Fried Foods on the Daniel Fast

I want to clarify some things about food preparation on the Daniel Fast. This post has to do with frying foods.

First of all, keep in mind the driving issues for the Daniel Fast, which is based on the Prophet Daniel and the records of his fasts in Daniel 1:12 and in Daniel 10:3. In Daniel 1 we learn that he asked to be fed only pulse (food grown from seed) and drink only water. In Daniel 10 we read that for three weeks Daniel ate no meat and no delicacies; and he drank no wine. It is from this example that the Daniel Fast of today was created.

The Daniel Fast is a healthy way of eating and doing without some foods. Deep fried foods are not healthy, however sauteing vegetables in a small amount of olive oil is not harmful. The same goes for using a small amount of vegetable oil in salad dressings or to lightly fry whole wheat tortillas.

On the other hand, potato chips or vegetable chips deep fried in oil would be coloring outside of the Daniel Fast lines, even though the ingredients are just the vegetables, the oil, and salt.

Let the Holy Spirit lead you as you make decisions about what is within the guidelines and want is not. You can hear Him saying, “No, put that bag of Natural Chips down!” Or He might say, “Yes, 100% whole wheat tortillas are healthy and within the guidelines. Go for it!”

This has been very helpfu, thank you for taking time to address this topic. Great Q&A. White rice and white potatoes – are they a Go or No Go during the Daniel Fast?

You can make whole wheat pancakes without eggs and without the baking powder. You can add ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg to your pancakes. Your just going to end up with a not so fluffy pancake.

  8. No, pancakes include leavening agents, which are not allowed on the Daniel Fast.

    Hi Israel,
If the ingredients are all Daniel Fast friendly…And they are Baked and not deep fried then they would be fine. I hope this helps!

Thank you, found what I was after in the Other Ingredients: Protein blend (pea protein isolate, rice protein isolate, artichoke protein powder), fructose, natural flavors, guar gum, stevia, glycine. You’ll want to pass on this one due to the sweeteners in it, fructose and stevia. Thanks for your help, Be Blessed on your fast!

    Hi Bart,
Water is the only drinking beverage allowed on the fast, so Kawa Root would not be allowed as a beverage such as an herbal tea (which some also use for similar health purposes). However, if Kawa Root is needed for medicinal reasons then continue to follow your Health Care Providers instructions. I hope this helps!

Because they are still deep fried they would not be allowed, so continue to look for chips that are Baked with Daniel Fast friendly ingredients.

Hi, I bought a bag of Natural Tortilla Chips and called them, they said they are lightly fried in sunflower oil quickly, so the oil is not absorbed much. Is this okay, or should I just make my own chips?

    Hi Dionne,
Yes, 100% whole wheat (or any whole grain) pancakes are allowed, however they will turn out more like a crepe without any eggs, sugar and baking powder/soda in them. As for syrups, there is no sweetener of any kind (natural or artificial) on the fast. You can however, take some mixed berries heat them up on the stove, add some cornstarch to thicken the juices, roll this up and pour on top in your crepe style pancake. I hope this helps!

I want to know if 100% whole wheat pancakes are permitted and are there any types of pure sugar free syrup that you can have?

  25. Hi Artese,

The alcohol in the vanilla is minimal and not used for the same purposes as to why Daniel didn’t drink wine.

Fruit preserves without sweeteners or chemicals would be allowed. Leavening is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. So the chapatti is fine since the only ingredients are water, whole wheat flour and oil.

Frozen fruits, vegetables and even hash browns are allowed – but be sure to check the ingredients to make sure they producers haven’t added anything not allowed on the fast.

    Be blessed!

    Greetings,
I’ve been on the fast for 9 days and I need some clarification on a few things.

    1) How is vanilla extract allowed when it contains alcohol?
    2) Are fruit preserves (no sugar or chemicals added) allowed? I made some chapati (Indian flat bread) using the recipe I found on this site, is that allowed? I read that you said that “All breads are restricted.”
3)Are frozen hash browns and other frozen fries/potatoes allowed?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

  30. Hi Tiffany,

The recipe looks great EXCEPT for the baking powder which is a leavening product. I don’t know if these would work very well without baking powder since it is what causes the little air bubbles to form so the waffles raise up a bit.

You might want to try a batch without the baking powder and see how they work. My guess is that they would be pretty heavy.

    Thanks for the question.

Can I use whole-wheat flour in recipes that don’t use yeast? Is oatmeal permissible??

    as in:

    Wonderful Waffles….

    1 ripe banana, mashed
    2 cup water
    1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
    1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
    2 tsp.
    baking powder
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp nutmeg
    vanilla extract to taste(optional)

Mix together the mashed banana and water. Add dry ingredients and mix, leaving lumps in the batter. Cook on a waffle iron, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The batter also works for pancakes, and is especially tasty when you add small berries(blueberries, raspberries, a blackberries, etc.) to the mix. To make pancakes, pour 1/2 cup of batter into a hot lightly oiled frying pan. When bubbles rise through the middle of the pancake, flip and cook until browned underneath.

  32. Hi Yvonne,

No, while Ezekiel Bread is very healthy, it is still bread and contains yeast and honey. All bread is restricted on the Daniel Fast. I suggest using rice cakes.

    Blessings to you!

Susan: This is an awesome site that I will be recommending to others!!! My question is can Ezekiel Bread be eaten on the Daniel Fast?

  34. I know all the decaf, organic honey and flat bread sound very healthy, and they are, but they are still not allowed in the Daniel Fast. Spices are all okay as long as they are pure and don’t have chemicals in them.

With all that said, remember that your fast is between you and the Lord. I would say the one food that might be in the “gray area” would be the flat bread. But most of us eliminate all raised bread of any kind.

Swiss Water decaf method is 100% Organic and can be combined with Organic coffee beans. Would this type of coffee be allowed? What about organic honey, flat breads made with whole wheat flour and spices (including iodized salt)?

    thanks, Steve.
