The Daniel Fast – will you see what the Lord wants to show you?

As I met with the Lord this morning, He showed me something that I want to share with you. It has to do with the condition of our hearts.

Psalm 44:21 tells us that God knows the secrets of our hearts. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Too often we come to the Lord and ask Him to use us for His purposes. We ask Him to make in us a clean heart. It’s like walking up to the Lord, but meanwhile behind us we are dragging lots of baggage. Some of the contents we know, but it’s very likely that most of the “stuff” is invisible to us.

So then the Lord says, “Yes, I want to use you! So let’s get you ready for service. How about getting rid of that stuff that’s dragging behind you and keeping you from running the race with top speed?”

This message often comes to us when we knowingly disobey Him or when our emotions are filled with fear, anxiety or unforgiveness. It might be when we collide with our own unhealthy attitudes or behaviors.

These are all times when we can humbly come to the Lord and allow Him so show us the secrets in our heart. He is our loving Father. He wants only good for us. And we can trust Him.

I hope this thought is helpful to you . . . our Father wants us well so we can be all He created us to be!

Be blessed as you continue to grow in the love and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ!

In Him and for Him,

Can I eat japchae noodles? It says it is made of sweet potato cornstarch.

    • I’m not sure of the ingredients. The cornstarch would be okay. But check out the other ingredients to make sure they are within the allowable foods.

      Be blessed!

I am so thankful for this fast. I am seeking with all my heart to get rid of the unbelief in my life that manifests as depression, insecurity, fear. I am longing to be excellent in my everyday work at home–both inside and outside. Even more important to me is that my heart be free from guile. Please pray for me.

This is my day seven on the Daniel Fast and it has been a challenge for me which is ironic because I am a vegetarian. The most difficult part for me is the coffee. I have had a headache every day and even now as I am writing this. I am fasting for a very specific break through from the Lord, and I know that the devil is working overtime to tempt me to break this fast. My sister completed the fast last month and she is praying for me which has really helped.

Increase your water intake. These symptoms (headaches, fatigue, cramps, joint pain to name a few) will pass in a few days (3-7) OR more. The more extreme the buildup of the toxins (from caffeine, additives and sweeteners, etc.) in your body, the more extreme your symptoms will be and length of time to complete your detox. Meanwhile, flushing your system with water will ease your discomfort and speed up the detox process. As a general guideline, your body needs half its body weight in ounces of water per day, ie: 160lbs = 80 oz. of water daily. Add to that amount if you are experiencing any extreme conditions such as exposure to warm weather, cold weather, physical exercise or Detox. So, drink lot’s of Water to ease your discomfort! Also, eat plenty of Protein Rich Foods: All Nuts and Peanut butter (any nut butters), Whole grains, Legumes and Leafy Dark Green Vegetables, to learn more go to: And yes, take medication if needed. Be blessed on your fast!

God knows where you are. The fast is a weapon against your enemy. I biind Satan and his stronghold on your will. Be loosed and free to obey what the Spirit shows you to do. Get in the word. Eph. 5:22 and following and !st Peter 3 are excellent scriptures to meditate regarding your marriage. As we yeild to God first, it is possible to become a true helpmeet, even to a man who is tormented witih doubt. I pray for the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and for you to take a small step today, trusting Jesus to carry your burden. I pray for joy to rise up in your heart and for praise to come out of your heart and mouth to God

I successfully completed the Daniel Fast almost 2 years ago. It was such a blessing in my life and I ended up following His lead and did the fast for 3 consectutive cycles. I never felt better. The clarity and wisdom was amazing and God provided such blessings during that time. Following His lead, my husband and I made several positive changes for our family. However, over the past several months, without warning, my husband has become very bitter, angry and uncertain. He is lost; though he tries to seek God and wise council; when the answers are not what he wants to hear, he pushes those away, myself included; and seeks elsewhere. I have been feeling the prompting for over 6 months to begin the fast again; unfortunately, I have not been obedient to Him and can’t seem to become disciplined enough to begin. Whenever, I seem to become encouraged and hopeful, my husband will say something negative, hurtful and discouraging. I end up falling into a endless spiral and fail at starting. My husband’s uncertainty about life and our family’s future is debilitating to me at times. I suppose I am looking for support and words of encouragement to help lead me onto the right path. I know that the Lord is faithful and that ALL things are possible through Him. Thank you and Be Blessed.

      Hi Paula,
A word I received from the Lord many years ago that I have drawn on for strength many times over the years was “Do not let other peoples poor behavior toward you keep you from going on in the calling I have for You”. (For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable Romans 11:29), so I pass this on to you. I encourage you to Repent for what is yours to repent over, Accept the forgiveness and cleansing the Lord has paid the price for you to receive, Forgive everyone that has treated you wrongfully and hurt you (including your husband), and continue on in the high calling of God for your life. When you seek God through fasting and prayer you are posturing yourself for breakthrough, to hear and receive from the throne of God All He has for you! God is going to do great things in you and through you, you just keep your eyes on Him and not the circumstances or the past (they are subject to change), and watch what He will do! Your husband is obviously struggling with a stronghold of some sort, this could be spiritual or physical (depression, chemical imbalance, resisting God in his life, etc). We are standing in agreement with you that All that the enemy has meant for evil, God will turn for good, to cause you to increase, prosper And to thrive in the place where He has called you occupy, subdue and dominate, In Jesus Strong Name! I encourage you to read out loud your covenant promises and let them be your declaration: Deut. 28:1-14, Ephesians 1:17-24, Rev. 12:11, Jer. 29:11 Be Blessed on your Journey!

  5. Oh and also can I use soy butter.

    January 12, 2013
    • Daniel Fast Team #

I don’t use soy butter, so I am not sure of the ingredients. That’s the key issue. Check the label for the ingredients. If it is free of sugar, chemicals and other substances not allowed on the Daniel Fast, then it should be fine.

Hello Ms. Susan!! My husband and I are beginning the Daniel Fast today along with our ministry partners across the country. My concern is this, I am nursing our 7 month old daughter and want to ensure that my milk supply is not compromised. I must take in a minimum 1500-1800 calories per day. I have contacted the Lactation Specialist and while she is not very familiar with the fast, I gave her all the info (what’s acceptable, not acceptable, duration of fast etc.). She thinks I should be okay but to make sure I am getting the proper intake of calories and the fatty acid necessary

I was about to prepare 100% whole grain pasta for us for dinner but it says it contains 2g of sugar so I guess I can’t use it. I’m not sure how I can do this and get what I need. I don’t mean this in a rude or bad way at all, but I am not willing to put my daughter on formula just to do the fast. I truly believe breast is best. Please help! Thank you.

    January 10, 2013
    • Hi!

I am so happy you are joining the fast. It’s a powerful experience.

I suggest you add appropriate portions of lean chicken or fish and also low-fat dairy. As a nursing mother, you are in the “special diet” category. Do the rest of the fast as it is (be sure to follow it as I teach it here as there is a lot of erroneous teaching and can actually be harmful to some).

Also, the sugar in the pasta is in the nutritional analysis and is not an added ingredient, so it’s fine for your fast.

      Be blessed!

Perhaps reconciliation? Praying for his salvation, and my closer walk

Don’t dispair EM althougth the divorce may of been finalized, if both parties humbly submit themselves to the Lord Jesus seperately and learn more about His love, mercy, forgiveness, healing and grace He has the power to restore. Check out the testimony of guest, Rhonda Davis( on Daystar’s series Joni tabletalk and prayerfully consinder participation in a divorcecare ministry of the church where the Lord leads you to join. Remember Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith none of us who are still here in this earthly body are perfect but yet being made perfect until His return. Be blessed. :)

Thank you so much for sharing that. I recently started my fast and on Day 1 God revealed to me some of “my baggage” that I was not aware of. I was glad that I was learning more about myself but disappointed that I wasn’t where I thought I was. Your words helped and reminded me to focus on God’s grace and mercy and to remember that he loves me…flaws and all. What an awesome God we serve!

I just finished up the 21 day fast and I enjoyed it! It was hard at first but, I remembered the reason why I was fasting and I could go on. I have decided to continue on and do 6 more weeks on the Daniel fast. I am learning to listen to God and I am growling and learning what God wants me to do! His grace has allowed me not to fall to temptation when I am surrounded by foods that I can not have on this fast. Thanks for the encouragement. This website is awesome and truly a God send!

Hello Susan. Oh, how I needed to read this post today! Just this morning I was feeling confusion, fear, anxiety, until finally I went to the Lord in tears and I told Him I wanted to obey Him in all things and to use me according to His will. I heard Him say back to me to fast and pray and to make myself ready. Thank you for all your posts on here and for your words or encouragement you give to everyone. God bless you!

Greeting To All in the Perfect Name of Jesus, Our Lord & Savior,
Last Ressurection Season our entire church was instructed to go on the Daniel Fast. This was the first time my husband and I had ever gone more than a day without meat. To say the least, it was both challenging and exhilerating! I believe we became healthier through all the meals I prepared. Last night I was awakened in my sleep because I had been in continuous prayer for my son to be completely delivered from substance abuse. The Lord made known to me that it was time to fast. So I immediately decided that I would go back on the Daniel Fast for the next 2 weeks in complete submission to God. i feel this will not only encourage my spirit to think clearer, but cleanse my body for greater service in the Kingdom. I am so grateful to Susan Gregory for her inspirational words that helped me through the first fast. Please continue to keep me and my family in your prayers as I will continue to pray for all of you.

I began ready the book this morning and I want to begin the fast on Monday! I’m excited to see what The Lord is going to show me as well as begin to eat what is “healthly”… I’m glad for the blog to help when going through a specific issue.

Many people I know have done this, the blessings and the desire to eat healthy and not put junk back into their bodies prior to the fast is amazing.

    That’s what I’m expecting…

      Hi Clare,
Yes, the Daniel Fast can be modified to be done for any length of time, traditionally it is done for the 21 days. The Daniel fast is totally plant based, so you are correct there’s no dairy allowed. Here is a general list of foods that you can have while on your fast: All fruits, All vegetables, All whole grains, All nuts and seeds, All legumes, All quality oils. Beverages: spring water, distilled water or other pure waters, and yes, tap water is good, if that is all you have available. MISC Items: tofu, soy products, vinegar, seasonings, salt, herbs and spices. For a complete list you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you. I hope this helps, Be Blessed in your Fast!

I started my fast yesterday. I was really hungry yesterday but seem not to be so jumpy today. I know that it is the coffee and I did have a slight headache this afternoon. But I want the Lord to more in my life so 21days without coffee is worth it. It was hard today at work with people eating burgers and sandwiches around me but I got through it. Beans and brown rice for dinner with a salad. You just have to be creative. I pray God gives the creativity for my meals. I so need to hear and get clarity. Thanks for the wonderful words of wisdom… They are helping today… Day 2

      Hi Angela,
Water is the only drinking beverage allowed on the Fast. However, 100% unsweetened juices can be used in recipes. If you don’t have one already you can order a copy of the Daniel Fast Guidelines by going to and enter your email address, they will be emailed back to you, this is a great resource to have on hand while on your fast. Be Blessed!

  20. I love your website, thanks. As a pastor of a United Pentecostal Church I teach holiness standards, often reminding our flock that our body when filled with Gods Spirit is his Temple. And we should maintain an appearance fitting for such, and as that appearance requires discipline from within our temple FIRST . Now that discipline is best realized when the Temple on the INSIDE.. Is in harmony with God who dwells in our Body. Therefore: I teach the Daniels Fast is an excellent standard of Holiness to bring harmony with God on the inside first, before choosing what to put on the outside of the Temple. Thanks again for your website.

    hi there
i was wondering can you drink green tea on the daniel fast.

    February 6, 2011
    • Hi Carol,

The Bible says on Daniel 1:12 – Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

So the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. Pulse is food grown from seed, so the Daniel Fast is all plant-based. I encourage you to study about the fast before you being so you can be successful. You will find lots of information on this blog and my site – – and you can get the book, which gives the most complete information including food lists, about prayer and fasting, a complete cookbook and a 21-day Daniel Fast devotional.

      Be blessed.

I just want to say that I believe GOD spoke the Daniel Fast in my spirit, but I did not catch it then. However, one day my brother turned a t.v channel and someone was talking about the Daniels Fast, so I knew in my spirit that GOD wanted me to do this. So, I went on to the Internet and this is how I found your sight. I am only on day 4, but I have to admit this is absolutely wonderful. My bible study and prayer time with GOD is what I really needed. GOD has even answered one of my prayers that I had on my list of what I wanted to accomplish, I am really excited because this is only the beginning. I must say though, you must prepare the foods because eating healthy takes time and a little more money, but the spiritual benefits are well worth what ever you spend. I am excited that I am spending more time with my heavenly father. He has been getting me up early to pray, one time at 5am, that was not too successful….but I am working on it because he desire more time for us to read, pray and for him to minister to me without distraction. So, I’m being challenged to make some changes, but it has really jump started my walk with GOD. Oh and the physical, mental benefits are good too. Thanks for all your help…GOD bless and keep up the good work.

I am on Day 18 and constantly fatigued. I am even finding it difficult to concentrate, which is a problem considering I am often leading large ministry meetings and need a lot of mental clarity and discernment. I am drinking lots of water, and incorporating proteins at every meal (using the cookbook, and middle eastern food recipes). My usual diet is high protein, low carb, lots of salad and fruit. Two of the girls doing the fast with me are also having the same problem and have modified the fast. My husband though is doing great, and even still working out hard.
    Any suggestions?

    January 27, 2011
    • Daniel Fast Team #

      Hi Jennifer,
Since you are getting enough water, I would then target increasing protein with additional nuts, peanut butter, Whole grains, legumes (beans) and leafy green vegetables, many people add in unsweetened soy protein powder in a ‘smoothie’ as a meal replacement (watch out for milk products (whey) and sweeteners and other additives). You’re almost at the end! I hope this helps and you can enjoy your remaining few days without the fatigue!
