do you mean are they allowed on the Daniel Fast? NO! Wow! What a great time to receive the healing of this powerful addiction!

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you have other questions.

  10. Hi Paula,

Thanks for your patience. So many people are joining the Daniel Fast Community that I have been flooded with emails. I am so thankful to see so many more people are seeking more of God in their lives.

Hot water with lemon is fine, especially to cleanse the mouth and freshen breath. Also, it’s a nice way to drink water so warm us up at this time of the year (as I write this it’s 0 degrees at my house).

The fruit juice thing is confusing, so I totally understand. Let me try to explain it: In Daniel 1 we read that the prophet and his companions ate only vegetables (and fruits) and drank only water. This is one of the foundational scriptures for the Daniel Fast. So our only beverage is water. That means no herbal teas, no soy milk and no juice. So think “beverage” and imagine water when on the Daniel Fast.

With that said, many people make “juiced meals” as a way to consume vegetables and fruits (or combinations). This would be the same with smoothies. The same applies to when we use soy milk and other alternative milks (i.e. rice or almond milk). It’s okay to use soy milk on cereal or add it to a “cream soup.” But it’s not okay to drink it as a beverage.

I know this seems like a fine line, and it is. But it will be more clear to you as you actually experience it. I think the easiest way to understand it is to remember that whenever you want a “beverage,” then choose water.

    I hope this helps.

  11. Hi Paula,

I am working really hard to catch up on all the emails. I have 52 more to answer. Yours are among them and I promise to get to them. Sorry about the wait. It’s just that so many new people are joining the fast and there are lots of questions.

Thanks in advance for your patience.

just wondering if or not.. my two questions above will be commented on?? Still waiting.

  13. Hi Andrea,

The amazing thing about the Daniel Fast is that you can either gain or lose weight! It all has to do with caloric intake. You can have a lot of carbs on the Daniel Fast and lots of high-sugar fruits. Also dried fruit and nuts have a lot of calories. With that said, if you have special health conditions, adjust the fast to meet your physical needs.

I always pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help me with questions like this. For example, I had a hard time finding soy milk that didn’t have cane juice added to it (cane juice is sugar in liquid form). So I thought I would just “make due,” but the Holy Spirit gave me a check in my spirit. So now I go the extra mile and search out unsweetened soy milk.

    I hope this helps!

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE I HAVE ONE MORE QUICK QUESTION IS ALL NATURAL HONEY OK TO EAT

    January 2, 2009
  16. Hi Allen,

Thanks for your post! I hope the very best for you on your Daniel Fast.

You can have salad dressings made with olive oil, vinegar and citrus juices. But nothing with dairy products. There are several recipes for Daniel Fast friendly salad dressing in The Daniel Fast Cookbook – Version II which you can learn about at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com

The premixed oatmeal with flavors are not good. The usually include chemicals (like non-dairy creamers) and sweeteners, neither of which are allowed on the Daniel Fast.

I hope you spend some time on this site. Also, you can join the Daniel Fast emailing list at http://www.Daniel-Fast.com and receive all kinds of information that will be helpful for you!

I hope this helps. Be blessed on your fast.

Onemore question, what about drinking hot water with a slice of lemon, is this allowed? And I am still a little confused about the exceptance of juiced fruit. I have a vita mix machine that I have been wanting to use for a while now and have a couple of weeks off work, so I thought I could have friut and veg in liquid form??

I am new to this, Just heard about the Daniel fast last sun., and want to do the 21 day fast in Jan. I will be working long hours at the end of jan., so for example if I am to eat out, I can have steamed veg., what about mashed potatoes.. since they are prepared with milk? I deal with hypoglycemia, so this will be a challenge, but necessary, I eat too much surger and caffine. Also, I have a friend who is honestly skin and bone who is determined to fast, I am concerned, and people at his church do not know the extent of him being underweight (his legs are the size of some guys arms) and he smokes too, what about cigarettes?

  22. Hi Julian,

Yes, plantains are fine as long as you fry the in just a small amount of oil. What IS NOT allowed on the Daniel Fast is deep fried foods. So you be the judge . . . it all depends on how you prepare them.

I hope the best for you on your fast!

  24. Dear Pastor Ken,

I can’t tell you how much your words meant to me . . . I have such a deep respect for pastors. Thank you for taking the time to write and for your thoughtful words of encouragement and support.

I am honored that the Lord has entrusted this Daniel Fast blog ministry into my hands. I take it very seriously because I know FOR SURE that He gave it to me and it wasn’t just something that my little ol’ head decided to do! It was all God and to Him I give all praise, glory and credit. He is my Lord. I love Him above all things and I want to serve Him in every way He leads me to serve.

God bless you and the men, women and children our Almighty God and Father has put into your care. You too have an awesome responsibility from the Lord . . . and if there is anyway I can offer my support or assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me. As I serve you, I serve Him.

    Be blessed!

  25. My church is preparing to start our annual 40 days of purpose Sept 22-Oct 31) that encompasses 21 days fo Daniel Fast(Oct 11-Oct 31).
I was overwhelmed and moved by your feedback to the posted comments. While reading the posted comments I felt the power of God moving. Fasting is powerful, whether it be 21 day Daniel fast, short fast or long fast. It is to “loose the fetters of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free.” ISA 58:6. Keep up this great ministry, I will add your link to my church’s website, and yes, I am going purchase your cook book and encourage others to do so as well. May the Lord increase you more and more.

  26. Hi Candy,

Children and fasting is a different situation. As long as the child can make a conscious decision about fasting, then it’s good. But the discipline is usually used only by young people in their teens or older. Fasting should never harm or be the cause of poor nutrition. A baby looks to you for proper nutrition and cannot benefit spiritually from the restricting of foods for a spiritual purpose.

On the other hand, older children can fast from sweets, sugary cereals, etc. and be taught the principles of fasting.

So my advice is for you and your husband (and any other members of your household who are old enough to fully benefit from a total Daniel Fast) follow the Daniel Fast guidelines. The other members of your household should be on limited fast, only if they are able to understand what is going on, and even then it should be modified to assure they are receiving the nutrients they need for their growing bodies.

I hope this helps. Be blessed as you enter this powerful spiritual experience.

We are preparing to start our 21 day fast tomorrow. We have 2 small children who are also going to participate. I know dairy is off limits, but the baby has to have his milk. What are your thoughts on this? Is allowing the baby to have milk okay or should we try him on soy or organic for the fast?

  28. Hi Natalie,

Yes, you can use vinegar on the Daniel Fast. However, make sure it has no sugar or chemicals added to it.

By the way, some people wonder why vinegar is okay since it’s sometimes “red wine vinegar.” Wine is a beverage whereas vinegar is a condiment. As long as you are not drinking the vinegar 🙂 it’s okay to use on the Daniel Fast. Plus, the alcohol is gone when it turns to the vinegar used for salads.

One thing you will need to watch is chemicals and preservatives. Much of the vinegar available in the typical grocery stores includes them.

    Be blessed on your fast.

I recently purchased the Daniel Fast cookbook and the 2008 daniel fast for the body, soul and spirit. This is our first 21 day fast at our church. My question is this: So many of the people in our church do not have access to the internet and have looked through your books and want a copy of it. We have about 25 people participating in the fast. Do you have a hard copy book available? If not, Is there a way to pay you for each book without downloading each time. I do no want to rob you in anyway.

    February 12, 2008
  33. Hi Dawn,

Actually, no leavened bread is allowed on the Daniel Fast. Tortilla chips are okay if they are NOT deep fried and if they are sugar-free and chemical-free.

I hope you purchased The Daniel Fast Cookbook, which is available for immediate download. It will provide you with all the recipes, meal plans, guidelines and tips you need for the fast.

Otherwise, keep reading the posts on this site. There is a lot of information here!

Blessings to you and your husband as you seek the Lord through prayer and fasting.
